      They are also just straight up shorting us too. (Asking the same price for not the expected/agreed upon amount). It's insane. Has anyone else noticed "shrinkflation"? I thought i was losing my mind because everytime i'd buy something the package would stay the same size(sometimes) but the product would be smaller. Or the whole package with the product just shrinks, for the same price, even claiming the same thing like, "family size" etc. Fucking insane.

      See all the stuff he mentions that gets cut with additives is a lot cheaper than the whole product. Like I’m not gonna disagree but not everyone can afford proper Parmesan because it’s 60 dollars a kilo, and pre shredded cheese needs the starch to stay separated or else it clumps up so any shredded cheese you buy shredded has starch added. This practice is done with goods other than foods like natural gas and fuels, it’s by far not the worst thing companies do.

    Luckily I live in Finland. The food regulations are strict to the point of frustrating here, but at least when you buy black pepper, grounded or whole, from a Finnish condiments firm, you know that it's what it says on the label.

    • @starfuryduck3446
      @starfuryduck3446 5 месяцев назад +17

      Yes but what is being mentioned here in the video is the "may contain traces of" part of the label. Which oftentimes doesn't mean that there is sand of dirt in it. But that there is a possibility of it being there, mainly to avoid lawsuits. You cannot guarantee that every single product is 100% without any of these materials, heck most of our sea life contains microplastics. I'm sure that in Finland they also contain those "may contain traces of" part. And if someone thinks that it is possible to have 100% clean products then oh boy have you never entered a factory in your life. Also cellulose is an anti binding agent for parmesan. So it's required in the product.

    • @NiVoldiza
      @NiVoldiza 5 месяцев назад +41

      @@starfuryduck3446 yup, sure, but in the video he says that cheaper pepper might be ground up seeds that are just flavoured with spice oil. That doesn't happen here. "May contain traces of..." is not the same, as a totally fake product. And no, this video was not just about the mention of "may contain traces of...". It was about _fake pepper_ .

    • @coin5207
      @coin5207 5 месяцев назад +20

      @starfuryduck3446 these are two completely different things. May contain traces of is something they have to put when e.g. two products are made in the same factory and small traces of one might make it into some batches of the other which is important when working with allergens that may harm people. It is not used when something is intentionally added to the product. EU food regulations are very strict, which is why many American products are just not sold here. They certainly wouldn't let you add 8% wood pulp to your parmesan. And no cellulose is quite obviously _not_ required to be in there, it's cheese not a plant based product. In Italy it is actually prohibited by law to add additives like this to authentic parmesan.

If it doesn’t hurt us, there’s a cost/benefit analysis we have to do between how much that pepper will cost you, the consumer, if a company has to be absolutely, 100% sure there are NO twig remnants ground with the pepper corns. It’s not like they are willingly adding twigs to your pepper. They just aren’t taking as much time to filter out the tiny parts like they do with whole pepper corns - where you would notice them. Does it hurt anyone? No. Does it make pepper cheap enough for everyone to buy? Yes. Can you buy whole peppercorns if you want to? Go for it. If it grosses you out to think about bugs or plant matter in your processed food, you’re definitely going to want to consider making everything from scratch. There’s no other way around it. People wouldn’t be able to afford food that was 100% filler or contaminant free. We just wouldn’t. Then processed food would just be for rich people and the rest of us would be growing our own again. Cellulose also constitutes cotton fiber, plenty of fruit skins, leafy vegetables, and a ton of other things. It's the primary component of plant cell walls. Anything plant based will have some amount of it. Calling it "wood pulp" is somewhat reductionist.
    In any case, it functions as an anti-caking agent. It's added to keep the ground parmesan ground. There's a market for it.
    That said, I do agree that customers should get whole coffee beans and whole peppercorns. There really is a dramatic difference in flavor and quality.

    And powdered sugar (icing sugar) contains starch like corn flour. Why?
    It’s because to prevent them from clumping. The finer the grind, the easier it is to absorb humidity and clump together.
    This is the same for the other products too. Try pulverising parmesan and see if you can reach the powdered stage without it becoming a dough. Same with Sugar.

      how strange then how we can buy powdered sugar and grated parmegiano with no additives in Europe and they are just fine. Apples, banana, orange, avacado, watermelon, onion, etc
    Whole cuts of steak, chicken, pork, fish, etc
    While its difficult to do this consistently, try to opt for the whole version than the processed when given the choice.

    Thank you. Parmesan cheese, whether grated or in whole pieces, can contribute to constipation. Similarly, whether coffee is ground or whole bean, it, along with cocoa/chocolate, can be a primary factor in reducing calcium levels in the body. Calcium aids in muscle contraction, a fact often overlooked by many, including the heart, which is also a muscle.

I have to get my heart rate brought down in hospital when they cause me too much stress so calcium is probably very important for me.
      In regards to cheese and constipation the sort of cheese I buy has the opposite effect. It is goats cheese in a glass jar in a liquid with peppercorns and herbs. I don't suffer from constipation but I used to and I wish I had known about it then it seems to put a nice lining on your stomach and helps everything come out very smoothly!!! It also makes my skin feel very silky and smooth and yet I'm 79. I only started to have it because a famous doctor on RUclips recommended it. All the shit they sell in stores..the detergent, the body washes, the food, the oils, the hfcs, the fake colorings, the fake additives, the one almond in the fake almond milk, the fake oat milk that’s full of oil, the keto camp vs the carnivore camp vs the vegan camp vs the fruitarian camp, this carb is bad vs this carb is okay, you need fiber and then you don’t need fiber. Bread is bad but keto bread is good, keto bread is bad but Dave’s whole grain bread is good despite having canola oil. The freakin pesticides they spray on vegetables and the certain pesticides allowed on organic crops of vegetables and fruit. The hormones in meat and dairy and eggs..shit gets exhausting to keep up with. Literally creates stress and worry when they say worry and stress kills us so either way you’re fucked.
    Not to mention the shit they spray in the air, the poison we breathe in every day.
    I’m over it. We all live and die at our appointed times by God. The day we are born isn’t picked by our parents or us, neither is the day we die picked by ourselves or loved ones. It was picked by God.
    Nothing wrong with taking care of yourself and trying to find the best diet for yourself and be healthy but after awhile all these influencers just steal a sense of peace and we forget to follow our own instinct that’s supposed to lead us to the right things for us personally
    It’s fucking depressing and exhausting. All these Bobby parish like influencers and all these “I once was a doctor but now I’m just a doctor with a podcast on RUclips” kind of people are great and have great insight but after awhile and at the end of the day we are all just trying to survive and inflation doesn’t make it easier for us all. And at the end of the day we just want to live and not be paranoid about all this shit these influencers are trying to warn us about and we all end up dying anyways. Just listen to your gut instinct it’s there for a reason and you’ll know what’s okay for you personally and it’s much more peaceful that way.
    Not to mention the hate in the keto and carnivore and vegan and other diets towards one another. It’s stupid. They all act like a religion. It’s like Christianity against Catholics and them against Muslims and other religions.
