  • Gaming Handheld Situation is 'Getting Out of Hand'. There's a lot of goofy titles for this
We've seen quite an insane amount of handheld PCs release in an insanely short amount of time. With each consecutive release it feels like people care less and less about what is happening. The Steam Deck seemed to kick it off (along with the switch) now everyone is tryna pile on like Asus, Lenovo, MSI, Zotac, Sony, and Microsoft... it's kinda ridiculous. Let's talk about if handhelds are all they are hyped up to be or are literally all of these gonna just disappear in a couple years.

It really isn't more options... At its core it's the identical thing with only meaningful difference being screen used. Integrated controller as well as APU are pretty much the same across the board. So, it's more of pick your flavor than any real choice. All these devices run on Windows too which is really just a terrible experience for handheld gaming. It's really depressing seeing how none of the options out there can really compete with the Steam Deck in any meaningful way other than power and that's under condition of being plugged to wall socket and cranking up TDP to levels that would otherwise delete your battery in 50min play session....

I really think the biggest edge of the Steam Deck is Linux, it's way more efficient and lets Valve get closer to the metal and extract more performance from it's APU. The only handheld that I think could conceviably compete is an Xbox handheld, and that'd need a really stripped down, "gamer" edition of Win or something. Possible, but I don't see that happening with Microsoft's current CEO and decision making.
The Steam Deck or similar PC handhelds are totally accessories, but you know what? They're also great showcases for indie games, and I'm all for anything that diversifies the gaming market and makes indie titles more appealing. Speaking from my experience running a GRE, it almost feels wasteful to play indie games? Like, you've got a GPU that can push RT in 4K with upscaling, *it'd be a waste not to use it, I should play the latest AAA game*. Having a device specced specifically for indies would definitely make it a lot easier to justify having a bajillion indie games in my backlog that I'll probably never get to XDXDXD

The vita segment wasn’t properly explained. It didn’t merely fail because of 15 millions units being sold. The real reason the predecessor (psp). Piracy was so bad (Sony MAJORLY restricted the capabilities of that unit) devs didn’t want to risk it again. So Sony in their infinite wisdom made a proprietary storages solution that was HELLA expensive (even to this day). Then did weird tweaks to the unit to prevent custom ps1 games from playing on the vita. The final nail in the coffin was devs lost so much money thx to piracy on the psp they were afraid to return for the vita. With Sony being practically the only studio supporting the unit minus a handful of third party devs. The support wasn’t there to justify buying the units. Plus I just remembered they had a cellar unit as well was cost a pretty penny if I’m not mistaken. It was huge dumpster fire for sure but it wasn’t solely because only 15 million units sold. That was the outcome of all the BS surrounding the system sad part is the system was AWASOME. Just horribly limited and issues with psp lead to an early grave.

Vita became really popular with small studios toward the end of its life, particularly Western indies and Japanese visual novel companies. The unwillingness to make games for it mostly came from the big publishers. But the type of studios that gravitated toward the Vita also highlights issues with the hardware itself: It's not weak enough for big 3rd-party publishers consider it appropriate for their budget projects like Liberation Maiden, Nano Assault, Persona Q, Stella Glow, Theatrhythm, Bravely Default, etc... the 3DS seemed more appropriate for that. It's also not powerful enough to be a PS3 on the go, so all it got was scuffed ports of home console games that play better on a home device while NOT having guaranteed Cross Buy with all titles that are also on PS3/PS4. Major mistake on Sony's part for not guaranteeing Cross Buy from the start, making the proposition of the Vita to buyers as having a separated, isolated library from their PS3/PS4.

the steam deck is the only one that focuses on the efficiency instead of being only a "big numbers" machine like the others, and thanks to that, it still has the betteer performance/efficiency/battery ratio of them all, and as we are talking about PORTABLE machines, that is KEY feature.
Besides that it also has the more user friendly experience of the them all, being the only one that has a trully plug & play first use, intalling ALL you need by itself, and with a console-like inferface wich is the most casual pc experience you can find out there.
Those two points, plus the price and the customer support of valve are the ones that make the steam deck the favourite of the community even if its not the most powerful one, because again, in a portable device, thats not the main point, and that is why the others are failing.

Your argument is absolutely terrible, you say since we already have so many handhelds on the market, why do we need more the reason? Because of variety, some of them offer different features. Some of them are cheaper but some of them are more expensive like the steam deck compared to the rog Ally. They're basically the same price so you have to make a choice. Do you want the experience or the games? And if I apply your argument that you just used to anything else it breaks down, like monitors for example. We already have so many monitors. Why do we need more? There's already so many on the market. It's because they offer different features, Plus gaming handhelds are pretty important in third world countries. I saw a few other comments saying the same thing

I bought one because I travel for work. And a lot of the times I’m in the middle of nowhere so I usually just eat and play steam deck in my hotel.
I convinced my coworker to buy a steam deck for his kid instead of a switch. He has steam so he can use steam family to share games, and the games are much cheaper than on switch. You can set up an emulator to lay switch games, and if his son is patient, you can get games you want for cheap. He was patient and got stardew valley half off on steam summer sale. Instead of paying 40$ on switch. A console that when it runs out of support, you lose that library. Now his son will own that game forever.

