I love decorating the walls in my house. I’ve been known to paint them with murals and cover them with photos. But now that I have a cutting machine, it’s SO easy to create my own wall decor with vinyl! But here’s the thing - I like to make wall decor that is BIGGER than will fit on a standard 12″ x 12″ cutting mat. At first it might seem impossible, but you CAN totally do it and I’m going to show you how to make these large wall decals and larger-than-mat projects.
MATERIALS LIST (contains my affiliate links):
• Removable vinyl, preferably in rolls (I used the Cricut brand -- one roll each of Cream, Caribbean Blue amzn.to/2ThyXAC , Sunshine Yellow amzn.to/2WiOl1E , Flamingo Pink amzn.to/2S8ulzn , and white, plus two rolls of Grape amzn.to/2TgJcFB )
• A 24" long cutting mat (if you don't have one, you can use a 12" cutting mat and cut the design into smaller sections) amzn.to/2MAaBzF
• Transfer tape (I used three rolls of Cricut transfer tape) amzn.to/2CS14j8
• Painter's tape
• Weeding tool
• Scissors
• Craft knife or X-acto knife amzn.to/2G3Es24
• A way to cut your vinyl (I used the amazing Cricut) - see jennifermaker.com/cricut-cutt...
• My free SVG/DXF/PDF cut files/patterns (Design # 138) (available in my free resource library-get the password at the bottom of this post)
UPDATES/CHANGES: Check for any updates, changes, or additional videos for this project at jennifermaker.com/updates
First, let’s consider the type of walls that work best - these large vinyl decals are going to work best on smooth walls. You’ll find it a challenge if you have textured walls. For this tutorial, I had Greg paint a 4′ x 4′ board with an interior flat paint, exactly the same stuff most of us have on our walls. And I put large, 3-foot square vinyl decoration on it. Also be sure your wall is clean and free of dust.
Next, the vinyl! It’s important that you use removable vinyl on your walls - if you don’t, then when you go to remove your large wall decal because it’s time to move or you want to refresh your look, you might accidentally take some drywall off with it. But if you use removable vinyl, you won’t have any issues removing it. Cricut says it’s removable for up to two years, no doubt because adhesives do break down over time. So keep that in mind, especially if you’re a renter.
And what about the mat? You CAN use a standard 12″x12″ mat to do this if that’s all you have, but if you can get a 12″x24″ mat - it’ll mean less work for you! I used a 12″ x 24″ cutting mat. In fact, I used two so I could get the next mat ready while the other one was cutting.
Finally, you need to consider the design. Not all designs will translate well to the wall - you’ll want to start with a high-quality SVG, not a PNG or other lower resolution image. For this tutorial, I drew a couple of cute unicorns. They’re sized at 10″ in the file, but you can scale them up to whatever size you want (I went to 31″ high). Now as 31″ high is too big to all fit on one mat, you need to separate it into mat-sized pieces and then join it after you cut it.
STEP 1: GET A DESIGN YOU CAN SCALE UP AND PREPARE IT FOR CUTTING
STEP 2: PREPARE AND CUT YOUR VINYL
STEP 3: WEED YOUR VINYL FOR YOUR WALL DECAL
STEP 4: ASSEMBLE AND LAYER YOUR DESIGN
STEP 5: APPLY YOUR TRANSFER TAPE
STEP 6: PUT YOUR LARGE DECAL ON YOUR WALL
So I’m hoping you now see how to make large projects that are bigger than your cutting mat. It’s not difficult to do - you just need to separate whatever you want to make into mat-sized pieces and then put them together again after you cut them out.

This is so cute & fun. Thanks for not editing out the hard parts so we can see the pitfalls to avoid and how to fix them! You are truly a blessing in the Cricut/Vinyl world!
You're so calm and organized! I'm a hot mess when I use my Cricut lol
You can do it! Just take a deep breath and do your best! :) I make PLENTY of mistakes! I promise!
AGREED!!
I just got one and I know I'll be a mess too..lol
LOL....RIGHT!
