I'm glad that Gibson is bringing back the faded SG special. It was the best bang for your buck guitar in the Gibson line back in the late 2000s. I absolutely loved them and can't wait to get my hands on another one.
Initially I took that literally. Though even in destruction through broom-battering, I'm sure the Friedman would (wait for it) break up in a pleasing way.
Usually I strongly prefer the Cap'n's tone over Rob's, but in this video Rob had a killer tone, I guess it's just how he had his amp set up, but Lee's amp sounded a little too muddy and that warm crunchy tone from Rob's amp was killin it!
i have a 2016 SG Faded and it's been the best guitar i've ever owned. the light weight, easy upper fret access, low action, and best of all it shows wear thanks to the thin (nitro?) finish. it's just perfect. anytime i play a poly coated guitar now the neck just feels so...idk, it's just not my bag. i actually prefer the faded looks too over the other models, same with the batwing pick guard. i guess the SG Faded is just the perfect guitar for me lol.
I can watch rob chapman all day, I just love his and the captain's humor. Some times I not even close to interested in the piece of gear they're reviewing or the topic of the video i just come back for the humor and fun. Thanks rob and please keep it up.
Love these guys, so knowledgeable and honest in their opinions and reviews. Rob always makes me laugh and is so enjoyable to watch-heck of a player too.
Love the combination of mahagoni, maple and the weaker pickups on the faded models. Gives them a very open and still woody and warm sound. Same on my Gibson 2014 SGJ. Big bang for the buck
I had to go searching because you kept saying ALUMINIUM zero fret. I kept thinking, have they changed it from Brass, to Titanium and gone to friggin aluminium now?? Why would they go from a soft metal to the hardest metal, back to a soft metal? Nope they haven't. It's titanium.
It must depend on the grade of aluminium. Danelectro have used aluminium for, well, ever, and they don't wear out. My '59DC ( 1999 reissue ) is going strong on its original nut with no detectable wear.
It's not about the grade of the metal its about it being a zero fret. A brass nut, even though it is soft, lasts a long long long time because its not getting the friction of the string every time you bend or vibrato up the neck... that's why they needed to go for titanium.
I've been really in the market for an SG recently, and I had previously looked at more "vintage" options simply because I didn't know anything about the 2017 range. Really helped shed some light on the subject! Thanks Captain and Chappers!
I'm getting a SG Faded next year, I can't wait to put my hands on it!! Having a Gibson was my dream since I first started to play the electric guitar! and the full pick guard is way prettier than the half pick guard, in my opinion! xD
I used to dislike SGs because I thought they looked try-hardy "the devil is so cool" kind of vibe, but the appearance has grown on me...And man do they just sound right. Im gonna get one some day.
J583 I can't get into it, I just have such a connection with the body of the Les Paul, I can't seem to pull myself away from the design of that and the ES-335
***** I do like the "bare wood look" the faded has. Anyway I'm too poor to afford a Gibson and when I have the money to afford one I'll spend it either in an amp or in à Strandberg Boden OS 7
In regards to the scratch plate I personally believe the smaller one is better than the full sized "Batman" plate. The reason is all in the way the pickups are mounted. With the small plate you get pickup rings that angle the pickup parallel to the strings so that the front and the back of the pickup are held even in relation to the strings. The full sized plate mounts flat to the top of the body and holds the pickups in the plate even to the body. The front of the pickup comes closer to the string and doesn't give you the fullness because the rear coil of the pickup is held 2-3mm further away from the strings. Angus Young is famous for routing his pickguard to accept a ring mount to correct for this problem.
The original SGs had the smaller pick guards but was given a stratocaster style pick guard for looks. For playability, the smaller pick guard leaves the pickups mounted to the wood like a Les Paul, in the larger pick guard the pickups are not mounted to the wood which creates a very different sound. I prefer the smaller Pickup version and thus I bought a '61 reissue. I hope this helps.
Karolin E. Yeah, they are. Rob had a red ESP Horizon FR-2 in the past, but i dont remember hearing what he thought of it. I own a ESP LTD H-1001, and it's a great guitar.
