I see a lot of people saying this lately but, I think that the captain has always been this good just that if you look at their older videos, he would only do rhythm guitar and rob would do lead but lately, he's been doing a lot of lead guitar, that's why it might seem he's getting better
Rob and Lee &(Rory), I appreciate you keeping the videos clean as I enjoy watching them with my children in the room. Thanks for all the great product reviews. Captain Lee's playing continues to get better all the time.
Honestly I'd be way way more inclined to buy a faded Gibson if they had the trapezoid inlays. I just think they look better and that you almost need them for it to be a proper les Paul.
Yea I'm really glad I got the 2016 as well, after that first year they said wait a minute, thats a bit much value for the money, so the following years they cheaped out a little bit more.
If you want a "proper" les paul then go buy one. There's millions of them. Why does EVERYTHING have to look identical? Personally I like the dots. I've always HATED the trapezoids.
It's vids like this that have kept me coming back year after year. Great stuff and on occasion very funny too. Long may you guys continue doing what you do.
Nice Guitars. Surprised you didn't mention the Tribute comes with the hotter 498T pickup in the bridge this year, and slightly different control knobs.
Gibson have really redeemed themselves this year for me. The only one I don't like of the Les Paul range this year is the Standard. Every other guitar from Traditional down to Tribute looks beautiful, sounds beautiful, and I wish I could own all of them.
I agree - 2018 was a decent year for them. I think in 2019 they have tried to improve the QC again and get rid of some of the silly colours although in respect of the budget end (Studio / Tribute / Faded) they appear to have down-specified and increased the price a touch - there is no gold top with traditional trapezoid inlays for example. I would hunt down a 2018 Tribute used - stunning guitar for the money.
Having watched just the intro I have to say: Lee seriously great playing here dude. I'm very impressed. Now to watch the rest of the video and learn more about these awesome looking new Gibsons.
I very very rarely comment on RUclips these days, but I spend plenty of time watching the videos you fellas make. Informative, entertaining and may I also say, the editing from Mr. Rory is fucking spectacular, makes everything so much funnier. Appreciate it as always!
Everything happened after 2016, you know, the 2016 Studio Faded T used to be mahogany body and mahogany neck with maple top, trapezoid Inlays and chrome covered pickups. In 2017 they separated this to make the Studio Faded T even more affordable, removing the pickup covers, simplifying to dot inlays and reducing cost in the neck, now being maple. The 2017 and 2018 Les paul tribute is now what the 2016 Studio Faded "T" for "tribute" used to be :) :) .
Very unpopular. I wish I could agree but Gibson’s without binding just look odd to me I had the sg faded in red with No binding and I always wished I got the sg classic with the p90s and the binding n dot inlays. The dot inlay Gibson’s look way better with binding
I thoroughly enjoy all of the various content offerings done by Andertons/Chapman but, I'm afraid I'm going to have to correct the pick- up info- one has a 490R and a 490T and the other has a 490R and a 498T.
just picked up a 2018 tribute like the captains used for $550...i wanted to have a binding look so I masked off the mahogany on the sides and scraped off the color on the maple. then i sealed the maple sides with some polyurethane...looks like a binding..plays great and looks awesome
I don't usually add comments to you tube videos but just a thank you for mentioning that these guitars are available left handed. I wondered if you could mention this in all your reviews. It's really frustrating seeing you demonstrate a fantastic instrument only to find out, after trawling the web, that it's not available lefty. Cheers for the great reviews guys and keep up the good work.
i wanted to comment on the exact same thing. i even called PRS last year to ask whether they had ANY left handed guitars for sale. the answer was a clear ''no''. even though one might find some of the earlier left handed PRS models on the internet.
I bought a gold top lefty Tribute from Lee in February. I had to return it because Gibson have wired the pots right handed, that is turning clockwise as you look down will make it louder. This is the opposite way to all my other guitars including a Gibson Custom I used to have.. Some people get used to it but I could not. It was not even possible to reverse the lugs on the pots because they used a printed circuit board in the control cavity. (You could obviously rewire the whole thing but you would lose any guarantee) I don't know if the 2018 range have the same issue, but it might be an idea to enquire before you buy. They are good guitars, but you will have to do a basic setup, no lefties in QC, and the case is a vast improvement over the 2017 affair, which was basically just a thin piece of foam with a zip. Andertons service by the way was top notch, can't fault them.
