THINKING OF STARTING VANLIFE IN THE UK? HERE'S THE HARD TRUTH.

  • Vanlife: it's not all pretty park ups, adventure, exploration and travel. Quite often it's a hard life, full of challenges where many sacrifices need to be made. And in a small campervan like ours especially, this can sometimes take its toll, even more so when there's two of you. In this video, we show some of the more day to day aspects of van living, but also the mental health side, and the struggles we can face. It's not intended to be a negative video - but a necessary showcase of the more difficult side of this lifestyle. Do we still love this life? Absolutely! But it's not easy, and you will have bad times and face challenges as often as the good. Which is just life anyway, right?!
    #vanlife #thetruth #travel
    Ultimately this video came about because we were "in between" travels so started filming some of the mundane day-to-day tasks whilst sharing our thoughts on the experience. And for me (Dan), I certainly hit more of a block with this life than I had previously. Stephen much less so, but we both agreed we miss a base of sorts, so maybe that can be a future plan. It's a bit longer than usual because there's more chatter in this one, but hopefully you guys can make it to the end! And even among this, we still find time to go out exploring, walking in a Kent woodland to go mushroom hunting (which doesn't quite go to plan).

    Hi all, a bit of a different one this week but not intending to be off-putting - we were between work and travels and just ended up filming some of the more mundane things which also coincided with feeling a bit of vanlife fatigue, so it sort of became about that. We'd still recommend trying this life to anyone, but there's no way a sense of joy and being "up there" can be sustained- you'll have low moments throughout which this kind of shows. We've always said it's not forever, but we're not ready to give up the ghost yet - but perhaps working towards having a base again might be the next step. So hopefully not too depressing or dragged out, but if you do manage to make it through the vlog, well done 👍😂 Thanks for watching and all your support as always. Dan & Stephen x ❤

    If using the trick of putting a matchstick or something into a screw hole then put the sealant in first. ALWAYS use stainless steel or brass screws ( non rusting). If sealing around windows firstly clean the area with isopropyl alcohol then wipe dry. Then use masking tape so after you have applied the sealant and smoothed off with a wet finger ( to get a smooth finish ) you then peel off the masking tape so any excess is immediately removed and you have a neat finish

      Haha can't disagree with that! We don't mind the launderette if it's easy to find and park next to, but that's rarely the case, and those revolution laundry places tend to be more miss than hit!

    Thank you for sharing your thoughts & being so honest.
    Living in the van is the complete opposite of a house, you have to be so organised to cope with the smaller space available & it's understandable getting frustrated with it.
    The enormous costs of running even a small house far outweigh those of the van but also provide the comforts most of us are fortunate enough to have & be used to & that's the biggest challenge for you.
    Try to get the lighting sorted (maybe at a caravan centre?) by someone qualified, meantime led lighting on a long bendy strip rather than fairy lights perhaps?
    Running debugs your frustration & is somewhere for all the bad chemicals being released in your body when you're stressed to go.
    Fingers crossed for feeling better soon🤞.
    Look forward to your next video.
    🤗💐❤

    • @comealongdear

      Thank you for such a perfect - and ridiculously accurate! - summing up of that video 😍 It's the ultimate trade off - cheaper living, when it goes to plan and more freedom vs hot showers, space and all that stuff.
      I'm surprised it's bothering us more now, but that's inevitably some level of burnout and the shine coming off. You have to ride those things out, to a degree. I think for me (Dan) it's also the domino effect of one bad thing causing the brain to spiral downwards, but that's also something I have to come to terms with and was always the case even in a house.
      We've got the van booked in soon to have things looked at, so 🤞 we'll have everything working again.
      Running is therapy, it's just the best thing mentally for those reasons you said ❤️
      Thank you for the lovely response, next video is a bit more positive too I think 😍

      @@comealongdear Well done getting the van booked in, it'll be great afterwards.
      Good to use campsites sometimes & make the most of their facilities, pity there aren't more open off season, really they're missing a trick as they could charge less over winter & have a reduced but steady source of income as there are so many vanlifers & others who'd use them if they were open.
      Thank you for your lovely reply, keep warm & don't let the rainy stuff get you down.

We had periods where we didn't use the sink and just filled up bottles and managed OK.

