I love that you guys love Amy. She literally saved my life after my wife passed away two years ago. There is for me empathy in her voice that is healing. Her voice is transcends life and death like love. She's the best.
This is my favourite of all her songs. The backing is sampled from Ain’t no mountain high enough (Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrill). So beautiful and tragic, she always has me in tears.
Amy was known for her deep, expressive contralto vocals and her eclectic mix of musical genres, including soul, rhythm and blues and jazz. Many of Winehouse's maternal uncles were professional jazz musicians. Amy's paternal grandmother, Cynthia, had been a singer and had dated the English jazz saxophonist Ronnie Scott. She was heavily influenced by jazz singers Sarah Vaughan and Dinah Washington, and her father Mitch used to sing Frank Sinatra songs to her growing up.
I’m not exactly sure why, but this is my favorite song of hers. FYI, she was George Michael’s all time favorite female singer. He really wanted to do a duet with her, but that obviously never happened.
He did a great cover of Love Is A Losing Game at a concert just after she died. I know there`s no performance video of it but I think he`d really enjoy Like Smoke from Lioness as it`s a duet with Nas who is one of his heroes.
My favourite too. Bought the album when it came out and this one just grabbed me. I'd like to think that she's up there jamming with Donna Summer, Teena Marie, George Michael, George Harrison, John Lennon, and maybe even Bowie too. Xx
I just have to comment on Amy Winehouse! So I never even listened to her music until I heard Back to Black, and I immediately loved her in every way! Who knew at 64, I would find yet another amazing singer-songwriter?? I love this song, but I love all her songs! Also have to say her band, and backup singers & dancers are so absolutely great too!! I just love her lyrics & the uniqueness of her old soul voice, and her delivery, even her so sad story made her so great! If only someone loved her enough to keep her safe & sound! 😢
This was from Amy's 2nd and final album, "Back to Black", 2006. This Motown influenced song demonstrates Amy's hauntingly beautiful vocals backed by parts of " Ain't No Mountain High Enough" by Tammy Terrault and Marvin Gaye. The video was shot in Los Angeles. The band providing a great beat to capture Amy's voice. Fabulous. Great reaction. Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️❤️ 🇨🇦 🇨🇦
Amy was one of those rare talents that we will never have again. She was beyond phenomenal and her voice unmeasured. Gone wayyyyyy to soon but her music and memory will live on forever. Thank you Amy for blessing all of us with you're beauty and incredible voice. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ You are deeply missed by so many fans. ❤ You guys are such a blessing and you bring so much love joy happiness and laughter to those of us who follow you. Thank you for being such beautiful people. 😊❤
When she's walking down the street with the dress loose and slipping off the shoulder it reminds me of an old Italian black and white movie with a lady just like that. Same atmosphere. Amy's songs are real. She wasn't afraid of singing about the darker parts of life. And nobody phrases the way she does. There's a power she lets loose. ❤️
Amy grew up listening to the sounds of The 60s, Soul & Motown, Reggae & Ska. Those were her biggest influences. RIP Amy. You will never be forgotten. ❤🎼
Amy performed often live on a legendary UK music program: Later…with Jools Holland. Pick a song from there and just melt watching her. She’s so missed.
This is one of my favorite songs of hers-- I love the contrast between the nostalgic romance of the backing track and the brokenhearted vocals. The combination feels like a loving elegy.
I'm with you, Jay. This old man just recently discovered her music and I don't think there is a more troubling early death of an artist than Amy. Remarkably talented, unique melodies and arrangements and, of course, that amazing voice.
I was at least 45, yeah. And ignored her for so long because she was a tabloid pop star and I usually find that just useless for music. How so so so so wrong I was. An all timer. Literally in the mix with Ella, Billie and Sarah, tho no on touches Aretha for me.
Next time you both decide to react to Amy Winehouse give a reaction to her songs Love Is A Losing Game or Wake Up Alone. Her voice in both songs is hauntingly beautiful and you can hear/feel her vulnerability in these songs. Two of her best in my opinion. She was inspired by the likes of Frank Sinatra, The Ronettes, Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, Ray Charles, Tony Bennett and Louis Armstrong to name a few she loved her jazz and soul music
It just hit me while watching this. Amy is a younger generations Janis Joplin! So talented, a sound unlike what others were doing... and due to addiction, gone far too soon!
