Great video and shop! One note is to move the fire extinguisher to a doorway. If the laser does have an issue you don’t want to reach over/through the fire to get the extinguisher. Never put the extinguisher next to the likely source of the fire. Same goes for any inside your home (don’t put the extinguisher next to the stove or breaker panel).
Can concur. We have a rolling torch at work that has started quite a few fires. There is an extinguisher mounted to the cart. That is NEVER the extinguisher that gets used.
Your shop was one of the first things that made your videos stand out in a world where so many look like a village farm museum. Eye catching and non-distracting. Something I'll bear in mind when I eventually sort mine out.
I have a sign hanging in my shop that says "this will be a weird room when I die." I really love the idea of making spaces for artists to fill out with their own identities. In a more just world everyone would have that opportunity.
I was thinking that too, I'm trying to get back into making videos and was trying to make my shop perfect, it's good to know I'm not the only one with tons of parts and pieces that aren't perfectly organized. Still have a ways to go to match his shop though.
Came for the shop tour, stayed for the goal setting. Goal setting is one of my absolute favorite things and it’s awesome to see people put their goals out there and then watch them accomplish those goals. I’m not in Toledo, and I’d have no real reason to visit Toledo, but when you get your community art center/maker space up and running, I’ll have to make a visit. Sounds like an awesome thing. 🍻 here’s to accomplishing goals
Thank you. I am inspired to keep going . I am 60 years old and watching you makes me feel young and hopeful. Not sure why. God Bless. I hope you and your loved ones are well.
i have old carpet down in most of my shop. saved a few breakages too i think as it absorbs a lot of impacts. only problem is it makes vacuuming a bit more of an effort
So… no one is going to ask about the random NES controller by the CNC? The funniest thing is that I didn’t even feel like it was out of place. I can definitely see you getting some retro gaming in as a cooldown for times when a project isn’t going as planned. Fits all the 80s/90s references. I love when you slide in those entertaining sound/video bites. Keep making it fun and thanks for sharing even the not-so-glamorous details about your space. Keep it real.
@@EvanDunville Ahhh… makes sense. I’m guessing he mentioned that in a CNC video, but I know my chances of ever getting one are slim so I try not to torture myself by watching videos about them. 😂
I can’t believe it’s been 5 years already. I admire everything that you have done and the way you do your videos. You have been an inspiration for me for a long time. Thank you for what you and Dan do.
I love that every maker only dreams of building a big shop and sharing it with others. David, April, Anne, etc. I'm working on my new building for the same reason. Great video David!
Anne is building a school, albeit it still is technically a bigger shop lol! She definitely has taken it a different route though :) I love watching everyone's individual journey with different time frames, budgets, and goals. Its fun to watch the growth, the changes, the successes and the regrets with these Makers!
What kind of madman watches at 1x speed? Ain't nobody got time for that. I really enjoyed hearing about your future plans. Definitely something to be excited about.
I woke up the whole family with my laughing this morning. A lot of cool tools and machines in the MS shop. The opening and closing of drawers under lathe was hilarious. I have some of those drawers myself.
I love how this is real. No f's given. Not trying to pass his shop off for something it normally isn't. Great tour thanks for keeping it frosty my friend!
I got the same design experts commenting on my "coolest wooden box ever" video. I did the exposed piano hinge on purpose on that since it went with the box joints I cut in the corners. Some people's kids, eh? Thanks for the tour!
Thanks for showing the messy sides of your shop and the unfinished shop furniture. Im building a router table and needed that reminder that it just needs to work and doesnt have to be perfect.
Always find your energy uplifting and motivating. Have gone through several "dream shops", they are never as organized as you want. The bigger the space, the more room for chaos. Thanks for making the content.
I love how passionate you are. I've said this before; one of if not the most creative makers on RUclips. Thanks for making content and I hope those big dreams of yours comes into reality.
