This mindset shift from prioritizing yourself over what you need to do is seen in a lot of anime about selfishness. I feel like at the heart of blue lock and jujutsu kaisen, it is not about being selfish in the sense of a superiority complex, but about consistently growing with each mistake you make and allowing yourself to follow your heart instead of getting caught anything else, like how talented you are when you first start. I feel like talent is overemphasized, probably to manipulate people into a way of thinking that makes them easier to control. This was a valuable video with great insights. One of the best videos I've seen on RUclips in a really long time, truly an incredible work. From your story about your family, your childhood skill list, to your discussions on capitalism, skill building, and the feeling associated with it - I appreciate that you trusted in what you had to say enough not to cut it down, and allowed yourself to tell your story with full detail. It was incredibly immersive and I came away from this video feeling so much. Thank you for taking the time to share your work with us. I am looking forward to your next project, whenever that may be.
I resonate with a lot of the reflections and insight you share here as a skill learner and creative. I'm amazed at how glued to the screen I am. It is not often a video essay channel dares to tackle so many topics and effortlessly thread them together with such ease and skill to remain fully entertaining throughout. Also the first chapter is really original and well made.
11:35 It kind of sounds like your grandma herself liked art and wanted to be an artist but had to abandon it to survive, and when she saw you making art she instinctively wanted to save you from the pain of having to abandon it by keeping you from developing an interest in it early on. She might have even done it unintentionally as a reflex
i woke up at 6am to see my laptop playing this video, immediately intrigued, I rewinded the video to the beginning to hear what it had to say. I've never resonated more to a youtube video in my life. Thanks for the encouragement
I'm starting to feel like the algorithm is designed to do exactly this... Provide you with one good video ever so often to keep you looking forward to the next while you watch all the other low quality click bait stuff...
Indeed! And agreed @anthonysmith1228! And every one good video I get nowadays, are unironically about the some sort of subject seemingly… with the theme of generally being a gen z’er or someone else trying to adjust into being an adult with all that’s going on… cutting through the bullshit essentially, and trying desperately to fight against the algorithm and the system at large…failing merely because the system is made to be as curated as possible for the sake of retaining viewers indefinitely…
I did not expect finding such an inspiring, well-made video by randomly clicking on a YT recommendation out of curiosity. It's really impressive that this is your first video essay. The time, effort and passion that went into making it really show. Also, it's great to hear that, despite the adversities in your childhood, you've become such a positive, intelligent and sensible person instead of becoming bitter and hateful. Thank you for sharing your story and experience with us.

Thank you for making an impact on me and motivating me more to continue learning, building my art skills and/or any other skill i may want to pick up. I loved every second of this video essay. Thank you.
My mother started to learning painting academically at 50+ when our family have enough money and now she is professional with her own exhibitions and auctions. I was fortunate enough to have opportunity to learn English, chinese and a bit of Icelandic and Spanish in my spare time. It is like a gym for my brain, whatever I need to learn for my not language related job I can learn easily because skill of learning stuff translates to most of possible areas.
Also regarding to new tools - man, when I started chinese and english I only had paper book dictionaries and had to stop studying because my fingers were bleeding a bit from turning the pages. Gods bless modern translating apps
I'm really blown away by this. Amazing storytelling that not only kept me invested throughout but was also relatable in many ways. The editing and overall composition of the video was superb - it's crazy that this was your first video essay. Thank you for sharing this, I really appreciate you
I love your work so much. Initially I had it for some background for work and ended up doing absolutely nothing of that work because all my attention was diverted to that masterpiece. I really like the way you form phrases and your voice, intonation. I see and admire quantity of work that has been put into this essay, and it's so great. You speak so well, I genuinely almost cried at the end. It surprises me so much that a person can perceive skills as 100% innate, but this has a lot to do with the culture in which I grew up, of course. I am so glad that you have become who you are now and have given us such a wonderful video. I wish you well and let's beat capital together 🙏🏻❤
I thought this gonna be like "deep breath u can do it I learned this and that..." but no its an actual piece of lore and its so good I wasn't even skipping, the story telling is really well put

Thank you for sharing. I've been working on creating as much as I can the last 4-5ish months after taking a long break for many years, and it has been life changing. this video goes straight to my favorites playlist so i can watch it when i feel like my perfectionism devours me. thank you for creating this, i usually don't watch long videos but this was both relatable and fun for me.
Thanks for making this, it felt like watching into an strangers soul, wow, incredible stuff, the narrating, the animations, the really cool and experimental in-game cinematography. I have seen so many video essays, and most of them were good. This feels transcendental, the approach is holistic, this isn't someone who is incredibly good at one or two particular skills, this is a show of true freedom and curiosity, the fuck around and find out mentality. The whole thing is more than an essay, it even kinda left me like a teenager after reading/watching/playing something with a revolutionary message. I don't even write comments, but I had to. It has touched me and made me feel seen.
To think that this video which appeared in my recommended page several times and I dismissed as "just another video about learning/video games" to then crying at the ending was a humbling experience. ❤

