Great video! For someone like me who is just researching into RV / Motorhome life style having never done it before this was really helpful. I have a couple of questions for you, 1) Why did you choose a motorhome over a traditional static caravan? 2) When you park up, how do you get to your place of work?
I was long considering moterhome or boat due to the rising living expenses in a house, in the end I chose the boat as the cheapest and the scenery and peace on the waterways is immense. I just brought my 1st, works out to £800 a year to be on the river +20 a month for diesel, food all depends on you and safety check is every four years. I'd reccomend to anyone boating life or motor home, get yourselfs a cheaper life, it's there for the taking! Edit: if your constantly on the move travelling then it will be alot less than £800 as I included permanent mooring cost there. Youd just be paying river license for your boat to be on the waterways, that costs me £20 a month.
It’s a lot more than a motorhome . Anything with boat in it is expensive. You cannot get mooring cheap now. Also boat needs blacking and taking out of water. Repairs are often . Service the engine and breakdown service , the list goes on. BOAT .. BREAK OUT ANOTHER THOUSAND.
@@rockinginafreeworld3256 anyway I'm giving my own insight/opinion. It's a reccomendation for people to get out of houses and minus their living expenses. I'd love to see your comparison, more information based on the point you have given, from the obvious experience you must have had. It's always welcome so other people can read and it can help them decide.
I'm in the same predicament. A narrowboat seems like a better option - can constant cruise without hassle, and even have a washing machine on the boat.
@@lgx2410 absolutely, narrowboats are the dream. Mooring places also offer necessary facilities such as wash and shower rooms if your boat lacks such, say if you go for something cheaper like a cruiser.
Iv lived in buses and vans on and off for donkeys years I'm also a freegan for 40 years this is a very chilled cheap style off life! I also teach foraging!😂🏴☠️👍
My place is probably close to £2k a month all in, if I was single I'd definitely consider van life to save money and to have some fun doing it. No idea why RUclips recommended this video or really why I watched it, but I did :)) Nice video mate!
good luck, at least you will be used to drastic downsizing when you go back to living in a property and realise you can no longer afford to buy what you had as you get older and realise it impractical after a "certain" age.
I wish you well lea31. I left the US to live in a van in Germany and haven't regretted the decision. Live your life and be happy, ignore the nay-sayers. 😊🚚
I BEEN LIVING IN A OLD RV FOR YEARS, LOVE THE LIFE STYLE, I LOST EVERYTHING AND I DO MEAN EVERYTHING A FEW YEARS AGO AND I WAS BROKEN IN MANY DIFFERENT WAYS..... I BOUGHT THIS 35YR OLD RV, IT ONLY HAD 45000 MILES ON IT AND WAS IN GREAT SHAPE, IM 65YRS OLD AND LIKE I SAID IM A BROKEN MAN, I LIVE ON SS AND I GET ABOUT $1000 A MONTH, IT COST ME AROUND 4 TO 5 HUNDRED A MONTH TO LIVE, I PUT MONEY A SIDE FOR REPAIRS AND IM TRYING TO SAVE ENOUGH TO GET A DIFFERENT RIG MAYBE SOMETHING A LITTLE BETTER ON GAS.... YES I LOVE LIVING IN THE RV AND WILL NEVER GO BACK TO A HOUSE OR APT, I DO HAVE 6 KIDS THEIR ALL GROWN UP AND HAVE KIDS OF THEIR OWN....... I CHOOSE TO LIVE IN MY RV TO STAY INDEPENDENT AND NOT TO BOTHER OR INTERFERE WITH MY KIDS LIVES..... I ABSOLUTELY RECOMMEND THIS LIFE TO ANYONE, I LOVE THE LIFE STYLE AND ITS A CHEAPER WAY OF LIVING, I JUST CANT JUSTIFY $3000 A MONTH FOR RENT AND UTILITIES......
Where abouts..in USA I take it. Somewhere warm I hope. Sounds a great life, all the better if weather favourable.. More open roads there or Canada or Auss. than UK. Similar age, Like many, pipedream that kind of set up but need the push.
I am about to retire. Grown kids . Bored stiff. Seriously thinking of buying a motorhome. Head South in the winter and go north in the summer. Vanlife is appealing to me as I have friends in most European country's. Living alone I am used to after loosing my wife.
Saving for your emergency lump is best done in a credit union in my opinion. Especially for newbies As you can borrow up to six times your savings in a real emergency if you do not have enough in your emergency fund. With really low interest offset by your interest on your savings which also you still add to whilst repaing the loan. Also the savings are locked in as security till the loan is repaid.
It's an honest breakdown of costs going back to the 90's when my husband and enjoyed our camper the costs are very much in touch. With out the luxury of showers lol
It would cost that to rent a house each month (rent depending on location and size if property) and you would have house associated bills on top and still have to food shop, pay for fuel, tax, service, etc etc so it is definitely cheaper to live the urban van life 🤪. Thanks for sharing the costs 👍🏻
I pay £500 a month for a 1 bed flat in Scotland - inc bills. Most campervanners probably do not park up on the street as they want to enjoy sitting outside on a nice day having breakfast with their fold up table and site facilities toilets showers etc. He is also not seeing the countryside when he wakes up but just urban dwellings. So you need to add £500 a month in site fees to his figure to make it relevant to those who stay on sites - making it as expensive as keeping a house. He still spends a lot frankly even with no site fees - I spend less than he does as I do not waste money on gym clubs amazon prime etc and I have a phone contract at £20 a month that gives me unlimited data.
Have you considered having your phone & internet contracts on seperate networks? You'd probably still have coverage on the other network if you were out of EE coverage.
The biggest question I always had was : what about the address ? A postcode ? I consider living in a motorhome or a converted van but my biggest fear is not owning an address
I go fishing on the cliffs sea coast and catch enough fish to last two weeks, which takes a few hours. I find garlic, onions in nature and I get some eggs from local farms. Rain water collection on roof is free. Add in minerals and I'm good! I also set up rabbit traps for proper red meat. Mostly all £0.
Love your videos dazza wouldn’t mind shaking ur hand if you ever come to Leicester, your living the right way what I’d give to do what you’re doing and not pay the council a single penny! Keep up the content loving it brother! X
Just found you, great guy to watch, love your sense of humour, we have a camper and live near Alicante in Spain, have lived here 20 years, owned camper since 2011.
Unfortunately people don't realize that RVs and caravans are a depreciating asset. They also need maintenance to keep them viable. Which means you take your whole home to a garage to service and fix. They don't last forever. They are too cramped for most people to enjoy - even the massive ones. I think people like the romanticism of living in a camper, the reality is it is not for most people. While I understand the UK is far too expensive for housing and wages are far too low, living in an RV is a BIG life decision and should not be taken lightly.
Good information, I drive a Peugeot Boxer Van 333 conversion which I use for work which has most things in, if I lived on my own with out the dogs and hubby. I would quiet haply live in my van , not to save cost its because I love it 😀
Yeah pretty much bang on. The proportions are totally different coz I'm totally rural but basically a couple of hundred a week let's me live a good( which means slightly self indulgent) life. I'd only add that if you can find a way to live with others of a similar inclination/lifestyle you provide a lot of each others entertainment and a lot of expenses are hugely reduced by being shared. Living communally with other gridless I reckon half that.
