  • Canada Goose jackets are made to withstand the coldest places on earth, and the company has a brand history to back it up. CEO Dani Reiss used that history when he turned the company into what it is today.
Following is a transcript of the video:
Narrator: This jacket has been banned from a UK high school. Why? An effort to poverty-proof the school environment. Shielding low-income students from feeling bad about not having a pricey coat. Canada Goose jackets cost anywhere from $500 to $1,500, and they're not just popular in English high schools. They're everywhere. How did these coats get so popular? And why are they so expensive?
Pamela Danziger: Canada Goose started out as a working-class brand, and it was really focused on the working-class laborers up in Canada.
Narrator: Canada Goose was founded in 1957 by Sam Tick in a warehouse in Toronto, and it was originally called Metro Sportswear. By the '80s, people were sporting the company's jackets in the coldest places on Earth. Its expedition parka became standard-issue at Antarctica's McMurdo Station, where the scientists nicknamed it "Big Red." And in 1982, one of the company's jackets made it to the top of Mt. Everest on the back of Laurie Skreslet, the first Canadian to summit the mountain.
Susan Fournier: So we're always trying to find the authentic in a saturated world that's kinda contaminated by materialism. You get those credentials through the craftsmanship. You also get it through a history of the brand, where it's born of experiences that were actually real that then became products.
Narrator: So what do Canada Goose jackets have that others don't? The company uses high-quality Canadian Hutterite down, recognized as one of the highest quality in the world. The company claims its animal fur trim disrupts air flow and protects exposed skin against frostbite. In fact, Canada Goose says its jackets can withstand temperatures as low as -30° Celsius. And that sort of quality doesn't come cheap. Western coyote fur, similar to what Canada Goose uses, is estimated to cost $104.
Danziger: People need that kind of performance, that kind of functional quality in their day-to-day lives, and it's unusual to see such a brand transform into a luxury brand, but Canada Goose has been very successful at making that transition.
Narrator: By the turn of the millennia, the company got a new CEO who would revolutionize the name "Canada Goose" into the luxury brand we know today. In 2001, Sam Tick's grandson, Dani Reiss, was named as the company's president and CEO. He started expanding the brand in Stockholm. His commitment to quality limited supply, but that only increased demand. The brand spread throughout Europe, mainly on word of mouth. Then Reiss targeted America. His parkas became the unofficial uniform for cold-weather film crews, and in 2004, the coats made it in front of the camera. Reiss continued to market through the silver screen, sponsoring film festivals in cold places like the Berlin Film Festival and Sundance. And its US exposure hit a new high in 2013 when Kate Upton donned a Canada Goose parka on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
Fournier: Cultural marketing is that the products are part of the culture, and the advertising is actually the products just living lives with the people who use it.
Danziger: Through that association, they really raised their stature, and again that's an interesting, authentic way that Canada Goose made its entrance into the luxury market.
Narrator: There has been some backlash though. PETA has protested against the company's production methods and pushed the company to use a cruelty-free alternative. Despite the protests, the company is on the upswing. At the end of 2013, Reiss sold a majority stake in the company to Bain Capital, which allowed the company to expand manufacturing in Toronto and Winnipeg and eventually open a store in New York City. Its expansion continued for four years, and in 2017, the company went public. On its first day of trading, the company's stock jumped 25%, and it's continued to rise through most of 2018. The company's revenue has increased from CAN$291 million in 2015 to CAN$591 million in 2018, a 77% increase.

It's definitely quality because it's a jacket that keeps you warm in the coldest places.
But the majority has one just as a status symbol because they don't even live in places where it gets cold. I can imagine people in Canada, Scandinavia and Siberia have a Canada goose jacket , but in Europe and main parts of the USA don't really need it. If a brand would change their price of a jacket from €50 to €500 people would be more eager to buy one. To show of that they are "successful" in life.

