If I were to use a screw on filter, like a CPL, would this be accessible BEHIND the matte box? This is important because there's no point in having to put my hand inside the matte box every time I want to adjust the filter.
I dunno if I need the follow focus but it definitely looks like it has its uses! Especially with giving more access to the focus ring. Loved that intro!
I love follow focus, I can do it all day long, it's a ton of fun and very satisfying when you hit the spot. Yes, being able to really have control over the focus ring is a huge plus instead of just turning the ring handheld.
Nice in depth review. I found your video searching for "Mini Matte Box", as I'm in the market for such. It was nice that you still have my old CINEcrank and CINEwhip that I manufactured from my shoot35 days! :) Yes the company unfortunately folded due to brexit and covid, but nice to see people still using my old products! :)
I got both matte box and follow focus from Smallrig a month or so ago, thanks for the tip about the gear bands. I must admit I got a shock when I looked into getting some filters for the matte box though. Maybe next year.
@@PhillipSkraba I don't suppose you've got any recommendations for lower cost NDs? Off-topic, I grew up working class in the UK and now live in Australia, people here think I "talk posh" or have a "news announcer" voice. What do your locals think of you?
Not really, no. If I'm spending that kind of money anyway, it's worth going for good quality glass, otherwise you could get some nasty side effects and be disappointed with the money spent. $200 is the normal price for a 4x5.65 filter, maybe a little more.
Great review, I bought this same model over 12 months ago. To my shame have never set it up, mainly due to the run n gun style of shooting that I usually do. Now that I have a SIRUI S35 Anamorphic lens on my S5, it is time to rig up! Thanks for the nudge👍
how would you recommend using this matte box w a variable nd? / how does that work? would u remove the variable nd and screw it on to the end of the matte box? is it wise to remove a uv filter from the lens and install the matte box first, and then put the uv filter on the end or the variable nd on the end? looks cool. love smallrig. got their dark olive cage / handle for the sony a73 and lookin to start testing using matte boxes on the sony fx3
I still have the Shoot 35 Cine Focus pro, it was and still is an amazing follow focus for the money! The guy who made them also fixed it once for me and didn’t charge me a penny, as you say I don’t think they still sell stuff unfortunately. Can you change the direction on this follow focus, I like to use my follow focus reversed is this possible?
The Shoot35 is what I have too, and it is the mutts nuts. The SmallRig is great, and it gets you where you need to go, but the Shoot35 is just luxury. I have the original one before the Pro or Pro 2, I bought it in 2007 or 2008, and it’s as smooth today as it was then. My french flag on my matte box broke a few years back so that’s a bummer. I’ve never reversed my follow focus, that would mess me up, so I haven’t given that a 2nd thought, I’ll look into it.

That really depends on what kind of light you're working with, if it's daylight, a top flag usually covers you, no pun intended, if it's studio lighting you might need side flags to block out any unwanted lights.

Really? What lens? If that is certain type of lens that twists whilst focusing then then only option is a set of rails and baseplate to hold the matte box.
Sure, the AF will work with the matte box, it's really designed just to keep pesky light rays out, if that's what you're aiming to eliminate that is, and look a little more "pro" for the clients.
I've had both of these for about 5 months give or take, and two things to note 1. its a ball ache trying to buy another matte box ring if you have 2 lens of the same size ie my Tamrons are 67mm 2. The movalbe stop level on my focus snapped (only bad desgined part of the kit) and they dont make spares of that part. I use mine maily for competitions where my friends compete and that's mainly in brightly lite sports venues, so the matte box is a must to stop flair, and the focus allows me to adjust as needed for different mats where the fights are on.
Oh forgot to add I use the Tilta Continuous Lens Rings as they are so much better then the smallrig ones, as they are more tight and stretchy, whereas the smallrig one'd are a bit loose.
I picked up all the adapter rings I could straight away, I knew I’d not want to bother later. I’d ask SmallRig to replace the unit in your case Phillis!
Reason #3 for matte box: clients take you 27% more seriously when you’re sporting a matte box. Scientists baffled.
Damn right 🤘🏻

Yes, cine filters are expensive, especially if you go for Tiffen or Schneider. Cine Packs have very good prices and excellent quality.

do you think that the new version of the focus from edelkrone is worth considering?
I think so, they make great stuff. I am feeling they are evolving faster than what money I have available in my pocket though 😂
Interesting setup, I like it.
How do you use a ND filter with the streak filter and the matte box?
you’d use the circular nd filter on the inside and the rectangular streak filter on the outside
Great review as always Phillip 🔥
Thank You!
SmallRig recently came out with two new Mini Matte Box versions: "Lite" and "Pro". A three-way comparison would be nice. ;)
From what I’ve seen it seems identical just with side flags, if you feel you need them, go for the 3 way. I feel the top flag version does all I need.

Hello, thank you. Is there a SmallRig VND rectangular filter available for this matte box? Best
An ND filter, sure, but not a VND. I don't think SmallRig make filters, and if they did I'd have a hard time trusting them.

Hi did you tried wide angle or fish lens lenses for matte box???
What you think it is possible use???
Thank you for your time
I've been down to 16mm, which is okay, anything below is asking for trouble.
Hi, are “side flags” important? Concerned this matte box doesn’t include them.

You’r welcome!
Hi, where can I purchase the adapter rings? I need the 77mm-95mm. I can not find it unless I buy the mini matt box again.
I guess either Aliexpress or the SmallRig website.
So the circular filter needs to be what size? 95mm?
it can be any size as long as there is a size up thing to make it fit correctly
Could this rig also fit on a gimbal (rs2) without any problems?
It’s not really a rig made for the RS2, the matte box is fine though.
@@PhillipSkraba and the mini follow focus? Is that too big for a gimbal? Because i want to make a similar rig, but still want to use the RS2
Well, a manual follow focus for a gimbal is a little counter-productive, it would be advantageous to pick up the DJI follow focus for the RS2.
Great video, and great product info!
Thanks Bob!

Really? What lens? If that is certain type of lens that twists whilst focusing then then only option is a set of rails and baseplate to hold the matte box.
Does the autofocus work with a matte box? Or the matte box is designed to work with manual focus?

Some of it, much like with Ulanzi, but a lot of it is well made and solid, especially for the price you're paying.
