A twist on the traditional woodworking shop tour. We go through one-by-one on the cost of each power tool and whether or not I paid for it. RUclips woodworkers tend to have big fancy shops with all the shiny new tools. I give my reasons and justify my tool choices and why my shop is so strange compared to a traditional woodworking shop.

Man. That shot of your shop starting at 0:11 was so awesome. Imagine how may creative/art-focused kids would be attracted to wood working if all woodsheds looked like this.
May be a lot of luck involved but you also put in the work. I’ve learned a lot from you over the years. You deserve all of your success. Btw you and Dan have really found your style both with editing and your presentation. Keep up the great work!
Calm down Miter Saw Boy. It’s OK, we like your fancy miter saw.
I had to laugh at your miter saw rant. Ok, I laughed at a lot of your commentary but the miter saw was the best. I have spent the most $$ on my miter saw and, while I love how it cuts, I HATE the pitiful excuse for a dust collection design. I had to McGiver an exhaust port just to get it to fit my collection hose without (literally) falling off the machine when I use it. When I build my retirement shop (if my son ever graduates college) I will get the Kapex. Keep being you. Big fan
@@rodneybosco7376 A good quality and chunky old radial arm saw might work too. They apparently have decent dust collection. And can accept negative hook dado blades. But the Kapex would be a hell of a lot easier. Buy, minimally set up, cut.
Amazing. Don’t ever apologize. I love how you acknowledged luck. Not everyone does. I grew up poor and remained poor. I lucked into a job that bought me a pretty amazing start up wood shop. I lost that job and sold my jointer. I deeply regret that. I do know, the more work I put in, luck seems to be on my side. I’ll get it back and I’m blessed that’s the only thing I sold. If it wasn’t for this new found hobby, I don’t think I’d be here. Love the videos
I definitely feel like 2023 is your year. You really seem to have found your groove again and I've really enjoyed your projects lately.
I love that you made this video. Your shop is looking fantastic! Also, those behind the wall scenes were the cherry on top, especially the first and last images. 💥
Your whole shop could have been sponsored for all I care, but it's what you make with your tools that matters.
I am loving your restoration projects lately, keep em up. I even found myself going back to one of your old videos (back when you were building in the basement) for a project inspiration.
Agreed. Your 2023 videos are some of your best videos. I'm glad you are reenergized because I'm having a blast watching!
The reason I watch your channel, and what sets it apart from others (to me) is how you make mistakes and recover. When I was learning I would become very discouraged when I screwed up. I watched your channel and you make mistakes but have fun with them. That helped me become a better woodworker. Thank you for that. Brag all you want you deserve to - you work hard at this and it comes through in every video (to me)!
oh man. Thank you! ❤️
I put carpet in my shop after David did. I LOVE it!!! Thank you David.
Don't worry about what anyone says. Life is about love laughter family friends and having fun. We can see you love what you do and have fun doing it. I personally want to thank you for bringing laughter and enjoyment into my home. My mother does not watch many diy videos however with some of the ones that you remake into wood from retro items she will sit here and watch them with me. Thank you again. You are creative and bring more joy to people than you will ever know.
“Sand in the place where you live” and it’s sweet to live in the place where you sand , dust free. Looking forward to many, many more cool projects from you Dave. Enjoy your day.
I really do love ending with "It's all about safety." I'm a less careful human than I should be, and I have regrets over physical repercussions from my early life. I try to be better about it but I'm still clumsy. Thank you for being a voice of reason for makers out there who want to make cool shit but recognize their own bodies aren't indestructible.
You’re a special human being, thanks for doing what you do (and not apologizing for it)
Let’s be honest here, David you are an EXTREMELY talented individual and you deserve everything you got. You did what most people won’t by getting off your butt and goin for your dreams. Is it scary, yes but you are doing it and killing it.
Thank you David loved the shop tour. Tools are expensive, haters are going hate
You are not bragging, and you don’t need anyone’s permission to buy the tools that make the most sense for you. I always enjoy your content and it’s had an impact. I was sanding my deck last weekend and was humming REM all the way through it. Because of you.
Such a breath of fresh air. The idea of the "shop" being a creative space is unique. Love it. Shut up and be creative and cut!
I never understand why people spend time in comments complaining about the tools youtubers use. I get they want to be able to make the same things, but you can have the tools too if you spend the money, otherwise, figure out a way to do it without them. Might be more difficult and take more time, but you will learn alot and hopefully enjoy the process. My shop is way too small for many of these and I just try to find different ways to do it. Great video.
Thanks for the tour, Dave!