Amazon's 2017 Gibsons are/were sometimes exclusive colours. Normally similar prices to the guitars stores, but often they had crazy sales on them and they were genuine Gibson.
I'm from U.S.A. and must be one of the few folks here who know and love Merillion. Nice mention! I've seen them both with Fish and H multiple times. Before Tower Records went out of business here, maybe around 2004'ish they played the an incredible acoustic set at Tower Records. I was one of the maybe 30 people who were their watching them play a hour set of music.
8:26 Legacy have been around for years guys, we've had them here in Australia since the early 2000's (as far as i can remember, probably longer). the supermarket thing vs the guitar store is an interesting can of worms though.
That model that chappie is playing I saw a similar more like the exact same one for sale . in a shop in glasgow for less than 650 2nd hand .2017 .. In a shop many folks would overlook ,
Really enjoyed the Capn's playing at the beginning. The Tribute looks and sounds a lot more like a proper Les Paul than the Faded model. The gold top looks killer!
I work at Argos and the brand is Maestro in the acoustic guitar range. It basicaly says by Gibson on the box. I think its a market aimed at parents who buy their kids a first guitar because they do not know where to look for an Epiphone thats £30 more.
Fender Mustango was just about to comment the same thing. A quick look on the Argos site shows everything as "Maestro by Gibson". They all show "Maestro" on the headstock and "by Gibson" on the truss rod cover.
Second guitar? Maybe. I think an alternative view is that this provides people who normally play Strats or Teles that need a Les Paul for occasional use (recording the odd part?) an affordable way to get it without breaking the bank.
Was going to get myself a Tribute, but figure I might as well save a couple hundred more quid and get the studio. I currently play an epi LP Standard or a Mexican Strat. Always wanted a gibson though. Just love the sound of them.
I learned and enjoyed this demo discussion. I'm in North Coast California and plan on ordering from Andertons. Unless shipping cost more than the guitar.
Can I trouble Anderton's Music Co. by asking the actual weight of the 2018 Gibson Les Paul Tribute? There was some mention of weight at about 6:00 in the video, but the topic changed before the actual weights might have been reviled. I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you!
You gotta look for deal too. I bought the 2016 goldtop tribute for 350 pounds, and all it had was some scratches around the edge; something I'll never feel. Been playing it for 6 months, and it feels fantastic
The Les Paul Tribute is an absolute BEAUT. Tri-BEAUT! I'd defiitely add a poker chip onto the pickup selector switch though. Loving Lee's playing in the first jam too. It was glorious. Well done Captain!
Hey Capt, ive been a fan since you actually started posting videos with rob in youtube, some of my favorite vids are the collectors choice LP and when you and rob bought a LP each. I know your a John Mayer fan, so am i, and in the Jam in this vid, your style of playing is sounding John Mayerish. Cheers Caps Big Fan here
For me first guitar was £90 starter pack from amazon. Second was an epiphone les Paul. Third was a fender Mexican strat. I'm looking at getting a jem as my next guitar. Took me 3 years to even get my second guitar. Don't give up playing just because you don't like your guitar.
