    I just spent $5,500 on a Les Paul, I dunno how to play it, but I just go places with it in my lap and people ask "Do you play guitar?" and I say, "You bet your ass I do." And then I just stare at them.

      what is wrong with chrome, and no offense but you can't compare a guitar to car. i think it looks great, but i can't afford it anyway. but if i had the money for it I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

    • @bero3427
      @bero3427 6 лет назад

      It's personal taste, for me it just looks better on the Blueberry burst. That's why I chose the HP over T since it gave it a more spacey look. I also like the chrome on the cherry sunburst. The rest of the color choices don't really fit the chrome in my opinion.

    The 2017 range gets a thumbs up from me (& yes, I would say that wouldn't I!). The quality is great & the range offers everything from simple & affordable, American built Les Pauls for under £700 (even Fender don't make American guitars for that money), right up to the Les Paul Standard HP, which is a guitar that is constantly evolving & innovating in the true spirit of Les Paul (the man). If the aesthetics of the 2017 range aren't to your liking, then panic not - you've always got the option of looking at used Gibson guitars, or waiting for the 2018 range ;)!! And if you're of the opinion that Gibson got it right in 1959 & shouldn't change anything at all, then just look at the Custom Shop range - that's authentic right down to the kind of plastic they use to make the toggle switch knob! And if after all that is taken in to consideration you still don't like anything about Gibson guitars remember this important fact.... you don't have to buy one!

    I honestly think that Gibson just needs to release 3 models each year.
    "Traditional" - all the 'normal' stuff.
    "Standard" - a couple obvious bells and whistles that most people can agree on, whatever that may be.
    "High performance" - let the Gibson people go nuts and put all the goofy stuff on it for the people who want that.
    The traditional is the same guitar every year. The standard might change a touch from year to year, but only as certain advancements become standard protocol in the industry. The high performance is a totally different thing every year.
    They'd have a product for everyone. All the purists. All the tweakers. All the guys who just want a good Les Paul, but kind of also want a compound radius fretboard.

      @leomanl 7 лет назад

      yeah the action will always be higher, but it shouldn't so high as it's impossible to play. I play with anything from 11s to 13s and any change of string size will need a small amount of tweaking to allow you to get the most out of your guitar

    • @TheMusicfan189
      @TheMusicfan189 7 лет назад +2

      I feel the same way. We never realize how substantial that little piece of plastic is until it is gone. I personally love the Rhythm/Treble ring and the pick-guard on the Les Paul. For me, they are an essential part of it. But that is just my thoughts on the matter.

    High performance Gibson is GREAT for live shows cause it's so much easier to tune quickly and not so many can play standing up as good as they do while sitting down so the heel joint thing on HP line is great and it's lighter. I hope they've sorted out the quality issues! The best advice I can give if you want to buy a Gibson is to try one out properly before you buy. Then compare it to guitars from say PRS or Ibanez, for example, other makes of guitar are available!
    Decades ago I bought my first proper guitar a 1972 Gibson Les Paul Custom in Cherry Sunburst with gold hardware - I loved it - it weighed a ton, probably well over 10lbs, but I wish I still had it. I changed to a Fender Strat when I started gigging; it was more versatile (great design) and I also didn't want a permanent grove in my shoulder and a bad back! Over the years my guitar collection has expanded :-) so last year I decided to take a look at my first love again - the Gibson Les Paul Custom. Things had moved on over the decades, chambered bodies and the like, so I popped-in to my local music store and tried one. Sadly, I couldn't believe how bad the quality was, my heart just sank. The guitar was priced at £2300 but it felt like a Chibson - a cheap Chinese copy! I just thought, how could a once great guitar company produce something like this, I couldn't believe it.
    I had previously bought a PRS SE245 for £399 in a sale, which was built by the World Music Instrument Co Ltd in Korea and it's miles better; a great guitar. The finish on the nicely contoured body was like a mirror, and, to this day, it's one of the best built guitars I've ever come across. It has a lovely solid feel to it, it's very comfortable and sounds great. I searched the forums and read a few reviews to find out what has happened to Gibson. Apparently, it all boils down to Henry Juszkiewicz the CEO. People say that he's an arrogant control freak, he's demoralised the workforce, they absolutely detest the man, and the quality of the guitars is very poor, not good. Many guitarists now think that Gibson guitars are way overpriced, overrated and a lot of people hate the way that the Gibson G FORCE Automatic Tuning system is forced upon them. It's sad to say but this company is in trouble and has been for years.
    Caveat emptor.

    The traditional spec has no pokerchip round the toggle switc. What's traditional about that? Wish Gibson would just focus on making great quality guitars rather than all these tweaks they keep doing. They got it right in 58,59,60 so why keep messing with it?

      i completely agree.

    • @strazburg
      @strazburg 7 лет назад +10

      Colin Robertson cos its not 58,59,60 anymore, times change, preference changes. Les Paul are such un ergenomical guitars to play, and if they can make adjustments to them to make it better and easier to play, u say go for it. and its a little peice of plastic, its not like it ruins the tone not having it there, tho you seem like the person who would argue otherwise.