You can easily take it with you room to room, can easily take it to a friends house, can easily share it with friends/family, you can use it for actual work at home and on the go. The use cases are more versatile than you think. Most people aren’t playing modern AAA games anymore so HW isn’t an issue, and most people don’t really care about graphics or framerate as long as the game plays and they get the other benefits that work for them. Basically it’s a better laptop for a lot of people. The key thing most of these companies miss is a good docking solution. Having a dock at every location in the house it would be used is great and eliminates the need for in home game streaming or multiple pcs. They’re also pretty cheap which is also nice. They’ll also hold their value longer than any gpu… I can keep going but the point is it may not work for you, but for a lot of people it works well. I haven’t played a game at my desk in years at this point, but in home streaming has it drawbacks.

More competition typically leads to lower prices, more options on hardware quality at different price points, more features, and better experiences.
As for why one would want to game on something like a steam deck over a desktop. That's definitely more of a preference thing. I and many grew up playing games on handhelds. My first handheld was a gameboy color and I played the hell out of the Pokemon games on it and the Zelda games. I frequently played the gameboy even though I had a tv and console in the same room with me. I could play the gameboy and watch tv in the same room. If I wanted to, I could take the gameboy into the living room and watch tv with the family while playing the gameboy.
Years later when the Switch came out I had long forgotten why anybody would want to play on the screen when you could just play on a tv or computer monitor. And then I got one. I initially expected I would play it docked most of the time, but found I preferred playing it handheld for the most part.
Even before the Steam Deck had been announced I was already interested in handheld PCs. Back before the SD it was mostly Aya Neo's and GPDs offerings that were available. But the price is mostly what kept me away. So when the Steam Deck was announced and it had a more affordable price I decided I would get one. I got in line like everybody else at the time and several months later time came to pay and I bought one.
The Steam Deck is my main way to play most games. I do have a desktop PC that is more powerful, but I generally prefer the versatility of the Deck. I can take it anywhere and play on it even within the house. If I am going somewhere for the night I take it with me as well. It even works well as a video player too if I just want to watch a movie or something.

You are missing the point. These companies are striving to remain relevant in a rapidly evolving market. The handheld form factor is ideally suited for Nintendo, as their platform thrives on first-party software designed for small screens. Valve's goal is to release a console that attracts as many console gamers as possible, not to entice PC players to buy the Steam Deck. Hardware sales are not profitable, and PC gamers already have extensive Steam libraries, making them unlikely to purchase games specifically for the Steam Deck. The real opportunity for software sales comes from gamers switching from PS5 or Xbox, who lack a compelling small-screen experience. This explains Sony's hasty launch of the underdeveloped PS Portal.

Good vid, I honestly agree with a bunch of the points but I do have to make a correction on some info you gave on device release history towards the beginning of the video, the original gpd win (that weird laptop one) predates the switch(march 2017) by about 6 months(October 2016) and as they slowly improved on the design and power of the device over the years others jumped in like Ayaneo and onexplayer. The steam deck came out far after a lot of competition already existed. You are right that many more company's are coming out of the wood works as a response to the steam deck.

One of the main advantages of dedicated handhelds like the 3DS/Vita was that software is optimized for the hardware, Steamdeck has somewhat a similar aspect compared to the Windows Handhelds (who are running hardware agnostic software). Compiling a game to be optimized for hardware is very important especially for portable devices to minimize unnecessary power consumption otherwise you are glued to the wall.

  • @da1writer1985
    @da1writer1985 12 дней назад +1

I know this is a personal take on this discussion but If this was my perspective as a working dad, I just wouldn't game period if the choice was a gaming desktop or console. That actually happened to me shortly after buying a PS4 Pro and later I bought a PS5 at launch for some reason - I stopped gaming. Worked a 10+ hour day, wanted to at least be in the room with my kids after as we ate, allowing them to watch their favorite shows for most of the night. Would end the night beside my wife and had to decide to leave her to go to a separate room to game or just be on my phone or do stuff with her (watch a movie or show with her on her tablet, what did you think I was going to say.) Weekend might be a possibility but that's when I spend the most time with my family and the night would be the usual.
So Gaming for me stopped sometime in 2018. Didn't have time or the feeling to put an effort due to prioritizing family.
If it wasn't for the Switch or the Steamdeck, I wouldn't be gaming today. The convenience of being able to play a little bit at work, play while being in the room with my kids as they watch these crap shows made today, or play next to my wife at anytime has been fantastic. Stop and resume at any moment needed has been great. So I sold my consoles and tossed away the idea of a desktop.
For some of us with a bit higher responsibilities than others, these gaming handhelds have been a godsend. Ally, Legion Go, Steamdeck, Switch, or retro handhelds - whatever handheld you game on, I'm sure myself and others that just don't have the time to stay locked away at a particular location are appreciative these handhelds exist so we can still game anytime anywhere.