The music at the beginning is a sample from Marvin Gaye and Tammy Terrell’s song Ain’t No Mountain High Enough. Hopefully you’ll listen to that song also.
Awesome reaction once again guys! You know I was noticing that you guys have never reacted to Dan Fogelberg 😮 and I know you both love storytellers and he’s another great one. With songs like leader of the band, Longer, Rhythm of the Rain or Hard to say you can’t go wrong. But with this Holiday season coming up I really think you guys should take a listen to Same old Lang Syne. Perfect song to listen to with Christmas and the New Year coming up!
I second that request. My favorites are lesser known: Souvenirs or Dancing Shoes are beautiful options but he doesn’t have any bad ones! Good time of year to do Same Old Lang Syne
I love this song! This is Mark Ronson's take on the song. He got her, understood what she wanted to do. Her influences are the jazz greats like Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald. Find the songs she did on the show Later with Jools Holland. She does some jazz classics as well as her own songs. Her version of Teach Me Tonight is classic. And maybe Anita O'Day's set from the movie Jazz On A Summer's Day. Big influence on her.
I saw her live twice. First time in 2007 as a support act to The Arctic Monkeys at Old Trafford. She was AMAZING! Sadly second time was a few years later at V Festival North when she was slurring, forgetting her lyrics etc and was booed by the crowd. It was so sad to see the slide and overall, her whole story is just so tragic. She had such natural talent and who knows the songs she may have gone on to give the world if she hadn’t have died so young. At least she left us with her Back to Black album, which remains one of my favourite albums and showcases her stunning voice. RIP Amy x
It’s about time Jordan!! Love this song. Just saw Dear Amy (an Amy Winehouse tribute band, the singer was pretty good) which is not the same, but the closest I’ll ever get. Check out “Love is a losing game” and “Me and Mr Jones” next. Amy really liked the Motown girl groups, that’s what you hear in her music (along with her jazz and soul influences).
Billie Holiday was the first jazz singer to re-define the genre by bringing in 'breathy', 'whisper' like responses that no one in this genre had ever done before. Then Amy comes along and re-defines the genre once again by a unique style of 'slurring' words and radically injecting, mid- sentence 'key' changes. Her writing was impeccable as well. Today, there is a young jazz singer who incorporates what Billie and Amy were known for whenever she sings a heartfelt ballad and that is Angelina Jordan, the reigning 'Queen Of Jazz'. George Michael believed the best written song he ever heard was Amy's 'Love Is A Losing Game'. When Amy was presented with her Grammy for her 'Back To Black' album, which contained the two songs I mentioned, Adele could be seen in the audience acting like an out of control school girl. Angelina Jordan actually visited the London home of Amy and was photographed hugging the life like statue of Amy in front of the house. Like Adele and Angelina were to Amy, Billie Holiday was 'definitely' the jazz singer Amy looked up to. To hear elements of all their voices in Angelina's covers of Adele's 'All I Ask' and 'Easy On Me' are truly two songs you should listen to, for I've never heard an individual singer bring forth the intricate, complexity of what sounds like 4 superstar singers in an individual song except Angelina.
I love Marvin and Tammi and would never consider a cover of Aint No Mountain High Enough worthy, but I absoluetly love this version, she changes it and makes it her own.
You two should watch the documentary "Amy" it's both wonderful, and heartbreaking in equal measure. She needed help, but got the opposite. I'd love to watch you react to it.
Amy said that she grew up listening to Jazz and she loves Frank Sinatra. She even named her first album Frank. So I believe her influences were 60s Jazz and Motown sounds
FINALLY!!! Back to some Amy!!! Now that's what I've been waiting for!!!! 🤩😍🥰 BTW guys... she actually started out in music being a jazz singer.. and she did say Jazz, 60s and crooner were her main influences that helped her develop her own sound. Man alive I miss her soooo much and it makes me so sad that she didn't get to bless us with a lifetime more of her gorgeous vocals and music!!!!!!