    10:08 take the screwa out of that awning track & see what state they're in, they're quite likely to have rusted away & if so you've found a leak. Replace them with stainless steel ones & lots of Sikaflex in the holes. You may also have a leak round the window - take it out, clean it where it touches the roof & put it back with yet more Sikaflex.

    We are so looking forward to full time travel but I'm sure we will get the same feelings at times too.
    We don't want to be working 9 to 5 paying bills for the rest of our work life.

      Aww thank you guys ❤️ You're right of course and it is how we think overall - a "normal" home life has just as many ups and downs, and you end up in a mindless routine every day to live that life - so we are still so glad we've done it, and as you say, all those memories and adventures. But it's definitely a life of two extremes sometimes 😂
      A bigger van is something we've considered but we do still like ours and there are some benefits to the smaller van,especially when you're in the UK. But not fully ruling it out!
      Cheers guys, you both know how this goes, I think you'll love it full time, and being aware of the down sides already is half the battle ❤️ Looking forward to seeing where it takes you!

      Hi Chrissy, oh god I said to Steve someone would say that, he said "no they won't" 😆 I can say for sure they're not mice droppings though, because they are pumpkin seeds (and various other seeds) that fell on the floor the previous few weeks 😳
      I nearly didn't include that bit it was so rancid, but in fairness to us, it was after we'd finished a stint at work - when we do this the bed is up for 2-3 weeks continuously so we can't clean the floor very well, but in that whole time we're still using the kitchen area. So it gets filthy so quickly.
      Appreciate the concern though, our ears and eyes are always alert for rodents (touch wood, nothing so far).
      And thank you for the lovely words ❤️ You're absolutely right a house will be extortionate to run, I think we'd be in for a shock going back. Enjoying the freedom for now and will see where life takes us 🤗

Either a practical van usefull skill/new language/or work based skill or something entirely different...good that you are self aware n went f a run knowing that suits yourself as a 'pick me up'....hope I'm not "teaching you t suck eggs" so to speak...will definitely be watching more of your films....spring is just around the corner....looking forward t watching more of your adventures!

      Aww what a lovely bit of feedback, thank you for this, you're definitely not teaching us to suck eggs at all, those are all great ideas that we should look into. We did try learning Spanish but it fell by the wayside...probably something to come back to. Stephen does very much enjoy his drawing however so we do have that and I (Dan) have taken to it too. I enjoy reading and occasionally writing too, and of course we'll watch films etc together. Plenty to keep us busy but the ones you've suggested are great productive ideas, appreciate it 👍 ❤

    it's alright to have a moan mate, we're British
    But never forget why you did this, its the journey.
    What I found was problems turn into simple solutions, it's all a learning process.

    • @comealongdear
      @comealongdear  8 месяцев назад

      Thank you, that's a really helpful way of looking at things. Sometimes just a bit of patience and you're right, solutions will come along if you persevere. And they have in many ways. We always come back to the WHYs of doing this and it always makes us realise we still did the right thing, however long it lasts.
      But mainly you're right that yes, we're British so it's absolutely in our make up to bitch and moan 😆 Which will undoubtedly continue to the bitter end 🤣

    Unfortunately, the complete dislocation of expectation, the realisation of taking much in life for granted which is only understood when finding yourself in a situation is due to ignorance and arrogance before hand. The complete lack of understanding that freedoms requires a sacrifice to gain or keep, is common place by many in the UK and the Western World. Instead of complaining, just be thankful you are still alive every new day, as many will not have the luxury or waking-up alive the next day. This video evidences all of the written statements above.

    • @comealongdear
      @comealongdear  6 месяцев назад

      In fairness, this is simply meant to be a video that, apart from documenting our travels and life in a van, shows what you can miss from a "regular" home and how sometimes it's much harder than being in bricks and mortar. That's all. People will moan about mundane things every day. We were hardly moaning about life in general, but the challenges the switch in lifestyle can bring. As westerners we might well all be spoiled and I don't disagree with your wider point. But we are humans and will still find upset and discontent in our lives. It doesn't mean we're not grateful for everything we have - I believe I even point that out in the video. And you know, it's really just about two people living in a tiny space with limited facilities and how that can take its toll compared to a normal home. I don't think that makes us terrible people to point that out or feel that way sometimes, and it doesn't mean we're not thankful for all we have compared to so many others.