You are kind of ignoring the fact that some of those companies were making these PC handhelds for quite a while before the Steam Deck. The Steam Deck basically piggy-backed off of them and slapped a nice price tag on top, taking it out of niche into more spotlight.. sure, Asus, Lenovo, MSi and Zotac are basically just putting out *something* to seem relevant, but they do also provide actual Windows support and driver compatibility.

having recently gotten a steam deck (3 days ago), i gotta say it's a complete gamechanger for me
i usually have trouble playing singleplayer games on my laptop, and mostly end up playing online games (destiny 2 in this instance), & i'd feel bad for not continuing the endless amount of games i started & never bothered to continue. Now with the steam deck, i can relegate those single player games (outside of shooters cuz i suck at aiming with controller) to the handheld, and play destiny without feeling the guilt of not continuing my sp games. i picked up blasphemous 2 again because of it and i sunk around 6 hours easily in one go, something i'd probably never be able to do on my laptop nowadays
i know its mostly a me issue but man am i glad to have my steam deck, though i understand the sentiment voiced in this great video. thanks!

What people don't realize is that these "handhelds" are secretly vying for a spot in your living room as an alternative to consoles. They are Xbox with slightly more mobility. Heck, I'd not be surprised if most of these are concepts developed as a bid to be the Xbox handheld manufacturer, and just pushed out as products because they already invested on R&D and manufacturing pipeline.
A lot of people might think the portability is these handheld's greatest feature, and it is a great strength, but the true brilliance lies in reducing friction to game access. All these games you used to have to fire up on the PC to play is now accessible anywhere, and the screen + controller form factor reduced the need for additional accessories. It's cool that I can take these on the train and planes, but really, where these devices shine is when your partner wants to watch Survivor and you want to do some organizing inn Stardew Valley, you get to sit down in the same space, spend time with one another chit chat, and still do things you want to do

I live in the Caribbean and own a Lenovo Legion Go. This is gold for a casual PC player like myself. it's not for everyone but it definitely has a place. to buy something like this you save some for months or go and work during the summer, you have to consider also the second-hand market, that is how people get iPhones. As for me, I have a gaming laptop but I prefer to play with LLG since the computer is for work, it's also more convenient if I'm in my Mother-in-Law's house or simply I'm in another place and have to sleep there, also I fell more immersed in the handheld. I'm not saying everybody can buy this like not everybody is a PC gamer...

Biggest selling point of gaming handhelds, especially steam deck is that you can play already bought games on the go. Not everyone buys this to play latest games. Many old school gamers play older games on the go. Not everyone is stuck to work from home sort of job. Additionally, cost of owning a gaming pc is higher than a steam deck + laptop. Basic office jobs can easily be done on a simple 200 to 300 dollars laptop. RETAIL cost of PC (total cost of a custom build) and recurring monthly electricity bill takes toll on average consumer especially in 3rd world countries. I see mobile phones becoming powerful enough to run older pc games and handheld getting better at playing latest games at 60fps in near future. Right now, we can play a decade older games like GTA 5 on a decent $600 smartphone using emulators like winlator. Not many are hardcore gamers who can afford rtx 4070 or more. The total cost of a laptop + steam deck + a decent smartphone

I find myself gaming alot more now. Most of my laptop gaming session would be doing updates for windows and graphics drivers. With the steam deck, the updates are quick even though they happen often. Plus the console like experience keeps me focused on gaming instead of getting sidetracked with other things I can do on a PC. It's so much easier to get in a bit of gaming when I can bring the deck anywhere in my house and throw on some earbuds so I don't disturb anybody with noise. And the sleep and resume functionality on the deck is amazing

When gpu prices were at their highest and I was too broke to invest into a new setup after moving the Steam Deck was a amazing replacement and while you had to do sketchy stuff to get dualboot working and sometimes have to re configure stuff due to steam pushing a firmware or bios update, at the time of launch it was a no brainer portable gaming pc to buy for that price point even considering how limited the APU was with some more tinkering you can squeeze some more perfomance out of the Deck that makes games feel considerably more stable. And even when its outpaced in the current Gen you still have such a huge collection of Games to play that you will always find something enjoyable to play on it.