I was at a festival years ago & me & my then girlfriend both agreed we had to see Amy perform live on stage before she died & im so glad I did. What's so, so, so tragic is that in Britain we knew she was so close to self destruction that could result in her death. When she died it felt such a blow, she had such talent & ability but that album will live on forever. She really could have changed the musical world 🌎 but her impact will live on
The Great Tony Bennett, he's in his 90s now, but has Thrilled every Artists....He does a duet with Amy Winehouse....Also many other artists...Lady Gaga Probably Tony's most recognizable song Left my Heart in San Francisco
This young woman was far beyond her years. She’s Etta James but better. What a turbulent life she had. Surrounded by vultures that exploited her. One being her Dad. Sadly, she succumbed to her alcohol addiction and died. Drank herself to death. Oh, and she’d suffered from bulimia most of her life. What an amazing talent Amy was. WATCH “In Her Bed” and/or “F’ Me Up Pumps”. Both guaranteed you will like.
She was authentic. Hiding vulnerability powerfully in plain sight. Her live perfomances outstrip any recording by miles. The fact she lost the ability to communicate with a live audience towards the end was the breaking point for her.
Love is a losing Game is simply one of the best songs ever written. You have to react to that one. Could well be the most beautifully depressing song of all time.
You know, I was watching other reactions and music on RUclips and I suddenly said to myself - “IT’S FEMALE FRIDAY!” Even though I’m subscribed I don’t always get the notifications. Amy is easily in my top 5 favorite artists and I’m so thrilled when you guys react to her!
Back to Black album had the 60s throwback vibe. Her album frank was great at showcasing all the different styles of music she could sing. You guys will have to check out something from her first album.
So I went back to see your first reaction & I got chills up & down my arms, hearing her sing Valerie, and seeing your reactions. Yes, Jay, you are right!! She is your Janis Joplin, who I’ve listened to since I was 15, and absolutely loved her too! ❤
Maybe y'all should do more of her live performances. Probably why you like Valerie so much. Some people she was influenced by is Erykah Badu and Donny Hathaway. I love her cover of Donny Hathaway-" I love you more than you'll ever know". It's live and she sounds great. Y'all should check it out even if you don't react to it
Some of my favorite songs of hers are gems that never got super popular - You Sent Me Flying and Someone to Watch Over Me are two I always return to. The fact she mostly wrote her own lyrics based on her poetry is one part of what makes her such a distinctive genius, in addition of course to her unparalleled voice.
Love !!!!!! LOVE!!!!! LOVE ME SOME AMY WINEHOUSE!!!!! Amy loved music from the 60's and she brought that style of the 60's to the 21st Century....and her influences were women singer of the 60's.......Lulu and Dusty Springfield and Shirley Bassey.
I think Amy's biggest influence was Ronnie Spector from The Ronettes. They knew each other and Ronnie stayed in touch with Amy's mum right up until she died in January. Apparently she would meet up with her whenever she was in London. I love 'Be My Baby'. Such an awesome tune, and Ronnie's life was such a journey too.
I think you can sing “Ain’t no Mountain High Enough” simultaneously with this and it will fit! It even has the bells and the clicks like that song. It’s like a borrowed structure with a new tune.
Y'all gotta start checking out some of the music from her debut album. Please react to Amy Winehouse - "Stronger Than Me," "In My Bed," and "Just Friends."
Her parents, more specifically her dad was a music lover and introduced her to all the greats in jazz and also all the crooners and soul singers. Her look was inspired by Ronnie Spector and The Ronnettes and even her song Back to Black is derivitive of Phil Spector's Wall of Sound which was The Ronnette's singnature sound.
Her influences were the girl Bands of the 60’s like the Shangrila’s and the ronettes but also super jazz heavy like Tony Bennett and dinah Washington- She was a master at improvised singing as well. Truly missed. Rip
Amy told Tony Bennett during their duet recording session that Dinah Washington was her god. BTW...Tony says she's a legit jazz singer. Most pop artists don't get that compliment!!!
I love this song. You can really hear the musical influences she had in this one. I think her look was based on looks of the same era. I see Amy in the girl group The Shirelles, "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" (1961). It is a song written by Carole King and partner Gerry Goffin. If you want to see Amy fangirling, check out the duet by Tony Bennett and her "Body and Soul".
