    nice video, thank you.
    And if you want to use old lenses like the Helios or Takumar, then you can't attach the matte box because the lenses are too small and have no thread?
    And what do you do with zoom lenses, they won't work either, or can the box only be attached using rods?
    And I think you can use all filters, Tiffen for example, and not just your own small rig filters, right?
    I would like to buy a box, but I'm not sure whether it should be this one or a number more expensive.

    Nice review. One thing about this matte box: it's almost impossible to attach the barn door tray to another filter tray with the matte box on the camera. It's just to tight to slide into position properly. It renders the matte box much less useful in the field.
    I doubt it'd be that hard to design this with simple drop in filter trays like many matte boxes.
    Do you have any suggestions for dealing with this problem?

    Hi guys, I just ordered a Laowa 7,5mm for my Gh5, also owning a sirui 35mm anamorphic. The sirui has a 67mm diameter and the laowa will have 46mm. Do you think if i set up the laowa with a 46-67mm step up ring and then add the included 67-92mm step up ring to it, will it lose rigidity? The sirui is an amazing anamorphic lens but with some shots the lens flare ruin the shot and the laowa also has quite some light leaks being a wide angle, so I've been looking through all budget matte box options and this is the only one that would suit my needs. Thank you!

    Is this a joke? A matte box with gaps this big between the French flag / side flags and the main box (seen very clearly at 3:35 shot) ? Do they (and you) even understand what the purpose of the matte box is? How can something like that be ever called “fantastic” ???

    • @CaseyPreston
      @CaseyPreston 2 года назад +2

      The only gap is a sliver between the French flag and the side flags. It is pretty small and at a pretty extreme angle. It could easily be covered with a bit of gaff if need be. For the price, it is pretty fantastic and I don't think you could find anything lighter for handheld or gimbal work.

    • @deepseadiver8191
      @deepseadiver8191 2 года назад

      @@CaseyPreston Do you have eyes? Clearly visible that the side flags and French flag / eyebrow has gaps not only between them but also between the actual matte box. It is visible in several angles in this video, I also had a chance to check out this “matte box” in person and saw it. Also, ridiculously, unlike in proper matte boxes the angle of the top of the side flags is not adjustable but instead the angle of the sides of the French flag. This is embarrassing to design a matte box like this. In order to fit properly and shade the lens the side flags need to have adjustable top angle for the French flag to leave no gap depending on lens angle (the French flag moves up and down). Here they put some ridiculous extensions which are completely unnecessary, the french flag should simply be wider and the hinged extensions should be on the side flags. SmallRig makes lots of look-a-like items for consumers who have no idea what given item’s actual function is and look for things that just looks serious. I guess it’s actually designed for you.

    • @CaseyPreston
      @CaseyPreston 2 года назад +2

      @@deepseadiver8191 this argument is dumb. I own a couple of these matte boxes and an Arri 4x5 LMB. The Smallrig makes all kinds of sacrifices to be small, light and cheap. Half the time I don’t even use the side flags. Also the gaps between the flags and the matte box don’t matter. The angle of the light can’t hit the front glass of the lens or the filter through those gaps.

    • @deepseadiver8191
      @deepseadiver8191 2 года назад

      @@CaseyPreston You simply don’t have enough experience. There are cases when this is extremely important, such as, in example, when filming through windows. You’ll have a leak reducing contrast in the reflection, sometime you’ll even immediately recognize the matte box shape. Same goes for when dealing with smoke, haze in front of the lens. Yes, typically requires additional rigging anyway to mitigate these issues but my point is that for the matte box to not follow such very basic design principle is just very telling. You’d be surprised how such light coming through those gaps can bounce off of the inner sides of the flags in some situations when they have to be adjusted in a way that angles them inward toward the lens axis (long lens). Btw, adjusting the french flag to be angled this way is not even possible in this design without removing the side flags completely or angling them away from the lens axis. I have more things to say about it that prove this “matte box” is a complete joke but will not waste my time. Not the first time SmallRig shows they have very little knowledge about the industry and its needs, there were cases where they posted official pictures of their products on their website mounted backwards or upside down on cameras!

    • @CaseyPreston
      @CaseyPreston 2 года назад +2

      @@deepseadiver8191 you forgot that it also doesn’t include a swing away mount, tilt, mounting points for distance devices, rotatable tray, mattes, donuts, and it can’t be used on any full size cinema lens since it is only 95mm.
      It is a cheap filter holder that will generally keep the sun and lights off of your lens and filter. And it is compact and light enough to toss in a spare pouch in your case in case you need it. For anything else, I will bring out my Arri 4x5 which is 20x heavier and more expensive. Smallrig’s business model is to flood the market with relatively cheap and high quality small camera equipment. If it doesn’t fit your needs, don’t buy it. I would recommend the Arri 4x5. Buy that instead.
