Not sure if you can help me but i have a 94 camaro that drives great but on the freeway with bumps it seems to want to jump in the back in the same direction. I thought maybe something in the wheel area or sway bar links had something wrong but everything looks good. It also makes a loud clunk sound only when i hammer the gas from a dead stop. Other than that it drives straight and no noise or pull to it. Any idea what could be wrong with it? The tires are wearing even and no shake or shimmy during normal driving. ps.. the tires alignment is straight too. If i put alot of weight in the back sometimes it makes clunks on bumps. Sounds almost like the rear end is going to fall off lol.
Hey Scotty! I have a Scion xD that runs well. I have someone telling me that I should trade it in because they don't make them anymore and parts will be hard to find. Is this true or should I not worry and keep it?
Always replace the fuel filter first, otherwise you can send the dirt downstream into the injector basket screen. Meaning the cleaner will clean the fuel filter.
I'm a believer in Gumout 510011 Multi-System Tune-Up, 16 fl. oz. My car was having issues just cranking up and not starting right away. After watching Scotty's video on it I thought I'd run a can of the stuff before I took it to a shop to see what the problem might be. After running a can of the stuff along with an Italian tune-up, she fires right up now every time quickly. Haven't had a problem with delayed starting since I used the stuff a few months ago. :-)
Good Lord, one time I mixed two together as I forgot about the first one I put in. It was Gumout and Prestone. I'm not sure what the hell catalyst took place, but the engine ran okay while pumping out huge clouds of white smoke. The smoke that settled in the garage rusted all the tools instantly. It was the most caustic thing I ever seen. Well, I had to flush the fuel system of course. The engine seemed okay, but the garage sure was not. I still would like to know what the fuel turned into? I also learned a lesson about mixing anything.
Here is a trick I learned from an old WWII Army motor pool mechanic. Another reason older cars burn oil is because the oil rings get plugged with carbon and the oil doesn't have anyplace to go when the oil ring scrapes the excess oil off the cylinder wall and the way to fix that or check to see if that is the problem is put about 4 ounces of Liquid Wrench in your oil and run it about 10 -20 miles then let it sit a few days. Before you start the engine check the oil to make sure it isn't thick as lard from carbon because this will completely clean the internals of your engine. As long as the oil has good viscosity start the car and drive it about 10 miles then check the oil again for viscosity and as long as it is ok continue to drive the car about another 100-500 miles and change the oil and filter then use 2 ounces of Liquid Wrench after about 200-1000 miles constantly checking the oil for contamination and viscosity issues change the oil after again. Your goal is to be able to go 200 miles with 2 ounces of Liquid Wrench in the oil without the oil turning black that is when you know the engine is clean. The reason you have to check the oil so much is once all the sluge and carbon buildup in your engine gets dissolved and gets mixed in with the oil it can be so thick it won't circulate properly and burn up bearings.
What if you put transmission fluid in your oil crank case? I hear that transmission fluid is a cleanser, so wouldn't that clean the inside of your engine?
@@stephenmaurer7008 Probably not, Liquid Wrench is a very mild formula, that being said there is always some engine somewhere with a seal made out of water soluble material or something very cheap. Older cars had seals that were far more susceptible to solvents than modern seals. The only other possible problem I can see is an engine so full of sludge it actually helps to seal the engine and cleaning it creates leaks but if that's the case that engine needs a rebuild anyway.
Love your videos Scotty. I watch them trying to bust you giving bad info. You pass every time. God bless you for helping people with honest information. There are so many crooks out there. It boils my blood every time a mechanic tries to screw someone. I am what I would call an advanced diyer/ semi pro mechanic. I hope I never bust you.
I do run a moisture removing additive through once a year through my car. I know this stuff works. I used it after running my gas low and I was sucking up the water in the tank that builds up from condensation. The car was running poorly until I got a fill up. After filling up the car ran fine. I decided to put in the water remover and then the car started running bad again. The water removing action had carried a lot of the rust sediment into the fuel filter. I replaced the fuel filter and it ran fine. I cut the filter open and it was red like a brick from the rust particles in the tank. Since then I will use it at least once during the year.
I've used Seafoam in cars before and in them I have seen differences. The most notable was my dad's '80s Mazda RX-7... you could use it to clean out the carbon build-up inside the rotary and it definitely breathed new life into it...
Techron is good to use in turbocharged cars. I have seen many turbocharged Volvos around 400-500k miles that use it and the combustion chambers are clean despite turbo blowby.