You owe me a hug Dave. lol. enjoyed it immensely. Love the passion and eclectic taste and projects. You're probably my favorite maker on RUclips. Really appreciate all you do. so much creativity. You inspire me.
People don't like that piano hinge? Man, you don't need that kind of negativity in your life. Tell those folks to give that video a "Thumbs down" but be REAL emphatic about it and mash that "Down" thumb TWICE! (haha - see what I did there? Can't take credit though - that's Crafsman who came up with that one). Honestly, over the last 5 years I didn't know what to make of the shop, or at least at the beginning, I thought all the attention to sound/light/hiding hand tools, etc was just WAY too out there. Over the years though, I've come to realize it WORKS! Sound and light is great, and best of all - when watching a video, I'm watching YOU and what YOU'RE doing - not fixating on the mess in the background. In a way, there's something calming about not having so much visual distraction. I used to be like Adam Savage in a way - keeping all those tools out where you can see them, but over time (and because of my massive space constraints), I've started to follow the "Picciuto Method" and switched to tools going in drawers and cabinets. I love your vision for the future plans. Would love to see that evolve into reality.
Yhea just try not to copy his never finishing things or the disorganisation of the draws. The layout, design and stuff are all really good and generally we thought out its just his disorganised after that that I couldn't live with.
Definitely the most irreverent shop tour ever. Loved it! Unfinished shop furniture, tools tossed in drawers, things that aren't perfect! LOVED IT! Makes me feel like maybe there's hope for me too. Thanks David, drunk or not, you're awesome.
The long video was worth it for me; I'm building out my dual workshops. I have a 40'x60' w/20' ceiling commercial steel building (steel column, trusses, and thick steel siding). It is broken into two sections, a 40'x15' for my camper and a 40'x45' for the workshop side. The workshop has an 18'x45' loft (9ft ceiling below) in the rear with the future woodshop below and storage above. The front is the metal/mechanical work area. Just starting the rewiring and waiting on the power company to hook up the service. Upgrading from 100amp 240v single phase to 400amp 240v 3phase. Lucky for me, I have a ground transformer in my yard 65ft from the building. The previous owner ran a Might Automotive Parts distributor out of the building when they built the house on the property in '03. The local code required a commercial transformer even if he didn't use it because of the business. Lucky for me, it's already here; I hate to see the price to put that in. I'm 400ft off the road, back into the woods. I'm always looking for different ideas for setting up my giant mancave up.
I enjoy the slightly more vlog-style feel this video has. I would be interested in seeing more "off the cuff" vlog videos from you. Just you working on things in the shop; doesn't even have to be full build videos. I just love seeing how other people work.
That was one of the best shop tours. I love the Demolition Man beauty up top, chaos down below drawer situation. I also LOVE all the color and purple in there. I love your channel. Never stop. I hope your goals come true. Thank you for the time you put into everything for your audience.
As a rule, I don't watch shop tours. I watched this one because I knew it would be fun, and I was not disappointed. Many laugh out loud moments, and many memories of fun projects of the last few years. Mad respect for making your work space a video studio and holding hard to that. I love how everything looks so nice and clean. I love the art in the background. It makes the production of art in the foreground that much more interesting. Really interesting to hear you talk about future plans here. I think it's the first time I've heard you discuss them and it sounds super exciting. As a long time viewer and fan, thanks for all the art and joy you bring to your videos. I always know I will learn something from them and have fun along the way. Thanks for sharing!
I love how passionate you are about your plans for an art community in Toledo. I love the idea! Would be an amazing space. I’m near Wheeling WV and just got into woodworking a year ago. Have 100 acres and would love to make it into an art community one day.
Maker spaces like the one you are describing are very rare and would be welcome in just about any community. The one's we have here in Chicago are either massive collections of junk and broken machines or cater exclusively to very high end users like architects and design firms with user fees out the wazoo.
One of the things I love about your shop is that it proves that effort produces results. If you can making it here, you can making it anywhere, even if you make chicken feathers.