There's that one Catcher in the Rye quote; “What really knocks me out is a book that, when you're all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours" I think it sums up this entire video really well
of all my years in youtube… the hours I've spent watching videos… & only now for the first time in my life I have watched a video & said "this is my favorite video of all I've ever seen." thank you for opening up about your family, your life, & your journey.
SO glad I watched the whole video. I grew up playing video games which made this very relatable, and have always been intimidated by learning difficult things. My school experience turned me off from learning new/difficult things unfortunately, but the skill of learning is so important in life. I appreciate the time and effort you put into this (and the humor lol). Thank you!

This video is such a master piece both in the words that you're saying but also visually. Ive never seem visual storytelling like this before and it's genuinely so entertaining and fun. Also every now and then I think of how much fun/ skill/ effort/ passion you put into making it. I literally have no idea what any of these clips are but this is just so fun I love it.
This was fantastic, thank you for making it! Got a big laugh during the list of skills to learn segment and the in-engine clips from Skyrim and Fallout were really cool too!
I’m glad that people who grew up in circumstances like you did now have this resource. Your breakdown to the absolute fundamentals (skill points = minutes 🤯) is great. Thank you for sharing your vulnerability and for presenting learning and skills in the context of people’s lived realities.
bro I love this type of video so much it is at the same time well produced but so casual that it feels like you're just listening to a friend give an interesting monologue
This video and its earnest message and overall CHOPS has compelled me to speak. This essay is beautiful. It captures the journey of learning perfectly and puts poignant spins on well trodden topics in ways that refreshes their messages. Such knowledge and kindness should beget the same: "Autodidact" is the english word for "self-taught person" which is what you are and have been inspiring. Good job getting this far! Pray continue spending your minutes with aplomb!
Man, far from being an essay, this video was already a story on it's own. I really learned a lot from this. It made me glad that I've stumbled upon all these gems really early in my life. I'm still exploring life as it is, and I hope I can continue improving my art and learning more creative skills as well. Atleast, it's because I promised my younger self to make a story of my own. This video really helped me cherish that again, so thanks. The "minutes" I spent watching this will surely come in handy. Please do create more art like these, and I do hope I can support other artists/creators like you someday!
This was so good, absolute best video I've seen in a long time. I resonate with the skill issue. It's hard to do or make anything when life and society is the way it is. But I hope making videos works out for you, and that everybody who watched this can work for the skills we want to have. Better what feels late than never. (oh and using Skyrim and Fallout as a vehicle to tell the tragic tales of your family and upbringing was *wild*, I loved it)
This is one of the most powerful and soulful essays I've ever experienced. The way your topic unearths such deep themes through family history is something I was not expecting.
The idea that video games could introduce the concept of skill building is refreshing because I feel woefully unequipped to impart this lesson to my 6 yo son.
Genuinely one of the best videos on the platform. This is what RUclips is all about, personal, high quality, interesting videos. I’m going to go and give some of my minutes to one of my hobbies now!
This is one of the best videos I've ever watched/listened to. Such a raw and authentic human experience told and portrayed in an easy to understand way, wrapped in caution and hope. The Skyrim animations are the cherry on top!
Your narration gave me the nudge to recognize the current skills I have, and to figure out what I should learn next. I tend to get choice paradox, and begin to self-doubt. I hope I will ignore my inner mind telling me this isn’t a good idea, while cultivating and nourishing new or old skills for my future self. Thank you for making the video essay. I enjoyed it immensely.

