CBR vs CQP vs VBR, which Rate Control to use for Video Editing and OBS

  • The rate controls can be confusing. However, if you are currently using CQP or VBR and are experiencing lag when video editing, you might wanna switch to CBR. This is what we experiment with in this video.
For this I recorded 1440p 60fps (HEVC) at
    20,000 kbps CBR
    24 CQP

I appreciate how comprehensive you are about the topics discussed on your videos. I've clicked around far more popular videos of this same topic for awhile which left me with nothing but black boxes which didn't completely answer the questions I had, it's like getting DIY furniture without the tools or screws included. I have subscribed and will remain your loyal consumer for the foreseeable future.

The test was awesome, love doing and seeing stuff like that, this just confirmed me sticking with CBR. Also- for anyone who uses Handbrake post-recording or works with ".m4v" and has this lag issue Vex tested for, I highly recommend just changing the file extension to ".mp4" and it will mostly solve the problem of lag with seeking a frame or on playback in the editing workflow - the file containers are so similar and use the same wrapper, so this change can be made without corruption, but make a backup first just to be sure, I do just out of paranoia lol - But that's a great way to mitigate what was a huge issue for me for a long time. It can take a minute to do this for a lot of files, but it's definitely worth it in my experience! Or you could just use a remux encoder like ffmpeg to mass change them, that'd work too and prevent you having to copy and paste ".mp4" over and over lol

was a nice surprise to see you test this in resolve as its literally the reason i was looking this up. ive been recording with cqp at a level of 14 and am constantly needing to create proxy media and half the time it just refuses to generate the proxy. makes the editing process a huge chore and take way longer than it should. definitely gonna try out cbr because of this. Also the test you did was perfect. having quick jumpcuts and showing the lag and stutter between them, its the exact problem i have if i dont generate proxies. thanks for the video and attention to detail

Yeah it def wasn’t a perfect test, but I’m glad it helped. It’d prolly still be a good bit better with resolve studio for hardware acceleration. Generating proxies is a huge pain, especially with huge clips. So rather just record in a format u can actually edit in

@@vextakes it was a good test to demonstrate one of the downsides, especially for something like quick cuts like that, that you use to do zoom ins and things like that, its important to time them how you want without it skipping frames. Also yeah i'm sick of proxies now, will be such a huge time saver if i'm able to edit cbr footage straight from the source rather than have to wait hours just to be able to edit my footage smoothly. my cpu will probably be thankful too

That's a bit pointless test, as you were testing a file that was RENDERED BY DAVINCHIE and not actually re-recording another take with OBS. Resolve and OBS may be transcoding files completely differently, even tho they both would be defined as "constant bitrate" files

What are your recommendations for Optimal settings for someone who wants to upload 1440p 60fps with it looking as good as possible but not taking up a ridiculous amount of space?
Also I have davinci studio and editing isnt that great even on that with CQP. you have to make proxies and setup the render cache and lower the timeline while editing. Does CBR put less strain on your system? Should i use nvidia H.264 or Nvidia Hevc? if I use CBR what Bitrate would be nice esp if im going to upscale to 4k

I'm using Radeon 7800XT GPU and for recording I have a bit more options for Rate Control: QVBR and HQVBR. I can actually use QVBR and it keeps the quality more at a lower bitrate than VBR, it has a value similar to CQP however in QVBR the lower the number of the value the worse the quality. Now with HQVBR it can keep the quality even better ... however my recordings are really really stuttery, would love to see if you test those Rate Controls.

I have always recorded in CQP and in Davinci Resolve and I was having the same problem: non smooth timeline, I was having this problem with my old rx 5700xt (which I sold 1 month ago) and with my rx 3070 that I have now and the strange thing was that even if I told (from the settings) to the software that it had to use the CUDA of the gpu for editing, with the graphic specs on the screen, I noticed that the GPU wasn't being utilized, so I looked for the solution and it is more stupid than I imagined: with davinci resolve opened you have to go to the task manager and set the priority to high, in this way the gpu will work and I noticed it immediately, time line without stuttering and as soon as I moved it the use of the gpu went up.

    Great video, buddy.
I used to have CBR at around 70 000 if i remember right with x264 two years ago when i was recording game footage. But it's been a while since i've recorded anything. And just now after i upgraded my PC from a 1st Gen Ryzen 7 1700 to a Ryzen 9 7950X and 64GB DDR5 RAM 2x32 G.SKILL Trident Z5 Neo non RGB AMD EXPO OC profile 6000MHz CL32-38-38-96 1.40v with an RTX 3070 which i had prior to the upgrade. I got some motivation to try and record again with the new PC parts. And i think i'll try NVENC this time around, but again, with CBR set to around 70 000 to 100 000 in OBS depending on the file size. I like to tinker OBS, and i'm glad a free program like it exists compared to all other paid ones that aren't even as good as OBS. OBS is a godsent. I wonder how my PC will perform in DaVinci Resolve as well with the 7950X. But first, i'll try out OBS.

      Thanks homie
Uh ur new build will be fine in resolve and obs. I’d def use nvenc, it’s so much more efficient. Unless u wanna record av1 on ur cpu or something. I wouldn’t get too caught up with the super high bitrates. Honestly if ur just recording gameplay, most of the stuff that does well on RUclips is only 6000 kbps at 1080p cos it’s from streams. I use HEVC on my gpu and it looks pretty indistinguishable from raw footage at 20,000 kbps (1440p 60). But I recently dropped it down to 15,000 cos it still looks really good and I just recorded 2hr40m of footage which was less than 15gb. Also runs super smooth in resolve. The key is to stop using anything h.264 related when recording locally, there’s no point. I did another video comparing 264, 265 and av1, at all bitrates, 264 looked only looked half as good as the others

I've always really liked to record and edit videos.
I see it as an " artistic " type of work. But i have a lot more to learn about video production as a hobbyist. I'm also glad that DaVinci Resolve is a free program just like OBS. These two are phenomenal programs for being free. With all the in-depth functionality they both offer. I'm psyched about this again lol but that's a good feeling, lol 😆

a 3minute video is 458 megabytes so I think that is around 20MBS
for a game like cs-go I use CQP 24 and preset 5 nvenc which is a bit lighter and preset 6 drops frames in this case.
CQP is great if you are like me and only cut off the start and end,s of videos with handbrake but if you want to edit constant bit rate is good.
Nivida shadow play high quality is 60MBs and it uses the medium preset 4 I think as it seems dosent but not as efficient as 6

    • @vextakes
      @vextakes  Год назад

what recording settings do u use- encoder, rate control, bitrate, res, fps? Little side thing, if ur in 1440p in resolve you have to set a custom resolution, it will default footage to 1080p. So u set up a custom timeline, instead of allowing resolve to automatically set the res and fps