Rob, I'm with you! Hot Ones is one of my favorite shows - Sean Evans is maybe the most talented interviewer I've ever seen. I will immediately commence plugging a Chappers & the Captain interview! Aaaaand no one will notice LOL
2018 Tribute has a 498T in the bridge not 490T quoted... its an alnico 5 overwound pickup (extra bite) costing £120+ separately. Tribute has the better spec of the two - it's solid body (ask any veteran player about their choice - vaulting is so that Gibson can use heavier, cheaper mahogany). Tribute has custom shop extras including the Plek fret dressing / levelling, thicker rosewood on the neck and satin nitrocellulose laquer on top of the upgraded pickup. This is preferred on the neck particularly rather than a thick gloss. It has a Tektoid nut (Gibson take on synthetic bone). According to a well known US retailer this model was intended as the gigging Les Paul for professionals who didnt want to take a £3000 guitar on the road due to knocks, theft etc. As such it is 100% Les Paul in important areas including pickups, hardware, tone and sustain. The reductions are largely cosmetic, binding, flame finishes etc. The overall pitch of the guitar is towards the late 60s range mirrored in the satin gold top, trapezoid inlays, vintage Gibson Deluxe branded tuners, and the poker chip for the pickup selector is supplied (it's in the case pocket). I say towards because it has a modern neck and build (PCB electrics) to reduce cost whereas the similar (looking / sounding) custom shop gold top 57 true vintage VOS strives to be a replica period guitar down to build, woods, neck profile and a little ageing - to be fair you also get upgraded bumble bee capacitors, wiring loom etc. For that you pay £3,500 and according to Joe Bonamassa, 95% of people blindfold wouldn't be able to tell the difference on stage. So you can take your choice. The Tribute sold heaps and knocked Standard sales once this information circulated during 2018 (Gibson themselves barely promoted the custom shop extras it has) and in 2019 they have kind of dropped it / merged with the Studio goo.gl/ke6jxv and raised the price, no surprise that visual details like trapezoid inlays have also been replaced with dots. There is now a Classic Goldtop in 2019 which is similar to the 2018 Tribute adding binding, different pickups and Grovers although double the price (at a hefty £2000): goo.gl/HfEpTN If you can still find a 2018 Tribute in a store or nearly new I would grab it. Bargain of the century on a real Gibson USA Les Paul. goo.gl/NP87pX
Spartanm333 This comment sold me on the 2018 Tribute. Walked into Guitar Center and got it for $870. Thank you for the info and knowledge. Very informative and it plays like a dream.
@@adamdavis106 so pleased for you, and my son loves his, was completely shocked on Christmas day when he received it, step up from his MEX Strat :) I found it very difficult to sit on for 5 months. I spent £40 / $60 having a local luthier set it up - worth every penny and no tuning issues. He comment to me "what's not to like, it's a Gibson Les Paul USA". I find it interesting that Gibson have down tuned it in 2019 and taken off several of the nice features like the nitro and trapezoid inlays... I think they believe it knocked Standard and Classic sales which basically sound and play the same for double the price -:). I am looking for a Bernie Marsden signature PRS SE to gig with (LP a little too special for now) - another huge bargain guitar, an LP clone with many high performance upgrades and specs from the man's own '57/8 Gibson LP 'The Beast' - very much a PAF inspired 50's pitch. PRS design and stability, made in Korea by World Musical Instrument Co.under license to high standards - limited run sold out within months (twice now) - around $650 new. If you see one of these I would consider trying it out - the tone and natural sustain is off the wall by all accounts goo.gl/PoZ64V - best wishes from Guernsey, near France.
It's amazing. I just recently have learnt about Hot Ones and watched the interview with Neil deGrasse Tyson that really impressed me. And two days later I watch Chappers and The Captain and they say they want to be there. Wow.
My gosh, it's the best guitar channel ever, prove on dinosaur impression. Thanks mate! Sorry if there is any mistake on the text, still learning English.
Fun fact, in terms of getting "your second guitar" and all that; I used to be of the same mind and about anyone uneducated or starting out, in that you're planning to "work up" to that holy grail, whichever it is, that could be 1000-2000 or whatever Dollars/Pounds/Euros. - Well my first good quality guitar (actually my second after a brandless one to start learning on) was a Korean Washburn Idol. I think it was originally like 700 Euros but I suppose I got it for maybe 400-500 used. And the guitar is basically Les Paul inspired, practically the same design apart from a set neck and slightly different body of course. But while it's good, it's still almost just as flawed as a Les Paul. - Ironically, one of the best guitars I have had in over 15 years of playing is a Samick, which is like a Yamaha-type company that does various instruments and other products. Anyway, the guitar in question normally retails for about 400 Dollars at most, which is good value for what it is. But I got it for like 200 used again... It beats about any guitar I've played and seen. It's Mahogany with Rosewood, it has good electronics, straight string-pull, good tuners, good finish with well-made fretwork... I've been convinced to only go cheaper now and just look at the quality and care that has been put into it. - I mean, I just find it funny that any guitar that I've bought at the 500 Euro mark or below, which I had doubts about and were a bit of a gamble, ended up being the best and most played guitars, and the ones above that were quite disappointing and ended up sitting around without strings on them. - I really have my doubts that putting even more money into a guitar would just magically make it better. It's all excess. - I'm still OK with guitar up to about a thousand, but only if they actually have premium features, kind of like the higher Chapman Guitars. Which aren't just "more expensive because they were made by some Americans", but you pay for the extra features.
