@@biggiebagel Still a rotary engine. Just spending most of it's time as a generator. But, yes. The action of the motor is the same. So, it is still a rotary. I'm really rooting for Mazda. I've driven various miatas (including my own NB) and have heard great things about the driving dynamics and quality of each of their models, from their smallest hatchbacks to their largest SUVs. It truly feels like they care about putting out a well made, elegant product that's enjoyable to drive, no matter the form factor. It'd be nice if they walked this back to a more traditional hybrid with a proper rotary drivetrain and electric assist, but that's mostly just wishful thinking. Hopefully we'll see these in production and on the road someday in the near future :)
i went from my old mx-5 NB to the new Mazda3 and they're both brilliant. In different ways admittedly but no other company makes cars quite like mazda do. Mazda make the cars you want to be in, not the cars that tick all the boxes you need
Back in 88-89 n Miami I had the pleasure of driving a souped up Rx-7 and it was a blast. That thing was so fast. That rotary engine and its exhaust sounded like heaven...
This car combines things people like about the different generations of MX-5. The popup headlight from the NA, the seductive curves of the NB, the stunning front of the ND. Add the barely contained, dynamically strained shape of RX-7, that makes you think of a big cat ready to jump at any moment... You get this car. It is awesome, and shows real heritage to the greatest Mazdas of the past.
It's a beautiful design and I love the philosophy behind it that the chief designer articulated. It's the kind of car that, if they pull it off in production, you'd enjoy driving and just sitting and looking at.
That's so cool, I've got the 2000 FD sitting in the garage, also red I really hope they go ahead with this because I think true fans will definitely buy it
Loved the segment where the designer explains his perspective. Beautiful tribute to the RX-7 from the shape to the flip up lights. Even the small details such as Monaco on the dash. I hope they build it.
This concept looks STUNNING, especially with the absolutely necessary POPUP HEADLIGHTS! I sincerely hope we see an “FE RX-7” someday! (Because that comes after FD haha)
The most beautiful car I've seen in a really long time, perhaps ever. Takes most beautiful aspects of what we consider Italian design and then gives it that Japanese, romantic, Ipon like determinism, ...Samurai like flair. Well done Mazda, beautifully half done. Now build it please
I had a 1983 RX-7 Limited Edition that I loved. The SP is the kind of car that makes me want to have a sports car again. I would find a way to buy one if it went into production. Beautiful car!
1:20 - DARPA proposed that kind of drivetrain using rotary engines... That, or it was a contract for development for the US DOD. It makes so much sense that no American car company would do it.
Mazda is one of the few auto companies who seem to have a unified and committed vision. I was looking at CX-5s recently, and I can pretty much visualize how Mazda can apply this designer's vision to their production fleet. It's not overwhelming, so it appeals to ordinary consumers, but it also has this class that makes it hard not to notice. I hope they make this car. And I hope its features make their way to a car I might actually afford!
i felt the love and passion in his words, I used to feel that listening to Italians when they were building their products. RX its definitely different and beautiful in the same time, as all RX models were, a masterpiece of engineering put into production. Im sure it has its place in every passionate garage or dream garage. So yes Mazda! GET BACK INTO SPORTS! Petrol-heads are thirsty! 💲💲
Reminds an 8C Competizione from the side, especially the door, window and roof design. Looks and sounds very promising, hope you'll ensure and continue FD3S's legacy)
Gorgeous. Hope they sell it as the RX-9. Rotary-electric drivetrain is interesting if it’s still light enough to be fun in the corners and makes some pleasing noises. Really hope they offer it with a non-electric drivetrain option too paired to a manual and just let it be beautiful, timeless, analogue-feeling light sports car with great handling for a curvy road. Glad to hear the CEO and designer talking about passion and making cars that speak to enthusiasts and kids rather than “driverless mobility pods”.
