  • Part 1 of my tutorial on building an N Scale Signal Kit by Showcase Miniatures. Follow along in this introduction as I describe the contents of this kit.
In Part 2 I will start my build of a single head block signal, showing you how I assemble and paint the kit.

The Showcase Miniatures signals are far superior to the photoetched signal heads that BLMA were producing in N scale...(Although I miss their photoetched signal bridges!) Their original design made use of fiber optics, threaded from the signal head and down through the mast, to light the signal head. This design was tweaked (to the one in this video) to allow the use of mini LEDs mounted in the signal head itself. In addition to this signal design, Showcase Miniatures produces a 'C&O' type signal with platform ladder access. The Century Foundry line of trackside details is fantastic. We LOVE Walter and Debbie at Showcase Miniatures!

Nice video Peter, looking forward to the next video in the series. I’ve been contemplating buying some of these signals for my layout but now I’ll wait to see the build series first. I wish there were more N scale signals available - specifically modern signals and pre-assembled ones. Thanks for sharing. - Steve

Rochelle Intermodal Yep, I was hoping for BLMA to do the signal masts in N scale too. Such a shame they didn’t. Thanks again for doing the series on these. - Steve

I’ve seen some on shapeways and thought about trying some down the road. I’m sure as 3D printing continues to take off we’ll see more options down the road 🤞- Steve

You just lost me when you opened the case. I cannot deal with all those parts. I am not skilled and my vision is no longer going to allow me to work with all of this small equipment. I just wish someone would make a good “N” scale signal that looks authentic like the BMLA HO signals. I waited for years for BMLA to give us the promised an scale signals and Craig sold his business to Atlas and they never produced anything other than those awful G type signals.

Frank, sorry you feel this way. But yes, I do agree about the signals. There are plenty in HO scale. However, I talked to Craig about this and he said the problem was getting the fine detail they wanted in such a small scale. He was not prepared to release a less-detailed signal and compromise his promise of highly-detailed products. Sunrise produced some really nice signals, but since they went out of business they are hard to get hold of These Showcase Miniatures signals are the best on the market at the moment. Ok, you have to build them, but it is not hard and the result you get is a very nicely detailed and prototypical signal. But unfortunately at the moment there is no company coming out with a decent ready-built detailed N scale signal. Hopefully there will be some soon.

To many small parts. Sorry to say.
