I did that for a long time with great results...olive oil in a small container...after shaving get the razor blades as dry as you can first, then just sit the cartridge in the oil...no rust whatsoever...😮
Olive and coconut oil may gather more bacteria around the blades. Remember that to disinfect the razor you need an alcohol so w bathroom cleaner would be better option.
A shower cleaner is always some kind of acidic solution for descaling surfaces. But it would also act to passivate the stainless steel, removing free iron and rust from the surface, leaving behind stable chrome, as well as descaling it. Any scale would tend to trap water and salts against the blade and encourage rust, so it's all to the good.
Six years ago, you wrote that you “have since moved away from this toxic technique”. I’m air drying with the blade cartridge in front of a fan. I have four smooth uses so far when three used to be the limit after shaking and leaving on the counter.
It's really does clean all what's left behind after shaving. I spray a bit on my razor blades after shaving and I leave it for 24 hours with my window open so the razor can dry I was so surprised when I looked at my razor the next day, the blades are shining like brand new. Another great cleaning tip is use baby wipes to clean your blades after each shave to.
I just use a regular Gillette Mach III and go through a 4 pack of blades a year, maybe less. I actually don't remember the last time I changed out a cartridge. I dry my blades in the piles of a towel and then put it in my drawer. DON'T store your blades with any water on them.

Blades are cheaper also. I use old safety razor with double edge “Feather” brand blades. Sharpest blades I have ever used. I also rinse razor with hot water after a shave and dip in rubbing alcohol.
I have fine facial hair that grows slowly and is not thick. I shave my cheeks and neck every other day. For the past 20+ years I have been using the same method of cleaning my Gillette razor (used to be 4 blades, now they have 5) and although a single razor cartridge has normally lasted me 6-9 months, I have decided that at the end of this month I am going to start changing them out every 2 or 3 months. So what do I use? I use isopropyl alcohol from Walmart. The clear plasitc bottles used to have a small hole and a bottle would last me over a year, but now they have a larger hole. I still am re-using the lid from before as they fit, but for those with the newer bottles, open the flip top and use a stick needle to poke a hole in the paper verses unscrewing the lid and removing the paper, that way you can get a smaller stream of alocohol coming out, when pouring it over your razor blade. I got the idea of using alcohol when going to a barber shop and noticing all of their combs, scissors, thinning scissors and other cuttind devices were placed in a clear glass cylinder filled with alcohol. I asked the beautician about it and was told she using the alcohol because it disinfect everything and if it is a cutting tool, it will help it reamin sharper longer.

Hi Michael. Good advice, but how do you clean the shaving cream and hair off the blade before you dry. I'm have a tough time and running through or swishing it with water doesn't seem to do it. Thanks!
@Gary de Sesa I do short strokes and rinse under hot running water. When done shaving I strop the razor on my arm. Then use a hair dryer. I never had an issue with shaving cream that I could see anyways.
Put the blade in a olive oil cup, so the air not coming into the blade and rost, then next day you take hot water on and clean the blades, and start shaving again....
Really, all you have to do is lay the razor upside down as soon as your finished (to where the metal blade(s) is not touching any surface ). I use the same blade for a year with no problem and it never leaves my shower.
when you shave you get small cuts in your skin so if your have shower cleaner crap baked on to your razor and use it,you now have shower cleaner in your skin/system = not good.
