- Sony has had the longest career of any major Brand in the world of e-Paper. They were the first ones to have major success with an e-reader and pioneered e-notes, with their Digital Paper. The entire e-paper industry owes a lot to Sony.
Please enjoy this historical look-back of the Sony Reader & Digital Paper system.

It makes me really sad that the e-reader market hasn't reached Brazil, we only have here the Kindle and people don't have any idea about the existence of devices such as Sony DPT, Kobo, Boyue, Hanvon, Bigme, etc... I wish the market here was better for this, but, I believe in a few years we will have all these devices in our daily lives!
@@SilvioBritto Nossa sim, falou tudo!!!!
Same here in india
Feeling that pain in India as well!
Sony ereaders are my favorite! I'm so glad to see a documentary on them! I have a pink prs-300.
My PRS-505 continues to work perfectly although the charger has been replaced and the battery life is very limited.
Thanks for this wonderful documentary!
I gave my PRS-505 away years ago, however, my brand new sealed PRS-350 just arrived this past week and embarrassingly, I purchased it for $30. My God it's a bloody gorgeous unit. I have a Kobo Clare 2e that's great for nighttime reading but there's just something about this Sony that is truly special. BTW they still sell battery replacements for your PRS-505.
So much nostalgia. The very best e-readers! I had about three of them. So much better hardware, interface and features than the rest. The kindles are basically a shop in comparison.
What an amazing documentary
That is documentary level. Well done, Peter. Sony really has a solid history in the e-reader market. Personally, when i saw the DPT I thought that's it. This is the future. It will make paper obsolete in most schools, colleges and offices. Unfortunately it was too expensive but I have been following the evolution of this market since than and I am very excited. Every gadget is getting closer to the paper experience.
So well-done! This felt like I was watching a Netflix-quality documentary - the narration, visuals, and music were all top-notch. Thanks, Peter!
This was an incredibly long process for us
As we are quite busy, this actually took 3 months to produce
We had a few employees do research, unemploy do scripting, and then of course Peter does voiceover and then it needs to be edited
We're very happy you enjoyed it. We are going to try to do more of these as soon as we can.
@@goodereader Thank for commenting on the process. Amazing job by the whole team!
I totally agree! It would be great to have more documentaries like this in the future!
really high-quality content, thanks!
Great content, thanks for this documentary!
Bought a second-hand Sony PRS-350 for 30€ and it still works today! The only problem is the battery that died a few days ago, but it's easily replaceable. Great machine!
My first eReader was a PRS-505. I still have it somewhere. It didn't stop working it was just replaced by faster models.
I still have the PRS-500 lol.
Mine's on display in its docking stand on a shelf just outside my office.
Mine was the prs-300. I won it at a contest but it stopped working after a couple weeks 😞
@@NatChArrant I have the dock also.
@@Dinaplakida I'm sorry to hear that. the 350 was much better.
I ordered three used t-3s in all colors a year ago, love them!! Might order a few more just in case.. price 150-200 eur. Love sony readers. My first reader was 950, broke the screen on vacation, bought t3, also loved it, but broke in luggage during travels. Bought a kobo aura, hated it. Now got 3 sonys..
Try out pocketbooks, even used touch hd. I have started collecting Sony prs, but they are too slow to use with bigger epubs.
This was great! I love learning about the history and evolution of this tech.
When it was released, the PRS500 did not handle EPUB or adobe DRM nor did it reflow PDFs, but it did take SD cards, in addition to Memory Sticks. Support for EPUB, adobe and PDF reflow came with later updates. If I'm not mistaken EPUB wasn't even released until after the PRS505 was released, and EPUB support was in the very last firmware update for the PRS500 around the time Sony closed their ebook store.
Otherwise, really cool retrospective!
Still using my Quirklogic Papyr…love it!
Very well done vid.
Excellent narration
Amazing documental
Great video. Ereaders might just be another piece of technology, but with the amount of time I spend using mine, and the convenience it gives me, my ereader has always been very special to me.
I bought my first reader in university, a PRS-T1. I loved it and still remember it fondly. I used it as an mp3 player and even annotated PDFs on it. It was stolen a few years later and all I could afford was an entry level Kindle, it was a massive downgrade in every way.
Thanks for an interesting video.
I miss song ereaders so bad 😭
I realy like my DPTR1 even if, to be honest, this product is poorly finished and self desasembling (I am constantly put the plastic case in position, and that’s a current problem ).
Here in France people often ask me what is the device and where I have put my hands on (bought on taobao in China) .
you did forgot the DPT-RP1 new 3rd gen with color display! I'm waiting for the release for more than a year now don't know I could ever get my hands on it :(
We didn't forget it. It never came out. Sony never moved on it, fujitsu did.
:(
can u make other manucfactures history? nice video.
This video, believe It or not took 3 months to make.
While we are quite busy, we had to chip away at this off and on since june. Thank you very much for your support.
Surely one of these companies will try adding a camera to these devices. It would allow you to take a screenshot and mark it up.
We did, two actually. :)
@@goodereader Are they still available?
@@bradd5961 yes, our device just came out last month and is shipping next month. It has two cameras on it with a Wacom note-taking layer.
I’d like to know why they left the market. They always had premium hardware.
It more or less came down to the market not being profitable _enough_ for them. A big company like that isn't interested in marginal profits, and Kindle was playing the 800 lb gorilla in the space. Personally, I too really liked the Sony Reader line, and I would have stuck with them if it had been a viable option.
Agreed. The Sony devices had a premium feel you just don't get now.
I still have my PRS 350 but I am honestly too lazy to sideload content. Kindle and kobo make it so easy that anything else isn't worth the hassle. I have a few books on my 350 that I haven't read yet so when I go away I do take that device.
i wish they rebrand their e-reader line into something like Walkman, premium stuff.
@@cortneybowman7297 Do you use Calibre? I have a plugin that lets me 'convert' my Kindle purchases to read on my Kobo.
this is just a huge commercial for sony. so disappointed. No history whatsoever, only a lengthy spec enumeration of all models no one cares about
