I would argue that this is Sinatra's finest recording. Sinatra was riding his third wave of popularity when he recorded this in 1965. He could work with the best musicians, orchestrators, and arrangers, Gordon Jenkins leading the orchestra here. "It Was A Very Good Year" is an excellent tune and lyric--perfectly suited to Sinatra's ballad style. Many years ago, a local radio DJ where I lived recounted that he was in the studio control room when this was recorded. At the end of the tune, everyone in the control room immediately knew that Sinatra had "nailed it" and that it would be a big hit--and it was, and still is.
He had sociology many but this is gold
I've loved that song since, forever. I was 18 yrs old when it came out. And now, I'm in the winter of my years, maybe late fall. It's a song that makes you remember, no matter if you lived it or not. Be 73 tomorrow.

I started crying when " the Chairman of the board" started to sing about the Autumn of the years. I'm at or near that point now. Thinking of what I messed up. But, I try to put Life into perspective.

I can honestly state that in the twenty trillion comments I've read-spanning all manner of subjects-this is the first to genuinely warm my soul. I was very close to tearing up. Thank you. ♥
True story: My mom passed, and I was driving her car, picking up lunch for my wife and me as we began cleaning out her house. I put on the radio for distraction, just to stop thinking. Well, rather than the radio, the CD player came on. It started playing Sinatra's "My Way", which those who know, is an end-of-life reflective song which he recorded toward the end of his career. The song didn't start at the beginning, and I beat myself up to this day because I don't recall which verse he was singing when it started playing. But I know my mom was telling me don't feel bad for her, she lived her life, enjoyed her life, and I needed to do the same. The last advice she gave me - from the other side.
Sinatra was an absolute perfectionist in the recording studio. He demanded perfect tone and phrasing from himself and the same from his arrangers, musicians, engineers. Graham Nash of Crosby Stills & Nash gave an interview where he said he got into rock music to push aside the music of Sinatra. But years later he watched a documentary of Frank in the recording studio and was in absolute awe of Sinatra's genius and perfectionism.

Frank was the ultimate pro and a true connoisseur of the music. He practiced his singing, he could read musical scores, and he took no BS.
he couldn't read sheet music. he did it all by ear. when he turned the sheet over he was keeping the lyrics in front of him.
The older I get (I'm in my 50's) the more this song seems relevant to me and i must confess i cannot watch it without my eyes getting a little bit moist. Written by Ervin Drake I do think it's one of the most beautiful songs ever written.

Thank you for playing my favorite video of my favorite Frank Sinatra song. It IS jarring to see him go from singing with so much emotion to flipping the switch back to professional singer asking about the recording details like length of song. But he was just that good, to make the listener feel the emotions of the song whether or not he was feeling it himself.

I really loved, ‘Love’s been Good To Me,’ by Frank.
Old school indeed! This was literally my daddy's music, as he played trumpet with big bands before WW2 and ran restaurants after. The Rat Pack were regulars at all his places, his pals. I came along a bit late to remember meeting some of them, but there were stories. But that, India, is one of the deepest rabbit holes you will ever find, following the Chairman of the Board into all the connections. Do enjoy the songs and acting. Dude was extraordinarily talented, which is how he made it look so danged easy!

One of my favorite songs. My son, who is now 32, loved this song in his late teenage years. He said to me one day, "When I am 17, maybe it will happen to me." Now he is almost 35 and I am 60. The autumn of my years. Love Frank! Summer Wind and New York New York are great. Anything he dies us great.

I started listening to Sinatra in 1964, at age 12. I view this album as a masterpiece, as it touches the emotions in a way that few other singers of his generation could replicate. I've been listening to roughly 30 Sinatra recording sessions in which it became very evident to me that he out much work into each recording. He did repeated takes until he got the song where he wanted it. He also brought humor to the sessions and the musicians clearly liked him and respected what he was trying to do. So, when we listen to a Sinatra album cut, we might not often realize just how much work went into the song. He often made suggestions to the arrangers at these sessions, especially about tempo, resulting in multiple takes. He was dedicated to producing quality music and September of my Years was simply brilliant. The Gordon Jenkins arrangements were perfect.

Frank is brilliant. This one of my favorite songs, of any genre, any artist, any era. Frank just seems to tell a story with every song he sings. I learned Frank’s music from my dad, who has passed away. He gave me his collection of Frank’s vinyl, which I listen to a lot. ❤❤

wheelinthesky300 you are correct chronologically. I was referring to being the biggest stars in the world in their own careers. Though Sinatra was still cranking out hits late into the 1960s. Do be do be do.
Sinatra outlasted both Elvis and the Beatles. The latter two had careers that spanned only a half decade in terms of their best and most popular work. Sinatra had his first #1 hit in the early 1940's and his last #1 in the early 1970's.

