On August 28, 2021, dispatch advised they received a 911 hang-up call in Rice Lake, WI. Officers responded to the address and a female stated her husband had a drinking problem and wouldn’t leave her alone. She further mentioned he had a revoked license and drove off while possibly being under the influence. He was later located at a gas station where officers ordered him out of his vehicle. Instead, he ignored them, locked the doors, and pondered an escape plan.

Gave up drinking after my wife looked at me one night when I was in the bottom of a bottle and she told me that she didn’t see “me” anymore that I was a shell of the man she married and I wasn’t the father my kids needed. After that I realized I was in a low point and I sat the bottle down and haven’t picked it up in a year and a half. Sometimes a person needs to see how low they truly are before they admit their problem and get help.

The struggle is real. I'm the ex-husband of an alcoholic/addict. 23 years together. Her last relapse was the worst I've ever seen. I've had emergency custody of our 2 kids since March. She still fights, lashes out, plays a victim and minimizes her actions. Her parents enable her behavior. Our teenage daughter doesn't want to see her. Our son can see her as long as it's supervised. I really wish she would stop hurting the family and get some real help. I'm going bankrupt with attorneys. Felt good letting that out. Happy to see so many comments from people who have "been there" living a sober life. Gives me hope.

Here's another example: In 1977, a beautiful young 20 yr old woman was killed by a drunk driver in Corpus Christi, TX, one day after receiving her Associate's Degree in Computer Science and accepting a full scholarship for her baccalaureate degree. Forty-six years later, there is no "getting over" or 'closure"--that's a myth. The drunk driver went on to live a happy life, but our family is still serving a life sentence of grief and loss.

No shame in having this disease. I also struggled with this horrible addiction. I have been sober and clean for almost 12 years. It is a disease not a character flaw. Sadly, shame goes with this sickness. I had people tell me if I was a real man all I had to do was just stop drinking. I was to,d that I had weak willpower and needed to just toughen up and quit. I had a Doctor explain to me that willpower has nothing to do with it. He gave me this example which has stuck with me. He said “tell those who say just quit to go purchase a bottle of Milk of Magnesium and drink the whole bottle. Then tell them to use willpower to not shit their pants. If they can do that then I can buy their willpower theory. You have much to be proud of for being able to quit and break the cycle. Let go of the “shame “ idea ! You have a disease and holding on to that thought of shame instead increases you chances of relapse.
Be proud of where you are at No where you have been.

You are worthy of so much.
My mom grew up in an alcoholic home. Her parents were violent. My grandfather would drive her and her siblings around town while he was drunk, accidents happened, people on bikes were hit, grandpa blacked out many times, one time he was in jail and due to it being a small bayou town in Louisiana, my pawpaw was friends with the jailers, they gave him a cigarette in his cell and he almost *BURNED THE WHOLE JAIL DOWN!*

He comes across as a raging covert narcissist. It’s alarming, I escaped (literally in the middle of the night) from someone like this two months ago. It’s not WHAT they say, it’s HOW they say it…the demeanor, smart-ass, controlling (yet Im-the victim) behavior. No amount of therapy will help the vast majority of people like this. Especially people like this who also use substances. Not changing…he probably caused a lot more pain in his life that he endured. Just sayin.

Most of my dad's side of the family are either heavy drinkers, or alcoholics, and I always promised myself if I ever felt the *need* for a drink, I'd dump out everything in the place and never touch the stuff again. I count myself supremely lucky that I've never felt that need, and I applaud all of those who took that first huge step to sobriety after fighting their addictions. Much respect.

My father died from heart failure from drinking. Doctors told him he had to quit drinking cause his heart was failing and he told them he couldn’t stop. He would go to work and come home and immediately start drinking until 1 or 2 in the morning. He eventually lost consciousness and went without breathing for too long and ended up brain dead and we had to make the decision to remove all life support and let him go. This is why I will never drink. He never got to meet my son and I will not do that to my son when he is older.