I had the Rog Ally and the steam deck LCD and I absolutely LOVED both of them. The deck for the OS, simplicity and the "just work" feel to it, the ally for the size(while not that much smaller than the deck, it was noticeable more compact and easy to carry), the windows + gamepass, the screen and the power when plugged(terrible battery though), but I am in the same situation as you, I don't really leave my house that often as I do work very little, so it was just sitting there without much use, as I would just prefer playing on my gaming pc, I really wished I could've found more use for them and while I brought the ally with me on my trip to asia for 2 months, once I was back home I just sold it. I also wished there was a "deck mini", because while the deck is awesome, it's too cumbersome to be called portable, as you would need to take up to 40% of your backpack space if you want to bring it with you on a trip, hence why I prefered the ally.
And like someone mentioned, on developing countries is a very good value proposition, as you can actually have a 1 device to rule them all, using as your pc connected to a screen, keyboard and mouse AND as your handheld for less than the price of a decent graphics card+cpu combo.

The steam deck and other handhelds are a middle ground option for those that can't justify a full pc due to size and attention commitments, but still want something that can do PC games. The problem is that they are basically already as good as they can be for the current hardware limitations. To try to put more horsepower in them requires additional cooling, less battery life, enlarging of form factor, etc, all for marginal at best gains to actual playability of games. I feel like the target market for stuff like the Steam Deck and Ally are actually those wanting a console and those wanting to make the switch from console to PC but aren't comfortable just diving in. When you actually look at prive vs performance, as all in one packages that come with 'keyboard' 'mouse' and screen of decent quality, the deck and other handhelds are actually pretty interesting. It's helped quite a bit by that smaller screen letting lower resolutions still look really good, but yeah.
It's for this reason that emulation handhelds actually tend to have more hype around them, as they are actually doing different form factors, managing to make advancements in capabilities within their size, etc. That and a lot of them are ACTUALLY pocketable and have proper 'sleep'/stasis modes built in. While yes, they are limited in what kinds of games can be put on them, let's be real, how many people will actually manage to play even the entire highlight reel from JUST the GBA?

Man I wish I bought the Steam Deck sooner. I built two gaming PCs recently, and found a refurbished Deck at GameStop in extremely good condition that I've been doing most of my gaming on recently. Steam Deck is perfect for getting through that backlog of games I've built up over the years, and PC gaming from the bed is so comfy! 🤗🤗

Nice that Switch can be TV console but with a laptop hub and controller, so can the Steam Deck (and likely the others as well). I paid $70 for Tears of the Kingdom. I've been collecting PC games on Steam since 2010ish and have a huge collection already. The problem for me is the use case. I just don't use a handheld very often as I have a gaming PC on a 48" OLED.

    1. You can also say that there are too many companies that make laptops
    2. Handhelds are a niche market. Companies like GPD have actually been around a lot longer than ppl realize, making pocketable devices for engineers, etc.
    3. APUs are getting better and more efficient
    4. Competition is a good thing. The problem is companies that release too many models in the same year such as Aya neo

I do value the portability and efficiency of devices, and was thinking of getting a Steam Deck, but I'm still not 100% certain.

My anecdotal experience in Japan teaching:
    Video games are the Switch.
Other people play on phones (note, iPhone only).
    Vtubers have PCs.
    Sometimes people still use Playstations.
After the second line of the above there is a HUGE drop off. Unless you can play on the go people tend not to like games systems.

I have a very powerful desktop, but I play on a handheld more because I actually like playing on the handheld form factor. Sometimes you just want to get away from the desk.

And here I thought you were going to talk about those small emulation handhelds. Becasue that segment is even larger and more ridiculous.

I used my steamdeck A TON when I was going to college. After I earned my degree I found myself using it far less often so I ended up selling it. I got a maxed out gaming PC and a decent gaming laptop, so the steamdeck was redundant. Awesome little machine though. I'd buy another one if my lifestyle required it again.

My complaint about these devices is the lack of mouse&keyboard. At least if they had a mouse or keyboard, they could actually be the mobile AIO devices laptops have always dreamed of becoming. The laptop form factor just isn't as mobile as this.

Aya Neo has one, but you gonna pay a premium over the others for sure

Thos biggest issue with steamdeck is only steam library or way to much effort to get none steam library things to run on it. I own about 800 games and only 112 are on steam

I was sort of interested when the steam deck 1st came out. But it didnt seem like it had enough power and the screen was a little top small. Then the legion go came out and thats the one i got.
    Been pretty happy with it
Also keep in mind you can stream tbe game from steam with the power of your pc. That works super well for me
