This was a terrific example of how making a color study can identify the key mixing solutions that will be needed in a more involved painting, and let the artist put the major contrasts and color relationships in context with the colors on the palette. The streak of neutral color wiped thin on the palette created instant contrast of chromatic intensity with the mixtures placed against it, so we were able to see very clearly how you narrowed down and adjusted each mixture. Also, we caught your reference to squinting your eyes at the subject, a great way to reduce shapes and contrasts to the significant ones. We also loved that color studies were called "low investment"- that is a really useful attitude, because artists often feel pressure to make all their easel time result in a presentation piece. All the small studies, sketches, and experimental pieces we do are valuable "investments" because they build skill and develop concepts for larger works, even if individually, they may not result in finished art.

So true. I’m trying to think of all of my work, even larger paintings, as investments for future work - it really helps to take the pressure off!