Sadly I don't think it's likely they'll make a fully ICE powered option but if they do I would buy it straight up, idc if I go into debt. If it has an ICE option I agree with the other guy that it should be a new gen of rx-7 but if it's always a hybrid then RX-9 or like RX-H for like rotory hybrid or something
It’s stunning! From someone who personally owned an FD, I think this is a great step forward and if the price is right, along with the specs, I would certainly entertain buying one if it ever made it to production.
Unfortunately I'm sure the price is going to be too much, but it will be a unique car for sure. Saying this because look at the price of the Supras/Nissan Z nowadays, as opposed to where they were back in the days
It obviously looks fantastic, as does the interior. Two things I don't love so much: the additional weight of a rotary generator (if you're making an EV, just make an EV, otherwise make a hybrid), and the pop up headlights (they look great, but moving parts add cost and decrease reliability). Give it excellent, usable performance at around $50k USD and you have a winner.
I'm a bit iffy on the tail lights but otherwise it looks good. I think that metallic red you can currently get on their cars is a better colour though.
The rear end in general doesn't look great. I like the rest of the design though. I owned an RX-8 for 8 years and would like to see them make another sports car, although I'm not convinced there's any place for a rotary engine anymore.
@@DavidScotton I have skepticism for the "rotary" part too. Mazda have been shoehorning it over half a century. Not to say they can't be made "reliable" but the upkeep and fuel efficiency for rotaries are too uncompetitive versus a more traditional engine design. I have no doubt that if they do make another sports car aside from the MX-5, it will definitely be soulful and very characteristic of Mazda regardless of powertrain.
The Spirit R FD RX-7 will always be the pinnacle of 2 seater sports car styling. It has aged perfectly. The return of pop-up headlights is so welcomed.
Oh my god!!! This is one of the most beautiful modern-day cars I've seen that isn't a supercar or a Ferrari. Most cars today look like bricks next to it. The clean, but sophisticated, design is SO sexy; no unnecessary element to break up the harmonious look. I love it. Mazda needs to build this. But I don't think it should be the new MX5; leave that little car alone. Nor should it be an RX-7. I would call it the MX-7.
I own an amazing fd. This thing where the engine is a generator takes that absolutely exilerating feeling of the turbo spooling and spinning tires until 9k rpm away. That feeling we all want cant be replaced with something that isnt just rotors being trasmitted to the wheels.
I think this is supposed to gauge interest in a potential RX-7. Mazda folks will be crawling over RUclips comments so make sure to let them know whether you like it or not.
It's just a concept at this point. The guy even said it himself that this was created to show the design direction that Mazda wants to go in the future.
This should be released in the exact way it looks now. That dual rotary engine that can be supported by a variety of fuels is brilliant. The hybrid on the opposite of side of current hybrid. Looks very nice as well!
I like that they went with the “car that could power your house” rather than “car that is powered by your house” approach. Pure EV cars have their place but I think the future looks better with the way they designed this car, with it being able to run on a variety of fuels. The fact that it look like a work of art is also a big plus! It looks stunning😮
Mazda NEEDS to know their design has a market. This thing is gorgeous. And it might not be a classical rotary engine in the brap-brappy way we all hoped, but it's a rotary without doubt and that means its true to both its branch and unique mechanical heritage. Add to that a crisp and modern design and all it needs to be a hit like the MX-5 and the former RX-7, is an affordable price point. I'd be happy to see these on the road and track, but it shouldn't just be a car for executives or collectors. Real drivers need to drive this.
It's visionary! However, those doors are not practical for most parking environments. The ground clearance from the front end is dangerously low and will be scraped instantly with every drive.
Love it. Must have it. I agree with the designer. Design must resonate with our feelings and our heart. The question is then: not what we think, but what we feel. What a beauty and the size is perfect. In a world where Porsches and other sport car brands are growing with America's waist lines, this is perfect and will sell well.
In the 60s, Mazda had the balls to pick up the rotary design and make it work when no one else wanted to risk it. They gave us the FD RX-7. Hearing that this is directly inspired by the RX-7, and will do what it can to carry on its spirit, how can we not want it? And the rotary-electric combo powertrain actually sounds interesting. Rotary engines, for how incredible they are, also have limitations. Perhaps utilizing it to power an electric motor is the exact next stage evolution it needs. Hope this car actually becomes a reality.
