  • 17 years into production and Nissan is just about ready to release the final refresh of the R35.
I borrowed the 2023 T-spec and took it for a drive down to Hakone to remind myself why this car was just so special.
But what will the future hold? Will the lineage continue? How will it all pan out?

I've said it before but the cinematography from this channel's really on another level. It's like a sophisticated "cars & coffee" vibe every time I watch. Love that.

The R35 has aged well. I remember being disappointed at its weight and size when it launched. As everything has got heavier, today it seems just fine.

Which is why I think it will become a collector car. The nose diving sales exactly mimics the end of R34’s sales back in 2002.

Very very good point at the end.
The GTR (Skyline) cars are now no longer accessible or affordable to the average person.
    Well, when new at least.
Its hard to see how Nissan can justify charging so much for the last of the line cars,
since they haven't exactly made huge leaps in either interior finish or technologies,
or even in performance terms over the last few years.
As you say, they now see themselves as Porsche 911 competitors, and can charge accordingly.
Whereas, when it launched in 2007, they could outperform the equivalent 997 Turbo but yet be
still realistically affordable for a reasonable price....no longer unfortunately.

I tend to agree with your comment that Nissan have sort of lost their connection to the GTR's "high performance for the every-man" philosophy with the more recent iterations. I became a Datsun/Nissan convert back in the 80's watching the Group C Turbo Bluebird in the Australian Touring Car Championship and then the R31 Skylines. You could connect with them because although the turbo models weren't sold here in Australia you could buy a Bluebird that looked the same and the N/A RB30 Skylines performed pretty good anyway. I later fell for my automotive true love, the Datsun 510, for the same reason. An every-mans car but on a level above the other stuff that was in the market at the time.
I hope Nissan doesn't lose that base philosophy in the process of trying to compete too hard with Porsches, Ferraris and McLarens.

I think it’s good that the GTR has lasted as long as it has. The long term parts availability will be a good thing. I think Nissan dropped the ball hard by not competing with Toyota in the gt86 market back in 2013.. a new Silvia would have been amazing if it did the same path with Toyota gt86/gr86. There are so many S Chassis fans wanting a new version…no idea how they didn’t see it..

    • @dino_dc
      @dino_dc  Месяц назад +1

Yep they screwed up BIG by not going ahead with the IDX. They let Toyota take the entire market segment. Now they have turned owning an R32/33/34 somethig only the rich can afford to do with limited parts availability and upping prices continuously. In contrast owning an air cooled 911 is far easier

I feel as though Nissan lost their way with the GTR as well. The idea at the beginning was that it was basically the Japanese version of the Corvette. What I mean by that, is that it offered the performance of a supercar while being considerably cheaper. When they first came out with the R 35 that’s what it provided but when they made it over $100,000 they really lost a lot of that. It still had the performance but at that price why not just get the Porsche.

At least the 2007 to 2012 models should've been offering manual transmission. To be a "worthy successor to R34". Such a shame many of us will never get to drive one, because what money we can save will go to BMW or Porsche with a manual.

  • @mattcook3801

So, I heard about 5-6 years ago about a company negotiating with Nissan over providing lithium for batteries for the R36 GTR, and it would be an EV.
They’ve been working on the R36 for atleast 6 years already, it will be a full EV, I’m willing to put money on it.
Which is very sad I think. It’ll be an overpriced EV barge and I think it will fail, spectacularly.

The Nismo performance jump also did not justify the price point. The route I took was a used DBA, and that Mizuno-san car was my blank canvas.

Regardless it’s still a fantastic car. This year Nissan has rolled out a lot of stunning designs! I’m really hoping they’ve gotten over this hump of making the ugliest cars on the road since 2003.