I’m a mess, I get frustrated and stop. I have to figure out a way to keep going
The patience you had through the entire video gave me confidence because I always start freaking out when certain things happen, but you reassuring “don’t worry we can fix that” made me feel so much better!
So glad to hear that!
I made this assumption about larger pieces and I'm so glad you decided to tap into our minds. yours came out great I'm excited to try it! I love it!! You're amazing!
Excellent video! I truly appreciate you sharing a start to finish tutorial. You kept it real showing the tricky parts - vinyl wrinkles and managing the oversized pieces of vinyl, transfer tape, and the finished large decal. Thank you! Wishing you a super week. Hugs Susan
THIS IS THE EXACT VIDEO I WAS LOOKING FOR JUST 2 HOURS AGO!!!! My mom just moved and she wants wall decal
You explain everything so well, thank you!
Terrific job! Thank you for this video. I often wondered how to cut and join larger vinyl images and you took the mystery out of it for me. Thank you, Jennifer. You’re awesome!
Jennifer,
I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your videos. I recently had someone else I follow offer a video on how to avoid the top mistakes people make with their Cricut. It was a one hour sales pitch for the “Master” class being sold for over $200. A big waste of time. It did, however, give me an even greater appreciation for your hard work on the in depth videos you produce. Thank you for sharing your time, talent, and insights at no charge.
This video in particular was SO much clearer and easier than another one I already watched. Breaking it into the large mats is key. I’ll be investing in large mats for a large stenciling project that’s been on my “some day” list for a couple of years.
Thanks again for all you do to help us at home crafters.
Wow! a big job. You did an amazing job. You explained it perfectly.
Thank you for this awesome video Jennifer! I've learned so many new techniques with your tutorials, I can't thank you enough. Thank you so much for the wonderful job you do!
Bless you! This was so complicated, you are amazing to do this for everyone out here!!
Awe.. Thank you! So happy to help!
Thanks Jennifer, love to see large image with paper
Thank you! Although I probably won't be doing this design. This video convinced me to buy a Circuit machine. I have been looking at them for years. I love that the newest machine cuts fabric. You are amazing keep going with your channel. I have now subscribed and I hope to watch many more and learn from you. I absolutely love that you didn't assume that we know everything. People that are new to this really need the detail.
This is really cute! Thanks for letting us see the difficult parts so we know what to look for in our own projects. That is so helpful! Thank you again Jennifer!!
You are so welcome, Chris! I believe it's difficult to show as much as I can - difficult parts especially! 😁😍
This is the cutest thing EVER! I love it Jennifer. I'm glad you made a video about this!
Thank you!
This is amazing and I totally love it. You did an amazing job. I can't wait to try it. 😁😁 I would love to see this on paper as well.
I've seen this done before, but your video was much easier to understand. You have the patience of a saint Jennifer and I love your soothing voice. Thanks for showing how this is done and yes it would be cool to see it done with paper as well. Hugs, Brenda
I've been intimidated by my Cricut my husband bought me as gift last Christmas. I found your channel tonight, and I'm inspired. I love how you cover all the bases and trouble shoot challenging situations. Thank you, and I look forward to watching more!
Be ready to face intimidation many times!!! I swear it is part of the Cricut culture!! Have had my machine for a couple of years and there are still times that I get intimidated.
Be gentle and kind to yourself- you will master it.
Happy crafting!!
Thank you for taking the time in doing these videos. They are very helpful. Keep up the good work! Well done!
Thank you for a great step by step tutorial. I would also like to see the paper version. I have been cricuting now for about 4 years and you have become my go-to gal for anything "how to" related! Keep up the amazing work!
I thought being the video was very long it would loose my interest and I'd be fast forwarding a lot. NOT THE CASE! I found your tutorial very interesting, informative, and was hooked start to finish! Not only did I learn how to tackle Larger Than Mat projects, but all your little tips were extremely helpful. I'm definitely heading out to get me one of those big cutting surfaces you used!
Same!