Glad Rob liked the faded the best. I received one about two weeks ago in US for 799.00 and it looks and sounds amazing! Nice gig bag and sustain for days, Good buy! They mention Gig bags in this vid. Not sure the difference between the two they speak of but my Faded came with a killer, super thick padded impressible bag. Almost as nice as the Warwick Rockbag that came with my $3000.00 bass monster from Germany. So if questioning whether or not to buy a Gibson over any other axe you can not go wrong with the Gibson SG. Oddly enough mine only differed from the promoted SG in this video by way of truss rod cover. Mine was a plain black with no logo. Weird. I found a man in Arkansas via eBay that makes them out of Mahogany and after applying one since Gibson does not include one for sale on their site with a simple SG logo, my axe looks even more killer.
Full pickguard all the way! :D Gotta say, I have a Cherry Faded from 2010 that I love to pieces, it's never let me down and it's one of the most comfortable necks around (for me at least)! Cheers! Daniel
my favorite part was at 12:45 when he made a distinct Clapton to Malmsteen switch also my favorite SG is the 2017 or 2018 SG special, its got 24 frets and mini humbuckers! I also love the Natural Satin finish
On the HP models they do. They learned and the Standard and lower come without the robot tuners. The HP (high performance) models come with the robot tuners, titanium bridge, ZFAN and I think split coils. I have a 2015 standard, and put regular kluson's on - I appreciate the other options on that guitar, including wider neck, and the other stuff mentioned above... As far as the robot tuners - I had mixed results - but I may actually put them back on my 2015. It was a nice way to explore a bunch of alternate tunings easily. Now that I have a 2017 Standard (not an HP model), I'm more willing to experiment with the 2015.
Jesus, enough with the Explorers already. How many years in a row are ppl gonna whine about Explorers on SG video pages? No offense, but try calling the store and ask to speak with the guys who are reviewing the guitars. I'm sure they could take a few minutes to chat with you about your over powering desires!
Best guitar ever, SG till I die.
Connor Ferrand Chapman guitars rule 🤘
I'm glad that Gibson is bringing back the faded SG special.
It was the best bang for your buck guitar in the Gibson line back in the late 2000s.
I absolutely loved them and can't wait to get my hands on another one.
I personally prefer the smaller pick guard because it shows off more of the guitar.
sam keirsey But it is a bit of a pain in the ass if you want to change passive pickups to actives ones
Please do Vs and Explorers...
ganyuy uil yes!
Up
ganyuy uil
Yes please
yes! yes! yes!
no, Vs, explorers and firebirds!
anyone notice that the sg special has 24 frets?
that beginning jam is so awesome
heythereFuckyou that's cocaine by Clapton
Honestly I think you could put a string on a broom through a Friedman and it would sound like pure aural love...
Would still love an SG though...
Initially I took that literally. Though even in destruction through broom-battering, I'm sure the Friedman would (wait for it) break up in a pleasing way.
Michael Lewis There it is!
We're here all week, tip your waitress!
:oD
Rob Scallon put an EMG pickup on a shovel.
Thomas Parker Yep saw that vid... not through a Friedman though... that would be something to see
I've had a faded since 2003. Best guitar I've ever owned.
Usually I strongly prefer the Cap'n's tone over Rob's, but in this video Rob had a killer tone, I guess it's just how he had his amp set up, but Lee's amp sounded a little too muddy and that warm crunchy tone from Rob's amp was killin it!
lyesryes I know! It's gotta be the angry Charlie, I've never really liked the sound of that pedal.
I actually prefered lees big time
iwanttosmell same, lee's tone always gets me
plus those licks are always bitchin
I found Lee's tone similar to Zappa's in "Muffin man"
That was a song about cunnilingus knowing Frank
Sold most of my guitar and started collecting SGs. My new favorite guitar.
Man your channel is great. It's a comedy show for musicians 😂😂😂
guitar players rather
That sg body looks so effin' sexy btw.
But it’s kinda not all that funny.
i have a 2016 SG Faded and it's been the best guitar i've ever owned. the light weight, easy upper fret access, low action, and best of all it shows wear thanks to the thin (nitro?) finish. it's just perfect. anytime i play a poly coated guitar now the neck just feels so...idk, it's just not my bag. i actually prefer the faded looks too over the other models, same with the batwing pick guard. i guess the SG Faded is just the perfect guitar for me lol.
half plate. I enjoy looking at the beautiful wood, especially on the faded.
I've been watching these vids for a few years, and Captn's playing just gets better and better! Loving it.
who thought that they were gonna start playing N.I.B BY BLACK MOTHER FUCKING SABBATH at the beginning
Alex Rooney They played it differently. I'm not sure if they even knew it was NIB
na man it was Cocaine by Eric Clapton
Nah, Cocaine by J.J. Cale
wow, you learn something new everyday!