Hi Darren, always enjoy your content. Looking forward to the day I see you get your next motorhome upgrade. Hoping to start my vanlife journey in the future and look forward to bumping into you one day for a chat. Great vlog as always.
Biggest difference for me is vehicle costs. I know you approximated service cost and keep a fund for other vehicle costs but mine averages out at over £40 / month if I include tyres, exhaust, brakes, batteries, general wear & tear consumables. Food costs for me approx. £220 / month. Memberships like c&mh club, national trust (free parking), cycling UK (insures me on my bike), etc add up to another £16 - 20 / month. Clothing, toiletries, footwear, etc probably a further £30 / month if I'm honest with myself. They're probably the only extras l can think of over your list. Thanks for putting it out there 👍
And that's the thing isn't it, everyone will have slightly different costs and needs but that's the beauty of it, we can live this life and tailor it to what we want and need. Cheers for watching mate 👍🏻
@@TheUrbanMotorhome So you know instead of paying for a phone contract which once you work out the monthly payments you are paying double at least for the device once it ends I would recommend just keeping the phone you have and getting a Three sim only and just pay 23 a month where you also get unlimited internet, calls and messages and its good enough to share as a hotspot and stream on two devices if you really want to keep up with the latest phones then good old fashioned saving and buying outright is way cheaper (its also not restricted on maximum usage so you dont get slowed down I've used over 400gb in a month once legal torrents, downloading, streaming etc) sorry i know it sounds like an advert but I just prefer not to see people being ripped off buying stuff forgotten to say you can keep your number you have now by asking for the PAC code (port authorisation code) which generally only valid for 24hours I cant remember if it is better to get the new sim first or get the pac code first though ask three what they think is best way doing if you are going for it.
@@monkstandinglast I'm glad that Three works for you. 😎 I've been with three for 15 years and currently I'm stuck on a contract and I wouldn't recommend them to a soul. Wow, allot less than I thought. Just bought a LWB Ducato and was wondering how much over my 1200 euro a month of rental income I would be spending, so this video is a good starting point as I was looking at doing something similar to yourself with the gym etc. so thanks for the video.
Just found your channel and I am enjoying watching your content. I am in my van every weekend camping urban like yourself. It is a work van but for the weekends the racking converts into a bed etc. Anyway, if people think that any of this is expensive then just remember that some of those things you have to pay for anyway e.g phone costs and all the tax, insurance to get to work etc. The most important cost here is the one that is zero and that is rent.
Great video, I love the lifestyle :) I like to travel with a pedal bike in the back. I find it nice being able to park up and then just using the pedal bike for short commutes. Saves on fuel and engine wear, and free fitness too :)
I do all my own servicing, with parts and consumables at trade prices, and I could barely do "all" fluids for 150 without adding in labour at whatever that may cost these days even at back street under the arches garages! Given that motor oil alone can be horrendously expensive for something half-decent, I think you should be looking at least double that a year, especially when you consider the less regular jobs like brake fluid replacement, cam belts, clutches, coolant, and the likethat can be spread over a few years. Don't pay for a full service and an MOT. An awful lot of what is listed as "inspect & report" in a good service is actually part of an MOT anyway, so no need to pay twice.
Just found your channel via RUclips recommendations. I like the freedom and Nomadic lifestyle as i suffer from a bit of anxiety. I'm subscribing to your channel and looking forward to watching your past and forthcoming Vlogs
Great video. You're actually spending about the same as me in a (paid for) three bedroom house including running a car. Used to have a camper so I know the freedom that brings.
Tip on your sims: Have a contract with 2 seperate networks so if one goes down you have a reserve e.g. three and O2. I just have a spare sim that I activate if my main network fails.
Interesting video. My husband and I have been living full time in our motorhome for the past 2 years and are absolutely loving it! Our comparative cost is around and about the same as yours, except for insurance. How do you manage to keep your insurance so low being a full timer?? Since we went full time (and declared it as such to our insurance company) our cost went up from about £300-odd per year to £1450 a year! And there aren't many insurance companies offering full time insurance either, so shopping around is almost impossible! Please tell us which insurance company you use so we can look into switching. Loving your videos, btw. Kins regards Monica May
... unless of course you're a vlogger announcing to all the world that you're a full-timer! Insurance is just about the only thing in UK that requires a home address; for most this will be family or friends although this can carry its own problems if you're carrying debts.
@@psling7714 Baliffs are soulless assholes. They have no issue banging on a c/o address. CAB can help somewhat with that. DWP will pursue your estate or family in the event of your death if you are repaying benefit debt. In my years as a family support worker, I have researched debts and blacklists although I'm no expert. It's actually a commonly held myth that a whole address and it's occupants can be blacklisted by one resident having debts. This came from CAB - there is no such blacklist! I was totally surprised and believed this for years. If I think about it, how do rich people go bankrupt and instantly reboot their business under their wife's name without consequence? Depending on which credit check agency a debtor uses, you can be either squeaky clean or that late CC payment a few years back will kick your ass.
I'm just purchasing a motorhome, looking at a knaus, your numbers do seem high but a few things off I reckon £550 month will do, gym, entertainment and phone cost is straight off for me, you live good even in a motorhome, hopefully mine will work out too, good luck no doubt I will see you one day.
Seems a lot to live in a van, but considering you spend almost 50% of your budget on petrol, it’s not really. Obviously living in a van doesn’t mean you have to spend £330 per month on petrol. I barely spent £100 per month on petrol for the two years I lived in a motor home.
I was looking at a narrowboat, but during the scamdemic, the prices shot up as foreign holidays were out, so people looking for cheaper holidays or even a house move to save cash were grabbing narrowboats. The prices went crazy. Next year should see the prices drop as the novelty wears off.
In most cases a car would be needed if you lived in a house, so you don't really need to count most vehicle expenses as an "extra" when living on the road. In my 5 years as a gypsy, I found it much cheaper on the road compared to the next 5 years in a house---rates insurance, and MORE miles clocked up then when "travelling". Main reason for this was that I did not have to go to and from the shops---I shopped when I got there.
£752 all in that's awsome! My rent alone is £248 more than your total outgoings 😱... I could be about 1.5 to 2 grand a month better off if I bin the house and live in a van!
@@anthonymichaeldurkin6244 I am very soon but stuck at the moment as I'm paying out so much I can't even afford a van... so I will probably be starting out sleeping in my car for a couple months 😂