I love the progress on the workshop! The maker and gallery space in Toledo sounds awesome! I’m getting close to getting a space setup in southeast Michigan but not on your scale. I understand hanging lots of plans and trying to make them happen!
Been watching you for a long time, but hadn't been in my feed for some reason. Catching up I found this video and by the end I have to say it's really exciting to hear your plans here in Toledo. I really hope you complete it and if so as a local Waterville resident, I can't wait to see it!
I come back to this video every now and then and i always wonder about the dust. Seeing sanders right next to the laser or having TV's and computer screens just makes me wonder how often you have to deep clean/dust? I would love to make my shop as nice and comfortable as yours one day, i just worry I'd drive myself insane with the dust! Love your content❤️
David. "I don't know what this is doing in here. I need to fix that." Also David "I hate shop furniture." Great video, keep being awesome and good luck with your future endeavors.
I have a lot of the same goals and dreams you do. It's awesome to see someone with the same pation for making and art, both your own and others. Keep being you and good luck on your vision.
Great tour. The shop has changed over the 5 years. I LOVE your big dreams. I totally want to do something like that in my area. I thought I found the building and some people willing to help make it happen. May still happen. Oh… and you owe me a big hug!!!!
Love to hear how excited you are about you big plans. This is what I come back for is seeing someone excited about what they are doing now matter what it is. Keep it up David!
David, I absolutely love your videos. I can't believe it's been five years. By the way, the Impala is gorgeous. Watching you live your dream -- and learning from you has been a pleasure.
For sound isolation, you could have gotten the thinner drywall. Put it up and then a second layer with the joints staggered. Also no screws. Glue the second layer to the first, so there is no penetration between the layers to carry the sound.
I've been following you for so long. not commenting much, but enjoying every minute. remember so many good times in the old shop and can't wait to see where the journey goes.
On the lathe, several people I know had the 16 inch nova lathe and loved it. only reason they got rid of it is the age old they wanted bigger. One got a powermatic. You will always want bigger :) I have a couple of smaller lathes my dream is a 22 or 24 inch.
I have been following you since way before this shop. But this video gives me the best view of the inner man that drives the passion. Thus I love your shop. Especially the drawers! Keeping making! And you owe me a 🤗
We are always interested in what you have to say, David. You`re an absolute inspiration to me and I have no doubt whatsoever that you will fulfill each and every one of your dreams that you wish to. I enjoy watching you enjoy what you do so well. Not only are your neighbors' good peeps but you are as well, friend. I wish I was your neighbor, that would be most awesome.
You give me hope. My shop is on the back patio of our house. My wife had wanted a deck from the time we built our house. Fifteen years later we built a wonderful deck 48' feet long and 16' feet deep. Now there is no room on our deck for socializing. Table saw, router table, miter saw, one work table so cluttered with miscellaneous tools and materials. Oh all my lumber is on the deck also. I guess the reason the this video resonated with me is that you showed all your drawers with all the clutter. When you opened your drill bit drawer I was looking at my drill bit drawer. I don't know if I should celebrate the, for lack of a better word, mess or know that I am destined never to have an organized shop. We are moving to a much smaller house (one third of the square footage of our current home) but I did build a 65' x 30' metal building that is in the design phase for a garage and shop. Watching you and others on YT is giving me a lot of direction with my shop plans. Great video!
"Budget woodworking" is really good branding, David. Personally, I love to switch back and forth between super-high-end, like Nick Pedulla's shop and Tamara Hannah's early videos in her unheated garage. (Yours is always an "eclectic multi-treat"! ... in the same vein as Laura Kampf) But so many great RUclips makers end up over time at the high end of tools and techniques, which frankly, I'm never going to want in my shop. Then their videos become nearly (or entirely) irrelevant except as tasty spectator sports (like Nick's videos, bless him). "Budget Woodworking" sounds like the perfect name for your next RUclips channel.
