Painting Movie Scenes 🍿 Poster Color & Gouache Studies (Color Mixing & Matching practice)

  • In this video I am showing you my thought process behind and the execution of color studies in my watercolor sketchbook. I chose to paint movie scenes / film stills, because a lot of motion pictures have exceptionally good cinematography in regards to composition, framing, color palettes and grading.
My goal behind it was to improve my capabilities of color mixing, picking and matching. Often times I would use images for color reference - however, I fail to have my mixed paints look like the reference.
I figured, when doing studies it is best to focus on just one thing you want to improve on or else you get overwhelmed or sidetracked. Set a goal for the practice, what skills you want to improve specifically and then focus on just that.
Color science is a very complex subject and I realize I used to give too little thought into choosing a fitting and harmonic color scheme.
I love colors so much and am super tempted to use all of them in one artpiece, which can end up looking too bright, chaotic, hard to grasp. Limiting yourself and putting boundaries can be a good technique to improve your paintings, artworks and sketches.
The end result is not 100% accurate to the references, but I am still happy because I achieved my art goal which was to be more mindful of how I colour my works. I learned that I should think more in not just hues, but also saturation and brightness (basic color theory, basically).
I painted scenes from these movies:
    - Big Fish, directed by Tim Burton, 2003
    - Lost in Translation, directed by Sofia Coppola, 2003
    - Brooklyn, directed by John Crowley, 2015
    - Moonrise Kingdom, directed by Wes Anderson, 2012

This is my first video (and you can tell I am not used to speak into a camera in a foreign language but we'll get there). However, I enjoyed filming and editing it, put a lot of effort into it despite being a total videography noob. Had to learn editing from scratch ;)
I will be more mindful next time of better quality in regards to rersolution, timelapse speed, film grain and audio quality (and my rested b face XD).
Still, I hope you enjoyed watching it as much as me creating it for you and that you can take inspiration from it.

I am Monika (but most people call me Moni, pronounced Mo-knee) and I am a Berlin, Germany based certified Graphic Designer who quit the profession for something completely different in order to flee the "artistic burnout" and crunch culture present in that field.
Currently I assist physically impaired people in their daily life and use my additional leisure time for creative projects both in regards to art and music making.
My hopes for the future are that I can eventually switch over to working freelance. Until then I will be figuring out what my artistic goals are.

Monica your first video was amazing!! I love how these scene studies turned out and you are so right -- being worried about other people judging you is bullshit (so well said)! Keep practicing cause there is greatness in you!

Willow, I am so glad you enjoyed this video! Since it's my first video it is very dear to me :) It is not my most popular one but I remember making it so fondly and I am so happy that you liked the message as well as the studies :) Thanks for your comment on this video, reminds me I haven't done a study in a while ❤️

Wow, you have no idea how happy I am! I am german and feel insecure about my accent and limited word library, I always feel like I repeat the same phrases in a raspy voice. Thank you so much, and I am glad you liked the studies 🙏

Oh nice! I heard of practicing scenes in order to study the composition but didn't realize that you can also study the colour scheme. 3d animation scenes are so atmospheric and great for that 😍

    • @MoniDmajor
      @MoniDmajor  3 года назад +2

This is so true! I went for Live Action movies here because the colors, even though graded, are a little more realistic and I tend to do candy colors with little variation in tone and saturation, besides with animated scenes I would feel more pressure to get the characters looking right. I have a problem focusing on just one thing when doing studies and then I get overwhelmed so easily. That being said, I will pick some animated movie scenes for future studies anyway, probably some backgrounds.

I've always struggled with color. So much so that I've really kind of committed to working with a strictly black and white palette, with the occasional addition of a red accent here or there. But now I'm feeling less intimidated by color for some reason. I loved your experiment here and I think I will try it. I'll let you know how it goes. And thanks for the inspiration! I really enjoy your videos - keep 'em coming!

Thanks, Arthur! I get what you mean, for the longest of time I used to work with just a graphite pencil. Then I switched to working with colors and I guess I was just both excited and overwhelmed because all I could do was vibrant colors - barely ever introduced less saturated tones, because I was scared it would make my art look dull and lifeless. The results I got instead was candy colors overkill. Anyway, I hope you like that color study approach, it is an alternative to still life

Monika, you are just a screen natural! I notice, you don’t have many videos on your channel, and as I have just found you, thanks to Creating Cute Art here on RUclips who referenced you, I hope you may continue to produce videos for a very long time! Your movie still paintings were incredible. I can only speak as a viewer because as very much a beginner, I’m obviously hopeless at most things for now. A big thank you for getting up in front of that camera from Scotland! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿👩‍🎨🎨🖌

I don't post often but when I do I try to be of most value, you invest your precious time to watch after all, the downside is yes it takes longer for me to post anything and my video library is small. Your comment makes me want to keep going though, because that's what I strive for: to inspire and be of help, despite my fear of cameras plus depression ;) We all were beginners at some point btw and many times we think we are beginner level because we compare ourselves to the very best in the industry. And skill is not everything, anyway, one does not have to be the greatest painter, many who touch people's hearts with their art don't have the technical skills, and at the end of the day it's all about having fun! Greetings to Scotland (such a beautiful country!) from Germany :)

@@anitadavidson1266 You have no idea how much it helps to learn I am not the only one who struggles going from day to day, and no matter how hard it is, I survived depression once, many years ago, and I will this time (and so will YOU!) - we just need to be gentle and patient. Thanks for your response, Anita

Mesmerizing! Watching you painting those movie scenes was transcending! I sometimes take screenshots of a particularly beautiful movie scene, to paint in future ( sure, it will happen, haha😏😆 ). Waiting eagerly for your next video coming near soon on RUclips!😍🎬🍿🎞

Debjani, I read your comment today during work and I did not have the headspace to respond earlier, but now I am home. I just wanted to let you know, your comment made me so happy! This is my first video and I remember, I wasn’t thinking much about what I was doing I just pressed record, quickly placed the camera what felt right and never questioned myself, I was just doing it. I was in the zone. At that time I was at the crossroads to either start a music channel (my other hobby is music production that I started when Covid hit) hence why I have such a funny name :) I am into music and especially the key of D major is a love language in itself for me. Anyway, I loved how I took my time to make a track for this video, took my time editing it and I just really enjoyed the entire process. That video is really dear to me and it is the least popular on my channel. But today when you told me this was transcending, I got teary eyed because that was exactly what I was trying to convey and how I was feeling. What you said means a lot to me, more than you can imagine! Btw, I also pause movies when I see a breathtaking scene with awesome framing! So so happy you enjoyed it! May I ask what your name means?