I'm sorry about that man. Just to let you know, there are many sons and daughters of alcoholics and drug addicts that are in your shoes. Children of alcoholic and drug-addicted parents usually hate the stuff that killed their parents and made their childhood more difficult.
You know first hand what alcohol does. I know firsthand what drugs do as well. However, It's our own sons and daughters we need to worry about. They also carry the gene of addiction, and they need to see firsthand what that stuff does.
Alcoholism and drug addiction often skips a generation due to the sober parent shielding their kids from the evils and results of addiction. Then the kids get curious and may start an addiction since they are prone to the addiction itself.
My cousin's dad died from a fatty liver, hepatitis, and cirrhosis due to drinking. He doesn't drink, and he always preached to his kids about how alcohol and drugs destroy lives. But kids usually dont take the message seriously.
One day, he did over-hear his 14-year old kid talking about going to a party with alcohol. So they both (with his other son, who is 11 years old) went to skid row in LA to talk with the addicts there. They were actually very encouraging and candid when speaking to them- most were people who had sound mind and body before they tried drugs, and their rampant drug use brought forth drig-induced psychosis and other mental illness. that trip proved effective because it scared the crap outta those kids.

I endured many struggles growing up. I was addicted to alcohol during my adulthood years and barely survived cocaine, and I hit rock bottom in all of life aspects financially, physically, relationship, career etc. I'm very lucky that I have met my Muslim neighbor in Brooklyn who saw me breaking down one day and was by my side and never left me as if I'm his brother. I'm very thankful that I decided to go to the Mosque and converted to Islam. I've got my life purpose back now I'm married and I have a beautiful daughter and I'm financially stable and more than ever mentally and spiritually stable. It's the five prayers. It's Allah. Never trust the media and what has been said about Islam. Politics is a dirty business and all they cared about is money. As someone who grew up with an addict for a mother, i can say without a doubt that alcohol was by far the worst and most destructive. She had always smoked weed, shot up cocaine, took pills, etc. but she never was much of a drinker until I was in my 20s. She had went to rehab and stopped using cocaine but then just switched her addiction to alcohol and became an alcoholic. She deteriorated so fast. The alcohol was WAY worse than the cocaine or pills. She had a major stroke a little over a year ago and now she’s in a nursing home. She’ll never recover. It’s really sad. The crazy thing is that after a year of being in the nursing home and not having access to alcohol, cigarettes, weed, etc., she looks better than I’ve seen her in many many years. She has color to her face and her eyes are bright….you can tell she’s had a stroke bc she’s completely paralyzed on one side and her mouth droops on that side but she still looks more healthy than I’ve seen her in a long time, maybe ever.

In that way we begin to heal the guilt and shame that haunted us and which would inevitably send us back to the bottle if left unaddressed. My best is advice don’t ever drink not even one time. Because even if it feels good and you have a fun time that one time you have no idea how you are playing a dangerous game that can lead you so far down that you’ll think I wish I would have never ever ever taken one sip of alcohol. Life isn’t like The Hangover movie. When bad crap goes down while you’re drunk there are actual legal consequences that can destroy your life forever even if from the outside it wasn’t like you got in an accident and the other person didn’t make it. It can just be getting one DUI or anything related to drinking that you did that wasn’t the real you and you’ll realize something else was pulling your strings while you blacked the whole think out and you end up paying for something you don’t even have any memory of doing and it can be overwhelming and change you inside like being a shell of a person. Not everyone who gets sober ends up having a great life. That’s just a lie. It is more like you’re just trying to avoid ever getting in trouble again and so you have to shut yourself out from the world because you don’t want to be tempted and you don’t want give in and wind up back where you started or worse and so for me it left me with trauma and severe ptsd. Red and blue blinking lights absolutely scare the shit out of me. Set off panic attacks. Like my dogs light up toy ball. Looks like police lights going off and I have a physical response I cannot control which it means of triggering this fear inside and impending doom feeling. Jail is worse than a mental ward. Or maybe not. They’re more like one and the same. And when you’re sober surrounded by crazy people who are violent and intimidating it is a nightmare you cannot wake up from and every minute feels like an eternity. Don’t ever do drugs or drink and you will never end up ever experiencing real jail, not the fake stuff in movies. Not every jail is the same, of course, but if you get a bad one holy crap you’ll wonder how the hell any of it is legal to let the shit happen in the there the way it does. It like being flung into the Gladiators and you’re trapped and you want to dial 911 and have the police come rescue you but the plot twist is you’re surrounded by police and they won’t even look at you and if they do it is like you’re not human anymore. They don’t care if you’re genuinely scared. The sick part is they want you to be so you won’t come back. I get it. But it can be scarr you in ways that you never thought was possible. It has been 8yrs and I’m still not over the traumatic experience. You don’t want to be caged. Stay away from alcohol at all costs.