My very first car was the turbo RX7 and I must say it was a legal go kart. That darn car was so much fun. Even greater only a two seater so I wasn’t a chauffeur in high school
I really like it. As the owner of an 85 Rx-7 GS which I still have, the minimalist design of this latest incarnation attracts me like it did way back when.
They announce this Beautiful Coupe, and dropped the CX-90 around the same time. From then on the entire industry has been talking non-stop about MAZDA! One of the smallest companies, yet making the biggest waves!! And 2023 was one of their best years of Car/SUV Sales ever.
Mazda Design Dept. = Heart + Mind, Look at what they've done from the past to this beauty. Bravo, may the market be with you & I hope that you sell as many as the MX-5s have.
At first glance this hit me as being strongly influenced by the FD-3... I absolutely LOVE the lines of this car. I'm not, however, loving those wheels... they don't make any sense with what are such beautifully clean lines. The tilt up dynamics of the doors are also a source of doubt. Love the simplicity of the interior... but corduroy? That's not going to age well at all... Full disclosure, I own a 93 FD-3 that I have a completely unreasonable emotional attachment to. Even though it's been by far the most expensive car to own for me, I can't imagine ever selling it. It's just SO much fun to drive... and gets admiring looks whenever I take it out. All that said: Yes, Mazda, please bring back the RX7. Sure, call it what you like... we'll all know what it is. 😁
As an RX-7 owner and lover I really do hope they build this even if I wish it were Rotary powered and maybe battery assisted instead. I have always loved Mazda for their commitment to making even their most boring cars good to drive but in the last 10 years I really love how much the brand has become so designcentric. Its really wonderful and I hope that the company does well because they really deserve to.
We have to remember that Mazda is one of the few manufacturers that will deviate from the "norms" of the day and give us some spectacular cars. The FD is one of the most beautiful cars ever made.

I love it. Different, but not radical. Finally, a sexy headlight that won’t see harsh sun rays its whole life till it turns brittle and yellow.
I own a '93 RX-7 R1 (also red) and absolutely love this concept. It's the first new car I have ever really considered buying, if it comes to fruition.
That's so cool, I've got the 2000 FD sitting in the garage, also red
I really hope they go ahead with this because I think true fans will definitely buy it
Loved the segment where the designer explains his perspective. Beautiful tribute to the RX-7 from the shape to the flip up lights. Even the small details such as Monaco on the dash. I hope they build it.
Simple, smooth flowing lines. Very refreshing.
Stunning lines.
I love it when I don't get 200 sharp lines shoved down my throat
Driving the MX-5 helped me change my life for the better. I love this concept car, and I love Mazda’s commitment to driving enjoyment.
This concept looks STUNNING, especially with the absolutely necessary POPUP HEADLIGHTS! I sincerely hope we see an “FE RX-7” someday! (Because that comes after FD haha)
Unfortunately they couldn't make it an FE, because the Rx-8 took that vin code
I just bought a 99 FD while living in Japan and will definitely get an Iconic if Mazda keeps the design principle.
Out looks so smoothly chill type of car. Inside looks stressless I mean calmness. Such a beautiful car.
Is 2024 Mazda RX-7 supported with MR drivetrain?
@@purwantiallan5089first off not 2024
🤯 I have to admit that car is absolutely stunningly gorgeous🤯
I like it, just the taillights are freaking me out for some reason.
that's beautiful, i think it nods' the Rx7 line up perfectly, needs to be petrol though!
This car is easy for the eye but still striking, environment friendly and it has pop up headlights.
And will be a rocket I imagine lol.
Honestly they need to build this. Its stunning and with the right weight and power train it would be amazing
I'll be so happy if this thing makes production with the pop up headlights
i felt the love and passion in his words, I used to feel that listening to Italians when they were building their products. RX its definitely different and beautiful in the same time, as all RX models were, a masterpiece of engineering put into production. Im sure it has its place in every passionate garage or dream garage. So yes Mazda! GET BACK INTO SPORTS! Petrol-heads are thirsty! 💲💲
That's me out at 1:44.