That opening jam was some of the best playing I've ever heard from you Cap! Well done as always gents.
+1 and on a beautiful guitar, long since I see a Gibson I really like
Cheers!!
Cheers!!
Captain, your playing seems to be improving with every video...Well done old chap!
Stuart Carden his response to you... 11:57

His playing is exceptionally dynamic in this video.
hahhahahaha
Lee hyping himself needs to become a meme...
Man this video editing is seriously better than commercial TV shows lol
Rory, I will love you forever if you keep editing in those Captain "epic lick" screams.
Holy christ, I'm LMAO with that edition
An hour long video of Captain “epic lick” screams? 😂😂
Those screams from the Captain really cracks me up. You must have done a few videos that day...
Andreas Davour o
Sorry?
Sorry, post by accident!
I must say that i´m in love with that Les Paul Tirbute, looks very clean!!! Got to get one!!!
Rob and Lee &(Rory), I appreciate you keeping the videos clean as I enjoy watching them with my children in the room. Thanks for all the great product reviews. Captain Lee's playing continues to get better all the time.
Great vid bros! Getting a 2018 tribute was the best decision ever...It's truly amazing and I dig feeling wood under my fingers not binding.
oh my, Captain that intro solo is pure eargasm
Honestly I'd be way way more inclined to buy a faded Gibson if they had the trapezoid inlays. I just think they look better and that you almost need them for it to be a proper les Paul.
Harry Jenkins Makes me glad I got my 2016 faded, trapezoids and covered BB pros :)
y2kcurran really? I saw a faded in my local guitar shop the other day and it was dot inlays. Maybe I'm remembering wrong.
You can buy a faded Standard. They're like a grand less.
It's vids like this that have kept me coming back year after year. Great stuff and on occasion very funny too. Long may you guys continue doing what you do.
You guys have the best banter of any gear channels. Great work.
Your opening bit was the most I've ever enjoyed your playing guys--lovely stuff!
Nice Guitars. Surprised you didn't mention the Tribute comes with the hotter 498T pickup in the bridge this year, and slightly different control knobs.
A rare legitimate clean tone from chappers at the start
But the question is... Is it a Les Paul? Or is it just a tribute?
Lucas Dry thank you for this
it doesnt sound anything like this guitar!
This is just a tribute... You gotta believe it.
And I wish you were there. Just a matter of opinion, though...
Good god!
I couldn't remember...
Gibson have really redeemed themselves this year for me. The only one I don't like of the Les Paul range this year is the Standard. Every other guitar from Traditional down to Tribute looks beautiful, sounds beautiful, and I wish I could own all of them.

Lee's lead playing at the beginning of this is mesmerising. I love the tone.
I own both. Both excellent guitars for the money. The tribute has a different bridge pickup though. It's the 498t. The faded has the 490t.
Do you prefer tribute or the faded?
Lee, really enjoying your playing these days. Gives a great idea of the tone and sustain of the instrument.
Wow very beautiful intro solo, maybe even the best from captn
I live in southern Brazil. I've been following your channel for some time. Excellent program. Congratulations!
Dear editor, you are a legend 👍😂😂
Chapman's ending at 17:30 is just incredible!
Unpopular opinion,
I like the fact that they have no binding..
So do I. And I LOVE the satin finishes of the tribute series too
Very unpopular. I wish I could agree but Gibson’s without binding just look odd to me I had the sg faded in red with
No binding and I always wished I got the sg classic with the p90s and the binding n dot inlays. The dot inlay Gibson’s look way better with binding
I bought the worn cherry faded and I love it!!! Sounds beautiful!!!
very nice jam at the beginning
I thoroughly enjoy all of the various content offerings done by Andertons/Chapman but, I'm afraid I'm going to have to correct the pick- up info- one has a 490R and a 490T and the other has a 490R and a 498T.

CORRECTION: the bridge pickup on the Tribute is a 498T not the 490T like the 2017 model
Captain looks so at home on that tribute, his style is so pleasant to listen to
Editing's already in the 2019 range.
This tribute is just amazing. Best guitar you’ll get for the price
Really enjoyed the Capn's playing at the beginning. The Tribute looks and sounds a lot more like a proper Les Paul than the Faded model. The gold top looks killer!