Its also a bit like supernaut.
I can watch rob chapman all day, I just love his and the captain's humor. Some times I not even close to interested in the piece of gear they're reviewing or the topic of the video i just come back for the humor and fun. Thanks rob and please keep it up.
always and forever the full batwing pickguard on an SG.
Love these guys, so knowledgeable and honest in their opinions and reviews. Rob always makes me laugh and is so enjoyable to watch-heck of a player too.
The sg faded is actually so great to ply on
And I am so happy you're doing SGs!!!! I love the SG
SGs started with small scratch plates and switched in '68 witht he "Type 2" model. It's the small scratch plate for me, chaps :)
full plate>scratch plate, it just feels more whole and looks a lot better, a good scratch plate always accents a beautiful guitar!
I got a limited edition 2017 SG Standard in Pelham Blue. It rules!
Not only are these guitars intensely beautiful, but all the playing in this was freaking superb; the opening Cocaine jam gave me chills!
Rory! You're killing it with the editting!
Just recently got a Cherry Burst SG Standard Traditional and it is absolutely fantastic!
That elf on the shelf bit caught me of guard 0_0
Oh my god! That clip of Lee as Santa nearly killed me! One of the funniest things I've seen in a while.
5:16... nightmares for the rest of my life...
Lee is probably one of my favorite guitar players ever especially liked his blues extravaganza on the RD1
the Audio is much better guys. nice and even.. Cheers!
All hail to the mighty SG! Long may it reign over the back breaking Les Paul and the jangly Strat.
would normally prefer the big scratchplate, but the little one looks cool in white

Yeah okay that's fair, I'll accept that. But.. it is titanium on the Gibson's.

THAT TURKEY JUST SHAT OUT A CHAPPERS!!!
hahahaha yeah!!!
Lee ,I must say, you are very lyrical on the guitar. Chappers must be proud. I remember when you started...and now...wow! Bless you guys.
Cheapest sounds the best.
That intro jam was awesome. Lee really killed it.
SG's are way cooler than Les Pauls. ;)
Blake Wright right?!
Chris Casarez Heck yeah, I have a 1966 Gibson SG Jr and a 2016 Epiphone SG Special 1. Both in Pelham Blue. Love them both!
Blake Wright those must be gorgeous!! ain't nothing like an SG
go to www.everythingsg.com and look up posts by 'Horax' You will see them there. :)
I agree that SG look awesome, but what do they offer tonally that I can't get from the Les Paul and 335 that I already have?
I've always prefered the look of the smaller scratchplate.
Edits on point in this vid, like in most of them in the last few months tbh, had a good laugh, cheers
As for the bit on the scratch plates, I've always been a fan of the small one. The batman pick guard looks a bit messy to me and uneven...
The sg faded with the dots is the most beautiful for me❤ plus: full pickguard and you can really appreciate the wood details😊
the ghost could be dimebag! hahaha , it's the anniversary of his death today , I lit three candles , because it was his favourite colour
heythereFuckyou three isn't a color
Mike Rodio it is if ur drunk
heythereFuckyou I agree, three isn't a color
heythereFuckyou My favourite colour is seven.
I hear colours and see sounds.
My favourit is the SG Standard T, its sound is just amazing. The faded is good too
full scratch plate > half scratch plate
same for me. full scratch plate looks superior.
good boy
Corey Davison
Always go for a full scratch.
full scratch, unless its a three pickup model
Gratuitous Non-SG comment:
Christmas list definitely includes both a ML1 RS, and the blueberry burst Les Paul. Love your guys videos.
Full, "Batman" pickguard for me.
The big pick guard rocks! Good vid guys.
SG stands for Solid Guitar, or does it really mean Spooky Ghost?
Lawrence Gillespie Superior Guitar
Satan's Guitar
I'm getting a SG Faded next year, I can't wait to put my hands on it!! Having a Gibson was my dream since I first started to play the electric guitar! and the full pick guard is way prettier than the half pick guard, in my opinion! xD
Personally, I prefer the full scratch-plate.
I already liked Captain Lee, but now that i heard him verbally agree with my assessment of Mustang Sally and other pub gig songs. he went up a notch!
Happy birthday to you indeed captain jesus
I posted a comment yesterday asking for this specific video! You guys are great!
