I met Al Di Meola, Paco De Lucia, and John McLaughlin by accident. One evening in Dallas--must've been back in the 80s--a friend of mine, classical guitarist Chris Carrington was playing at a small restaurant (Jennyvine's) and there they were at a back table listening. No one else recognized them but Chris and me. We sat and talked to them for a good while--thought Paco didn't speak much English. It remains one of the amazing moments of my life.
I know all 4 of them. I lived in Dallas for about 8 years. Know Chris too. Visited his shop and checked out a few guitars and heard him play too. He played with Al Di Meola in many concerts.
Maravillosa experiencia.
This is, without a doubt, one of the greatest musical performances I've ever watched. Just two masters of their craft having a conversation through music.

When I was 11 or 12 my grandfather gave me some dusty old flamenco lessons that were printed ages ago and on yellowed paper and were wrinkled but still in tact. I also got cassettes and old VHS with a lesson or two. I didn’t have a guitar for another year or so, but the anticipation to play because of this and because of listening to his old cassette tapes that I had an immense passion for learning the instrument and for Flamenco and Classical guitar. I turned onto another Punk and talked trash about virtuosic guitar playing. Now much older I go back to these videos and wish to relive that moment early on that got me started in the first place, and I try to learn like I was supposed to. Thank you Paco.

I will always look at Mr. Di Meola as one of just a very few of the worlds best at his craft ( Mr. De Lucia also ). He gave me a moment without me asking and I will forever hold that ARTIST as giant among men. May the Gods always protect him & his loved ones. Thank you, Mr. De Meola
Does anyone else realize how they communicate with their eyes all the time? Its like they were so used to play with each other and also play so well that they kind of just improvise.
They have played a lot together over more than a decade. Paco came to the us and made music here, met with Aldi and many others. They played, and toured together. What you see as improv is actually something called " play". It's a phenomenon with professional musicians where one goes after another in a kind of " random" guitar streak but they still need to be in tune with the music. So they can't wonder off from flamenco to jazz you see. This requires immense knowledge on sounds, chords, speed, timing and knowledge on the guitar. It's nothing short of amazing.
Dois gênios da guitarra. RIP, Paco.
I saw both legendary guitarists in concert in 1981. What a memorable night it was..thank you for sharing. Paco really shined when he played by himself. May he rest in peace!
I am crying! Magnificent. Heard this many years ago. These masters are the reason for my never dying love of guitar music as a voice every bit as powerful as any overvalued operasinger. The voice of music, soul and dedication.
If it were necessary to say who is the god of the Spanish and classical guitar without a doubt it is PACO DE LUCIA, rest in peace, teacher and example to follow, in heaven they are enjoying good music and free.
How I love the magic of the original. But how I love the relaxed maturity of this. 1985 concert in Hammersmith UK was Godly...xxxxxxxxx R.I.P. Paco. You made life so wondrous for me as me as a guitar tryer !!! XXX
Beautiful. Always one phrase ahead. Don't know how else to describe it. Such beautiful music that catches out your ears. Always ahead of the game. Beautiful and genius. I keep coming back to this video as it captivates me so much. Put simply. This makes me happy. This makes me smile. Music is love. Thank you Al Di Meola and thank you Paco de Lucia. In music you both live and your music will always live on.x
Amazing these guys jamming after over 40 years since they first play this song. I have 70's album with this and play it all the time. Great guitar tune.
These guys stared into each other's eyes as much as they did at their fretboard throughout the whole 9 minute piece and they still played it with precision beyond that of almost any other classical/flamenco guitarist to date. I wish Paco could still be here to share his greatness with the world.
The really cool ting is, at this level, it's not about perfection but being able to witness the intertwining of gifting and spirits and having your brainwaves move in sympathy with sound.
I ran into Al di Meola a couple years ago at an airport in New York City. He was just standing in the security line like everyone else. Nobody seemed to recognize him at all. But I knew who he was so I gave him a little nod and a smile. He grinned. Once inside the terminal I again saw him again browsing magazines by himself. It was definitely strange to see a musician of his stature just hanging around unbothered at all, totally anonymous, no celebrity fuss whatsoever. But on stage, he's like a legend. As a casual guitarist I am a bit familiar with his music, and definitely his work with the trio, more so back in the 90s. But I definitely know his status. I couldn't think of anything worthwhile to say to him, so I didn't bother. It was a brief encounter, but still kind of cool.
I would have had to shake his hand and give thanks. That was a once in a lifetime opportunity. But I would have been restrained and not raise a fuss. Amazing story....
I went to an Al Di Meola guitar workshop soon after the San Francisco recording came out. He was showing us how he was playing the fast runs/riffs. Al laughed when he shared that he had to keep up with Paco because Paco essentially had 5 picks on his right hand and Al only had one. Also impressed by how Paco gets to the end of the fretboard without a cutaway. Both are just exceptional players.
Donald Mach they didn't. Most of it is improvised on the spot. As far as I know, Al was in the audience when Paco asked him to play with him for the last song which would end up being the last time they ever played together. It also happens to be, in my opinion, the best rendition of Mediterranean Sundance. Simply amazing.
Paco de Lucia .... If someone asked me about the art of flamenco, I would definitely tell him that the Paco de Lucia guitar and its music are what you are looking for🌍
An amazing and masterful performance! Mediterranean Sundance with Al and Paco is one of my very favorite all-time songs. Thank you for posting this concert footage. The virtuosic skill, the tasty Latin rhythms, the intertwining of their playing, the joy between two elite artists pushing each other...it doesn't get better than this!
incredible. Both styles are so different but create this great fusion. Usually I close my eyes to enjoy the music, but with these two masters it is clear that watching them while performing makes the piece even better, if possible.
I agree....in fact, with this kind of musical exchange, I can't just listen to it...I find this so "VISUAL"......this music is more about sheer technique/speed (which I DO appreciate!), and not so much about "feel" and "emotion"......
Absolutely stunning. One can see the detail passion in players eyes and the confirmation in nods of the heads.. More than just teamwork A clear love for the music..and how it should be presented.. Just wonderful.. Simon a brit 🇬🇧 in Spain 🇪🇦
Utterly mesmerizing: two distinct styles played by two of the Jedi masters of their craft. The only limitation Paco and Al face is that of their own exquisite imaginations.
40 years ago I thought this was the best acoustic guitar instrumental I'd ever heard. I still think it's great. Each of them a master in his own right, but together they are almost too much to listen to simultaneously. RIP Paco and thanks for many great performances.