Wow! Thank you so much! I'm glad you liked it. ❤️
Thanks for the detailed instructions! Excellent video!
You go girl! You made the project less scarier than what I thought it was and always explained awesomely. Thank you so much for being a Cricut Superwoman; don’t know what we would do without you!
You are so welcome! That makes me so happy to hear!! I am so thankful it was so helpful for you! 🌸
Love this, I am going to try this for my granddaughter for Christmas, she wants a huge unicorn stuff animal, so this would be great to go with it. Thank you 🙏
Sounds like a great gift for your granddaughter, I'm sure she'll love it! ❣️
Hi Design On A Dollar! Did you make the larger than mat Unicorn for your granddaughter? If so, can you share your experience in making it? Thank you and Happy New Year!
great channel amazing content! I would love to see this video with cardstock as well.
You are amazing! Thank you for being so patient and explaining every little important detail.
Thanks so much!
Great tutorial. Thank you for your time showing such a large project. It really does help to see all kinds of projects done. Thank you!!
Love it, was worried about how to do this.
You're amazing I can't wait to get started on this! Thank you so much!
Woot! Thanks for watching! Best of luck on your decal!
You did an AMAZING job on this project! Thanks for showing us step by step! 😁💜
This would look great in a nursery or kid's play room! My grandson likes dinosaurs right now. I might do that, if I get brave enough! 😁💜🦕🦖
I am SO glad to see how this is done. Thanks SO much for all you do!
I want to see the B-roll footage on this one, particularly the part where you throw the empty wine bottle at camera guy (greg?) hahaha, very frustrating project obviously, you look exhausted by the time you finish it. I'm not that committed, kudos and BRAVO on completion of the project, I did sit through the video though to absorb the process.
Haha!! Thank you so much for watching, Kevin! :)
Great video, buy I would like to see something made with card stock. It would be nice to see how you take the card stock off the mats, how you tape them together to look seamless. I can see how vinyl is easy because it's adhesive, but a video with card stock and the types of glues and tapes to use would be helpful. And how to stand them up. Again, great video, I wish I had your videos when I first got my machine.
(sorry if this is "common knowledge") with Cardstock make sure you use the light stick (purple) cricut mats.
@@monkeywizard77 Blue is light grip and purple is strong :)
OMG! Jennifer you did it again. Thank you so much for your tutorial. I learned so much - saving and moving pieces to another vinyl which I did not know. *Thank you soooo much!* _You are one of a kind and that's unique_
Glad it was helpful! Thanks so much for your sweet comments, they truly mean a lot to me!
Jennifer, you are the first person that explained how to layer in a way I could easily understand. I truly appreciate your awesome video and look forward to future ones! Thank you so much!
You are so welcome, Deb! Glad it was helpful! 😍
I want to try this, but it’s giving me anxiety just watching you work with these big pieces!
im just like wow too expensive a gamble lol
Great video, but I cringe at how much vinyl and transfer tape you waste! I hope you just spread everything out so much because it was faster for the video, but you could have moved a lot of those pieces much closer together to save on your materials. That stuff is expensive!
Same here, when she was saying to "spread things out" I was like what??? you mean smash them in together so you can have huge chunks leftover you can use for the small bits of things later on, right? RIGHT?!
I'll be honest, with my Midwestern penny pinching ways I purposely offset my materials by 1/8ths of an inch both down and to the right so I don't have the 1/4 inch waste the Cricut forces on you... I mean I got 4 extra ornament blanks out of my acetate by doing that!
@@mwater_moon2865 that auto feature that's supposed to align everything to take up less space actually takes ups more space than the way I lay it out
I couldn’t have made this without this video. Thanks Jennifer!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much! I'm waiting for my cricut to come in but you covered everything I could have ever wanted to ask!
Glad it was helpful!
So much wasted vinyl :( I couldn’t bin it I’d save it for years hahaha
OMG Jennifer, you did such an amazing job. You have so much patience. I really appreciate that you did not edit anything and showed me how to fix some of the issues which could come up. You are such a real person. I appreciate your expertise and all the hard work. Thank you again. I look forward to trying to attempt to do a similar project. lol
Thank you so much!