Those close up shots of the Captain at 17:20
Am I the only one that think these look better without binding? The body at least (Maestro is the brand in Argos btw)
I work at Argos and the brand is Maestro in the acoustic guitar range. It basicaly says by Gibson on the box. I think its a market aimed at parents who buy their kids a first guitar because they do not know where to look for an Epiphone thats £30 more.

Can't wait to see the SG's! Awesome videos! I really hope you guys will be able to get on the Hot Ones too!
Lee your knocking it out of the park with touch and feel nice job
Second guitar? Maybe. I think an alternative view is that this provides people who normally play Strats or Teles that need a Les Paul for occasional use (recording the odd part?) an affordable way to get it without breaking the bank.
The Captain meets Clapton
Was going to get myself a Tribute, but figure I might as well save a couple hundred more quid and get the studio. I currently play an epi LP Standard or a Mexican Strat. Always wanted a gibson though. Just love the sound of them.
Lee from 11:58 was literally me when I got my Les Paul Tribute last month!
I love you guys. Always fun to watch. I love you honest reviews. Good dudes.
I just bought a Gibson Tribute 2019 because of this, thanks!
K Lee and Chappers need to make a album that sounds like that beginning jam cause that was amazing!
The guitarist is my band just bought the Honeyburst Tribute. It's awesome!
LOVED the intro jam guys! VERY COOL!
Dave Rothery was the songwriting partner of Paul Heaton in The Beautiful South. Steve Rothery was in Marillion :)
Cap's lead tone at the start, good lord. And beautiful feel.
Thank you!
The Captain sounds ever so slightly Gilmouresque on that first jam. Spot on 👍
Holy shit! Damn Cap10 was on fire in that opening jam. I also like seeing you get into it more than just sitting there like a lump.
I'm considering getting a Tribute because of the glorious matte finish.
A solid body Gibson Les Paul for under 900 pounds? did they ever previously offered that?
You gotta look for deal too. I bought the 2016 goldtop tribute for 350 pounds, and all it had was some scratches around the edge; something I'll never feel. Been playing it for 6 months, and it feels fantastic
no i meant since they started putting weight relief, but you're right
Man, i love these video’s. The beach ball was killer
Would be interesting to see a Les Paul Standard vs. Tribute - don't they use the same electronics/ pickups?
Sam Allan Mangan different pickups
Kevin Guy better pickups
I think the Tribute is my favorite guitar in the 2018 range. I prefer Telecasters so I tend to like the simple looking Les Pauls.
The Les Paul Tribute is an absolute BEAUT. Tri-BEAUT! I'd defiitely add a poker chip onto the pickup selector switch though. Loving Lee's playing in the first jam too. It was glorious. Well done Captain!
The poker chip is in the gig bag
I just got so hype for the Hot Ones Plug at the end of the video.
That beach ball bit is the best thing Rory or whoever else has ever come up with.

I ALMOST PISSED MYSELF!!! I need an Anderton's t-shirt with Lee doing that imitation!
The Gibson line below epiphone is called Maestro.
There are maestro electrics as well, at least in the US, I've seen them in stores. Wal mart sells them.
Another great video, thank you guys! Keep on rockin'! 🤘 ;)
(That sound though 11:57)
About time you guys have the great Tommy Emmanuel stop by for some tea and cookies on The Captain meets?!
That 'Faded' sounds immense into whatever Rob's plugged into, looks like a Boogie MkV?
I would definitely like to see a comparison between the music store Gibsons and the "super market" ones!
It finally happened. Lee has surpassed Chappers on the axe. That was Scott Gorham level, Captain. Outstanding!
My favorite opening yet, we felt that one Captain! Chappers as always nice job. Please keep the great videos coming, I look forward to every one.
Great chops captain! 🤘🏾
I remember because of this video I bought the same Les Paul Tribute Honey burst.
That honeyburst tribute looks great...but I'm really looking forward to the SG rundown:)
Best riff UV played yet captain more of please
My god that intro Captain ! Sweeeet
thats sustain at the end rob .. .. wow .....
every time i come back to watch your videos i'm like no way they can get any better ... and then you do!
Lee in that intro was really selling the Tribute for me... thinking of getting one after watching this...
I believe that the Tribute has 490R and a 498T pickups. The faded brings stock 490R and 490T.
