When it comes to "best" vs "favourite", I would add that it can also be used to show that while something sounds very interesting, varied and thoughtful, that it doesn't hit the right tone for you. I can appreciate TPAB, but I don't like the overall structure. That doesn't mean that me rating it as 3 stars is the same as me rating a genuinely uninteresting album as 3 stars, because TPAB definitely left an impact - however, I don't feel like returning to the album, which means it's definitely not my favourite, but interesting enough that I can understand why other people love it.
"If you claim to love music, listen to it like you do" That's honestly so real, I loved the points and ideas you brought up here and the transitions were great :)
i think 'objectivity' comes with the recognition that *your* personal experience with a piece of music is so vastly different and unique to *you* only. like one of my favorite kanye albums is donda. personally because it came to my life at a point that i needed that spirituality and message. that lived experience, for me, is enough for it to 'cover' for its 'faults'. like i recognize the album *IS* super long, but that's one of its charms to me. on a 'universal standard', one where we can all agree on something, i think saying my beautiful dark twisted fantasy as one of ye's most polished and extravagant isn't a lie at all. i don't know where i'm going with this honestly, but the ability to separate these various, complex factors isn't all so bad in my eyes (i do recognize how harmful it can be when taken to its extremes though; i think a healthy balance is needed) edit: i also think objectivity serves as a bridge to close the gap between personal experience *and* context you CANNOT ignore. dropout is one of the biggest rap debuts of all time, my beautiful dark twisted fantasy is one of the greatest comeback albums in ANY genre, jesus is king is a legendary artist's first real 'slump' with how lazily arranged and quickly put out it was. you can't ignore that stuff, your brain's gonna want to take that all into account.
I think one of the original questions of favorite vs best can also come from how you are consuming the art. I think this happens most in rap like you said because so much if it is also a medium of storytelling and writing and poetry and you can have a separation between what music is most sonically fun to listen to, what you enjoy listening to most, vs what music is the most intellectually stimulating and makes you think and engage with greater concepts. Music I think is the most entrenched in this duality because the baseline experience of most music is sonic enjoyment. The patterns and melodies and rhythms and chord progressions being fun and enjoyable. But you have that contrasted by the greater meanings and impacts and feelings of the art and what its doing and saying and how impactful or successful or interesting you find that to be. Both sides of this are different and both sides are not objective, but the second, the intellectual/artistic side, is a lot more intellectually expressible, which I think is why you have that dichotomy. Love the video.
21:32 Wait, how is that statement different from saying that those who don't like your favourite albums simply don't "get it"? Especially when you mention the refreshing sounds it kind of reminds me of what you touched on about objectivity in art - the way you describe these new artists it sounds a lot more like it's a fact that they are innovative and thus disliked and not like your personal relation to their music due to your lived experiences. Not meant as a dig at you, I'm just genuinely curious because that part sounds a bit wrong compared to the rest of the video.