Wow!! That was an awesome video! Great job explaining all the steps! It's definitely a lot of work! Thank you for sharing!! 🥰🥰🥰
Thank you soooo much🙂🙂 I’ve had all my wall decals in carts to order but you gave me inspiration to do my own, I didn’t know how but now I do‼️ you are so awesome 😊
YAY! Happy to help! Best of luck!
I love this video. You didn't talk over my head! Thanks, Jennifer!
Thank you so much Jennifer❤your channel! Really great video with good information.
What a FANTASTIC video! Thanks for showing all the tricks and tips and thoroughly explaining the steps. I can’t wait to try this!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for doing this video. I appreciate the time and effort you put into this, I can’t wait to make one. I would love to see how this is done with paper. ❤️
It was gorgeous. Thank you very much. I love it.
Wow, thank you for making this tutorial. You are a true professional. I could never teach like you because I would lose my cool. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
thank you for taking the time to share this video. i found it very interesting and have learned a lot from you.
Excellent video! I can't tell you how much I appreciate your videos. Thank you. Have a bless week.
Thank you so much for this video. I really appreciate that this project wasn't all planned out. I usually like tutorials to be perfect and the person to go through without delay but I loved that some of this was real time decision making. So helpful and nice to see that I'm not the only one who struggles to get the backing separated sometimes! lol Thanks again!
Glad it was helpful, Beth! Oh, yes, I sometimes struggle with crafting supplies just as much as everybody else does! 😂
Brilliant, comprehensive, and just what I wanted to see and know. Thanks!
Thank you.
How didn’t I know about moving items to another mat! I feel like there is so much I don’t know! Thank you Jennifer
Dear Jennifer! Thank you so much for this video! I’ve done smaller wall decor projects for kids but I’ve really wanted to make a larger one but didn’t know how! I want you to know that I know you worked hard on this long video so we could see all the steps. Your hard work it truly appreciated! Thank you so much!
Thanks so much!
Thank you for this video. I'm excited to do my daughters room now!😁☺️💗
You are so patient and explain everything so well. I am new to the Cricut world and your videos are teaching me so much. Thank you!
Great project! You just solved my upcoming large scale project (covering the surface of my metallic storage cabinet doors). Thank you.
Thanks for watching!😊🌻
Thank you sooooo much! My sister and I will
have to try this. ☺️
Thank you for such a great tutorial! I have seen this in the past, but your tutorial and explanation has been by far the best! Thank you so much for a great and wonderful video. Now I’m ready to try this with my Cricut Explorer One. 💕👏
Greg is so helpful and a great video photographer. Good job, you have patience as well!
Greg is amazingly helpful. I couldn't do any of this without him. :)
I was wondering how to do these larger projects and slicing to fit mat is genius! Thanks Jennifer.💕
Happy to help! :)
Thanks Jennifer. This was extremely helpful and well done. Hugs and blessings.

Glad it was helpful, Leshia! 😍

Awww, thank you for your kind words! 🥰
Awesome video! You always do such a great job! Thank you so much!
Thank you, Jennifer, as a beginner Cricut user I have had a tough time working with applying vinyl. Getting mixed up with when to mirror or when to turn vinyl facing mat. I appreciate this tutorial so much. thanks again.
Glad it was helpful, Sonja! Don't worry about getting vinyl information straight! It just takes a while, and experience working with it! This might help out, too! 😉🥰

Your videos are so clean, I bet your blooper reels would be great. THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO!
Keep watching my videos to the end, Jasmine! Every once in a while I'll sneak in a blooper as a reward for watching the whole thing!! 😍
Beautiful, great job! I am watching to learn how to make them
Awesome project. Interested in the paper version. Thanks much❣️
Woot woot! I gave a very large area in my kitchen! SO excited!!
You got this! 🌸
Wow how smart to figure that out! Thank you so much for sharing with the rest of us newbies.
