As of my last update in August 2024, Mazda had not officially confirmed or released detailed information about a model named the RX-9. However, there has been ongoing speculation and anticipation about a successor to the RX-8, often referred to as the RX-9 in automotive circles. Mazda has expressed interest in reviving its rotary engine technology, with the possibility of integrating it into a new sports car. This aligns with the company’s interest in bringing back its iconic rotary engine in a new, modern context. For the latest and most accurate updates, I recommend checking Mazda's official website or recent automotive news sources, as developments could have occurred after my last update.
The nomenclature doesn't follow. The RX7 had 3 generations. The RX8 had one. They were two different cars. The RX7 is a 2-door, and the RX8 isn't. If the next car has 2 doors, it's an RX7. An RX9 would have to be a different configuration - like a Rotary Hatchback. You don't just add +1 to RX8 and say it's an RX9. Just like the MX5 didn't become the MX6, 7, 8.. It's still an MX5, 4 generations in..
For 60k and up, it's gotta have over 500hp - which it won't. It'll be an electric hybrid. They'll have to get at least $40k for it to break even. Nobody will want it because of the poor efficiency of the rotary engine used to power and re-energize the electrics. Just take the styling and drop a nice 4.2 V-8 in it, with a turbo 2.0 base model for $30k and call it a day.
Fantastic can not wait to see and drive it wow 5:01
As an extremely satisfied Mazda customer, I’m delighted with this innovative RX-9 and the superb Iconic SP ✨