I've been watching you since you were The Drunken Woodworker building bandsaw boxes, and weren't gray... lol
I know what it's like to build yourself and your brand up from the beginning.
The haters that complain about you upgrading to better tools and a nice shop need to get off the keyboard and their laze butts and make something (like what I did there?), and maybe then they'd understand that no matter how you obtained any of your things, purchases or sponsorship, you earned it.
Thank you, David.
You're an inspiration and one hell of a creator!
I'm pretty tired of Squarespace ads and often skip past them, but getting to see what was behind the door made it with watching.
3:38 I remember when you first moved in and you said you wanted everything to have a clean finish, white walls, very minimal. It's changed a lot and I only really noticed how much just know.
imagine working your ass off, creating free content, and then having to defend every tool you own. youre doing good work, Dave!
No apologies necessary with this subscriber. I have enjoyed your fun, creative projects. They inspire me to think outside the box.
Hard work deserves fun toys. You've earned your shop of toys.
Don't ever apologize to or try to appease those jealous for your success
You don't have to justify ANYTHING to ANYONE! Great job and keep creating. Big fan!!!
I can’t believe you left out your “fan” favorite tool from your Facebook purchases! That thing “blew” me away lol. All seriousness love that you did this video, you’ve come a long way from your basement shop to now. It’s not luck, it’s hard work. Keep it up!
Love seeing your shop and the tools you use. I don’t give a rat’s a** how you get your tools, it’s just fun watching you use them. I know that if I’m ever going to get back into woodworking, I’ll just sell more drugs and hope to have a shop as nice as yours.
Keep having fun, David!!
Came here for the woodworking, stayed for the fun and personality and creativity and inspiration.
Like April said, you didn’t get the tools for free, you earned them.
You do you. I’ll still keep coming back. A dogs gotta eat right?! 😂
I also believe that the videos you've made here in 2023 are the best videos you've ever made. Your energy and joy are apparent. Keep on doin' what you're doin'. Or not. Whatever. You don't have to listen to me. You do you. But seriously, go drill some holes and pound some pegs.
It's not a brag or luck. You are a talented hard worker person that made it happen. Good for you and keep it up.
Best part. "I'm all about safety". Promptly sends hand into Saw Stop blade without it on (thank goodness). and gets cut. Just having fun. I also only use Saw Stop. Great insight into your world!
It's easy for people to judge the end result when no one knows the struggle it took to get there. I have watched your skill in both woodworking and content mature over the years into where you are at currently. Keep up the good work. Long live the drunken woodworker!
I will never fault someone who does a job professionally for having top end tools. I do appreciate when projects don't rely 100% on tools that most people can't have ( for example, I don't really follow people who only show projects made with a CNC machine, as I will never have one of those )
Your creativity is what made me subscribe to your channel quite a while ago. Your videos are always great fun to watch, and they inspire me to think about and try to make things that are outside what I usually make. I enjoy them all. You don't owe anyone any apologies for your tools. Companies wouldn't want to give you tools if you hadn't done the work and you didn't have the creativity and talent to draw the audience that you have.
The explicit focus on fun and creativity and SAFETY is why this channel is one of the few I drop everything to watch the second I see a new video.
For some reason there's a kind of cultish undercurrent on woodworking / diy / maker youtube that's obsessed with gatekeeping crap like fighting over what is "true" woodworking, "accessible diy", tools, etc. It's the same tendency you see in online games fandoms that tend to devolve into arguments over 'hardcore' vs 'casual' players. That's all just faff.
Dont worry about the BS, Keep being you! or to put it another way: "Have Fun, Stay Passionate and Make Something" :)
Hi,
Can you share some of your other favorites?
It's all about having fun, love it!
My man you are a freaking rock star! Please don't apologize for making a dope shop. You worked your ass off and earned it! If the fans wanna be nasty it's because they are Jealous! You are a huge inspiration and one of the first guys I followed when my addiction started. I just built my own $40000 shop and am damn proud as you should be!
One of many reasons i love your channel
I've been watching for a while. Every pivot you take in your projects I'm here for. You bring an energy and a style that is real enjoyable. If I'm jealous of anything in your shop, it's that artist wall. Man oh man. Thank you!
I really don’t care where any of your tools came from. All I care about is that you keep posting, I couldn’t imagine not having your content. Thank you for all you do.
I like how at the very, very end, when everything else was said, you end with "and it's all about the safety"... reinforcing the old motto... Safety Last!
Ok, I liked the green screen ad more than I thought I would and definitely more than I should.
love the transparency... good stuff
Wow I wasnt thinking this was a brag, until you got all into that!