    • @comealongdear
      @comealongdear  8 месяцев назад

      I think tat is a pretty accurate word to describe most of it - something you notice even more in a van! I love Christmas (Stephen much less so surprise surprise 😂), decorations etc, but it does feel like people buy cheap throwaway crap for it rather than holding onto them for years. Halloween is even worse. It's just overkill but we've known this for decades. And we've been guilty of it ourselves, sadly - but who hasn't. It does feel like perceptions on all this tat is slowly changing though.
      Making up for it now by having sod all in the van 😂

    After a flash conveyance we had to move out in June and live in our MH......It was Summer. We stayed on Sites with Electric points and Shower blocks but as Summer turned to Autumn and it got colder (Also having to move on every 2 weeks because of site restrictions )reality set in. It was NOT cheap and we (Thank the God of Geriatrics) rented an apartment just as covid hit and all the sites were shutting down......How you lads wild camp virtually continually and keep positive I do not know. We were 20 years case hardened motor homers and I would have had a hissy fit and spat my dummy out at the first haw frost.

    • @comealongdear
      @comealongdear  Месяц назад +1

      Hello 🤗 Sounds like you had quite the experience and did the right thing at the right time there! Winter is a whole other ball game and yes factoring in not being on sites and it ends up, well...interesting shall we say 😂😬 As you say, it isn't cheap either, though since covid I feel rent/mortgages have risen so much that some campsites would be a cheaper alternative depending on where you stay. Hope you're both happy where you are now? For us, it's very unlikely we'll do this for the rest of our lives, and we've always said we'd love a base (while keeping the van) so maybe one day it'll progress to that if we can ever find a way to do so. Who knows at this point, so we're just trying to enjoy the good sides while we can right now 😃

    paintball gun. that's what i would be using, totally legal, non lethal, can get gas balls, paintballs, allsorts of protection. Shame to have to be thinking about protection yourself with what's going on in the world now a day. BB guns, use air capsules, fully legal can be used for plinking or target practice or even ratting around the van at night, follow the rules and it is all legal.. Night vision cctv 12v cameras. Very cheap, aliexpress do a cheap camera system for less than £100.00 then if there is damage or a personal attaCK, at least you have something for the police, Only for them to turn and say, they no officers in the area and will take up to 40 minutes to reach you. Also you can adopt a add on car reverse sensors system, instead of fitting all the sensors on the rear bumper, place them around the van, when switched on, if anybody around the van it will give you a tone. Just as if your backing up and the tone on the sensor changes with the measurement , so same thing will happen when someone walking around the van. . Maybe start a database of incidents with video evidence with all the other vanlife people. Make a webpage for the reporting of such things. Gather your own evidence, must be some ex solicitors in the van life, or ex police officers who are in the van life.

      Thanks for the suggestions, we're generally comfortable with our own safety, probably because there's 2 of us, but you really never know doing this life (or any life) so can't hurt to be more careful. I like the idea about the sensors around the van. Not so sure either of us should be trusted with anything that shoots mind you, legal or otherwise 🤣

      I'm sorry but you clearly haven't watched our other videos then? This is literally one video, where we talk about how it can be more difficult in a van sometimes, which is perfectly reasonable. We work, we travel, and we largely enjoy our life but any pretence that anything is 100% perfect is rubbish, and I think it's important to show all sides, especially to people who might be considering this life. If you want to see many of the good things "vanlife" does bring, I'm sure lots of our other videos manage to showcase that 🙂

      @@comealongdear That video that I just watched came up on my video feed for some reason, and I can assure you now that I’ve been doing van life for nearly 8 years and I can honestly honestly say as true as I sit here now typing this message I cannot find one bad thing about Van life, not one single thing, yes I may be wired different and yes I chose to do this life because I wanted to do it I’m not being forced to do it but there are many other people like me who enjoy this and embrace it to its full extent but let me just tell you again I cannot find one thing wrong with this Van life, but as everything in life it is each to their own and yes I’ve not watched all your videos but first impressions count

      It's wonderful that you see no bad sides at all, it's obviously the perfect thing for you. For us, we chose to do this life and we don't regret it one bit, it's the best thing we did - it's just that life has good and bad points and it's normal for life to challenge us and occasionally have downs as well as up. We are grateful at how much we've got to see living in a van, it's created so many experiences and memories. For some reason this video keeps popping up however, when it's just one of many we've done, we document so many fun things we see and do, even if we do like a good moan along the way.