The way i see the objectivity thing w music is that what people see as objectivity is in itself subjective. Let's say my favorite kendrick albul is Morale cause i love listening to songs like N95 & Silent Hill & topics like mental health matter a lot to me and i resonate with the message on personal level. However, I claim that TPAB is his best regardless, giving the more lush production, Kendricks amazing writing and the powerful message of the album as the reasons. The differemce between my feelings on the records is that I like Morale more cause of personal enjoyment and i say TPAB is his best cause of my idea of what good music needs to be. In the case of morale i use my "listener brain" and for TPAB i use my "critic brain" Personally i try to use my critic brain as well as my listener brain to justify my feelings on my fav music and i don't make this distinction being "favorite" and "best"
Oh, I still have a big problem with really giving music the proper time that it probably deserves . I have hundreds of albums that, pretty much, are erased from my memory and that sucks . Great video tho ❤❤❤
Great vid! I got way more into music and got myself into musictwt about year ago now and from my experience, omg it’s so fucking boring! The pop stans are just obsessed with charts and most of hip hop twt is just kids born in 2008 and 9 saying shit like “The Life Of Pablo is a 10. W or L” like why do you care if others agree with you, just have your opinion and stand your ground with it. Also the lack of articulation is sad; what I mean by that is again as you said, people just throw numbers but I never see these people talk about why they love the album so much irl and online, idk if everyone is just introverted now but I feel like people today just really hate expressing the stuff they love in fear of being judged. For example my friend listens to K-Pop and her other friends who are goths who listen to metal made fun of her for so he thought I’d be the same, but no I encouraged her and she literally has like a room just full of cds, vinyl, books, posters and memorabilia of this fucking K-Pop band and you haven’t shown it to anyone???? It also made me try out K-Pop after blindly hating with me actually liking some of the stuff, but my point is that I just wish people shared their interests without giving a fuck you know? Long comment I know but I just felt like saying it. I can’t wait to upload my 5.4K word essay on my favourite album of all time that literally nobody knows or would care about. 😂
I realised I forgot to leave this comment so woops 😵💫 I think I can relate to both sides of this discussion: I LOVE post malone's latest album Austin, even though it is widely regarded to be one of his worst, it came out around the time where I needed to hear it and it still makes me happy listening to it, but every time i mention my love for that album I just get responds by saying "mid" or "L take" Meanwhile if I take a different album "Damn." By Kendrick Lamar. I am very vocal about me not enjoying this album, but I do have to admit that, I sometimes just hate too much even when I dont want to. Like I feel like I should just be able to say "Meh I dont really like it" and not tweet about it but for some reason I do, which is something that this video has really brought to my attention. I'd also like to talk about the negativity vs positivity thing, I think you're mostly right in the observation you made, this is why I think it's so cool to do something like a "song of the day" or a monthly track roundup, or whatever. I see it as a cool way to spread positivity, and while they don't get the most amount of likes, I feel like those types of posts hit the audience they're supposed to hit (aka people that like the music I pick). Overall VERY accurate observation and very confronting to realise that I fall victim to the same things 🤯🤯
The only reason I could say I don’t like when an artist kindve blows up and inflates their fanbase (what people call normies) is how it affects shows. The underscores show is the most fun show I’ve ever been to cuz every person there knew every song and genuinely adored April, compared to quannnic or brakence, where the audiences at those shows were very dead for every song except the one or two they did know. Otherwise ofc I’m glad an artist I love is successful
Oh I didn’t even get to your concert section before I wrote this. I agree that there are fanbases that are ass for being so elitist, like although Jane remover’s shows have all been fun for me her fanbase is vile on Twitter
Personally, I like number ratings - not because I want to use those as arguments or anything, but I like the benefit of being able to show someone very easily what kind of music I enjoy. There's no point in arguing what score should be assigned to a piece of music, however, it can inform other people of your general attitude towards it and what you would recommend. And instead of having to tell someone how I feel about 300 albums, I'd rather show my ratings for others to get a perspective into my type of music. And if the other person happens to find some ratings interesting, it can also be a great conversation opener. So instead of "Chroma Velocity is not a 10 bro" it can become "Why did you rate Chroma Velocity a 10?" - to which I'll gladly respond with maybe too much text :) Also, I just love statistics.
I can’t wait for the day people realize music objectivity isn’t real and that their own opinions aren’t gospel. It feels like these aren’t even “communities” but more cutthroat competitions to see who has the “best” opinions, and therefore who is the most “superior” it seems. It’s so annoying and has really ruined a lot of online discussion for me.
Thank you for releasing this video, It has made me think and I got to stop being a rymcel

God I feel the "pipe down ___ fan" SO HARD considering I like things people boil down to 'tiktok music'
Like what happened to just listening to music
Guess I'm too old to even understand what "pipe down ___ fan" even means. Probably a rizz issue on my end (gyatt).
thank you for this
you're sooo right sammy