One of the best storytelling video in a year
bro i think you figuratively saved my life a little bit w/ this one
11:35
It kind of sounds like your grandma herself liked art and wanted to be an artist but had to abandon it to survive, and when she saw you making art she instinctively wanted to save you from the pain of having to abandon it by keeping you from developing an interest in it early on. She might have even done it unintentionally as a reflex
i woke up at 6am to see my laptop playing this video, immediately intrigued, I rewinded the video to the beginning to hear what it had to say. I've never resonated more to a youtube video in my life. Thanks for the encouragement
I'm glad we have RUclips to serve our needs, like providing us a space to work through generational trauma via video game RP.
Wow, this is some blessing from the RUclips algorithm.
Don't shill RUclips's sloppy algorithm. Praise the creator of the video, instead
I'm from Spain, and this is kind of the mentality that a whole lot of my family had. Amazing video, keep them coming.
i don't really know what to say, this is the best christmas gift anyone could ask for. you're giving a lot of people the biggest gift of their lives right now. thank you endlessly from a frustrated struggling musician who is losing hope, you breathed a lot of air into me once more. i am grateful and eternally indebted.
With this video, you literally proven me that a RUclips video can turn into art. Your technique of delivering information with adding stories in them is great. Hope you continue to do this more. Thanks for encouragement man, thank you. It was a great pleasure.
I'm super grateful you made this video specifically for me.
I thought this gonna be like "deep breath u can do it I learned this and that..." but no its an actual piece of lore and its so good I wasn't even skipping, the story telling is really well put
Man, your video is a masterpiece, you must put so much effort into it.
Thank you so much!
I shed a tear at the end of this vid. Story of your family is very sad and instructive. I started watch it because i am learning english by yt and u really motivated me keep going. I wish u the best in your life journey. Thanks you.
This is just a video everyone needs to watch it’s actually really nice
Wow. I was floored when you said this was your first video essay. I also cried when you shared your stories about your family grinding themselves to dust, and how you wanted to break that cycle. Thank you for sharing. I've been working on creating as much as I can the last 4-5ish months after taking a long break for many years, and it has been life changing. Watching this video really made me realize why. Subbed, looking forward to more of your work!
Massive respect for the amount of time, energy, and effort you put into this video. Leaving a comment to hope that the 'engagement' boosts ya a bit in the algo.
This is actually the best video I've seen in a long time. Good storytelling and a great message with beautiful editing and visuals.
I mean, I was just watching videos about drawing and painting. This was so much more than I signed up for, but I am here for it. Bravo!
this video goes straight to my favorites playlist so i can watch it when i feel like my perfectionism devours me. thank you for creating this, i usually don't watch long videos but this was both relatable and fun for me.
This video made me cry, and laugh, and smile. Thank you.
To think that this video which appeared in my recommended page several times and I dismissed as "just another video about learning/video games" to then crying at the ending was a humbling experience. ❤
I can wholeheartedly say this is one of the most useful and well-made videos I've seen on this platform. Thank you for this, Sane Retry.
This is fantastically written with great humor and a great message, I can’t believe how many views it has. Thanks for uploading this!
this video made me cry several times. out of sadness and also hopefullness. thank you for this.
amazing video, already the most viewed on your channel.
I'm expecting this to blow up further in the coming weeks, sometimes the algorithm does a good job
Bro...I almost don't want to finish the video, you've already captivated me in the first few minutes! The amount of flaming hatred and raw passion just makes a wide grin paste over my face. I'm so excited to finish this!!
Literally one of my favorite videos ive seen. I was not expecting this at all when I clicked on it. Keep doing what you do man, this is amazing!
i’ve come to a lot of the same realizations later on in life, you worded everything so conversationally and gracefully, i’m happy with the time i gave this video, and while i wish i had seen this video when i was in my twenties, im glad it’s here for other younger people to learn from
There's that one Catcher in the Rye quote;
“What really knocks me out is a book that, when you're all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours"
I think it sums up this entire video really well
of all my years in youtube… the hours I've spent watching videos… & only now for the first time in my life I have watched a video & said "this is my favorite video of all I've ever seen." thank you for opening up about your family, your life, & your journey.
moved to tears. thank you for uploading this.
I was never this engaged and interested. Its late at night and I cant stop watching. This video is masterpiece. Thank you!
Thank you!
Pixar pitching Toy Story 6 be like: 16:48
In seriousness, I'm only about 1/5 in of this video essay and I absolutely love how you edit and compose shots from video games to retell your family's story. Can't wait to sit down and watch the rest of this.
Not my adult self going back in time to tell my child self to focus on drawing feet and fur textures.
bro I love this type of video so much it is at the same time well produced but so casual that it feels like you're just listening to a friend give an interesting monologue
(oh and using Skyrim and Fallout as a vehicle to tell the tragic tales of your family and upbringing was *wild*, I loved it)
❤
This is one of the most powerful and soulful essays I've ever experienced. The way your topic unearths such deep themes through family history is something I was not expecting.
"A blur of hassles and chores, marked by the occasional catastrophe" Wow bro that hit hard. This was a amazing bro, a magnus opus.
Tom Cruise came across your journal in a parallel timeline, and thought it was an index of Skills to Learn.
54:41 You might get to this, but the neat thing about losing a skill is the fact that you gain it back way faster.
Yep 100%, you never truly forget something
wow, I definitely wouldn't have guessed that this is your first video essay. It was reall good and I really like your style of narration!
This is beautiful. Silly, sad, moving, inspirational. It's human. Thanks for making, it was wonderful watching.
This is one of the best videos I've ever watched/listened to.
Such a raw and authentic human experience told and portrayed in an easy to understand way, wrapped in caution and hope.
The Skyrim animations are the cherry on top!
This video is amazing man. PLEASE MAKE MORE
This was already the best video I've seen on this site in a looong time, then the chapter 2 titlecard hit. Good work my guy
