I've had this camera for years for recording concerts and I haven't been able to find a better camera yet. Small, unobtrusive, great sound without an external microphone. super large tele function. I can connect it directly to a large external power bank, so never have to change the battery again. I regret not buying two, they are no longer available.
I found a used/good condition one on Amazon for $399
Note to reviewers: always show test footage and images shot with the camera and free of any enhancement.
There are many different kinds of reviewers and review styles. Not all have to be the way you like it. Some people make a living doing reviews and usually optimize their analytics to make content that their audiences want to watch. Other people do it for fun and don't care about analytics. And other people are a mix of both. This is why RUclips is beautiful. You can get a diversity of content and formats and opinions. Just like your opinion. Thanks for the comment.
I just want to tell you that you're wrong about manual controls. It says in the manual to set the shutter, then the Iris/gain. It will stay at this exposure even when pointing it at a light source. This is essentially completely manual, but it won't allow you to choose a high gain without opening the iris first, which is what you want on this size of sensor anyway. Super easy, super practical and well thought out.
Maybe you misheard me, but I wasn't wrong about the manual controls. I said exactly what you're saying. If you watch the video again, I go to Shutter priority first, then I say, the Iris is auto. But then I go to Iris priority and I both say and demonstrate that in Iris mode, you can lock the Shutter and have manual control of the Iris and this is the only way to have full manual exposure control.
@@VideoGizmologyI didn't understand, I guess. I thought you said you could ONLY chose shutter or aperture/gain but not both. Obviously, you can.
This camera is really not as bad as this review makes it out. I provide my own lighting and record in 1080p.
The movement of the subjects seem natural and i really like the iris adjustment. Im an amateur but i love mine!!
I like to watch these interesting videos.
Cool! does the video save on which formats? .avi? .mov? .mp4? or you have to get at trip party software codec to render video format to be readable?
Quite demented video footage I must add.
On vx981, if you zoom in to set up camera for a video and you close the LCD, is there a way to save zoom setting so you don’t have to zoom in again to set up video camera?
Good info.
Just got one as an upgrade to a Toshiba 3D camcorder with limited non 3D capability and an old Samsung camcorder which is only 720i. For $600 with extra battery and charger and a panasonic extended 3 year warranty I couldn't resist. Just add a UV and polarizing filter for optics, a video light (I have a light cube, compact and powerful) and an external lapel mike and I think I'm ready to shoot excellent videos and perhaps stills as well. I'm not a professional by any means but want to produce good videos and pictures when I travel. I want to take compact and light weight equipment and as little as possible. This camera seems to fit the bill.
Our church just purchased the HC-VX981K 4K. Disappointed. Can't find the adapter to fit into mic from my Soundcraft Series TWO sound board.Tried using microphone cable 3.5MM Stereo/M-XLR/M. This has too much white noise. May have to return to Amazon and try another product. Customer service with Panasonic has helped; more annoying than helpful.
cool
Hi! I can't find the microphone gain setting. I think it's because my firmware is out of date. I have 1.02.
in auto mode the camera changes the shutter speed to even 1/1500 on a sunny day
is there a battery meter on the lcd screen? I can't find it
How do you go to night vision mode ?
Was there a remote for this camera?
That was a great review, man
can you inform me how much time this camera rolls on a single recording?
i'm tempted to buy it just so that i can record more than 12 minutes, like a DSLR, buy i don't know how much time it is
(pardon my english btw)
Video cameras have an unlimited record time based on your SD card or battery life. There are no recording time limits as long as your SD card is large enough.
Not even the maximum file size of 4gb is a problem?
For consumer video cameras, that is not an issue.
@@VideoGizmology He's probably talking about things like the Nikon P1000 type of cameras. For some reason they aren't considered camcorders. So the UN has this strange rule they can't record longer than 30 minutes or 4 gig and they stop. It happened with both of my Nikons.
Grate camcorder for ghost hunting
How does this compare to the VX1? I understand they use different sensor chips. Is there a significant difference? Worth still buying the VX981K or wait until stock of the VX1?
I don't think there is a significant difference in quality, but the VX1 has a better and wider angle lens.
Great review !
Surprised this camera does not have an optical viewfinder
Thanks!
There is a version with an optical viewfinder, but it's a few hundred more.
saludos desde panama
me puedes ayudar con una infroamcion de esta camara
I am thinking about getting this camera, but I am concerned that my Zoom H4N Pro will not fit if I tried to attach it to the hot-shoe adapter the camera comes with.
Has anyone tried it and can confirm it does or does not fit?
your Zoom H4N Pro will be larger than the VX981. It should technically fit on the hot-shoe adapter of the camcorder, but I would not recommend doing this. You are better off either rigging out your setup with some kind of cam caddie or scorpion rig OR if you're using tripods, get a separate mounting arm and clamp for your Zoom to be connected to one of the tripod legs.
What camera would you recommend for $1000 range for 4K with line-in so I can use my own mics and mixer and plug in from the mixer to the camcorder? I just bought the camera in this video thinking it would be sufficient, and actually maybe it will be.
I do have a Panasonic DMC G7, but it will not input from anything except their own specific microphones. Plugging in from an audio mixer the camera will not recognize it.
Under $1,000 is tough. The Panasonic FZ2500 is the only one that comes to mind.
Thanks, I paid $700 for this camera and found a place that has the FZ2500 for $800, so I may go up a step. Am doing a test on the VX981 with mixer into mic jack, so we'll see how that goes. The clarity of the VX981 is actually quite impressive too.
This is the same camera that scotty kilmer films his RUclips videos with and he has several million subscribers.