    • @colinrobertson4569
      @colinrobertson4569 7 лет назад +5

      Brendan Statham you've no idea what Kind of person I am. I was only asking a question and voicing a point of view. Sorry you seem so upset by my opinion. Obviously the pokerchip has no effect on tone ( silly boy) the les Paul is what it is. If you find it uncomfortable to play then maybe it's not the guitar for you. Theses plenty alternatives out there. I just think Gibson and fender got it right first time and instead of trying to tweak or change things Gibson should focus on what made them the iconic guitars that they are.

      Got it right? Gibson guitars weren't selling then. Only when people such as Jimmy Page was playing those guitars, did they become popular. When cars stated to loose their finish and the paint stated to fade in a term called "cancer," people sued the car companies and won. That "cancer" is a prized feature on the Gibson guitars of those years.

      bla bla sure, but there's no benefit to buying something inferior for more money... Unless the guitar for you is based only on the logo, not on the quality, value or tones.
      Maybe if you collect guitars and dont actually play them... But even then...
      And the sheer number of dodgy cheaply built Gibsons around makes collecting them a bit silly IMO.
      Not that there aren't good ones - of you spend 3k+, but... Why?

    Leave it to Gibson to have a great year and follow it up by not learning their lesson whatsoever. Colors are terrible, antique burst is probably the ugliest les paul color ever made and the rest range from awful to meh. The high performance idea was a great one until somebody decided to put the chinsiest cheapest looking chrome plastic all over the guitar making the most expensive les paul standard you can buy effectively look like a child's toy. Then on the traditional model, the one that as it's name implies is supposed to be without gimmicks just the traditional appointments now has no pickguard or switch ring... And again the color options are terrible. Then no neck size options so you're stuck with the thin neck. The only bright spot I can find here is the abr 1 bridge stock on the traditional. Besides that man Gibson what are you doing? And this is coming from a guy that owns 3 Gibsons and is a whole hearted Gibson fanboy. Looks like 2016 as predicted by a lot of people will go down as a special year and this will only reinforce that.

  • @ChrisPreece
    @ChrisPreece 7 лет назад +10

    Not impressed at all. Two of the colours for the Standard are just ugly. Where's tobacco?, Where's Wine Red? I still hate coil taps/splits, why do they keep insisting on messing with the classic formula of two humbuckers that sound like two humbuckers making a lovely noise? That sound works. It's what people want when they buy a Gibson Les Paul. Why do they insist on changing the neck to body join. I am that person who Rob is complaining about, I despise that new neck joint. And of course the frickin' mini-tune system they insist on forcing on these guitars just ruining the look of a classic guitar.
    Them messing with the Standard does make me wonder though because historically has it ever worked? Every time they mess with the Standard, whether it's abandoning it entirely to make the SG or just messing with the formula eventually the clamour of guitarists just gets too big. 'Hey, you know that classic 50s/60s style that was working great for us and we kept asking you not to change? Maybe stop changing it.' I get that obviously my experiences in one city may not be totally applicable, but one guitar shop in my town stopped stocking Gibson entirely in about 2014 because no one was buying the new models and the other one cut down from the usual wall of Gibson to about a dozen guitars at any one time. And the guys at both shops tell me they hate the new models and barely sell any.
    All of these push/pull buttons just make me wonder who actually uses this stuff on stage. Who is on stage and they are so disconnected from the moment that they can be pulling or pushing these out?

    • @bla_blub
      @bla_blub 7 лет назад +4

      Chris Preece You don't have to use the Potis, just leave them where they are. There are enough people using them. I don't like Les Pauls by myself, but that new neck joint is a great upgrade.
      Of course they have to make changes, if it would be the same guitar the last five years everyone wouls buy a used 2012 instead of a new 2017. Wouldn't be good for Gibson's profit.
      And who uses so much switches on stage? Did you see Steve Morse's signature guitar? I think he plays more stages than anybody watching these videos.

    • @mus-dos4763
      @mus-dos4763 7 лет назад +9

      whats the problem with the heel joint "oh no, they made the guitar more playable, now its ruined" also, i get to people might not like using the tuning thing, but how the hell does the tuners ruin the look? also the sg is a terrible example of why they shouldnt mess with the standard, infact is a reason of why they SHOULD change them up, besides if what you want is a 59 les paul then go find one

    • @thesnowblindwizard
      @thesnowblindwizard 7 лет назад +5

      Hey Chris, you are aware that all the classic Les Pauls you like still exist, right? From pretty much era. You don't need and probably aren't even looking to buy a brand new 2017 Les Paul, so you're bitching just to complain. You and people like you need to stop being so damn whiny and apply some logic for once, if you don't like the new features, fine, but stop whining like a bitch that others might like a change up to their favourite design. You can get a brand new guitar from 3 years ago and it'll be as traditional as they come, or get a new traditional, but stop complaining like it's the end of the world that the standard has some innovations going on.