Omg no way they basically ruined the car by making it electric
RX7-FE rather than rx-9 imo
Sadly I don't think it's likely they'll make a fully ICE powered option but if they do I would buy it straight up, idc if I go into debt. If it has an ICE option I agree with the other guy that it should be a new gen of rx-7 but if it's always a hybrid then RX-9 or like RX-H for like rotory hybrid or something
It’s refreshing to see a simple beautiful design from Japan. I really hope they make it. I’ll be in the queue to buy one.
Well its quite easy to purchase this RX-7.
Time to build it!
Bring back the RX7!!
Same here. If they mimicked something the taillights from the RX-Vision it'd probably be a little more striking in the right way.
Bring back the rear light bar!!!!
Inside looks amazing. Front looks good.
That looks incredible ❤️
Yep
I hope they make it
My first car was a 1981 Cosmo fastback. I loved that car! When you stomped on the accelerator it had a slingshot affect.
The Spirit R FD RX-7 will always be the pinnacle of 2 seater sports car styling. It has aged perfectly. The return of pop-up headlights is so welcomed.
BUILD IT! Old school FD guy here.. I want one.
The designers passion is contagious.
And surprisingly as nimble as Lexus LFA.
After 30 years, the Mazda is still the best looking Japanese car in its category
It’s a baby vantage and I love it
5:46 truly bringing back design because it's pretty and cool, not just all numbers I love it!
"you can use it as a mobile battery when you go camping!"
Okay... but who (just hear me out) the FUUUUUUUUCK is going on a camping trip in an RX-7?
no one
Wow - that's nice. I had an FD back in the day, loved it, and would buy this in a heartbeat.
Damn… I was focussed on the next generation EV Porsche Boxster. This makes me rethink my future
Keep your eye on the Boxster. It's real, it'll be on the market shortly. ;)
Preproduction spotted in Japan with only change to the doors.
That feeling we all want cant be replaced with something that isnt just rotors being trasmitted to the wheels.
that is an insanely beautiful car❤❤❤
Looks awesome! I would buy this.
Estimated Release Date and Price?
🤯Una leyenda de RUclips escribiendo en la caja de comentarios!!
I think this is supposed to gauge interest in a potential RX-7. Mazda folks will be crawling over RUclips comments so make sure to let them know whether you like it or not.
@@bismarchiavelliit would be rx9 not 7 by my maths
No creo salga al mercado por que solo es un concepto.
Lo usaran para ideas
It's just a concept at this point. The guy even said it himself that this was created to show the design direction that Mazda wants to go in the future.
This should be released in the exact way it looks now. That dual rotary engine that can be supported by a variety of fuels is brilliant. The hybrid on the opposite of side of current hybrid. Looks very nice as well!
We all just want an rx-9 that looks like a new version of an rx-7 Like how the Toyota Supra he done it
Yes. It is a beautiful car. I wonder how a production version will actually look, and how much fun it will be to drive.
Stunning car, so slick and smooth
Where do I sign up to get one? is there a list yet 👍
It’s electric 😢
Shut up
It's visionary!
Oh Top Gear , why can't you be as good as the three fellas we miss so much 😢
I really like it. As the owner of an 85 Rx-7 GS which I still have, the minimalist design of this latest incarnation attracts me like it did way back when.
Great looking, Mazda has got it!
Mazda- PLEASE MAKE THIS- or something close. The world needs this. This could save cars all together.
They are.
I love how they gave this car the classic red colour. Qould love to see the soul crystal red as well. Both would look fantastic!
I hope this goes into production, its beautiful.
Absolutely Gorgeous Car. Have owned quite a few Rx7s over the years and this is definitely in that "blood line". Really, hope they produce it, I will be knocking at the dealers door to get on the list.
It should be RX9!
Nakayama san is an incredible artist, no wonder Mazda's exterior has been unique yet true to mazda signature curves