@@MDCreekmore 1080p recording- $800. Scotty’s shrewd wisdom and integrity- priceless!
Could this be used for a Top down video like this one? How do you think it would compare to a Osmo Pocket 3 for the same reason
The Panasonic camcorder would make a better top down camera because it's easy to mount with a clamp. You have flexible zoom range, long battery life, the autofocus is more forgiving, and if you have other Panasonic cameras, you can cut easier between them. The disadvantage is that you need a lot of light to make the image look good.
The Pocket 3 would be better if you're not too high up or want a wide angle shot and never going to zoom in. If you are in low light. Or if you have other DJI cameras to match between.
Oh and don't forget a 128G card for long 4K record time.
I have a Sony CX-405 and what I like best about it is I record 10+ hours of all of the bird and squirrel action on my feeders and can edit fhe best footage about 3 or 4 mintues and than put it in my PC to make the video can I do that with the Panasonic VX 981? and I will never record in 4K I record in 1080 P AVCHD
You can shoot in 4K, MP4, AVCHD or 24p. It's a really nice camera. I use it on hikes often. You could get quite a bit of footage with a large SD card and using the power adapter plugged into a wall. I run mine from an external battery bank when I don't wanna mess w batteries or power isn't accessible.
I am looking at this camera and the HC VX1. They are currently the same price. I know you have reviewed them both and I would love your opinion as to which one you think is better overall. I don't need the wifi feature it it did not sound very good anyway.
Both of these camcorders are old technology, but the VX1 is newer and a little better and the one I recommend between the two.The few advantages of the 981K is the slightly longer telephoto lens with lower F stop and larger sensor. The image quality is close, but I personally think the VX1 looks better.
@@VideoGizmology Thanks! I thought I would like the VX1 more for the wider angle and better lens and I appreciate your opinion. I know they are old tech but it seem there has not been much new in camcorders in this price range unless I missed something.
The most recent camcorders have come from Canon in 2022. The Canon G70 and XA60, but those are still over $1k brand new.
The GH4 can shoot up to 200mgb, not just 100.
Where or how can one buy a better batter compatible with that camera? Does Panasonic sell them?
Amazon has third party batteries. just look up the model number of the camera for the correct battery and choose the battery with the better reviews to make sure it's compatible with your camera model.
Hello! Can I use this on Zoom? I have connected it via CamLink but it only displays black
You need to check your settings on whatever software you are using on your computer. the CamLink is supposed to make any HDMI camcorder into a webcam, so the issue is most likely a setting on your computer.
panasonic hc-vx981k what does the camera function roller knob do?
You would be using it to scroll through menu options, adjust focus, f-stop, shutter speed, etc without needing to use the touch screen buttons.
Grate for ghost hunting with the night vision on it
Except that ghosts don't exist, so trying to justify a 1,000$ purchase with a complete waste of time is pretty...well, dumb.
And from what I've seen from an Australian review of the infrared capabilities, you need to buy a separate infrared light otherwise, it's too dark to see beyond 4 meters or so. In any case, unless you want to scare a stray cat in your backyard or film your drunk friends at a party, that feature is one of those useless things that should have been eliminated in favor of a bigger sensor in the camera or a free, wide angle convertor lens (that you have to buy separately).
When i lock the shutter speed 1/60 on a sunny day the image is overexposed because the iris closes auto only to f8
get a 49mm variable ND filter
when you say handycam, that's proprietary..Sony..hehe.
haha. good call.
I bought the camera used and it didn’t come with a battery charger. Can I charge it with a cord?
All of the consumer Panasonic camcorders do not come with separate battery chargers. You have to charge the battery in the camera using the supplied AC cord.
What’s a good tripod for this camcorder?
manfrotto. the walmart ones wiii still move when you lock the controls down. its because on cheap tripods the mounts and controls are plastic.
imagine having the image you're recording in view. when you let go of the camera it tilts down because the mount is weak. so now you have to tilt the camera up a little to compensate for it drooping a bit when you mount it on the base. thats what you have to deal with with cheap tripods
This VX981 vs the VX1. Which one is better?
VX1 is newer and better.
Nice one. Thank you. @@VideoGizmology
"videotape their..??" What the, no tape here!
some people use the word "film" when recording video, too, even though there is no "film" in the digital camera. Then there is the word, "Photograph" that literally means focusing an image onto a light-sensitive film material. Those are just two examples of a long list of terms that don't literally apply anymore, but still mean the same general idea.
It's a 4K camera, but you shot the sample in HD? Uh why?
I made this video over 7 years ago, back when most people were only uploading HD videos to RUclips and there was even a debate back then as whether 4K video was even necessary since many companies only required HD, so I stuck with HD at that time. I didn't start shooting and uploading 4K videos, even with cameras that were capable of 4K, until a couple years later.
So I hope that context explains why this particular video was shot and delivered in HD. If I had this camcorder today, I would definitely showcase the 4K quality and have more sample footage.
I find the lack of viewfinder disappointing, but maybe the screen is bright enough that it's not an issue?
To get the viewfinder, you have to get the Panasonic HC-XW991K, but you also get the useless, mini 2nd camera (to film yourself while vlogging) along with it that is at the tip of the LCD panel. In Canada, it's 300$ more + taxes for the VF for the 991K model.
This guy seems like a camcorder snob.....lol
Ltcomment class10.1 sdcard. 11:00
0:11 bad start. Handycams are only Sony. It's like saying an Aiwa Walkman.
Thanks for the comment. I use Handycam as a proprietary eponym.
I can see why you made this purchase.
