- Learn how to cut an image larger than 12" x 24" on Cricut and make a large cardstock cutout of a favorite character or image, such as Baby Yoda! Get the licensed design on Cricut Design Space at my affiliate link: shrsl.com/204gm
Use my larger than mat technique to cut any image on your Cricut, regardless of how big it is.
You can find the written tutorial at jennifermaker.com/cardstock-c...

MATERIALS LIST (contains my affiliate links):
* Cardstock in sizes from 8.5" x 11" up to 12" x 24" (I used this 12" x 24" cardstock, and this 12" x 12" cardstock): amzn.to/351vqMV
* Tape
* Tacky Glue
* Adhesive spray
* (Optional) Foam core (to make a rigid back and stand): amzn.to/2RxKpua
* (Optional) Craft knife (to make a rigid back and stand): amzn.to/2P23DpP
* StandardGrip cutting mat (either the 12" x 12" size or the 12" x 24" size)
* A way to cut the project (I used the amazing Cricut -- see shrsl.com/1dq4w )
* The licensed image from Disney, which you can get via Cricut Design Space at shrsl.com/204gm
Still mystified by how this works? You can totally cut this Disney character or any other large character or other image, on your Cricut cutting machine, even though the largest cutting mat you can use with a Cricut is 12" x 24". You even do it with a standard 12" x 12" cutting mat. And I'm going to show you the secret to doing it and cutting "off the mat" in this tutorial.
For this larger than mat project, you'll need some cardstock -- any size from 8.5 by 11 inches all the way up to 12 by 24 inches will work, though the bigger the paper, the less work for you. Weight doesn't matter a lot -- you can use 65 lb, 80 lb, or 110 lb, though the heavier the cardstock, the sturdier it will be. You also need a cutting mat, ether the 12 by 12 inch size or the bigger 12 by 24 inch size. And you need some tape, glue, and spray adhesive. If you want to make your cardstock cutout lean against a wall or even stand entirely on its own, you'll also want a couple of sheets of foam core and a craft knife to cut it with (you can't cut foam core on your Cricut because it's much too thick).
You also need a design that's appropriate for this technique, so one that is all or mostly solid with extra layers on top will work best. There's a lot of character designs over in Cricut Design Space that are ideal. Buying them through Cricut Design Space means you're using properly licensed images.
In this tutorial, I will show you where to find great designs for cardstock cutouts in Cricut Design Space, and then how to prepare the design for larger than mat cutting!
Step 1: Find an Image for a Large Cardstock Cutout
Find an image you want to make of a large cardstock cutout, such as the Disney design in Cricut Design Space, which is part of a Star Wars cartridge you can buy at shrsl.com/204gm
There are many other great options ideal for large cardstock cutouts in Cricut Design Space, too! You can also upload SVG cut files -- if you're not sure how to upload an SVG cut file to Cricut Design Space, watch this helpful video training series I made. If you're on an iPhone or iPad, here's how to download and upload SVG files to the Cricut Design Space app.
Step 2: Prepare Your Image for Cutting
This next step is the key to cutting a larger than mat image! You want to break apart the images that are too large into mat-sized pieces. Here's how you do that...
First, resize your image to the desired size. Be mindful of the size of your mat (either 12" x 12" or 12" x 24") and try to keep your image sizes in those increments. I enlarged my baby Yoda to be about 22" tall by 33" wide so it would fit within the 12" increments.