Most additives don't work or do much on modern cars (made in the last 10-15 years). The only time I would think that it MIGHT help is if your car is running poorly and the fuel injectors have never been cleaned, a bottole or two of STP or some other cleaner might help a bit, but it's only a "temporary" fix IMO.
Scotty makes you Cry, Laugh and Learn and that is why he is the best. If we were neighbors I'd invite you a cold beer Scotty, just to have the chance to shake your hand.
I only use fuel injector cleaner maybe twice a year/every 6 months. I mentioned this in a previous video and you commented and said it was a good idea. The car is 20 years old.
Talking about that buick century shutting off, I had an 03 monte carlo that did that too. I had the cruise set at 70 and the car just shut off. The kicker was that it was still keeping me at 70 whether I was on flat ground or going up hills. But NOTHING else was on. No dash lights, no gauges were working, nothing. It already had 181k on it, with a slipping transmission(which the car shutting off made worse when it came time to get off at my exit and drive it home) and then the car shutting off....very rusty underneath, so I just sold it for parts. I paid $650 for it, drove it a year and got $300 for it. Hot my money's worth. But those situations can be the ignition switch, BCM(body control module) or other things. Those two I listed are usually the issue tho.
Best thing to do without testing at a lab is to look at the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). It usually shows a range of how much PEA the product contains.
Scotty, there are proven test results that fuel additives work. Some work very well. Seafoam, Marvel Mystery Oil, Amsoil Powerfoam, and Royal Purple Max work very well at removing carbon and cleaning your carburetor or fuel injectors. Some additives help you get your old small engines going. (ex. Old dirtbikes, snowmobiles, old 4-wheelers, weed whackers, chainsaws, lawn mowers, etc.) I’ve done several tests myself as well and I know that additives work. No, you don’t need to use additives all the time, but you’re eventually going to have to use one at some point in time.
A BMW parts guy told me that the BMW fuel system cleaner is basically an overdose of Techron, and it actually cleared up some injector problems on my motorcycle. Everything else I tried didn't seem to do anything, so I now shop for PEA. If I don't see it, I don't want to buy it. However, one exception to this was a small glass jar of something I had called Motor PURR or something like that. That cleared something with the injectors on a trip I was on. Glad I took it with.
Hey Scotty, first time car buyer here and I’ve decided on a 2001 Toyota 4Runner limited. My questions are first off is this a good idea ? What should I look for when inspecting one? What are you feelings on the vehicle?
My '96 Regal had a problem with the MAF sensor. Replaced it with one that was dead on arrival (never, ever buy Duralast). Replaced it again, and the car quit dying at highway speeds.
You kind of answered my question since the guy with a Toyota has the same issue. But I don't want to just keep adding oil and then fail emissions test here in California
I have 2 of the devices shown at 4:16. Called a scangauge 2. They are actually pretty nice. I have one in my 04 ram that was throwing check engine lights and one in my 03 monte carlo I had that was giving me issues. You can monitor about 20 different sensors with it and can display 4 of your choice at a time in real time. It also can track how much gas was when you filled up last, estimated 0-60 times, and also is a scan tool which can read and clear check engine lights and codes. I get an occasional misfire, and also the fuel pump code in my ram. Bought it with 104k miles(115k now) and the misfires started about 1k ago(probably needs plugs). The fuel pump code is not actually the pump but it also shows up when the gas gauge doesnt read correctly. I added some stuff to my gas for a few tanks and it dissolved whatever was keeping the floater in the tank from moving. Once I freed it up, and the gauge started working fine, the check engine light hasnt come on for the fuel pump code for about a year. It was popping up every 5-8 times I started the truck before. I recommend them for anyone. They plug into your OBD2 port and have long enough cables to run it wherever you want, plus 2 locations on the display to plug it in for more options for mounting it. I always just mount it on top of the steering column by the hazard light switch so it doesnt move when the steering wheel is turned. They can be used with multiple vehicles, you can buy another cord without the device for easy swapping. The ONLY 3 things that need to be noted are....1) the mpgs and fuel usage related readouts are not accurate until you correct it. Once corrected, it is within 2-3% of what you're actually getting. 2nd is related to the 1st. If you swap the device from vehicle to vehicle, the fuel related readouts need to be re-adjusted. To install in my 04 ram, I set it to a 4.7L engine so it has a very good idea of how much fuel is being used before fine tuning it after driving it a bit and then filling it up. Once you swap it, you have to change the engine size. So if I swapped to my 06 monte carlo, I have to change it to 3.9L. This pretty much cancels the calibration for the ram. So my suggestion is to buy multiple devices to prevent that issue. And the 3rd thing is if you have a vehicle with cylinder deactivation, such as GM's Displacement on denand(DOD) or FCA/Chrysler's Multi displacement system(MDS), the fuel related readouts will be wrong. They do not have any updated software to correct it. So if you have one of those vehicles, I suggest using another device. Examples of DOD are the 5.3L V8 impala and monte carlo, grand prix, some chevy and gmc trucks, etc, and for FCA(Fiat Chrysler) any of the V8s from the mid 2000s on up in almost all applications. The exception I believe are the supercharged 6.2L V8 like in the hellcat, demon, trailhawk, etc.