Thanks for the honesty😊
It's like April keeps yelling at Jimmy, you didn't get it for free, you worked super hard to get it! Always love your videos man they're so good!
I just listened to that episode of Making it!
You're one of the best channels on YT, imo. I always enjoy your content even though I never really plan to build what you do. But I do walk away with a ton of helpful ideas and inspirations from your builds. That's where it counts.
I appreciate your sincereness. No, I don't have all the things you have. But I'm not jealous, I'm happy for you.
You should brag about that table saw addition. It is awesome, I loved that video.
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. It's not often you see this level of honesty and transparency. I've always enjoyed your content. It's fun, and it's accessible (mostly) (I don't have all the digital tools you have and I struggle with the Shaper Origin....learning that I suck at digital modeling....). I have learned a lot from you. I'm always hopeful you'll have a new project. They are truly inspiring. Not to copy, but to inspire some new project I can do. Go to the thrift store and pick up some cheapo thing, then remake it into something cool. What a great idea! The lamp was awesome. And so much fun. Thank you. Dan, nicely done on the videos! Looks great. :)
David, damnit don’t apologize for anything given to you or that you have bought because what nobody understands (which they don’t need to) is you have worked your ass off for everything you have. I’m 64 and an old disabled cabinet and furniture builder. I wish I would have worried about my health. I have a small shop and I’m finally worrying about that. Since being on fixed income now, I discuss any tool purchase with my wife and I have finally bought my first Festool (no crappy comments back to me people) and it was the CT15 and the 125 sander. Absolute night and day from other sander and shop vac. I love being in my shop and my 33 year old daughter wants me to teach her. Anyway getting off topic. Be proud of your space and f everyone else. I wish a had your shop. Keep it up, this is why I watch, your dead truth honesty
I think the other misconception is that you bought it all at once. It makes sense to get one or two tools a year or every couple of years. It all adds up. Great workshop and very creative!
David, your videos over the past few months are all awesome... you can definitely "feel" how you've been rejuvenated. The creativity is awesome..can't wait to see what's next
Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend. Keep Making. God Bless.
Love your videos. They are so creative and you really push the design of work you like even if it may not be everyone’s favorite. Can’t wait to see the second half of the year.
Definitely one of the coolest shops on RUclips!
Honestly, I think it’s cool when you are able to leverage your influence to get tools.
Been here since the DW days... bring on 1M. Getting better every year.
Love the transparency man!
Love it! Thanks for the fun
"You kidding me?!?!?" 🤣😂🤣
Gonna be honest, I gasped when you scribbled the paint on the Festool logo. 😲😲😲
Ain't nothing free, that's hard work that's paid off in other ways than money. Don't sell yourself short you artist you. Btw your shop looks like a legit companies space. Clean and crisp. Dope. I dig it
David, Well said keep up what your doing.
you're creative and have a great sense of humor. oh, no more desk redos.
Love you David and you’ve worked hard for your success; boo on the haters!
Love the transparency. That sliding crosscut table is one of the best and most innovative videos on RUclips in the woodworking community.
Picciuto's shop is the most unshoppy looking shop, it must be amazing creating in there. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts!
Good Morning Dan!
Excellent video this morning. Thank you so much for your production and work. I believe that a word of caution may be in order for you. That actor you use ( I think he said his name is "David") he seems to be a bit cocky and condescending to the true talent of the channel. You may want to revisit his contract.
LOL! David and Dan I have been watching you guys for such a long time. Thank you for showing everything and being transparent. I watch several makers and I watch for inspiration and process. Not the tools. You guys have always kept things fun and real. My gratitude for your channel cannot be adequately expressed.
David I’m happy for you that you’ve been able to accumulate the tools that you need to bring your creativity to fruition! The fact that some companies have seen how great your channel is and gave you tools to use is awesome too! And it always cracks me up when you swear and place the bleep just off of the word so you can still hear it!
As passionate as ever! Great to see.
I love your shop. And yes, it's all about your creativity for our pleasure. Never change David, you are great. Cheers from Canada.
Thanks for the tour!
Appreciate you and all the stuff you do.
Keep it up 😊
I'm having fun with you! I've always loved your channel.
Thank you, David, for continuing to provide quality entertainment and inspiration.
"Fact " You have the right to brag you did what it takes to get where you are so i do not see it as bragging and Thank you for sharing a great video.
Luck happens when opportunity meets preparation.
Don't think that could make your rules list, but good words to live by.
Great setup. Awesome some things were given and discounted. Keep making awesome things.
Fun video, David! Enjoy your content here and hearing you on your podcast. God bless!
