- This 1950s video features composer, guitarist Vicente Gomez performing some of his Alegrias composition.
For those unfamiliar with Gomez, he was born in Madrid in 1911 and got an early start in music performing flamenco in his father's red light district tavern by the age of 8. Concert pianist Arthur Rubenstein eventually heard him play (presumably not while frequenting Madrid's red light district!) and encouraged him to pursue a professional career. He toured the world performing in the 1930s and became a U.S. citizen in the 1940s. He was drafted into the Army in 1943 and discharged in 1946, after which he opened a nightclub in New York, performing classical and flamenco music on his guitar nightly. During this period he also served as President of the New York Classical Guitar Society. In the 1950s he moved to Los Angeles and opened "The Academy of Spanish Arts" to teach classical and flamenco guitar, flamenco dancing, Spanish language, etc. He was also a frequent contributor to film music.
Vicente Gomez passed away in December 2001 at the age of 90, just two months after his wife passed away.
I studied classical and flamenco guitar under Gomez 50 years ago. A great and gentle person. I still have compositions and notations in his handwriting.
Oh god. That sounds so nostalgic. To have handwritings of a person dead long ago, and having the memories flood you.
I would pay for copies. His and Diego Del Gastor's.
So do you play well now?
I'd really like to know how he achieved that amazing right hand technique(obviously through practice but what exactly)! He's definitely one of the best guitarists i've ever heard.Easily in the top 3.That playing......my God!
I read he grew up in his fathers spanish bar, and learnt to play from the passing gypsy guitarists. Self taught musos are always No.1. Long live Senor Gomez!
Rand - me too. I studied with Gomez more than 50 years ago and had a panic attack and quit the day before I was supposed to do my first concert. I went on to have a pretty good career on guitar but not flamenco or classical guitar. I will always remember one day I showed up for a lesson and reached into my pocket and pulled out a guitar pick. I thought "The Senor" was going to cry. He looked into my eyes and said with this heavy Spanish accent "was a matta you kiddy, you wanna you whole life to play like a hill billy"? He was a very sweet man one thing I remember about him is he loved his dogs and had Doberman Pinchers.
Larry Brown, did "The Senor" never heard about Django Rheinhardt ?
An extraordinary artist and gentleman. He co-founded the Academy Awards at his club in New York City, La Zambra. His studio was next to my office in Burbank years ago and he set some of my songs to classical guitar. A cherished memory.
Vincente was my Godfather and I learned to play at a very young age. May he and Betty, my Godmother, rest in peace...
This guys actually enjoying himself. He's having a great time. What a player! His enthusiasm shows so much in this vibrant performance.
holy shit! that was nuts! This man is so awesome.....
Vicente Gomez had an organic festive happiness that exploded. He plucked the sound of Spain from the guitar and it told a story of romance & conquest.
When the music takes you somewhere visually and you are physically wrapped up in it's temperance before the next volley, it inspires. You leave the room numb from it's effect. But that's just my experience.
He sure looks like one happy guy!
Superior playing. Just wow.
So much rhythmic and melodious thats why flamenco is so much different from other styles of music. sad that world lost such a beautiful and magnificent maestro of flamenco guitar .. ..
This is so mind blowing, words cannot convey. It's almost super human how well he plays.
I like his happy face! :)
Me too!!
Me too! :)
Just fabulous....some people
should never die!
His smile is pure joy - this made my day totally best vid I have seen in a while. Very fluid right hand as well and so clean with the thumb
"Learning how to play was easy, learning how to smile at the same time took years."
To learn that one must learn to play with the soul
A real Guitar Genius,...and a great composer!!!!
Every note he plays is an eargasm, pure and simple. That's why he is smiling so much xD
Never met this master though around the 1950s I acquired two LP albums of his wonderful guitar playing. I'm 85 and continue to enjoy his and other guitar master's when situations present an oppoprtunity to listen.
this guy is an absolute joy to watch. what a performance
I heard about Vicente Gomez from my aunt and uncle who lived in Whittier, California. My aunt, Esperanza (Atunes) Drayer and Uncle Herman Sylvester Drayer knew him very well. They had autographed photographs of him and mentioned his name several times. While watching a movie one day I saw him playing. It was beautiful.
I looked up my name and found something truly amazing 👏
That is a man right at home with his music. I'm inspired!
me gusta este Alegria, tremendo!
Passion-Dedication-Joy = Great Vicente Gomez!
The magic of RUclips::::Rare footage. I've never seen Vincente Gomez before,--- hear him play, but never seen him play. Thanks for posting this............He smiles because he loves and respects his music, and because he loves and respects his audience.
This is what im talking about, a guy who can play and smile. You can tell he loves his instrument and his art. Some people just focus too much on learning and forget about "music". Although flamenco / classical guitar is very serious and requires alot of technique and practice.
This is what I watch when the things that impress most people begin to seem impressive. True mastery is seldom seen at this level.