In terms of waterproofing, similiar brands provide comparable quality to CG. Broken Wizards Arcteryx is more specialized in skiing and alpine climbing, while Canada Goose is built to withstand more severe temperatures comfortably but probably isn’t as durable under abrasion or activity. Both are obviously high quality products that come at a premium but I think they have slightly different niches. Of course to many people that wear them in the city just because they are comfortable it doesn’t really matter which one they buy but for people that need a specialized product to reliably suit their needs they would probably go to the respective brands.

I bought a gray bomber goose Jacket 11 years ago. I still wear it but now has some signs of wear on the inner sleeves and has tiny holes from the constant rubbing over the years. At the time, I think I paid $650 or so? I think it was well worth the money and it is still super warm and comfy. The fur has held up and still looks brand new. The outer liner is not as water repellant anymore but I guess that could be solved with some silicone spray? I purchased 2 other winter jackets in the last couple years from other canadian brands (that I found out after that they make their stuff in China and sell their jackets for x2 the price I originally paid for my Goose bomber) thinking they would be just as good...they are not. I have a rudsak and a macage winter coat, both parkas and I regret spending the money on them. I thought all jackets with fur tips and down would perform the same...let me tell you, they do not. If I could do it all over again, I would have just bought 1 other goose jacket, parka version and not waste the money on the other 2 winter parkas I purchased...these other two are not going to last as I can already see signs of wear on them and they do not keep me warm like my 11 year Goose bomber does. I wanted a style change and that was the main reason I got the other 2 jackets, but in hindsight, performance, durability and reliability of canada goose is on another level compared to the other jackets in the same price bracket...they price their stuff to compete with Goose but are not tried and tested like Goose and just can't realy even compare. Unless all you want is to be fashionable then by all means. Otherwise don't waste money on other trendy brands. Just get a Goose.

I find canada goose in the similar vein to a brand like rolex, it is understated, full of quality and worth the money...to people with money. Of course people seeking just value will never get it, but when the hipsters have moved on from canada goose, it will still be a staple good 20 years later cause it's base proposition of being a tremendous cold weather jacket is still valid.
I have a jacket I bought 7 years ago and it is as good as the day I bought it.

I use to have some nice down jackets. I eventually got a really nice synthetic one later and never went back. It is warmer (good down to -50 degrees Fahrenheit with a thin sweater underneath), tougher, thinner, lighter, and more wind and water resistant. Nowhere near as expensive either. Usually you get what you pay for...Usually. I think feathers are more expensive because they need to be grown, the brand name and history with the famous people that wore them would increase the price even more. Good, yes. $1,500 good? I don't think so.

Why its stock has rough time recently. I never saw Canada goose parkas on sale. I made 5000 dollars out of 2300 dollars investment in Canada Goose in its first year of IPO. It started at 23 dollars a share and rose to $79 dollars within 1 year, per share and started sliding since then, now standing at $50/- it never reached that peak again in following years. Seems its time is up. They need a very aggressive sales strategy. Out of this gratitude I am going to buy 1 Expedition Parka this month

Not mentioned in the video, Canada Goose is also expensive because it will never go on sale. GC’s reseller agreement don’t allow retailers to sell below MSRP. They do this to protect the brand value. But also As an anti counterfeit tactic. If you ever see a CG jacket on sale below below MSRP, it’s likely fake.

BUT, a jacket that can only withstand temperatures down to -30°C IS ridiculously bad in my opinion. If you'd really want to be outside in cold weather (and actually many places in Norway always gets temperatures lower than that for a while in the winter. The difference between the coastal climate and the inner arctic climate, just inside mainland Norway, can be huge.) or if you'd really wanted to go on an expedition somewhere cold; Canada Goose just doesn't cut it. If Canada Goose only can withstand temperatures as low as -30°C there is no way anyone could use that if they, say, are participating in Finnmarksløpet (the world's northernmost sled dog race, and Europe's longest sled dog race).

To be honest I'm on both sides on this argument, strangely where I live these shiny ugly cheap coats are the type everyone is wearing, that's one thing I can't get around, but maybe they don't ever work in the country or just wanna be "cool".
