Liquitex Acrylic Gouache REVIEW ✨ Swatches & Painting Demo

  • In this video I am reviewing Acrylic Gouache by Liquitex. I compare it to Holbein Acryla Gouache. There is quite the hype going on when it comes to Acrylic Gouache and Holbein is being praised as the best. However, they are pricy and not available in many countries.
    I got 15 different Liquitex colors and put them to the test by trying them on a painting. Enjoy the summer vibes and paint along if you want :) I hope this is insightful and helps you determining wether or not these paints are an option for you.
    Content of this video:
    - Why did I get them?
    - Painting Demo (art timelapse) of me painting a portrait
    - Pros & Cons of these paints
    - How do they compare to Holbein Acryla Gouache
    - My conclusion
    I am still fairly new to RUclips. Please keep that in mind while watching it.
    That being said, your honest feedback on how I can improve my videos is highly appreciated.

    I clicked on the video because I was curious about the materials, but I quickly forgot about them and became focused on the painting. It's absolutely gorgeous! Never would I have thought that the simple sketch would turn into something so beautiful.
    Have you tried the Golden So Flat paints? They're not marketed as acrylic Gouache but acrylic Gouache is literally just matte acrylic paint and that's what they are.

    • @MoniDmajor
      @MoniDmajor  3 года назад +4

      Just finished a shitty workday and your comment brightened my mood. I always love to see simple sketches come to life, the surprise about the result, and never did I think anyone would experience that with my work. Thank you so much! And about the paints you mentioned: I never heard of them but it came to my attention that Liquitex has another product they advertise as a matte acrylic, which is basically what Gouache is. They even come in the same bottle as their Acrylic Gouache. I am curious about the difference, so I plan on grab 2-3 colors of those just to compare them against each other. The Golden product is probably similar to it.

      Hey Ramo, how are you? I constantly see the comment about acrylic gouache being "just acrylic paints with matte medium" around, so I decided to do some research about as I don't think Holbein and Turner acrylic gouache behaves the same way as acrylic paint. Acrylic gouache (except for Liquitex's) uses a different acrylic emulsion than regular acrylic paint and has a different water/emulsion/pigment ratio, hence its ability to be thinned down (not "dilluted") with water, just as regular gouache. This ability is what makes it be called "gouache" even if it isn't, it's been just a way to label it so people can understand how it works. Regular acrylic paints should be thinned down with mediums, and even if you can use a little bit of water instead it's good to know that water works a solvent rather than a fluid medium and because of that the paint breaks down and can result in undesired finishes. There lies the real difference :)

    Beautiful Monika. I received a small starter set of 20ml liquitex acrylic gouache for Christmas. I loved them, but then again I don’t own Holbein anything as feel nothing can possibly justify the price! You have shown me the possibilities of Liquitex and I am grateful. 👍🏻👩‍🎨🖌🎨⭐️

      Liquitex is an amazing acrylic gouache paint, there is no doubt about it! If you layer them the lower opacity issue is solved and the result looks fantastic, they just glide on the paper so smoothly and the colours pop! Congratulations to getting your Liquitex Set, I hope you will enjoy them just as much as I do! Holbein is fancy, yes, but where I live they are expensive and even today I still haven't gotten used to how fast they dry, so I mix Holbein with other acrylic gouache. Liquitex and Turner I prefer over Holbein, it just goes to show, just because something is popular doesn't mean it's for everyone. Thanks for reaching out to share this with me, happy painting and here's a virtual hug!

    Thanks for this! These paints were on sale and I was wondering if I should get them since the product page insisted they were very opaque. I've been using a cheap acrylic set I got a year or so ago and my main issue was that it took layer upon layer to get an opaque look, so I was very excited at the prospect of just needing one layer. However this went to show it wasn't as opaque as advertised and hardly better than what I own, so now I know I can keep looking.

    I wonder if its possible to mix acrylic medium with gouache to make DIY acryla gouache? or maybe, use gouache, and then add a layer of medium on top as to 'seal' in the paint underneath so that it doesn't mix with the next layer coming on top? am i even making sense?? I'm also only saying this because I also live in Germany and don't know where to buy any acryl-gouache paints :( Any tips on where to order from? Like the Turner paints?