"LOVE IS A LOSING GAME" IS ONE OF THE MOST ASTONISHING MODERN SONGS!!! AND AMY'S BEST BY FAR!!! valerie studio version is an amazing listen if you have not heard it too. ; )
I really think Jay would love to see the live concert because it's a whole scene. backup singers and other musicians are amazing to watch. Live in londan 2007 was an emotional concert right after she got married.
I would say a big influence was definetly Ronnie Spector, lead singer of the Ronettes and such, She did a tribute to Amy Winehouee actually like 10 years ago aswell!
Yes she was down to her makeup, beehive and her vibe . Ronnie brought out the true Amy and blessed us with both of them. Her other influences were also other blues artists like Etta James.
Many of Winehouse's maternal uncles were professional jazz musicians. Amy's paternal grandmother, Cynthia, had been a singer and had dated the English jazz saxophonist Ronnie Scott. She and Amy's parents influenced Amy's interest in jazz
My favorite song of hers, her tone and phrasing -chills up my spine. So cool. Have to think growing up in UK Dusty Springfield had to be a big influence (her early stuff is traditional R&B/Jazz) plus the panda makeup and beehive look. Both are national treasures and both taken way too soon.
Would be great if you guys reacted to Wake Up Alone. Amy's vocals on that one are sick! Or better yet, you should react to her cover of I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know. That's a live version and to say she knocks it out of park is an understatement.
Just a cool note of nobody mentioned. This song is an interpolation of “ain’t no mountain high enough” it’s so interesting to me considering this song is more of conceding your position in someone life and “ain’t no mountain high enough” is pledging commitment basically
Finally… some more Amy!! Great review. Amy is soo missed. Just imagine what she might have put out in the past decade had she lived. What a tragedy! Sing on Amy! ♥️ My fav sons are I aint no good…. And Me and Mr Jones! This song is incredible… glad you reviewed it!
I know Jay keeps on saying Valerie is his favorite song but you need to watch Valerie acoustic she's just sitting in a chair belting it out and it's the pinnacle version of this 🎵 song
I'd love to see and hear you two react to "Love Is a Losing Game." I was gonna try to fool an oldies fan I used to work with, and tell her that it was an old lost Etta James song from the 60s but she would have seen right through that. It sounds like 1960s Etta for sure.
Amy Winehouse is a more sophisticated, soulful, metaphorical version of early 60s Motown. There is a pain to her lyrics even though her singing is upbeat, and it provides a nice contrast. She is missed.
From Amy's Wikipedia page, "Many of Winehouse's maternal uncles were professional jazz musicians.[13] Amy's paternal grandmother, Cynthia, had been a singer and had dated the English jazz saxophonist Ronnie Scott.[14] She and Amy's parents influenced Amy's interest in jazz.[14] Her father, Mitch, often sang Frank Sinatra songs to her, and whenever she was chastised at school, she would sing "Fly Me to the Moon" before going up to the headmistress to be told of." "She was influenced by Sarah Vaughan and Dinah Washington..." Now that you have seen Amy, check out Angelina Jordan at age 8 and again this year. She will blow your mind! Also check out Postmodern Jukebox with their different takes on well known songs.
Fun Fact: This instrumentation for the song was the "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" song by Marvin Gaye. It talks about her feelings for Blake after he broke up with her and went back to his ex girlfriend. She's a really great storyteller and it's such a shame she passed away at 27 because she had more stories to tell. RIP
I love that you guys love Amy. She literally saved my life after my wife passed away two years ago. There is for me empathy in her voice that is healing. Her voice is transcends life and death like love. She's the best.
Very sorry for your loss. ❤️❤️❤️

they should totally react to Dinah Washington love her
I’m not exactly sure why, but this is my favorite song of hers. FYI, she was George Michael’s all time favorite female singer. He really wanted to do a duet with her, but that obviously never happened.

For some reason this has always been one of my least favourites tracks by Amy. I don't know why, it just doesn't connect with me at all.
I saw Amy Winehouse live three times. Such a beautiful soul and so phenomenally talented.
She was so troubled but even more talented. Absolutely incredible

yassss!!!!!!! they have to do these 2 songs for sure. they both make me cry everytime

Wake Up Alone is her all time best studio recording. Especially if you want something soulful and deep.

If you ask me she got a healthy dose of some 1950s jazz. She sounds a lot like Dinah Washington to me.