Love the video from start to finish. I will hold you to your promise. Someday our paths will cross. Cannot wait to get one of the new t-shirt designs and maybe a hat. Let's go and get the new studio's going. It will be worth the trip to Toledo.
i subbed for several reasons, but mainly because of the piano hinge on your hand made tool box. just to own the haters. mad respect for everything you say after the 40 minute mark...i can relate to having big plans for the future, including wanting to make a space for others with out access to tools and space. that seems like such a cool thing to do. i really look forward to seeing what you do in the future! keep it up brudda.
Enjoyed the shop tour video David. You have a great future plan and I hope all your plans come to fruition sooner than you think. All of you all take care and God bless.
I'm "right down the road" in Pittsburgh, so may come for that hug lol. Getting ready to possibly move from a basement shop to a place where I can convert a 2 car garage, but noise and possible Hoa is worrying me. Thank you for covering some of you sound deadening solutions!
your commentary is the best on youtube 🖤
❤️ Thank you!

Watching you dig through your drawers is nice. Everything isn't perfectly put away. Reminds people that youtubers are regular people too.

I commented several days ago, but I thought of something else-I love how you have a vision for what’s on the horizon.
This is amazing! I'll definitely draw some inspo from your setup whenever I happen to have a shop in the future - sliding wall storage included.

The long video was worth it for me; I'm building out my dual workshops. I have a 40'x60' w/20' ceiling commercial steel building (steel column, trusses, and thick steel siding). It is broken into two sections, a 40'x15' for my camper and a 40'x45' for the workshop side. I’ll take that hug if I’m ever in Toledo. I love the evolution of the work space. The idea of a community creative space is great.
The corded tool drawer was my favorite!
About the future shop ideas, what you are talking about sounds like a variation on a “makerspace” kind of place. Go for it!

My shop is an 8x12 shed. I put my joiner, planer and table saw on carts I built so I can roll them outside so I have room.
I love your dry sense of humor, best shop tour video I've ever seen.
The piano hinge’s looks great

Long video. But a good video. Best of luck with all your future endeavors. You are a true craftsman and a pleasure to watch.
I have been following you since way before this shop. But this video gives me the best view of the inner man that drives the passion. Thus I love your shop. Especially the drawers!
Keeping making! And you owe me a 🤗
When you did the big pan around the room I thought at a quick glance it looks more like a preschool classroom than a shop. Very cool!
I tend to think preschoolers are way more creative than adults. So I'll take that!
It was great seeing this , I remember when you moved in
I want build out my garage. I liked seeing what you have done so it gives me ideas.
That was very good! Watched entire video.
Regular speed here 🖐🏻😂 always appreciate your sincereness and your future plans look great
Only you would reuse dust collector bags but have 3 CNC machines 😂. Love your videos! Keep being real 🙏
Thanks Will!
i subbed for several reasons, but mainly because of the piano hinge on your hand made tool box. just to own the haters. mad respect for everything you say after the 40 minute mark...i can relate to having big plans for the future, including wanting to make a space for others with out access to tools and space. that seems like such a cool thing to do. i really look forward to seeing what you do in the future! keep it up brudda.
🙏
Enjoyed the shop tour video David. You have a great future plan and I hope all your plans come to fruition sooner than you think. All of you all take care and God bless.
I've always been a fan of benchtop bandsaws, to keep a scroll cutting blade on so you can keep a 1/2 or larger blade on your bih saw.
Thanks for sharing your space. Stealing some ideas!
I’ve been here since the beginning. I hope I’m still here to see the bigger shops in the future.
I'm "right down the road" in Pittsburgh, so may come for that hug lol. Getting ready to possibly move from a basement shop to a place where I can convert a 2 car garage, but noise and possible Hoa is worrying me. Thank you for covering some of you sound deadening solutions!
Yes. I watched the whole thing, man!
And I hope you are able to achieve your goals.
I’ll save the hug for when we meet at a Maker event one day. 😁
i would love to see a video with you and Adam Savage together. it would be awesome . get er done...
