New Lidl 5 blade razor shaving / headshaving review. Uses GT5 system like Tesco & Cornerstone razor

  • One of my viewers pointed out that Lidl were swapping supplier of their razors.
    I had to go get one and review it before someone else did 😉.
    Turns out it is an Edgewell Personna GT5 system razor, the same blade system that is used by Tesco and Cornerstone' 5 bladed razor systems.

    I've been using those lidl blades for a couple of weeks now on my cornerstone razor. Really very pleased and glad to no longer be paying £14.99 anymore. Just shows you the mark up. Well done Lidl.

    Do you think the Lidl 5-blade is as good (for head-shaving) as it was always been considering the recent re-design and subsequent brief withdrawal? I know a few people have had problems with the "trimmer" component causing accidental cuts when switching direction, although I don't think that's been a problem for me personally.
    Been about a year since I purchased Lidl's 5-blade offering, it seems they are now blue and orange instead of black and white?

      It is no longer the Harry's Feintechnik product, but is now the Edgewell GT5 (same blades as used by Cornerstone).

      I hate to say it, we all have different skin types it might be as simple as that. One common issue is that people push the razor against the face. The razor needs to glide over the top, and the blades pull the hair out the skin a little before the next set cut them. If you push you can force the skin to insulate between the blades.
      The hydro 5 has a nice type of roll bar welded to each blade that helps to prevent that skin undulating between the blades (its also on their Rite Fit 5 used on home brands cartridges )
      Currently in Tesco and Wilkos (see my review). They also fit onto the Gillet Fusion range of handles these Rite Fit 5.

      RAYMOND MAIN the Sainsburys 6 blade is the Dorco Pace 6 blades which is also used by Dollar Shave Club and I have a review of DSC on my channel that you can watch. The do however use a less stylish handle. Personally I prefer the 3 blade version to the 6 blade, but then I do not use reverse trimmers. I will add your requests to my ever growing list of requests I have. I will get to them eventually, but my hair does not seem to grow fast enough to meet all the requests I am getting.

      rockall66 Now if you check out www.BuildersBlades.com this has the Caliber range of Personna razors. My favorite is the 3 blade, but the 5 is good as well. I particularly like the DynaShave handle. Either handle though is much better ergonomically, but the good news is apart from the low cost, it gets posted, and the Lidle GT5 blades would alsi fit. Its a great razor, so Boots, Superdrug, Morrisons, Asda also sell this Calibre range on their home brands. Edgwell's personna division is king of the home brands it seems.

      RAYMOND MAIN it is difficult to say. The more I used the Feintecnik blade the more i liked it, but the shaving style is different and requires longer strokes. I would say however that I prefer the Caliber 5 & 3 blades of Edgewell and is why for a promotion at work we used these (these are also used by Boots, Asda, Superdrug, Morrisons and others). I use this handle.
      I like the ergonomics. They dynamic head movement (similar to Gillette flex ball, but its Edgewell version).
      Unfortunately, again it comes with an orange blob on the core motion button (but a black permanent marker can help lol).
      I liked it so much we bought a load for our customers. Yes it fits the GT5 blades.

    I'm always looking for a good deal, but not at the expense of quality. I've tried most of the online shaving systems such as Harry's, Shavekit, etc., but I personally found the Cornerstone blades to be far superior to all the others I've tried. One reason is that the width of the blade is slightly narrower than Harry's & other blades I've tried & being that slightly narrower means you can shave more successfully if you have creases or skin folds on your face. The wider the blade the more growth will be missed in the lower parts of the crease or fold of the skin. Another reason is that even though I've got quite a tough beard, the blades virtually last twice as long as the other ones I've had previously. Therefore, I'm going to give these Lidl blades a go & see how they compare to the Cornerstone blades. At the price for the Lidl blades, which is really competitive, I'm not too sure if the quality will be the same, even though they are from the same manufacturer. I'm off to try them now.
    The last point to make, not on any specific make of blade, but the way you finally rinse your blade after you've used it ready for the next shave. Never use hot water for the final rinse of the blade, always use cold water. The reason, hot water as we all know separates limescale from the water, just like boiling water in a kettle, you see the build-up of limescale quite rapidly. The same applies to hot water if used to rinse your blade, it leaves a deposit of limescale that you won't be able to see but takes the sharpness away from the cutting edge of the blade & you end up with a dull blade & seemingly reduces the life of the blade. Hence, you may assume the blade didn't last as long.

    • @GeekOfShaves
      @GeekOfShaves  3 года назад +1

      You will find the blades are exactly the same. I love the theory on the hot water and lime scale build up in the blades, it sounds good, but I do not know how true it will be, but I am not saying its not true. I am litterally going to have to think of an experiment I can do to test that theory out. I litterally love this comment as it's really appealed to my Geek side.

    • @cooldriver
      @cooldriver 3 года назад +1

      @@GeekOfShaves Hi, Thanks for the reply. I hope you get the same results as I did when testing hot water on the final rinse against using cold water. I now find that using the Cornerstone blades & rinsing with cold water I usually get around 3 - 4 weeks shave out of a blade against 1½ - 2 shaves when rinsing with hot water. As you appreciate, the number of weeks uses you get from a blade is not wholly dependent on rinsing either way, but really on how tough your stubble is. So the number of weeks I get from the blades I use is from my experience & may not be the same for anyone else. I'm only highlighting this so other reviewers are not going to expect the same usage from their blades & they could expect less than or even more than the number of weeks use they get from their blades due to how tough their stubble is. Cheers

      @GeekOfShaves  6 лет назад

      Howard Shore thank you for the support in watching. I think with regards to the shave clubs it depends on what you value. Do you value subscription service? Do you value them being posted (and maybe having to go collect from post office)? Do you value their social media content (but you could just like their channel anyway). If you do place a value on these then they may work for you, but consumers in the UK do not seem that bothered about these functions or paying the premium for them. Lets face it though, the premium is less than a large take away coffee from a major chain, so it wont break the bank for most people.
