Noob's Guide to Modding Suspension!

  • Adjustable or Non Adjustable? Linear or Progressive Springs? STATIC OR BAGGED? AIR OR HYDRAULICS? In the automotive world, how you ride (literally) can determine a lot about your vehicle. Suspension affects how it corners, reacts to bumps, how it makes aerodynamics bend around, but most importantly...how it sits!! So GET LOW, GET LOW. Or get High too, I guess whatever is your preference. Get ready to squat, dance, bounce, bog, and prepare your booty for whatever ride the road is about to give you.
    Believe me when I say Coils change the way your car ride. It can make a derpy Mustang with garbage OEM suspension feel like a whole new car! Sporty, reactive, better center of gravity, better aero, and way less wheel spin. It squats less when accelerating and bogs less when braking. Clumsy begins to feel sharp and lazy begins to feel focused. I'm honestly shocked how Fitment from both a wheel and suspension standpoint were the last mods I ever got around to on both of my vehicles. Seriously, my poor Corvette and Mustang had to suffer with massive 4x4 looking wheel gap, but now look at em. Ahhh, that's hot. They're so pretty now. BuT BLadED? hOW cAN uR mUsTAnG LoOk PReTTy oN LoWeReD CoiLS iF iT'S GoNE?
    I said it was involved in an accident so brutal it was considered a total loss by insurance... but I never once said...it was gone :)

    Don't cheap out on coilovers, they can be worse that stock of you go too cheap. You can also get more adjustability with the more expensive ones as well.

    • @BladedAngel
      @BladedAngel  2 года назад +57

      Honestly a $1K Coilover setup is still leagues ahead of a worn out OEM strut setup. For High mileage old used cars, I think even cheap-mid range coils are still fine. The cheapest coils are still better than the best springs, since I'd rather have a new assembly than keep wearing my OEM one. As for a new car, OEM suspension has gotten so advanced with adjustability, that yeah some Coilovers are far worse than OEM (on top of New Cars being low mileage so nothing is worn yet).

    • @jaydenray2803
      @jaydenray2803 2 года назад +18

      @@BladedAngel true, especially if it is a 20 year old car with blown out struts. Just something to keep in mind. 1K is about where I think a good starting point. Brands like Feal suspension or BC Coilovers typically start there.

      @@jaydenray2803 Yeah, I'm on BC Racing for da Stang, it runs fine for now. Anything was better than my literal lack of functioning struts/control arms on my Driver's side (Cause duh, a truck slammed into it). Hey Bladed, great video! I also wanted to point out that hydraulic suspension in road cars does more than raise and lower for bumps. For instance, on my CL63 AMG, it virtually eliminates body roll through turns. This gives the vehicle much more stability, control, and just a more sporty feeling when driving hard, without necessarily giving up a comfortable ride.

    Side note about the Magneride part: Tein makes an active suspension kit for their coilovers (EDFC Actice) which perform similarly in theory, being able to adjust damping on the fly. Since the system runs of a g-sensor and a GPS speed sensor for some versions, it's nowhere near as advanced as Magneride, but still an impressive feat of engineering for what it is imo

    I have mag ride on my 05 Cadillac STS4 it’s amazing. The nice thing about MRC is that they can last forever as long as the seals last. My car is almost 20 years old and still has factory suspension. I’m going to replace them anyway because they are kinda rusty now. But still don’t leak! I can also adjust on the fly the suspension stiffness from touring to performance.

    I drive a 2001 Mx5. I have Eibach pro line lowering springs and Bilstein B6 dampers. This paired with some Whiteline antiroll bars and 17 inch rims running Michelin pilot sport 5’s, it makes for a wonderful ride on street. It’s very firm yet also smooth over bumps. Not magnetic suspension smooth, but absolutely one of the best regular old damper designs I’ve ever felt.
    Honestly I’d recommend against coilovers for street cars as most coilovers are just way too stiff. If you’re building a track car then coilovers all the way, but for street I’d advise getting some nice dampers and springs. I’ve done coilovers on cars before and while yes the handling is amazing, the ride will suck ass.

    5:45 Really?! Hmmmm 🤔
    Well here are some facts. There are some big disadvantages.
    1. They are meant to adjust and due to road junk they might not be able to adjust because of road junk getting stuck like small rocks and salt and so on and they are really hard to get clean out or you can't all together.
    2. To adjust them is very annoying and to do it properly is very annoying. But because the standard in the United States is well it's good enough looks like you really don't care about something being A+.
    3. Some aftermarket companies will not sell you replacement parts if you wanted the units or small pieces was to go bad or get defective. You would have to buy the whole set of four.

      For a Stingray? Not that much. You can get coilovers for like $2K then either install them yourself or get a shop to do it for like $600 then get it aligned after.
      For a Z06 with Magneride? In your dreams!! Someone wrote a forum thread saying, "I started with a beautiful Z06 that rode great, but ended up with $10K worth of Suspension to ride like a POS". A Z06 w/ magneride will need to have it's magneride deleted (A lot of Labor cost) and also buy a system to stop the computer from freaking out it's magneride isn't get a reading. Then for parts to replace the leaf springs and dual wishbone assembly with Coilovers and Struts will cost $3.3K MINIMUM (Yes cheaper ones exist, but they will ride worse than OEM, if you're going to Coils, your goal is to be Same or BETTER). Then labor, then a lot of other frustrations, mayber $3K more, and compatibility later, it doesn't change the fact the C7 chassis isn't meant to be on Coils to begin with. It rides horribly. IMO it's not worth giving up Magneride Leaf Springs since they surprisingly beat most Aftermarket Coilover setups..i hope this helped. Don't throw $10K like the guy on the forum did...only to ride worse than stock!

    10:03 There is specifically designed air suspension to combat this problem?

      For insane prices, yes. I mention cups as well as "Track Focused Bag systems", but still say "A Coilover setup for track will be cheaper".
      I can't physically stop someone from racing on bags, but I've seen friends blow them on Lanier Raceplex and Road Atlanta...what happens to their bank account next isn't pretty.
      I'd rather blow a coil, OE strut, or shock, than an air system.

    I’m 15 and I just got my first car 2 weeks ago but I have to buy everything I want to do to my car with my own money so for my first ever build ill have to unfortunately run lowering springs

    Bladed gotta ask which is better, Harder Springs or Softer springs when using MacPherson Struts and Coil Springs
    My Family still has their 97 Lancer and my uncle recently changed the suspension springs to a more softer kind

      Softer is better for cruising, Harder is better for racing. You can just get a progressive spring so it softens when cruising, but stiffens when you accelerate or corner.
      IMO if you want to choose between the two, get coil overs. always the most foolproof way to have a choice instead of buying two different springs based on situation.
