  • Which is the true king of mileage? We test drive them together (like normal people, no eco run tactics here) on a real world road trip to find out!
    Hybrids like the Toyota Corolla Cross have great mileage numbers but is it enough to make up for how much raw car you get for almost the same money with a traditional diesel SUV like the Toyota Fortuner?
    00:00 Intro
    00:38 Why small Cross vs big Fortuner?
    02:35 Checkpoint 1: Mixed Mileage Check
    03:26 Why is diesel more efficient than gas anyway?

    The more you drive the more a hybrid or any fuel efficient vehicle pays back in savings, but every owner will have a different pattern of commute. Conversely, if you drive very little, the ACTUAL amount of $ paid for fuel is small over the entire span of the vehicle ownership, and as such does not pay off eventually. I find it weird that a lot of reviewers don't talk about that. Taiwanese reviewers talk A LOT about this, and they mention how many km's per year you need to drive, in order for a hybrid to make economical sense over 5,6,10 years.

      ruclips.net/video/euhbhjOXKYk/видео.html
      Actually, why would you need a video to discuss that? To me its rather straight forward. Petrol is x$ per liter. A hybrid engine only saves petrol when you drive more in stop start conditions. In a constant highway speed it does not really save so much, but still it is considerably less. So depending on what conditions you drive in, the more you drive in those conditions per day then the more petrol you save, and you must calculate the return on investment vs time. The simplest way to think about this is if you buy a petrol version vs a hybrid version and park both in a garage and never drive it, you'd be sure the petrol version will actually be a better economic solution.
      Please bear in mind my original comments were made 6 months ago (Dec 2021), and petrol prices were not as high as today (June 2022) so I'm sure you can do the maths when given the example.

    Having read all the comments (48 at the time of my comment), I noticed that no one mentioned the environmental cost of diesel vs hybrid. Not really surprising though; most Pinoys still predominantly care about personal benefits (fuel savings, maintenance cost, lifestyle/macho perception, etc.), rather than the cost (carbon footprint, air particulates, nitrous oxide emission, etc.) to others (family health, the planet, etc.) Maybe the hybrid is like divorce; the Philippines will be the last country to embrace it. 😆

    Let's assume based on the current price right now here in my hometown.
    P85/L for the diesel
    P81/L for gasoline
    Let's assume we'll average a 12,000 km/year
    As per your experiment the mileage of Fortuner is 15 km/L & the Cross is 18.1 km/L
    In a year the Fortuner will consume 800 L of diesel which will translate to 68,000 pesos annual fuel cost while Cross will consume around 663 L of gasoline which will translate to 53,040 pesos
    You'll save in Cross 14960 pesos in fuel annually, based only on our current fuel price.
    I think you'll benefit even more in Cross if you're more on city driving.

    • @ZigWheelsPhilippines
      @ZigWheelsPhilippines  2 года назад

      With the battery under warranty for 8-years (10 on other models) Toyota claims it is good for the lifetime of the vehicle and we shouldn't think about extra maintenance costs involved with it. Meanwhile the gas engine should not be much different cost-wise from a non-hybrid version

    Mabuhay from Malaysia. Want to ask your opinion, in Malaysia due to government tax, the Cross Hybrid is 1,676,863, versus Fortuner 2.8 (top spec) 2,447,975. With the huge increase in price between the 2 SUVs, which one would you vote for now?

      We wouldn't really cross shop the Cross Hybrid with the top spec Fortuner, even in the PH the gap between the two is more than 750k and it's simply too much of a difference!
      Interior quality, the Cross beats the base Fortuner in our comparo, but the Fortuner benefits from its big chassis especially when it comes to dampening vibration and harshness, noise it will lose out because it is a diesel after all!

      In my opinion, 3km/L difference between a diesel G variant Fortuner and TCC hybrid is actually not quite accurate. There were quite a number of variables that should have been factored in like the driving habits of the drivers. Maintenance wise also, Hybrid costs much lower since it has no starter, no spark plugs, no hydraulic steer, no alternator, and no fan belt… just to name a few.

    It would have been better if you used a Fortuner 2.4 V 4x2 AT because it has cruise control. My point is that it might have been better to see if both vehicles were in cruise control with a speed locked in at say 80km per hour; and both on ECO mode. We can achieve this since it’s an expresssway.
    I’m sure the Corolla Cross could have clocked in at 22km per liter easy if the driver did not have to change to sports mode at one point in the video. This could have been the reason why it went down to 18km per liter.
    Last July I went to Baguio using my Corolla Cross hybrid (QC to Baguio is 250 km). I put it not in Eco mode but Normal mode… with aircon on, cruise control at 90km/hr… in the end, it registered 25kk/L.
    But I applaud for the effort to compare the G variant diesel and the Cross hybrid. At the end of the day, it all boils down the driving style or habit. 🙂

    One reason why diesel as a fuel has higher heating value as compared to gasoline is that diesel sold here in the Philippines contains 5%(v/v) of ethanol vs 10%(v/v) of gasoline wherein ethanol has lower heating value compared to the two.
    On why hybrid makes more sense as compared to traditional engine, if your everyday activity entails a lot of driving then you should be choosing hybrid.
    Case in point: if you'll be driving roughly 60,000km over a 5yr period, that extra 3km/L of fuel will translate to around 20,000L of gasoline. Assuming PhP50/L of gasoline price, that easily translates to a million pesos which covers the PhP100,000 price difference.
    Hopefully, this hybrid maintenance expense is not that sky high

    • @ZigWheelsPhilippines
      @ZigWheelsPhilippines  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for sharing that quality info! With the average daily mileage of 10,000km per year in the PH, it's not really far off to hit 60k especially if you get inspired to go on drives because you have great fuel economy!

    • @toothlessfartmonster5873
      @toothlessfartmonster5873 Год назад

      Your computation is completely wrong. 18 km/L (Cross) vs. 15 km/L (Fortuner), assuming gasoline price is at Php 50/L, only equates to a difference of 0.55 cents/km (Php 2.78/km for the Cross vs. Php 3.33/km for the Fortuner). Multiply that to 60,000 km, you will only get a net savings of Php 33,000 over a 5-year period. Well, if the price of gasoline increases, you'll save more of course.

    great! but here's a thing, the maintenance should be checked as well. with that big tires of Fortuner, malamang mas magastos than the smaller options. plus GAS engines are really easy to maintain, may hybrid lng but then Prius are proven toyota hybrid. Sana pati yung GAS total expenses pinag match nyo na din. kasi mas mura di hamak diesel dyan.. anyway. thanks! I'll wait for the Innova hybrid, makes more sense than a getting a corolla cross. I'm giving myself 5 more years, dadami na hybrid cars, or EV dito sa pinas. Salamat naman. $%#$L2$#@! na govt.

    I'd go for the fortuner. Gas prices are up. Whatever mileage you save in a cross will be compensated for the price of diesel and 'm skeptical with these new techs.

    I've done a simple calculation, of Pesos per 500km of both cars, as of right now June 30, 2023
    Diesel (normally is cheaper) = 54 pesos
    Gas 91 octane = 64.5 pesos
    Fortuner runs 15km per 54 pesos
    Corolla cross runs 18.1km per 64.5 pesos
    So in a 500km trip:
    - fortuner costs about 1,799 pesos
    - corolla cross costs about 1,781 pesos
    but normally the cross can run on average about 20km/L
    so I hope this can help.