She was very influenced by jazz. Amy's dad was a huge jazz fan and she grew up with it
She made us fall in love with her and then shattered our hearts when we lost her. Just a massive talent.

The fact she mostly wrote her own lyrics based on her poetry is one part of what makes her such a distinctive genius, in addition of course to her unparalleled voice.
Amy is the Billie Holiday of the 21st century
Love !!!!!!
Love her. The Back to black album is amazing!
You need to check out her duet with Tony Bennett
Her parents, more specifically her dad was a music lover and introduced her to all the greats in jazz and also all the crooners and soul singers. Her look was inspired by Ronnie Spector and The Ronnettes and even her song Back to Black is derivitive of Phil Spector's Wall of Sound which was The Ronnette's singnature sound.
So pleased you’re back to Amy! What a nice reaction to wake up to here in England ❤
Straight from the hart, a beautiful Amy song! 🎶🎶🎶❤️❤️
Valerie is one my favourite songs, so much talent this girl, sadly taken too soon.
Her influences were the girl
Bands of the 60’s like the Shangrila’s and the ronettes but also super jazz heavy like Tony Bennett and dinah Washington-
She was a master at improvised singing as well.
Amy winehouse live at Jools Holland. Don't go to strangers with Paul Weller. It's an absolute must must watch for Jay
Jazz was her primary music she grew up on. When she did Back to Black she had been into the 60s female artsiest like Shangrilas, etc.
Omg guys, I'm a bit behind but soooo happy to see you, and especially Jay, react to Amy 🙏😍 My fav song of hers! Yes to the soo missed goddess 💜
Thank you for this reaction. This song holds so many memories. Thank you again. X
You gotta do “Love Is A Losing Game”! The album version
@@ms.dirtybird7779 Oh right Etta too! Amy really gave both of them good recognition
This song samples the Motown classic Ain't No Mountain High Enough. It's used just perfectly here.
I Love Amy and miss her so much. Decades we will never get 💔🥺
My favorite Amy song!
My fav sons are I aint no good…. And Me and Mr Jones!
This song is incredible… glad you reviewed it!
Yes. Finally. My favourite Amy Winehouse track. Great reaction guys.
You have to checkt out Love is a losing Game... it's my favourite song by Amy & it is actually hard to pick one since all her songs are so great.
I know Jay keeps on saying Valerie is his favorite song but you need to watch Valerie acoustic she's just sitting in a chair belting it out and it's the pinnacle version of this 🎵 song
They reacted to that version
Why am I tearing up, I miss her ❤
Have you guys listened to “Rehab”? Strangely, that was my first exposure to her talent, a sad irony of life. Great talent, still missed.
I'd love to see and hear you two react to "Love Is a Losing Game." I was gonna try to fool an oldies fan I used to work with, and tell her that it was an old lost Etta James song from the 60s but she would have seen right through that. It sounds like 1960s Etta for sure.
"Me and Mr Jones" is my favorite song of hers. And I recently found it that the song was about NAS.
Amy Winehouse is a more sophisticated, soulful, metaphorical version of early 60s Motown. There is a pain to her lyrics even though her singing is upbeat, and it provides a nice contrast. She is missed.
A happy happenstance on this Sunday, October 27th, 2024, needed this, hadn't heard it before. Thanks, RSR, be well and happy. Enjoy!!
✌🏼😊🎶❤️🍁❤️✨️🕊
From Amy's Wikipedia page, "Many of Winehouse's maternal uncles were professional jazz musicians.[13] Amy's paternal grandmother, Cynthia, had been a singer and had dated the English jazz saxophonist Ronnie Scott.[14] She and Amy's parents influenced Amy's interest in jazz.[14] Her father, Mitch, often sang Frank Sinatra songs to her, and whenever she was chastised at school, she would sing "Fly Me to the Moon" before going up to the headmistress to be told of."
"She was influenced by Sarah Vaughan and Dinah Washington..."
Now that you have seen Amy, check out Angelina Jordan at age 8 and again this year.
RIP
Great comments with musical knowledge! Marvin , Tammi Amy magic with Tragedy
Note that the music is sampled from the 1968 Marvin Gaye/Tami Terrell hit "Ain't No Mountain High Enough."
This is my favourite Amy song
She was brought up on jazz, her father played it all the time.
