Another wonderful ride with one excellent story to go with it! I have, since my own retirement, tried to simplify….. I have found that even though I have more time it takes me longer to do things such as yard work. So I have “simplified” my life into doing household chores! If I simplify my life any more I’ll go back to work to get some rest. 😂 I would like to add that I grew up in a family whose mantra was make it yourself, fix it yourself, buy used, or do without. I have bought new…but I have a lawn mower from 1977. Preventative maintenance and a little care goes a long way in keeping things running.

Once again Joe we find ourselves in complete accord here despite living in entirely different countries with on the face of it, a different culture. Yet it's as if we live next door to one another. Apart from the snow 😂.
I'm sometimes rather too eager to repair a failed piece of equipment when it's actually quite beyond it!
Decluttering and simplification of life really does reduce stress to such a point I feel rather too relaxed at times 😂. And as I now live on my own there's no pressure to do anything but that which pleases me. I love it 😊
I hope your day goes well - early afternoon here so a stroll down to the seaside seems very appealing. I love the sound of the surf breaking over the stones. More relaxation. See you next time 👍

Thank you very much for the mention Peter 👍 Listening to your memories brings back lots of memories for me too, and no doubt many others watching. We were very fortunate to be alive during that period of optimism after WW2, before a certain woman set about breaking up and selling off The UK. Certainly it wasn't all good but to buy your own home in your twenties is something almost nobody could achieve now. I wonder where that A65 is now?

    • @Lanes-Explorer5733

Yes I was chatting to the lass who has a thriving shoe repair business in Lancaster yesterday and she hadn't heard of Thatcher. We had to suffer her destruction of our precious industries, railways, energy - the list goes on...
But as you say we have been so fortunate otherwise. Safe areas to play in (wonderful bomb damaged areas to explore 😳) and a far simpler less aggressive way of life.
The A65 acquired a Watsonian sports sidecar and then I sold it to a Southampton lad. The number plate sdorns a VW Camper now according to the dvla.

  • @economicalrides
    @economicalrides 3 месяца назад +1

Well done Peter, you managed to talk and entertain for 20 minutes straight. Not sure how you did it, but you did it 👍🏻
Well as you know, I "made" the panniers for my Meteor, in so much as I "made them fit". So I'm considering them "made by me", with assistance from your good self of course !
England looking very green once again !
I grew up still in an era where we didn't really buy anything either. Often we would make do and mend. Get something that would sort of work, like a holdall, and then just figure out a way of attaching it to the bike ( usually involving bungees ). And of course 80% of everything I had was handed down. Either from my brother who was two years older or from the parents/grandparents.
It was grim in a way but we were happy because we expected nothing more.
The contrast with young folks these days is quite stark, to say the least.
How heavy were those wooden panniers by the way ? And how much heavier were they when it rained ? 😂
Cheers Peter. You are without doubt the Jack Hargreaves of the Hunter.
    Garry & Ruby
    Edited to add :
By the way. Years ago ( maybe 10 years ago ) when I was still subscribed to Classic Bike magazine, I had actually decided that probably the best classic bike for me to buy would be an A65 !
Like you said, fairly affordable, widely available ( given all of the variants BSA came up with ) and plenty fast enough to keep up with modern traffic.
Good to hear that you have only good memories of yours ! Once I moved to Spain, getting a British classic registered over here was going to be extremely difficult ( or impossible ), so I canned the idea. I think that if I still lived in the UK, I would have bought an A65 by now !

Well good morning to you both. Another mot day? Or simply making the most of it?
      Good to hear from you.
Great to hear your memories too, Garry and yes my clothes were often passed on from our next door neighbour who had a son a few years older. It didn't bother me at all as I didn't know any different. I also got the makings of a soap - box cart too so that was a real bonus.
These stories really seem to be striking a chord with viewers, don't they - I'm astonished.
Ah yes those panniers of yours... Lightweight and capacious as well as economical 😂. Nothing like that existed in 1970 so there was nothing else for it but set to on my home made kitchen table (yes, that too!) and make 'em. They were strong so certainly heavier than today's but were thoroughly waterproof with a rubber seal around the top lid which had a rather nice lock fitted. In fact they were very similar to today's Craven Dolomites (I think that's the model I plaguerised) with top access.
      Top box ditto.
Mum used to say I was vaccinated with a gramophone needle 😂😂
      Cheers both. Peter

Another excellent episode that sparked more than a few memories.
I got caught out by the 1st year of mopeds for 16ers.
After a Puch Maxi a Garelli Cross and a Fantic Chopper, I graduated to a C15 (ex plod bike) then quickly on to a 500 speed Twin. And then so many more Big pre-units.
The Hunter somehow reminds me of those earlier Brit twins.
I tend to modify anything I can get my hands on. I have the theory of "you can only buy close to what you want"
I have fitted some aftermarket stuff to both my Hunter and Meteor but was disappointed with it after as I could have probably done better myself. So the modifications proceeded.
Most people don't think like this theses days.
Love the idea of home build panniers. Check out Elsbeth Beird's solo world tour in the early 80. Most amazing home built MC luggage. A little bit extreme but very practical.

      @@Lanes-Explorer5733 hallo Peter.
No, I was a very pleased with the linkages from eBay, especially for the Meteor. I adjusted the two mounting points on the Hunter (not the linkage) to line up a little better and the Meteor gear pivot would benefit from a grease fitting, when I can get hold of a flush aircraft fitting. Until then, diluting the grease with break cleaner ensures penetration.
I was not so impressed with the GIVI pannier frames and the Hunter carrier.
The pannier frames stuck out unnecessarily far from the bike and the Hunter carrier stuck way up in the air at a weird angle.
This was adjusted on installation and now sits level with the seat and parallel to the ground.

    • @Lanes-Explorer5733
      @Lanes-Explorer5733  3 месяца назад +1

@@timsatchell6713 That's good about the linkages and having a means of getting grease into the Meteor and indeed, Hunter pivots is a good idea.
For some reason, pannier frame and rack makers seem to love sticking things out and up! Is it to make it easier to get in there to fix it all together? Like you I make mine as tight in as possible so well done for not accepting things as they are but modified to suit what you want.

We have had a few days of clear, crisp, dry winter weather this week. I was riding in 6 degrees C this morning, which is pretty cold for Auckland. Fortunately I have some good warm gear so my only gripe is a visor that insists on fogging up all the time.
Interesting to hear your pannier tales. I recently splashed out on a pair of Givi panniers including frames made especially for the Hunter. I have to say I am very happy with them. What a difference being able to carry a bit of luggage makes. It has made my bike a lot more usable.
