I met Al Di Meola, Paco De Lucia, and John McLaughlin by accident. One evening in Dallas--must've been back in the 80s--a friend of mine, classical guitarist Chris Carrington was playing at a small restaurant (Jennyvine's) and there they were at a back table listening. No one else recognized them but Chris and me. We sat and talked to them for a good while--thought Paco didn't speak much English. It remains one of the amazing moments of my life.
I know all 4 of them. I lived in Dallas for about 8 years. Know Chris too. Visited his shop and checked out a few guitars and heard him play too. He played with Al Di Meola in many concerts.
Maravillosa experiencia.

In 1980 I discovered them..but I was too immature to look past all the fast riffs and see the essence of their connection and rhythm etc. To see this video of that all these years later brings great joy! Absolute legends.
I ran into Al di Meola a couple years ago at an airport in New York City. He was just standing in the security line like everyone else. Nobody seemed to recognize him at all. But I knew who he was so I gave him a little nod and a smile. He grinned. Once inside the terminal I again saw him again browsing magazines by himself. It was definitely strange to see a musician of his stature just hanging around unbothered at all, totally anonymous, no celebrity fuss whatsoever. But on stage, he's like a legend. As a casual guitarist I am a bit familiar with his music, and definitely his work with the trio, more so back in the 90s. But I definitely know his status. I couldn't think of anything worthwhile to say to him, so I didn't bother. It was a brief encounter, but still kind of cool.
I would have had to shake his hand and give thanks. That was a once in a lifetime opportunity. But I would have been restrained and not raise a fuss. Amazing story....

Bravo a ambos.
I saw the trio of DiMeola, McLaughlin, and DeLucia with special guest Steve Morse at the Tower Theater back in the early 80's. They played Fantasia Suite to close, and Morse gave up about halfway through and just sat back and enjoyed the show along with the rest of us. I'll never forget it.
Does anyone else realize how they communicate with their eyes all the time? Its like they were so used to play with each other and also play so well that they kind of just improvise.
They have played a lot together over more than a decade. Paco came to the us and made music here, met with Aldi and many others. They played, and toured together. What you see as improv is actually something called " play". It's a phenomenon with professional musicians where one goes after another in a kind of " random" guitar streak but they still need to be in tune with the music. So they can't wonder off from flamenco to jazz you see. This requires immense knowledge on sounds, chords, speed, timing and knowledge on the guitar. It's nothing short of amazing.
After his show in a small club in tulsa , Mr. di Meola & myself talked for a while. He is a very nice man and had no problem sitting down with a fan and just talking. I will always look at Mr. Di Meola as one of just a very few of the worlds best at his craft ( Mr. De Lucia also ). He gave me a moment without me asking and I will forever hold that ARTIST as giant among men. May the Gods always protect him & his loved ones. Thank you, Mr. De Meola
Paco de Lucia .... If someone asked me about the art of flamenco, I would definitely tell him that the Paco de Lucia guitar and its music are what you are looking for🌍
I have the utmost respect for the guitar skills of Al Di Meola. Paco is my favorite and I think he will always be! I don't care what other players can do. Paco de Lucia touches my heart when I hear that apparently humble man "Master" the guitar!

I went to an Al Di Meola guitar workshop soon after the San Francisco recording came out. He was showing us how he was playing the fast runs/riffs. Al laughed when he shared that he had to keep up with Paco because Paco essentially had 5 picks on his right hand and Al only had one. Also impressed by how Paco gets to the end of the fretboard without a cutaway. Both are just exceptional players.

Paco de Lucia's legacy and his handing over the torch of Spanish classic guitar feel and soul to modern world madness of high pick precision and determination. RIP
I don't see him handing over anything - He has his lofty picado standard with his independent thumb (for bass answers), that a pick player can't quite match, though DiMeola is close when playing on adjacent strings.

