I've been pretty overwhelmed with how to start when it came to colors, and so I've watched a number of videos on the topic, but I felt that there was something lacking in my work. I stumbled across this video and you explained your thought process behind the 3 step formula so well which made me excited to do more value and color studies. Great video and explanation. Can't thank you enough!
I would also suggest that people start out small. Like a banana or coffee cup. Some of your color studies, like a vase, grapes, etc., is a little busy for a fresh beginner to start on. It may discourage them due to the busy-ness of the subject. I would say start out simple and small and increase to more complex studies as your skill increases over months of practice.
I’ve always been intimidated by color in my art. Because of that I typically avoid it, this definitely made me feel more confident about it. I will definitely be studying and practicing it more!!
This was incredibly well explained! Your 3 step process for picking the right color is honestly so simple I never thought of it, and now I won't have to dread doing color studies anymore! 🖤
Hey guys! hope this video was helpful. It took me way too long to edit because I wanted to make it as informative as I could. Feel free to download the worksheet that's linked in the description, I would love to know if it was helpful! I can't wait to make more videos like this so don't forget to turn on post notifications so you don't miss out!
this video is SO HELPFUL, you have no idea how happy i am to find out about this video! I've always been struggling with color theory, and so clueless on how to do color studies. i always thought color is one of the most hardest and intimidating parts to learn in art. but after watching this video, I've definitely learnt a lot on how to do so! so, thank you very much for sharing! ❤️
Thank you for the comment! I can totally relate, It was so difficult for me to find videos that actually explained the process behind making colour studies, so I was too afraid to actually try for sooooo long. I was lucky enough to eventually get a hang of it and felt I had to share what I’ve learned to others who might be having similar problems, so I’m extremely glad the video was helpful! ☺️
Thanks for sharing this video! I have color blindness, so I always worry about whether my colors look good. When I was a kid, I thought I would never be an artist because of it, but as I've grown older, I've discovered that the only thing that holds me back is not trying to learn and study color. I enjoy color studies because they teach me about how I perceive color, and they help me observe a reference as a whole, instead of focusing on every detail. You explained that you start from value to hue and saturation, which was really easy for me to understand since I place a lot of emphasis on getting my values right before even thinking about color. Ever since I started doing studies it has made me much more confident when choosing colors. Great video! Hugs from Spain! 🥰🤗🤗🤗
Wow! I'm glad my video was able to resonate and be of help to you!! Thanks a bunch for sharing your story, It's incredibly inspiring to hear how you've overcome challenges related to color blindness and found a way to thrive as an artist. Thank you so much for your support, and I Wish you the best of luck on your art journey 🤗💛🤗💛
omg your video is so helpful!! i'm so glad that i found it! other color tutorials were uninformative for me course i'm not a beginner but i was so confused whith coloring so long. before that video! thank you so much!!
Very helpful, I’m going to try this. I have been trying to learn color theory and light through books plus studies, but my studies were too complicated (complex backgrounds, landscapes)… I like the simplicity of the type of references you chose, plus how you explain your process. Awesome.
I’ve been doing some color studies recently at this video seems very helpful! I definitely needed to get better at picking the colors by eye, so this was a great way to break it down!
This very helpful I've been struggling how to study color. Even bought the Color and Light book by James Gurney but having a hard time implementing what I've read. The tip where focusing on the value 1st before figuring out the Hue and Saturation is a very good tip and also figuring out between warm and cool light. Thank you!
This was really helpfull! I would love to see a tutorial about Procreate. I saw that you were using it for your study and now im wondering how you made that gray recktangle next to the reference and how you did not paint over the edges. Also what brushes you use for painting. I think at the beginning the pasic ones might be enough but are you using any other ones? sometimes i get really frustrated with the basic brushes and i dont know if its me and my skill or if i just need a brush with other functions... so i would love to hear your take on it. thank you and keep making your wonderfull videos :)
Hello! thank you for your coment! I'll definitely take note of the video idea for the future : ) I made the rectangle by duplicating the refrence photo, locking the layer and filling it in with a solid color. Then I made sure to set the layers I paint on to " cliping mask" that way eveything clips to within the shape of the rectangle below. you can watch this for better explanation >> ruclips.net/video/2P9Q_EOvU-Y/видео.html As for brushes, I have a video On my channel about my favorite procreate brushes, you can check that out if you're intrested. 90% of the paining was done using " Sharp Render" from Jingsketch Basic 10 brush pack, and the defualt round brush on procreate tweaked a bit to my preference! not all brushes work for everyone, so if you find you're struggling with the default brushes, try downloading some other brushes online. Hope this reply was helpful, if you still have questions feel free to ask 🤗
I don’t know if you do traditional art, but if you do, could you make a similar video but with watercolor or gouache perhaps? I feel like the concept here applies for traditional mediums as well but it’s a bit hard to grasp without seeing it. If you can’t that fine as well! I love your videos💕
These concepts does apply to traditional mediums as well. the only difference here is that the behavior of the paint and brush since they're separate mediums to begin with. nonetheless basic fundamentals such as interaction of light and color, form, shape, etc. are all still the same.
This is by far the most helpful video I've come across as a beginner with limited knowledge of colour theory and as someone who's terrified of colour hsfjsgjsg, tysm for this video!!
I started RUclips channel recently and now realize how hard it is to explain stuff and edit videos according to it Lol nice video well explained and good stuff.
Thank you for your comment! and I totally agree, I had to make constant edits to the script and got my boyfriend ( a non-artist) read through it. The idea was if I could get him to understand then it should be good enough, I'm glad it worked out in the end😂
I love you so so much!!!! I struggle with color so much but I decided I need to just start doing studies. Which brushes are you using cause there are so much brushes for smudge and painting and I have nooo idea where to begin. Again thank you. Today I did my first study of an Apple!
I'm glad you found the video helpful! 90% of the painting was done using " Sharp Render" from the Jingsketch Procreate Brushe pack as well as the default round brush on procreate tweaked a bit to my preference! I have the link to the brush pack in my description if you're interested in trying it out, I personally use it for all my paintings. but I should also mention that not all brushes work for everyone, these are simply the ones that work best for me and the look I personally want to achieve, good luck on your creative journey! 😊

Tradition art adds more variables to colour study. I would say to get used to digital and then traditional.

do ou do everything on one layer?
It depends, sometimes I do, but most of the time I use multiple layers to keep things organised and reduce the pressure of making mistakes
@@NeddyisNeddy thanks!

it's not a good idea to color pick colors from reference, you should instead train your eyes and pick colors yourself