You are so welcome!💗
Thank you for such an informative video! I always wondered how to make a larger project. Great Tips!
TFS! So mini helpful hints for a newbie like me. I too would love to see a design of large-scale in paper. God bless!
Your videos are always helpful and detailed. Every project I start, starts with one of your videos.
Glad you like them, Raven! 😍
I so appreciate this tutorial - your step-by-step-step instructions were a big help! Also made me feel less of a klutz when I saw you getting wrinkles and creases when you were placing the vinyl down so a big thank you as well for showing us the real rather than the ideal. Just a note, I don’t recall where I saw it but thanks to another tutorial, I started using kid’s snap bands to keep my vinyl and wrapping paper rolls closed - I can get them at the dollar store and I can see them easier after getting the vinyl and am now ready to put it away. It has been much easier than rubber bands for me.
I'm so glad you find the information helpful! Thanks for watching! 💗
These are so cute. Well done
My husband just bought me my first Cricut for Christmas. Though he bought it early and I know its coming I can't wait to get started. Your videos are so informative and I have learned so much before I have even opened the box.
That is awesome!
This is amazing and so helpful. I have no idea what I’m going to do with the skills this taught me but I know you just taught me something incredibly invaluable
I'm so glad!
OMG I kept thinking about the big mess I probably would have done. I am going to try it though. Thank you!
Thank you so much for such a wonderful tutorial. It’s great to see the potential mistakes that could happen. It’s also great to see how the vinyl sticks to the transfer tape when putting it on, glad to know it’s not just me. Beautiful project, thank you again for all of the knowledge that you share. I recommend you to several others in need.
You are so welcome! Thanks for watching!😊🌻
How were you so calm and getting these things lined up so straight so fast?! This gave me anxiety! I’d have ripped all of my vinyl, had a full blown tantrum, and lit my craft room on fire!
Your level of zen during this project is #goals. 🤣🤣🤣
Oh, no, Laura! I always want you to have fun with your crafting, not get stressed out with it! Remember that I have been doing this for a while. When I first started, it didn't come so easily! And, crafting being crafting, things sometimes now don't come so easily! When that happens, I just put things aside for a while and come back to it later when I've cooled down! We are all human! 😁😍
This lady is on point very professional. I am sure she's been doing it for a lifetime and now it's just getting easier for her with technology and so many ideas on the internet. I watch this channel for hours it is the go-to channel for the question she's a natural keep up the excellent work thank you.
Awwww...you are so sweet! Thank you so much!
I was glued to this video! Bravo!!!!
Glad you liked it!
Thank you so much for this video. It was very helpful. So easy to follow.
Your generous spirit is so inspiring! Thank you for sharing.
You are so welcome! Thank you!
You are so adorable in your apron 🥰 Thank you so much for this post. Ive been stressing over the large projects and was not sure how to tackle them.
You are so welcome! And thank you for your kind words!😁🥰
Oh my! You have so much patience. Beautiful project! Thanks so much!
Thank you so much!
Oh.My.Gosh! You are the most patient person on Earth. You sounded so relieved when you started applying the "sun spots."n "This is probably the easiest part of the whole project." I would have been turning the air blue well before that point.
Well, Brandy, there wasn't any reason to get upset! I knew I could eventually get it done! 😁😍
Thank you so much for this in-depth tutorial Jenifer 😊
You are so welcome!
Wow, I agree, you kept it real! Thank you! Wish I could do multiple thumbs up!
Thank you!
You are my new vinyl hero! Wow!
Jennifer, your videos had inspired me to reconnect with Cricut. I have one of the Pre-explore early models and liked it. But I couldn’t afford the time then. Then I retired and saw some of your videos. My husband was getting interested in 3-d printer/cnc routing/and laser machines. He found out how similar the programs were and got interested as well.
Thanks for the inspiration.
Wonderful! Thanks for sharing! 😃
Wow, that was amazing! You are truly inspiring and a fantastic teacher. Thank you for sharing your gift and talent.
You are so welcome! Thanks for watching! 😊🌻