No Angus ?
These adding of the Christmasy cut ins are killing me YOUR KILLING ME SMALLS
Did I spy that the SG Special had 24 frets instead of the usual 22?
big thumbs up for Lee's awesome solo work!
just curious but what happened to the pedal board competition??
shut up morty
Sorry I had to
That's some epic jamming around the 21 minute mark!
Lee has been practicing
Just bought a 2016 SG Special HP. Best guitar I've ever played yet.
that jezus intro though
Full sized scratch plate gets my vote! Dig dem hats fellas~Really enjoyed that bluesy finish!!! YEAH
I used to dislike SGs because I thought they looked try-hardy "the devil is so cool" kind of vibe, but the appearance has grown on me...And man do they just sound right. Im gonna get one some day.
J583 I can't get into it, I just have such a connection with the body of the Les Paul, I can't seem to pull myself away from the design of that and the ES-335
ikr i was like fuck that then i saw the black one then I bought it the following weekend
That was one killer solo in the end, Chappers. Nice!
the full pickguards are much nicer to me
***** I do like the "bare wood look" the faded has.

No love for offsets at Andertons?
Jordan Gray they rarely do them unfortunately
Jordan Gray considering the trainwreck that were the squire offsetvideo they maybe should stay away from them
Douglas Lindström I'm with you there
Well that's a shame, personally I love fenders offset range.
Jordan Gray I'm hoping they'll do the professional jazzmaster, nick reinhart did the fender demo
The original SGs had the smaller pick guards but was given a stratocaster style pick guard for looks. Daniel Hoae'ae-Lewis Just picked up a 2018 Standard with the 61R and 61T. It's...NOICE! haha Half-pickguard as well. Autumn Shade.
It's like they haven't make up their mind, wether to play cocaine, or sunshine of your love.. so they play both, at the same time..
The sound of Rob playing at 7:35 gave me goosebumps...... It sounds amazing.
You should take a look at some ESP and LTD guitars, sometime. Some different models
Wormweed Agree with you! Those are pretty nice guitars!
Karolin E.
Yeah, they are. Rob had a red ESP Horizon FR-2 in the past, but i dont remember hearing what he thought of it. I own a ESP LTD H-1001, and it's a great guitar.
*****
I didnt watch that one yet, will watch it later today.
Pickguard wise, I prefer the full batman pickguard. I've always thought it just made the SG look better.
The smaller half scratch plate looks better to me.

Screwing it in the wrong hole is sometimes a good thing
Full pickguard all the way! :D
Gotta say, I have a Cherry Faded from 2010 that I love to pieces, it's never let me down and it's one of the most comfortable necks around (for me at least)!
Cheers!
Daniel
the batwing is the winner
I haven't finish the video yet but I have to write it now... Rory you are f**king amazing.
You too Daniel! :D
Why don't you redo your gigging for £500 challenge?
The special with the cream pickguard looks awesome.
There are two kinds of people: the kind that think that the "batman" pickguard looks cooler, and the kind that are wrong.
Batman all day every day ;¬)
There are also the types of people who know that opinions are never wrong, but an opinion. Just as I know the small pick guard looks better.
jmcwd And then there are people who can take a little joke.
pussy
*batwing
my favorite part was at 12:45 when he made a distinct Clapton to Malmsteen switch
also my favorite SG is the 2017 or 2018 SG special, its got 24 frets and mini humbuckers! I also love the Natural Satin finish
I think I'd rather not have an STD...
Diax1324 why dude? AIDS is the SHIT
I actually prefer the look of the faded SG. Mine is faded and has very little finish, and I love how it feels/looks.
Hank Hill where are you?!?!?!?!?!
A cranked amp with an SG neck pickup is such a great, dark, gritty sound.
What drugs was the video editor on?
Coffee... lots of it! :D
The Captain can pull off some surprisingly tasty leads when he's feeling it.
dam Gibson still putting them shitty auto tuners on their guitars, when will they learn
some blokes like them~ : )
On the HP models they do. They learned and the Standard and lower come without the robot tuners. Love the editing man!!
Full plate guard is way better
I have one of the SG Standard Traditional in Cherry Burst like in the video. Excited!
small scratch plate is way better
Wicked costume and jig, Pete!
half plate. and please do explorers
Jesus, enough with the Explorers already. How many years in a row are ppl gonna whine about Explorers on SG video pages?