Look for the MSDS sheets for products claiming containing PEA. the percentage of PEA will be listed on the sheet if it's a main ingredient. If it's not listed as a percentage in the main ingredients there's not going to be much PEA in it. MSDS sheets must be available to the public per regulations. If you can't find these sheets on the manufacturers website then email them, they have to give you the MSDS on request.
Those old Isuzu Troopers and Rodeos, and the first generation Kia Sorentos bounce like crazy even with new shock absorbers. They handle like they use mashed potatoes for springs.
I use Chevron gas. Always have. Coincidentally I have never had a clogged fuel jet or ful injector. Never. I was always sortof hoping it was due to the fact that I use good gas and replace my fuel filter periodically. Even though I have never had one clog. Am I just lucky? Or should I pull my fuel filters and clean them from time to time? Thank you Scotty! Hey Scotty regarding your recent video about your financial managing style. I am happy you planned for your retirement age and had the good sense to learn how to manage money at a young age. I did not. So now I am scrambling to buy a house at 63 years old.
1:35 WYNN'S ENGINE TUNE-UP desludge can clean the rubber seals and the rings if your lucky. I have fixed a lot of engines with this stuff. As the oil pump pumps oil through the lubrication system.
My Honda Civic 1.4 i 90 hp from 1997 sometimes doesn't start. The Battery is new. Most of the time it starts right away. but sometimes the starter doesn't turn the motor. I noticed that it mostly has this problem when the heater ventilation is on. It starts better when it is turned of. It eventually starts after the second or third trial.
Injectors get dirty because of the garbage gas , injector cleaner cleans the garbage off the injectors , techron works and my mileage proves you wrong !
Hey Scotty, Do you think that full size pickups will ever be made factory right hand drive for rhd markets? In Australia where I'm from we only have the small pickups like the Hilux, ranger, amarok and the Silverado, Ram, F150, Tundra, Titan are all converted locally and cost ridiculously north of $100k. I don't understand why the companies don't want to make them because there are big markets for it like Aus, UK, NZ, Sth Africa etc. Thanks.
Yeah that doesn't make sense. I wonder if it's because of some government regulations or tariffs. Maybe your government is putting exorbitant tariffs on bigger trucks for environmental reasons
I always use seafoam. I have never had a problem with it and the foam seems to clean the engine good from build up. If you need a car scanned i would take it to autozone they will scan it for free compared to going to a mechanic that would probably charge you for it and try to sell you on some repair.
Hey Scotty, I have 2014 BMW X5 35i, with about 35,000 miles on it. The car runs great most of the time, but on very cold winter days, the car runs rough at start up. The engine will misfire and even stall. Then after it runs for 30 seconds, it’s totally fine. The dealership replaced the injectors, and spark plugs, but it still does this. Could this be a faulty high pressure fuel pump? Or posssibly carbon build up on the intake valves. Thanks for all the great videos.
I had a Golf 6 1.6TDI with 200.000km, it had unstable revs, sounded quite rough sometimes. Bought a STP - Complete Diesel cleaner. It actually worked, the car performed better, lower fuel consumption & sounded better👍🏼 And after 12.000km took a full service, did get 2x better after that😊😊
I've thankfully only seen this once, but driving on the Interstate here in Kansas City I saw a car with a rear driver-side tire bouncing up and down while the car was driving, like a basketball player dribbling down the court.
Hi Scotty, I know you get alot of scanners to test but could you tell us in your opinion what is the best under $150 one that can help to diagnose issues like random misfires, studder/hesitation when reving when warmed up but not when engine cold, thanks
They have these interfaces that you plug into the OBDII port and they let you connect the engine computer to your laptop or cell phone. With the right software or app your device can act like a scanner. The interfaces go for around $10 and the software is around $50. I got mine from a company called AutoDoctor and its pretty functional.
