The unreliability from turbos comes from the added mechanical parts and the increased oil consumption to lubricate them. Indeed, adding them together, it is natural to assume that this would decrease reliability - more moving parts = more points of failure, after all, right? Problem is, modern turbos, especially for Japanese cars, aren't the same as old turbos. They spool up much faster and nearly eliminate the turbo lag with either clever construction or additional gadget wizardry, and aren't reportedly *that* much more unreliable.
Also the advantage for superchargers in racing isn't quite as one-sided as you made it out to be. Obviously, coming out of corners, the driver would keep the engine revs rather high to exploit the high power coming out of turns, and this is the norm for any engine, whether N/A, turbo or supercharged. In fact, I'd wager that with good driving technique and gearing, turbo cars can just as easily smoke supercharged cars out of corners.
[constant edits while watching the video]
The Zenvo's problem was from both the fuel system and the cooling system causing a fire. While boosting can increase temperatures significantly, on its own it doesn't contribute to reliability - remember, an engine needs more than just a set of pistons to work properly, and any small problems can cascade into bigger problems.
I still enjoy your content, Bladed, but this one comes just a little bit biased. You're not wrong in explaining most of this stuff, just a bit exaggerated :P

@@Slipknot2RIP no because some engines have bigger turbos than others.. It's the technology put into new turbochargers that helps eliminate some of the problems that the older ones had by putting in much lighter and better components like compressor wheels, better and more efficient materials for the exducer to hold heat more efficiently and inducer to flow more cool air into the turbo to help it spool faster and easier, and stuff like that.. It's more than just big or small man... Besides, sometimes small turbos can be worse than bigger ones as they can choke the up top engine power because they run out of steam quicker than bigger ones which leave more room to be pushed further

  • @ilsirent9726
    @ilsirent9726 4 года назад +4

I believe that better gas mileage is achieved by small turbocharged engines is because they behave and perform as a NA engines of same displacement as long as you are using your throttle gently and alter it's position slow (as you do at the constant speed on the highway).

One of the few Twin Charged mass produced vehicles was the VW Scirocco 1.4TSI (158BHP). Same 1.4l engine as the regular TSI found in many other VAG models but they added a magnetic supercharger to improve power at low RPMs and overall efficiency. VW decides to put-off the twin-charging model claiming it added $100 of extra cost per unit, and made a significant impact on the firm's financial situation.

Halleluja, someone actually names the child by its name, there is no twin turbo or by turbo, only sequential and parallel configurations.
Also, a turbocharged engine are actually used for enviromental reason, namely reduction of CO2 emmissions by reducing fuel consumption at roughtly the same or higher power level than a natural aspiration engines. That's why diesel engines are turbocharged, they need lean mixtures, therefor a lot of airflow and they need high combustion chamber pressure for self ignition and a turbocharger gives you this with the advantage of lower starting torque needed for the starter motor.
Also, you forgot to mention compound turbochargers, often found on WW2 bomber aircraft or Semi trucks. It basically is a turbochager bolted to the crankshaft (the compressor as well as the turbine wheel), basically to regain the exhaust energy directly.

a few points from someone who has been daily driving forced induction for several years:
first off the best application for a turbo charger is in cars that make loads of torque, but prefer to run at low RPM, this mitigates the lag, while broadening your power band significantly.
second point is that your statement about reliability is laughable. Diesel engines are designed to be reliable and last forever and ever since people discovered that turbocharging a Diesel engine has literally no practical downside, they have been making turbochargers that can match the reliability of a diesel engine.
third point is that forced induction increases risk of engine knock in engines that are designed to have fuel in the cylinder outside of the combustion step, which is why introducing forced induction to a gas powered car should only be done by experts.
fourth point is that i'd say leave turbo chargers to diesel engines, they benefit more and suffer none of the downsides, super chargers are better for gas engines since boost is more linear (and thus predictable) and gas engines tend to need the boost more at lower RPMs anyway.

Centrifugal is not the best of both worlds, it is the worst of both worlds.
It has the negative of a supercharger (parasitic losses) and not the positive (instant boost/low end torque)
It has the negative of a turbo (no low end power) and not the positive of a turbo (it not using engine power to be driven).
Also, a turbo is way more efficient than a centri, because the mere fact that the turbo creates boost means it also creates more exhaust gasses..... which then means more boost etc etc etc.
The turbo doesn't rob power and in a way kinda powers itself (of course it doesn't really power itself, but you know what i mean).

-When ford first marketed the ecoboost, they promised both power AND fuel-efficiency, and I laughed because even then I knew about the double-edged sword of turbochargers. Sure enough, people were complaining that their ecoboost actually got WORSE mileage than their old V8. Knowing how most people have shitty throttle control and constantly lay on the gas pedal, I was not shocked. The reason cars have electronic throttle nannies nowadays is because people suck at managing how they drive.
-Turbo lag is best explained with a basic lesson in pneumatics. A turbo is kinda like an air compressor system: On the intake side, the pump (turbo compressor wheel) builds pressure in the tank (empty volume between turbo outlet and intake valves). On the exhaust side, the air hose (exhust from exhaust valves to turbo inlet) feeds pressurized air to power the air tool (turbo turbine) in engaging whatever action that tool does (power the compressor). Turbos are weird in that, they kinda power themselves, almost like a feedback loop. Exhaust powers the turbine, which spools the compressor, which builds intake pressure, which powers the engine and goes to the exhaust, which powers the turbine even more, and so on, and so on. That power increase is almost exponential, which is why there's a sudden noticeable surge of power, and turbo lag is the low end of that exponential curve where the turbo needs to make the power to get into that steeper part of the curve. Hybrid turbos like the ever-common t3/t4 try to remedy this dead-spot with a smaller turbine that takes less exhaust power to spool, another approach is the sequential turbos like you mentioned (first heard about these on Top Gear when they showcased the BMW that used it).
-Isn't it funny that automakers market turbo cars as being more "eco-friendly" and "fuel-efficient", because in theory they could be, but pragmatically they aren't, so when most people buy them them they not only do worse for the environment, but they waste more money on gas AND put more lining in automakers' pockets. This is why we need more scientists, chemists, engineers, etc, and fewer professional activists, that way we have more people capable of solving problems and fewer people complaining about them.
-Pretty straightforward, superchargers have instant boost but are tied to engine rpms so their power curve is linear and caps off a lot lower than turbos. For this reason, superchargers are best for applications like drag racing or short track racing (lots of corners), where the relative speed/distance is lower, as opposed to the standing mile or long tracks with straightaways, where a turbo is better suited.
-To be fair to the Zenvo, Ferraris and Lamborghinis catch on fire all the time. A hot engine in close quarters with a carbon fiber chassis is walking the razor's edge.

Though one fact: turbochargers on diesels are completely different. On petrol engines the AFR is constant (with small tweaks from the ECU of course) while on diesels, the AFR is lean most of the time (assuming you don't keep the pedal glued to the floor) which means diesel is burned very well and efficiently. If you don't add a turbo on a diesel there would be very low power, but if to compensate you enriched the AFR, you would make it inefficient (main purpose of a diesel is efficiency), pollute more and wont get much more out of it, yet if you add a turbo, you could in fact make barely any boost and just try to get to a 29:1 AFR (full throttle) and that way, you would get a more efficient burn, as a result more power and also less pollution.