@@JenniferMaker im having trouble slicing may you give me any tips
Oh my gosh, I had never seen a tutorial by you, but I started searching for Cricut tutorials because my daughter gifted me a Cricut Explore air 2 for Christmas and I am so Happy I found you!! You are such a professional, your instructions are concise and to the point. I am hooked. I am sort of new to Cricut, I am a bit intimidated by it, but you made it seem so easy!
,
YAY! Congrats on your new Cricut! Welcome to my channel! Happy to have you here! Lots of free tutorials and files on my blog as well! www.jennifermaker.com :-)
This is so handy. I’ve been trying to figure out how to do big quilt appliqué pieces and this should save me some fancy cutting! Thank you.
Oh absolutely! Happy to help! :)
Wow!! Thanks so much Jennifer!!
Thanks for being here Jodi! :)
love love love your videos. You have such a great way of explaining things ( and without annoying music or mouse clicking in the background ) Thank you so much for this video!
Awww, Christine, thank you so much! People have their different preferences - I'm happy you chose me!😁
When you use the slice tool for 3 pieces, you only actually need to slice 2x - preferably the two ends. the middle is already sliced and contains ALL of the remainder. You don’t have to worry about “eyeballing” the alignment for overlap.
Awesome! Thanks for the suggestion!
On that note, you can do the middle slice, so you only have to do it once.
Love it! Best demonstration ever!
Thank you Sonia!
You are amazing! I’m a Paraprofessional and required to make bulletin boards but I’ve been cutting things by hand even though I have a Cricut because I just didn’t understand. Now, thanks to you, I finally get it!
Yay! You're going to rock those bulletin boards!
Thank you, this was a FANTASTIC tutorial! specially the foamboard stand up. I'm making my Xmas cards into a door hanger. again thanks.
Thanks so much! Best of luck with your door hanger!
My son’s birthday is coming up. This video is perfect. Not the Yoda, though... I need Teen Titans Go products!
Perfect! The possibilities are endless, just find the Teen Titans Go images and follow this tutorial to lay out your design. Best of luck! :)

I need to invest in some more cardstock so I can make some characters of my own.
Can't wait to see what you create! #jennifermaker. :)
I want to do layer numbers do you have a video.
Hi there! At this moment we don't have a video about layering numbers, however, we do have a video about how to layer iron-on vinyl which you might find helpful here-jennifermaker.com/layer-iron-on-vinyl-cricut-tote-bag/ 😊
You are also more than welcome to request a project here- Jennifermaker.com/projectrequests :)
I am requesting it. Please help me.
Great information! My granddaughter's birthday is in January, & I will be making an oversized table centerpiece, now that I know how to do it! Thank you so much, Jennifer - you are amazing!
Yay! I'm so glad I was able to help you out and that you've got it figured out! My goal is always to teach others how to accomplish their crafting goals and craft a life they love! ❣️
Wow! Love the size!
Lil' baby Yoda is HUGE! :)
That large cutout you have is of Master Yoda, not The Child (Baby Yoda), as seen by the walking stick and the cloak. :)
True...thanks for the correction! :-) May the force be with you.
And may the force be with you 😊
Someone gonna tell her that’s not baby Yoda 🤣 good tutorial though thanks
Haha!
Who cares?
Love it! Can’t wait to try an oversized image
Yay! Endless possibilities!
Thank you for this! I’m needing some for my daughters birthday!!
YAY! Best of luck!

SO straightforward and helpful. Thanks a mill!
Glad it was helpful!
I finally understand how this is done! Thank you for all you do - I am a newbie and it seems like the more videos I watched, the more confused I became. But you explain things so well, in step by step process, that I can follow what you are doing. Thank you so much for all your help!
Well I am happy you found me and are finding my videos helpful, Lynn! Will you be making a larger than mat project anytime soon? :)
Jennifer Maker - Oh, no! I just got my Cricut on Saturday, but unfortunately haven't gotten the box that contains all the materials yet. So I've just been able to do the intro. project. But I did an upsize project when I was in design school, where I took a postcard I had created and turned it into a wall mural. It involved doing basically the same things you talked about, but using a copy machine. But until I watched this video, I didn't understand how people made things larger than their mats. And I watched several people because I was trying to figure it out, just because I was curious. Some of them talked about having to do calculations and all sorts of stuff that frightened me. But you are the one who, once again, has made total sense! I just wanted to let you know what a God send you have been, and how very much I appreciate you!
@@MsLynnabelle Well, you are very sweet, Lynn! I'm so happy you're finding my videos helpful!

I had no idea that Cricket Design Space did slices. Thanks, Jennifer.
I would try to slice out the ears so I could cut the head and the ears, and so on to eliminate weird lines, but this is a great quick way to do it!
Awesome! Thank you so much for watching! 😊🌻
