I have heard hundreds, but to me this is the PUREST version of Malaguena I have ever heard. Everything about it....the smokey cafe, the women...everything is so perfect!
First thing i got to learn on a spanish. It being my first too. José Feliciano's black&white with the fancy but thurough 1-Hand segment first version to see done Live. Has to me too, been Infinitely Untouchable. Then this guy showed up.. *one of those schmuck-moments where you actually scratch your head and briefly doubt your sanity in full compliance.
In my lifetime I have heard all the great Flamenco artists including the famous Carlos Montoya, all the members of the Romaros family and all the current popular Flamenco guitarists. Sabicas will always be my favorite. In his lifetime there was none better. The smoothness of delivery and the technical ability was and will forever be the very best. He played with magnificently trained fingers and with his heart. His music and style has been copied by all the greats today.

Paco DeLucia was probably the greatest guitar player ever and Sabicas was one of his mentors who encouraged him to go beyond the classical Flamenco style.
Sabicas is EASILY better than paco lol, I’ve seen Paco live before he died and believe me, sabicas made the guitar sound like something no one has heard before. There’s “playing the guitar” ya know toca la guitarra but Sabicas was one was the music . He had the song in him, plus the technical skill. Paco is a technician but you can’t place him with sabicas or Narciso yepes, specially if you know what theory and methods they introduced to guitarist as a whole. Learn classical guitar pedagogy first, then make assessments… if you don’t play, you can’t understand the music.

Paco was excellent in any aspect be it speed, technique, clean sound of every note, or the genius idea of composed music, he actually diversified the flamenco made it much richer, and many genres you hear today like tarantas, minera, bulerias etc are exist because of him. Yes Sabicas deserves any credit as well because he was the beginning, but it doesn't matter how was the start more important what happens at the finish. We once had a wooden wheel, now we defined it and made it a modern tire
In my opinion, one of the greatest flamenco guitarist's. With such spirit and passion exposed through the music, who can deny the true art this man provided.
This is without a doubt the best malagueña. Technically. Musically. Such a graceful guitar player. Sad that these legends aren’t alive still but the clock never stops ticking.
Mesmerising. If you didn't see it, you'd hardly believe it what you were hearing. Even seeing his playing is so fluid it's beyond belief. I don't like comparing individual players, but Sabicas' technique is something else entirely.
complete mastery. all class. greatest flamenco guitarist to ever live. yet he gets overshadowed by many others (cough paco cough). many have incredible talent and technique but no one will ever come close to the grace sabicas exuded when he touched a guitar.

Filmed rarely for the spanish TV. Sabicas is the Jimi Hendrix and then some of the flamenco guitar. One could argue that Paco de Lucía was better at technique, but given the opposition that Sabicas was given (operating from the Bronx, New York) he was very captivating, to say the least. He filled up a Madison Square Garden. I could listen to his Malagueña 24 hours a day.
Juan Espinosa I disagree that P d L was better at technique. He looks like he’s straining to play when he plays fast and Sabicas looks totally effortless and plays a lot smoother. Just my opinion.
True Flamenco by the great Master Sabicas. I love the story of him smashing his guitar onstage at Carnegie Hall when one of the male dancers came out stamping away during Sabicas' big solo. Anyone else have more details about that ? Such a legendary meltdown...from such a Maestro!
When I first heard Sabicas I was stunned into silence! I stopped playing my guitar for two years of just listening to Flamenco in general, trying to understand it. Pretty rad for a Led Zep fan!

Thanks to him, Paco branched out and formed a style of his own for a new generation, but not until later. Paco also discusses other great's who influenced him. Well worth watching a documentary on Paco. Nothing but respect for all those who came before him. Ground breakers since Paco,...hmmmm? Great players, but... innovators? We'll see... ?

Sabicas, sometime in the 1940s -50s?, adapted and arranged it in his own way, for the classical guitar.🐦

a true master never stops perfecting his craft . here i believe sabicas is around 60 years old . if you go see his other video " malaguena with 2 encores " he`s probably well into his 70`s and plays a much improved version of malaguena.

What I find interesting here is how soft and subtle some of Maestro Sabicas' techniques are. Totally different to the "rough" sound that you often here with flamenco guitar. I really enjoyed this video!
Its an "artificial harmonic", it is done by holding your index finger directly over the fret (barely touching the string) and using your thumb to pluck the string. Artificial harmonics are used to make harmonics other than the common 5th, 7th and 12th fret harmonics. Whatever note you are holding, simply pluck the fret 6 whole steps from the point of origin. Hope this helps!

Sabicas was the best pure flamenco guitarist, in my opinion. Now that he is gone, Paco Peño has done an incredible job of carrying on the tradition.