It is amazing to watch him. He can sing with all that emotion and give you the feeling through the song then just switch it off when he isn't singing. Even in the pauses in the song for the music. He doesn't have to work on it.

When I grew up in the 50s I would hear Frank's music throughout the house my uncle's would play Frank's albums while he shaved using magic shave ,it really stanked up the house but I grew up on Frank's music and movies my favorite robin and the 7 hoods great movie thanks for the memories 😊❤
Just really segments of his life. When he was 17 thinking about having fun with the ladies...at 21 actually having fun with the ladies. At 35 he is in the middle of his life, and now he 's probably 65 looking back at his life.. And those years...were very good years. And now, he is in the autumn of his life ,,,getting towards the end of his life. My all time favorite song by Frank Sinatra,,,,believe it or not....my father could sing..and sang just like him,,kid you not ,,back in the 60's he sang at my uncle and aunts wedding.

If you like this, you really should hear him sing “One for my Baby”. And in this case the “live” videos are probably better than the studio version.
When this guy was ON he was untouchable. There was a reason that women screamed and fainted when he debuted.
I remember near the end of his life people would make fun of him when he would forget lyrics but, the guy is a legend and I respect him.
Sinatra did record the same songs at different stages of his life this being one of them. There is another song called "All or Nothing at All" which he sings in a very morose, sad way. Sinatra had the reputation of being a womanizer and was involved with Ava Gardner who supposedly taught him a lesson by walking out on him which got him to record another version of All or Nothing at All.

There is a story told by a comedian - I don’t remember who - who was at a performance when Frank forgot the lyrics of a song. As Frank faltered, someone in the audience stood up and yelled, “We love you, Frank!” It was enough for Frank to gather himself, and the story goes that he finished the song and the concert flawlessly.

Never was a big Sinatra fan. Though huge jazz connoisseur. But this song was one I could relate to when I was young. 17 teen was one of my best years in life 67 summer of love.
Everyone is different but I'm a little surprised that you said that you're not a huge Sinatra fan yet a jazz connoisseur.
Although strictly speaking Sinatra wasn't a jazz singer, his ability to swing prodigiously, superb phrasing and his command and artistry in other essential aspects that make jazz great generally mean many jazz fans and in particularly musicians are great admirers of Sinatra.
Miles Davis famously said "if you want to learn how to phrase a melody, listen to Sinatra". Lester Young was another big fan of Sinatra.
I'm a saxophonist that has worked in various musical forms throughout my career , Jazz being the one that, although not the most financially rewarding, the idiom that I by far find the most personal and gives me the most fulfilling experience.
Anyway just a few thoughts and again music is a totally subjective art form and we all respond individually to various forms and performances.
I hope you know just how FAMOUS he was in his day !Also was a great actor! Made many movies ! He was known for the way he would phrase the words when he sang !
This has always been one of my favorite Sinatra songs. Recording technology had developed to the point that artists could over-dub and "correct" things in records without having to go back and re-record a whole song. Also, instrumental tracks could be recorded and then voices over-dubbed. That's not the way Sinatra did it. He always recorded in the studio as though it were live, with the orchestra present. No overdubbing. If there was a problem in the performance, the whole song was done again from the beginning. That didn't happen often, as I understand. Sinatra, himself, was a professional and a perfectionist. And he only hired the best musicians.
This is magical music. Pure voice and instruments. How easy it was and Frank Sinatra was amazing then. I grew up listening to him.

my way and new york new york get all the juice from late in his career, but i've always thought this was his best song he ever recorded. the sense of longing, nostalgia, the picture he paints and the recognition that he is mortal are powerful.....and the older you get--i'm 71--the more meaning it has.

Frank was the man. I had the pleasure of seeing him live in the mid-late 1980's in Reno. This was a real surprise, India, you checking out 'Ol Blue Eyes. I recommend, Fly Me to the Moon, The Best is Yet to Come, My Way, Come Fly with Me, One for My Baby, , and of course - New York, New York...the list goes on and on. He's a legend. That was a great description and I so love seeing your emotional reaction to this music....which, btw - didn't sound half as good back then on our tinny little radios. Now that I can rehear these songs on terrific speakers there is so much more to his voice and the orchestra than I ever knew. Appreciated.
This is my favorite Sinatra song. I would listen to this in the basement sitting on top of the dryer waiting for my clothes to finish washing. I would sing along loudly. I was like 10 years old.