    • @MoniDmajor
      @MoniDmajor  2 года назад +1

      Hey Prinny, what a great question! I wonder if it works, too, but I kinda doubt it, because basically acrylic gouache is just an acrylic paint with mattifying mediums in it, it isn’t really Gouache. Take out the Polymer Binder and I assume the Formula is still very different in nature. When you add that medium the Gouache still has Gum Arabic in it as well. If you paint with Golden so Flat or other matte Acrylics you will have a close impression to what Acrylic Gouache is like. I use Flashe Paints from Lefranc Borgeois in white instead of Acryla Gouache, because it’s cheaper and I use a lot of white. It’s a so cold Vynil Paint, but it works so well as an Acrylic Gouache substitute, so well I actually ordered some colours now. Gouache is chalky when applied thickly whereas Acryl Gouache has a completely different consistency. Oh, as to sealing the Gouache, you can use Fixative spray and wait before the next layer, it should be fine if the next layers aren’t too watery. Like I mentioned in both my haul videos I love to buy at Peter’s Art, it’s a Berlin based Shop that also has an online store. Hope this helps

  • @CreatingCuteArt
    @CreatingCuteArt 2 года назад +2

    Very pretty bottles. If I were ranking the three Acryl Gouache brands you've done videos on based on aesthetic of packaging, it would be Liquitex, Holbein, then Turner, but why would anyone rank on that irrelevant factor...

      @MoniDmajor  2 года назад +1

    Another beautiful painting! I have some Liquitex acrylic inks. They last forever. I have some minor issues with them but overall they are fantastic and high quality. One of my acrylic inks (which is basically just a more fluid form of paint) is opaque, and like you said, you need three coats for complete coverage. I loved hearing in your review that the Liquitex paints dry more slowly than holbein. I don't want to be under pressure with paints. I also don't love tubes. I might get a few of these and maybe some more Liquitex acrylic inks, which I recommend. BTW why did you use watercolor paper for this painting? It would seem like a waste of expensive paper for a plastic-based paint. Thanks again for another great review.

    • @MoniDmajor
      @MoniDmajor  2 года назад +2

      Thank you, Keren! I agree with you, Liquitex is a really amazing brand that makes somewhat affordable high quality products. Can you recommend another paper? I always buy watercolor paper because I work with Gouache and Watercolors the most, I just started to get into Acrylic Gouache this year. I love how acrylic gouache looks on watercolor paper, especially when it’s a textured paper, it resembles traditional Gouache a lot, that’s why I use it, and also I hate warping that’s why I tend to buy heavier paper in pads rather than loose paper or blocks that are just glued on one end (unless I am sketching). What paper would you rather use in my case?

    • @kerendn
      @kerendn 2 года назад +1

      @@MoniDmajor you're right, watercolor paper will warp less and feel less flimsy than mixed media paper, since it's heavier. Perhaps a non-cotton, cellulose watercolor paper will be cheaper, or maybe not. For example, St Cuthbert's Mill Bockingford. Your choice is probably best.

    • @MoniDmajor
      @MoniDmajor  2 года назад +1

      @@kerendn No, you are right, actually, I think a good Mixed Media paper is actually best for the look I am going for with Acrylic Gouache as I apply the paint much thicker for solid color blocks. Currently I don’t treat my paintings like watercolour paintings with wet thin washes, anyway, and Mixed Media Paper comes in glued pads as well. I heard of the paper you mentioned and I am sure I searched for it, it seems to not be available in most german shops, though. I got a really good one from Hahnemühle, though, but I don’t think it’s easy to get your hands on outside of Germany.

    • @kerendn
      @kerendn 2 года назад

      @@MoniDmajor as long as your paper doesn't buckle too much, mixed media paper is great since it's cheaper and also less fragile than watercolor paper. So if you sketch on it and erase I think it'll hold up better than watercolor paper.

    If you like acrylic gouache but want cheaper version go for Turner (you can buy at Jackson's art they ship to Germany).