Man, the classic guys back then were burnin'.
Never seen a flamenco player so happy...he's smiling? What? haha
i don't know what amazed me more, the guitar or his facial expressions.
You should play this every morning it just lifts you for the day,,,Vincente makes the Flamenco sing!!!
i love it how happy he is...he is making me happy!!! GREAT GUY!!!
lola
So inspire, look at the way he plays so joyful and he has flow with the music.
Muchas gracias.
Music is the language of the soul, and boy oh boy does this man have a soul! =D
Absolutely fantastic - topped off with a smiley face and shiny shoes.
this great guitar was my lower neighbor ... he lived in Toluca Lake,Ca .... i helped him move outta his studio in burbank right of Magnolia blvd back in 2001 ..... he gave me a demostation of his masterpiece... i wish back then i could got his autograph...
One of his memorable contributions was a 2 min guitar solo in the famous movie " Blood and Sand" with Tyrone Power and Rita Hayward circa 1950s. This scene was what inspired me to learn to play flamenco guitar.
Kevin C nice, I was inspired by Paco in the Camaron movie, and I'm from Jerez, hahaha, I discovered the genre while living in Florida and what a trip! Arzaa
I found the LP ' The Artistry of Vicente Gomez' in a little antique store in the Catskills. $1.50. Out of curiousity I Googled him, and it led me here. I am most definitely a new Vicente Gomez enthusiast. Fantastic.

His technique amazes me. I strife to play that well in my lifetime.
Beautiful piece played here,,,enjoyed.
The best flamenco guitar. Today's young players are just appearances.
Absolute No.1 flamenco on RUclips
This guy was my neighbor for 6 years and i had no idea who he was til my Dad told me about him.....He lived in Toluca Lake in his last years and had a studio in Burbank off of Magnolia ave .....GREAT GUITAR PLAYER and a GOOD MAN ....RIP 1913?-2002
Beautiful technique in both hands. WOW!
OMG, he is so amazing. I think I will need 2 or 3 lifetimes to play the guitar like that. :))
There is no question in my mind that this is the greatest "Alegrias" (Also found on the Decca Gomez LP "Guitar Recital")ever recorded. He is THE greatest master of the guitar and no other flamenco player can quite match this level of perfection. Thank you for posting this!
Passions run so hot among flamenco guitar aficionados that anyone proclaiming any guitarist to be the best is risking open warfare! But I certainly would place Gomez among the top. It's amazing he didn't achieve the level of recognition during his lifetime as other flamenco masters.
If I could play like that I’d be smiling too.
AmazinG To The Core! ,. i Had Smile On My Face Throughout!
shreddin old school with a smile
Director: "I want you to smile, right? But imagine everyone's watching from really, really far away."
Killer technique .. fast .. precise .. Master !!
omg i love the smile! he's sooo happy
love these old vids
this guy just makes me smile!
classic
Many, many thanks. The first LP I bought in my life had the title: "The romantic guitar of Vicente Gomez", with pieces like La Macarena, Malagueña, Habanera, Marieta, La Cumparsita and others. Unfortunately, he seems not to become famous. With pleasure and happiness I could meet him in Video. many thanks, indeed.
God I love this smile. Pure joy.
Such joy on his face
Super good!
this is incredible
wat a happy looking fella.gotta love that smile
Just so fantastic!!!
that was amazing.
awesome player! bravo!!
Every time he smiles he is subtly mocking me and letting me know I will never be this good.
happiest guitar player in the world
this is amazing. and no wonder he has the title of master up in the title. it's incredible
this is so crazy go nuts, he is amazing!!!!!!
I took guitar lessons from Vicente around 1985. He had a small studio in Burbank, California. It was on Burbank blvd, just down the block from, I think, Buena Vista st.
He was a very disciplined, and friendly instructor.
I've never heard of this guy, but I really like his style and this rhythm! Very good =)
Vincente Gomez wrote and played all the guitar music for a movie titled "The Fighter" back in the 50's.
The male lead in that movie was Richard Conte. I bought the LP album when it came out. But I played it so much I wore the record out. I wish I could find a CD of it. The music was outstanding.
Fookin amazing!!
another great inspiration for me , Alex de Lisa ♪♥♪
What great guitar playing !
Maestro!
So awesome lol how can anybody take the time to dislike this?
I can't agree that he was "the greatest guitar player ever". One would have to exclude many greats for him to be the greatest. But he was a great player. Among the greats we can include, of course, Segovia, Williams, Parkening, etc. And for Flamenco ? Who can forget the remarkable Carlos Montoya, and Manitas de Plata ? Of course, there are others.
Amazing
Thanks very much for this rare and valuable video! Gomez is a really great figure in the guitar world. And yes, there is a caste of critics who may only critisize but nothing more. Those who can play themselves never will search for minor bags to point and thus to show how "Wise" they are.
i don't ever think I've heard such a rich sound coming from an acoustic on the fast parts.