We own a motorhome but don't live in it. but ive worked out before i put a drop of fuel in or turn a wheel its costing roughly £820 a year tax mot service insurance..bit of a kicker. Darren watched and subbed from video one and i like your videos mate... but come on bud Gym...
In the UK it’s difficult to ‘free park’ without somebody asking you to move on. In france where i live you can virtually park anywhere without worrying about being moved on. With solar panels i can virtually live off grid and no need to find campsites etc.
Thanks Darren for the break downs. Please use Cash as much as possible! (post office will give cash/cashpoints.) Easier to budget plus we got to fight the digital tyranny thats coming. (15 minute cities) They can stop you moving around by simply stopping your card/payment. Thats the end of your nomadic freedom. Example : Canada.
been thinking about it for a while... but its a lot of money to buy a camper, and it won't necessarily hold it value after 2030... i personally think diesel is going to hammered in an even bigger way from 2030... and if you run out of wifi data(or want to save money), you can always hotspot off your phone(i do this when i'm parked up at services waiting for a call, i watch netflix on my tablet, hotspot off my phone... phone hotspot is ok to stream with, but i wouldn't trust it to xbox game or anything like that)....
People buy cars that lose a third of their value as they drive off the forecourt. Computers and phones are obsolete in 6months. Sorry, I sound like I'm being a dick. You can wait for prices to improve, but how much might you miss? It's definitely a consideration. It's honestly about taking the risk that it will be a life-changing experience... or something you end up hating. Who knows, you might LOVE it. Rent a camper or panel van? Try it for size?
Really interesting and realistic for your needs, like you say you are living how you want to so it could be cheaper or more expensive but great thorough breakdown so people can judge for themselves how it would differ 👍 thank you 😁
Absolutely spot on mate, that's the main point, it can be as expensive or cheap as you want it to be depending on what you want. I love my lifestyle and it's exactly how I want to live. It's merely a guide of how I live, not a blueprint that others have to follow. If it helps and inspires someone to follow their dream, great! If people merely want to observe from afar but are happy in their life, fantastic! The key is being happy in your life. Cheers for watching 👍🏻