De Meola
Jeff. I know u r a young man. Your obvious respect for the man is telling. Not all of the younger generation are conceited. ty
Imagine being SO (pretty) GREAT, and yet also so real and unpretentious? Boggles the Mind. I Love Human Beings. He is a Fine Example.
It's amazing how much they look at each other. The song is improv - they are feeding off each other while their hands are doing amazing runs.
Clase❤❤❤
Geniales 😊
@@clarapereiropardo9689la verdad que si!
Does anyone else realize how they communicate with their eyes all the time? Its like they were so used to play with each other and also play so well that they kind of just improvise.
They actually improvise- a lot...
Al is my favorite, but good lord, there will never be another like Paco.. Simply amazing.

That is an outstanding story. :)
I would have had to shake his hand and give thanks. That was a once in a lifetime opportunity.
But I would have been restrained and not raise a fuss.
Amazing story....
lol
Problem?

What a great feeling to see these guys playing together. And I think they enjoy it even more than us!

It's incredible how naturally Master Paco was playing. It seems playing for him on outstanding level was like piece a cake. Absolute legend.
Rest In Peace senior De Lucia.

Can't even imagine how long Paco and Al rehursed this to play it so flawlessly! Outstanding performance!!
Hats off to whom ever filmed this!
Magnificent filming
More than just teamwork
A clear love for the music..and how it should be presented..
Just wonderful..

Bueno vosotros tenéis a цой.
Un abrazo.
Utterly mesmerizing: two distinct styles played by two of the Jedi masters of their craft. The only limitation Paco and Al face is that of their own exquisite imaginations.
Its like both of their spirits are talking to each other, and their voice is comming from their guitars. Such a harmonic argument!
40 years ago I thought this was the best acoustic guitar instrumental I'd ever heard. I still think it's great. Each of them a master in his own right, but together they are almost too much to listen to simultaneously. RIP Paco and thanks for many great performances.
There will never be another like Paco. Sure miss him.
Best live guitar performance I've ever seen, absolute masterpiece

Yo no invento nada.

YOU guys are amazing, thank you for sharing this unique performance.
Wish that I could’ve seen this show. These two guys watching and supporting each other with wordless communication and challenging each other to go just a little farther. Amazing to see. So glad for RUclips having these moments on video.
This is meeting of the spirits, just as what the record label said. Both are top of their food chain, loved and admired by their colleagues. I love Flamenco and so Paco will always on top of my list. Drove 5 hrs once to watch Paco in Dallas years back when he was in his mid 50s. I was saddened by the news when I heard he passed away. But it was peaceful.
May you Rest In Peace Maestro’

The name is from a Belgian Cartoon called Lucky Luke, in which Lucky Luke is the main character, and he’s a lonesome cowboy lol. I grew up in Vietnam way back. There were some comic books remained even after the communist regime taken over in 1975. I used to read them when I was a kid, could barely remember anything but the name doesn’t fade. All the kids loved Lucky Luke. I was no exception. The good ol’e days....