Sir, this has got to be one of my favorite of your videos. You are without a doubt the most unique maker on youtube who is mostly dedicated to woodworking. I love your shop. It's an inspiration. What I don't get is why anyone on YT cares one lick about what's in the comments. Really, even youtubers with millions of subs make comments about what's in the comments and I don't get it. Who cares? Just keep being you. You are great. (btw, if I had had 1500 bucks when I bought my slide compound, I would have bought the Kapex too but I only could afford the Makita for 600 and change....so, I get it. Buy the best tool you can afford)
My 'shop' is 4ft x 6ft and is shared with my heating/hotwater system so even a tool like a bench top drill press is too big. That does not stop me from watching your videos and getting inspiration. I watch you do stuff with all those fancy tools then sit down and try to work out how I can do that with seriously limited hand tools and skill levels. Most of the time I fail completely but boy do I have fun trying. For me those are the two most important points you made in this video - get inspired and have fun! As for the luck, well it goes both ways. Sometimes good, sometimes bad. I get the impression that you accept both but don't rely on it.
At 65 years of age I'm never going to have any of those fancy tools or a big shop and I just don't care. I just want to make sawdust and have fun changing the shape of bits of cheap crappy wood 'cos that's what rocks my boat 🤣
Stay safe, have fun, be you and go feed those weinerdogs!
It looks you've really nailed the Comet Ping Pong vibe.
It’s funny the harder you work the luckier you get ! Keep up the great channel ❤
You never have to apologize for success that allows for the purchase of high quality tools. I sell at farmers market to buy better quality tools. You put in the work, enjoy the tools
Awesome shop vibe. I have been subed since DWW and have the t shirt. I agree you videos have progressively gotten better and this year has been have been very good and engaging. I think I have watched more videos till the end than before.
Great video, Dave. Long time subscriber, always appreciate your ideas, creativity and twist on "woodworking". Agree, there's no other channel like this one and that's great. Keep it up.
Great video. Thx for the honesty 😊
Your hard work and creativity paid for all the tools.
Great video! Too many people make really silly assumptions about our tools (and greatly over inflate their cost). Thanks for sharing and please keep taking us along your creative journey!
You have a really nice shop! And in your videos, we can tell you work hard! Nothing wrong with your choice of tools. At the end of the day, you paid or got given them, makes no difference as long as you are honest of your reviews, I personally appreciate learning about stuff I may want to buy my self.
Mate, you talk about luck, but luck is when preparation meets opportunity. Your preparation and hard work opens opportunities you have been able to embrace. I respect what you have shared here. Yes, don't apologise for what you have been able accomplish. Well done, thank you so much for sharing.
Been following you for years and have loved to see you and the shop grow. Congrats on your journey! 🍻
It’s actually nice to watch a good youtube channel that earns and pays for most of their important tools. It gets old seeing channels upgrade everything with free shit that really takes me out of the moment and watch them less. Most of us in the teal world will never get anything free so why would we want to see others that can barely build something deck out their shops with thousands of dollars worth of free stuff?
Hi David. Love the honesty in this video. I have learnt a lot from you over the years, from the early days of building your, "I don't like" shop furniture. Love the simple design of these by the way, and they sure stand the test of time. Love the new direction now though, with the fun aspect being put into the builds and just they way you approach each project. Other YT content creators could take a leaf or two from your book. Oh, BTW, if you have any free tools offered, and you don't want them, send them my way. Keep up the great work , stay safe and have fun.
I have watched you for years. I stopped watching RUclips in 2022. I lost my love to build stuff. Last night I had something in my head that said go back to RUclips. So tonight I started watching RUclips again and your Table saw video was the first video that popped up. It was meant to be that you were the first video of my comeback. I love your new shop great idea it’s your shop so make it your shop. I’m changing my mindset thanks to you thank you David keep Making Something.
Welcome back!
I’m a big fan. Have been for a long time.. great to hear you speak so honestly although you don’t owe it to anyone! I love the new videos you are doing from the thrift stores… I look forward to your videos each week. Keep up the good work!
Great video, I love seeing all of your tools no matter the expense or how you got it, I look at it like, I may never own or use that tool but it's cool to see how they work and what your amazing mind can make with them!
Thank you for doing this video and for the honesty and transparency. I agree with some of the others free or not you have earned the tools you have making and sharing the videos you make are informative and funny love watching your channel always a great time and helpful and how you work and show how to work through problems. Keep up the great work and shout out to your brother
Hell ya! Keep it up, Dave! Love to see whatever you are working on. Get as much free stuff as you can!
Also, Make Something can claim the tool purchases as business expenses, which helps.
