RAM 1500 Rebel vs RAM 2500 Power Wagon | The Meek vs The Mighty?

  • Blessed are the meek, for they are more nimble, lighter and oddly a hair more capable at times than RAM's brash 3/4 ton off-road pickup truck. In this video I chat with Nick from RAM (aka RAM truck dude) and he tries to tell me why the Power Wagon is the better off-road pickup truck...

I think you also have to look at application if you are on a farm and have 10-20 acres of property to transverse you may want that 2500, whereas the 1500 can be more urban friendly, while allowing you to make those trips up to the country.

I'd pick the rebel diesel. It can do 90% of what the power wagon can but you get better interior comfort, on road comfort, better payload and much much more fuel efficient. It is nice that ram finally paired a decent transmission to the 6.4 - it needed it badly!

Just feedback on one of your points in the video. I had a Rebel with the same flooring as the Power Wagon here. The same folding flat platform with floor-mounted bins (no speakers). That's not specific to the 2500, it just depends on the options you buy in the truck. The 2500 series also come with the same floor as in your Rebel, again, depends on options. After buying my Rebel, I often longed for a PW myself. Now I have the 2019 2500. It is MUCH more capable on and off-road, and as a daily driver, it's almost as smooth a ride as the 1500. A bit more bed space, plus when hauling and towing similar loads, the 2500 does it better, and can do a lot more in a pinch.

Had two Power Wagon's, Now 2019 Rebel. Have Four Wheel Hawk Camper, had it on a 2016 Power Wagon, got a great buy on 2019 Ram Rebel Quad Cab, Rebel rides much better on highway and around town, with shorter wheel base of Quad cab is easier to park and drive off road. The rear differential on Power wagon has less clearance then the Rebel. Rebel gets about 3 mpg better than the Power Wagon around town, Rebel with less weight is much faster then Power Wagon. Loved my Power Wagon, but do not miss it at all, as I actually enjoy driving my Rebel around town with camper on it. I had to put air bags on the Power Wagon because of the weight of the FourWheel Hawk camper, with the 2019 Rebel I installed Timblem's, they just take the place of bump stops, and help support the weight of camper! Trouble with air bags, is getting them adjusted right, and they leak air.

I think Ram missed the mark when they kept the old interior in the new 2500. If I could get a Laramie interior (5 seat) on a PW, there would be no choice left to make. If the Laramie interior was available on the Rebel with the Ecodiesel, I would really have a hard choice to make.

    • @butchgamer93

The 2500 crew cab is the same configuration as the 4th gen. The 1500 crew cab is bigger. I understand that the floor shifter is the reason you can’t get the 5 passenger configuration. You're right! Anybody who has ever done off roading knows all too well that it is brutal on milage. Specially the slow almost crawling stuff. 6-7 mpg is seen all too often. The king of milage would probably be a ZR2 with the Duramax, but the Rebel with the Ecodiesel would be close and much more comfortable. I won't argue the ZR2 would be more capable but I'm no longer into maximum off roading ability so the Rebel would be sufficient. Of course when the Gladiator gets the Ecodiesel, all bets are off.