    • @Annie497
      @Annie497 6 месяцев назад +1

I don't know anyone who glorifies either one. Smoking is a whole other topic. It is strongly linked to heart and lung cancers and diseases, and no one should be forced to inhale the toxins cigarettes contain. That is why it is banned in most places. If it harmed no one else, I don't think anyone would care. Alcohol only becomes a problem when the person who is drinking has no self-control. Intoxication is not fun for the drinker, and certainly is no fun for anyone around them. When they get behind the wheel, that is when they endanger others around them. Two different types of addictions with varying consequences.

My mom was a reason I never started drinking after she passed. I saw how much it affected her and my family growing up. I was only in highschool when it really started becoming an issue. I'd walk in on her passed out in her bed and the whole room smelled awful bc of how much she drank. Almost every morning when I'd get ready for school I'd hear her puke in the bathroom because of how much she used to drink. At times she'd get really sick and be in bed because she tried to quit cold turkey. I'd come home from school to see her sitting in her car drinking big cans of beer and sometimes she'd even be passed out. I remember having to help carry her inside and put her to bed because she was so wasted. She was angry and belligerent when she'd drink. I remember all the nasty things she used to tell me but I knew she didn't really mean it. She rarely hit me when she was drunk but it was more verbal than physical. I still remember her rushing into my room screaming at me over something I did in school. I skipped classes because of what I was dealing with at home. I was not in the right state of mind every morning before school. All I did was worry about her. All I did was think about her. She used to go off in the middle of the night drunk and I would stay up hoping she'd come home safe. I cried when I heard sirens passing by because I used to worry she got into a wreck or got pulled over and taken to jail. This wasn't how I wanted her to die. I was only a kid and I still needed her in my life. Eventually, she did get help for her alcohol dependency. She was doing so well and she even got her own place to live. She wanted to go back to school and get a realtor license. She was going to get remarried and I was going to have an amazing stepdad. He loved both of us very much. Until I got the call in December of 2019. My brother told us she was in the ICU for a suicide attempt. I didn't want to believe what I heard. I didn't want to believe my own mom could've done something like this. She struggled with mental illness most of her life but I didn't think she'd go this far. When my brother found her, she had relapsed into alcohol again and that's what fueled her to do what she did. I'll never forget seeing her laid up on the hospital bed with all these tubes and wires on her. I'll never forget the last time I held her hand. I'll never forget her smile and her laugh. She finally passed away a few days later and it was one of the hardest days of my life. I'll never drink because of what it did to my mom. And I made a promise to keep living my life even if it hurts. Because I want to do better. I want to be better than my mental illness diagnosis. I had every intention of taking my life after she passed. I counted the days and wanted to go out on Christmas. But I never did. I kept fighting. Alcohol ruined my family. And I don't want it to ruin me.

Really heartbreaking to find out that he took his life shortly after this incident. He obviously had problems and you could tell he felt defeated and over it. Regardless of all of the chaos he caused in his own life, he was a father with three children - this will have a lifelong effect on them, no doubt. My father was an alcoholic and even at 40, I think about him and his struggles very often, it breaks my heart and it also pisses me off. He was found in his driveway dead when I was 20. He had a high level of alcohol in his system per usual, so they were unable to determine whether it was alcohol poisoning or the injury he sustained to his head that killed him. He was a very hurt man for many reasons and even though it had a massive negative effect on my life, I still feel terribly for the pain that he experienced before and after his alcoholism. Similarly, with this guy, it’s just hard for me to see someone hurting and so far gone that they just completely give up, taking others down with them. RIP, Josh.

Hearing at the end of the video that this guy died made me think of all of the friends and acquaintances I’ve known over the years who have had their lives also cut short by our disease. It’s such a damn shame. I don’t feel sorry for him in many ways, because of how he treated his wife, but I didn’t want to hear that he died. I don’t wish that fate for anybody. 😔

I'm shocked at how many widowed families are the result of those drinking and drugging behind the wheel (not the cause of my husband's death). It destroys families forever.