They both play very well together. That's important. No guitar player dominates. It's amazing how they can play fast run, and it all sounds good. Very melodic.
These guys stared into each other's eyes as much as they did at their fretboard throughout the whole 9 minute piece and they still played it with precision beyond that of almost any other classical/flamenco guitarist to date. I wish Paco could still be here to share his greatness with the world.
The really cool ting is, at this level, it's not about perfection but being able to witness the intertwining of gifting and spirits and having your brainwaves move in sympathy with sound.
Paco de Lucia's right hand technique is incredible. A wonderful duet. Two of the same type of guys, having fun and challenging each other. Thanks for uploading.
When I was 11 or 12 my grandfather gave me some dusty old flamenco lessons that were printed ages ago and on yellowed paper and were wrinkled but still in tact. I also got cassettes and old VHS with a lesson or two. I didn’t have a guitar for another year or so, but the anticipation to play because of this and because of listening to his old cassette tapes that I had an immense passion for learning the instrument and for Flamenco and Classical guitar. It’s too bad I got into Nirvana and Punk rock a year later and it completely destroyed that sense of virtuosity that I was so fond of early on. I turned onto another Punk and talked trash about virtuosic guitar playing. Now much older I go back to these videos and wish to relive that moment early on that got me started in the first place, and I try to learn like I was supposed to. Thank you Paco.
Paco is proof of what a guitar player can become. The effortless skill is like that of Buddy Rich when he played drums. Only he could do what he could do and he knew it.
Anything good that one says about this performance is bound to be a huge understatement. Words cannot express the greatness. One can only listen in awesome silence.

Amazing these guys jamming after over 40 years since they first play this song. I have 70's album with this and play it all the time. Great guitar tune.
Absolutely stunning. One can see the detail passion in players eyes and the confirmation in nods of the heads.. More than just teamwork A clear love for the music..and how it should be presented.. Just wonderful.. Simon a brit 🇬🇧 in Spain 🇪🇦
Donald Mach they didn't. Most of it is improvised on the spot. As far as I know, Al was in the audience when Paco asked him to play with him for the last song which would end up being the last time they ever played together. It also happens to be, in my opinion, the best rendition of Mediterranean Sundance. Simply amazing.
Hey Reeshi Gupta, are you an Indian with love for Paco and flamenco? I am a Gupta, too, and love that music; i got to know the Maestro a bit as an organizer...

This is meeting of the spirits, just as what the record label said. Both are top of their food chain, loved and admired by their colleagues. I love Flamenco and so Paco will always on top of my list. Drove 5 hrs once to watch Paco in Dallas years back when he was in his mid 50s. I was saddened by the news when I heard he passed away. But it was peaceful. May you Rest In Peace Maestro’ Siempre lo mejor!
JeanPaul Logiotatos That’s cool man :) The name is from a Belgian Cartoon called Lucky Luke, in which Lucky Luke is the main character, and he’s a lonesome cowboy lol. I grew up in Vietnam way back. There were some comic books remained even after the communist regime taken over in 1975. I used to read them when I was a kid, could barely remember anything but the name doesn’t fade. All the kids loved Lucky Luke. I was no exception. The good ol’e days....