The most significant cost you forgot to mention is van depreciation. Initially, a good quality used van can cost £20,000 to Infinity, it may last 10 years, which would make it a minimum of £165 per month, it may not, they are after all designed to be used for holidays or camping and therefore low mileage & usage.
Another interesting video. As you are a RUclipsr and using the ad free service, can I ask how do the RUclipsrs get paid if we don’t watch the videos, does it have a financial impact on the channels you watch? Thanks for sharing your experience.
Pretty sure they get paid an amount per minute of video you watch if you have a membership. I heard a RUclipsr explain it recently. I can't remember how much it was per minute but they still get paid.
@@onemanandhisdog9 the difference is, the increased prices in the motor industry is a very odd one off, as a general rule you can't really assume that would happen.

He still spends a lot frankly even with no site fees - I spend less than he does as I do not waste money on gym clubs amazon prime etc and I have a phone contract at £20 a month that gives me unlimited data.
also add blocker on google stops any adverts on youtube again totally free
Just found you on RUclips...and it's brilliant!!! Keep them going!

We have had to use mayday twice. Absolutely fantastic service

Dazza, I remember you doing the last one, thanks for the update brother 👍
Really informative and useful and you are right you could save but as you say this is your lifestyle choice 👍
Thanks! exactly, this isn't just about living in a Motorhome to save money, its about the whole lifestyle and I flippin' love it

Were getting ready to go off grid, were organising ourselves, working out costs. This video is handy.thank u
Glad it was helpful!
Really good quality video Daz , more please ! , 😎

Great video, I love the lifestyle :)
I like to travel with a pedal bike in the back. I find it nice being able to park up and then just using the pedal bike for short commutes. Saves on fuel and engine wear, and free fitness too :)
That was an eye opener liked the vlog Daz 👍😀
Well done Dazzler, great video as always mate! When’s the next fishing one? 😉🎣 Take it easy … Smithy

Seems a lot to live in a van, but considering you spend almost 50% of your budget on petrol, it’s not really. Obviously living in a van doesn’t mean you have to spend £330 per month on petrol. I barely spent £100 per month on petrol for the two years I lived in a motor home.
Plus, many people with a house are also paying to keep a car or two on the road.
and did you use campsites?
Don’t think he uses petrol

That's the best budget video I've seen.
Great video. I was looking to buy a motor home but they are just so damn expensive.
I could be about 1.5 to 2 grand a month better off if I bin the house and live in a van!

been thinking about it for a while... but its a lot of money to buy a camper, and it won't necessarily hold it value after 2030... i personally think diesel is going to hammered in an even bigger way from 2030... and if you run out of wifi data(or want to save money), you can always hotspot off your phone(i do this when i'm parked up at services waiting for a call, i watch netflix on my tablet, hotspot off my phone... phone hotspot is ok to stream with, but i wouldn't trust it to xbox game or anything like that)....
People buy cars that lose a third of their value as they drive off the forecourt. Computers and phones are obsolete in 6months. Sorry, I sound like I'm being a dick. You can wait for prices to improve, but how much might you miss?

The most significant cost you forgot to mention is van depreciation. Initially, a good quality used van can cost £20,000 to Infinity, it may last 10 years, which would make it a minimum of £165 per month, it may not, they are after all designed to be used for holidays or camping and therefore low mileage & usage.