I've listened to the original version in Elegant Gipsy maybe more than 10 000 times in 37 years, never had enough of it!
😢 RIP Paco!
🇫🇷 Magnifique.
Elegancia y pureza flamenco a su máxima expresión.
Paco de Lucia's right hand technique is incredible. A wonderful duet. Two of the same type of guys, having fun and challenging each other. Thanks for uploading.
It is truly unbelievable. He does with two fingers what most of us cannot even do with a pick.
This song is called Río ancho (wide river) in the flamenco original. ruclips.net/video/UVk7eUmzdXo/видео.html Nirvana and punk is also good :)
Great comment.
This wasn't a competition, Al was in a regular class with the Master. RIP Mister Paco. The speed of his fingers was out of this world.
Paco is proof of what a guitar player can become. The effortless skill is like that of Buddy Rich when he played drums. Only he could do what he could do and he knew it.
The dynamics and intensity of Paco's playing are really evident here. What an absolute master.
IMPRESIONANTE!, DELICIOSO! no me canso nunca de escuchar esta versión, mas la escucho mas me gusta
Anything good that one says about this performance is bound to be a huge understatement. Words cannot express the greatness. One can only listen in awesome silence.
Grande como el uno
musket 0402 What you said is a huge understatement!
Amazing these guys jamming after over 40 years since they first play this song. I have 70's album with this and play it all the time. Great guitar tune.
The intense love they show each other renews a hope and faith in humanity that sustains me.
Absolutely stunning.
One can see the detail passion in players eyes and the confirmation in nods of the heads..
More than just teamwork
A clear love for the music..and how it should be presented..
Just wonderful..
Simon a brit 🇬🇧 in Spain 🇪🇦
Can't even imagine how long Paco and Al rehursed this to play it so flawlessly! Outstanding performance!!
Donald Mach they didn't. Most of it is improvised on the spot. As far as I know, Al was in the audience when Paco asked him to play with him for the last song which would end up being the last time they ever played together. It also happens to be, in my opinion, the best rendition of Mediterranean Sundance. Simply amazing.
rest in peace Paco sir u meant a lot to this guitar fraternity thank you for all your guitar creations
Hey Reeshi Gupta, are you an Indian with love for Paco and flamenco? I am a Gupta, too, and love that music; i got to know the Maestro a bit as an organizer...
Beautiful. Always one phrase ahead. Don't know how else to describe it. Such beautiful music that catches out your ears. Always ahead of the game. Beautiful and genius. I keep coming back to this video as it captivates me so much. Put simply. This makes me happy. This makes me smile. Music is love. Thank you Al Di Meola and thank you Paco de Lucia. In music you both live and your music will always live on.x
Best acoustic guitar duo of all time! Everytime I need inspiration to pick up my guitar and play I watch this. Simply the best!!!
7:21 to 7:31 Paco 😮
True Master.
Gloria bendita. Increible. Saludos desde España.
🤩
How wonderful to see human beings making wonderful music together. This is when we are at our best. Some of us have no talent and go into politics.
What an incredible guitarist!!!
Paco de Lucia, the greatest guitarist of all times by far. It’s a shame we don’t see great musicians like that out there anymore.
Rest in peace Paco, your music is art & it shall forever be remembered!!!
What a blessing Paco de Lucia's music is! Always thankful for it. Rest in peace, Paco 🎶
OMG, what else can you say?! Speechless and surrenders to the magnificence of these two guitar gods!
Hermosas interpretaciones ..!!!
May you Rest In Peace Maestro’
Siempre lo mejor!
Lucky Luke are you who i think you are? JP
JeanPaul Logiotatos
I’m just a Lonesome Cowboy 🤠
That’s cool. I have a mate in Los Angeles who goes by Lucky Luke. ✌️
JeanPaul Logiotatos
That’s cool man :)
The name is from a Belgian Cartoon called Lucky Luke, in which Lucky Luke is the main character, and he’s a lonesome cowboy lol. I grew up in Vietnam way back. There were some comic books remained even after the communist regime taken over in 1975. I used to read them when I was a kid, could barely remember anything but the name doesn’t fade. All the kids loved Lucky Luke. I was no exception. The good ol’e days....
PTSD
Yea, same venue for me but in Dallas.
two of the best guitarists. PACO AND DI MEOLA.
Wish that I could’ve seen this show. These two guys watching and supporting each other with wordless communication and challenging each other to go just a little farther. Amazing to see. So glad for RUclips having these moments on video.
Now THAT is the duel at the crossroads! Absolutely stunning!
Untouchable musicians
Magic....saw them together with John ml. at the Loreley
Best concert i ever saw !!
vaya papanatas crack
Gênios
Bueno vosotros tenéis a цой.
Yo no invento nada. Acabas de aprender algo... quizá.