The Buick shutting off could be too many keys on the key, ring hit a bump and the key turns off, happened to me all the time on my 2002 Malibu and that car wasn't even on the ignition recall, thankfully key hole was in dash, and steering didnt lock up
Can you do an in-depth video on luxury Japanese cars, in detail from 2004-2019 and compare them to domestic luxury vehicles and European luxury cars. Some Japanese cars to consider is the Infiniti G35, G37, Ex35, Fx35 & 45, along with all Lexus vehicles and Acura vehicles?
I put sugar in my ex gf car gas tank because I wanted to let her know how sweet she was to me. I hope her car runs better and has a pleasant exhaust odor
Scotty, what are the top four newer automatic transmissions made and we know Toyota will be #1:). We are looking for a toad for an RV and I hear 4X4 Toyotas can’t be towed.
Hey Scotty, I live in a cold snowy place and I like to have AWD. I am looking at buying a 2014 or newer Lexus IS 250 or 350 with AWD. I love Toyotas, but I don't want to pay for the gas in an SUV or a truck. What do you think of the AWD in the Lexus cars. It is better than Subaru AWD systems?
Hey Scotty in your opinion what decade had the best all around vehicles? Simple to work on, low maintenance, and long term reliability? I know the simple first cars needed almost daily maintenance, and modern cars are super complex, so what was the happy median?
Don't know how much PEA is in an additive, but we just have to assume that there's "already enough additives in the gas you buy", so... How do we know this?
My 2001 Buick Le sabre did that where it would shut off it I didn't stay on the gas.. and I ended up having to clean the throttle body. It worked but still has emissions code
SCOTTTYYYYY, i have a 2006 honda civic, it was missing 0.5 gallon of coolant but i cant find any leaks and my engine isn't burning it, is it possible that a tiny fender bender over a year ago caused a slow leak? thanks love the vids
It’s possible. Rent a coolant leak tester from the parts store and pressurize the system I’m sure there’s a leak somewhere if you are 100% sure it’s not burning it.
I own two motor scooters a 50cc 2-stroke.. and a 125 four-stroke Yamaha... The Yamaha seems quite complex with emissions and everything 😲 I bought the 2004 Yamaha vino 125 off a customer of mine.. who no longer needed it... I believe the scooter sat for a while and it is CARBURETED! ABOUT 5 MONTHS AGO I HIT A BIG BUMP IN THE ROAD AND SUDDENLY THE ENGINE WOULD BOG DOWN PAST HALF THROTTLE! I put some STP fuel treatment/ cleaner in the problem seem to clear up... Approximately 3 weeks ago I hit another large bump in the road.. and the engine started to do the same thing and bogged down again anything past half throttle.. I put STP in but it did not help this time.. a friend of mine believes that there was crap in the bulb of the carburetor and when I hit the bump it got into the Jets and clogged one of the Jets... He told me take the fuel line off the carburetor spray some carburetor cleaner into the fuel line inlet then hit it with a compressor burst of air... I did just that in a whole bunch of crappy gas came out the overflow... It took a while to get gas flowing ..the scooter started but now it runs perfect❤️.. someone told me to put a slight amount of additives in the gas tank once in a while to counteract the ethanol in the carbureted scooter....
@@LS1007 It's to clean out the engine, not actually use it in regular engines as a fuel.. It does allow you to make alot more power though. Just use water to clean the engine.. Steam is good.
@@PurpleHeartVR It does make more power but your car will just burn it twice as fast and it's expensive. Just use Lucus fuel and engine cleaner. It's $12 and does that same thing and it helps with fuel economy 👍
Hey Scotty, my daughter was putting regular in her Mini Cooper, how would I know if this has caused damage, and can it be reversed with additives if there aren't any signs? Thanks in advance!!!!
Hey Scotty, I have a 2011 Honda Odyssey with 88,539 miles on it. It has the original struts upfront but they still work fine except the dust boot is ripped. Should I change them? Any suggestions would be appreciated thanks!
I want to get a new truck but I'm not sure what kind to get, a Chevy or GMC would be best. What's your opinion on a good chevy or gmc truck. I currently have a 95 gmc Sierra extended cab.

My '96 Regal had a problem with the MAF sensor. Replaced it with one that was dead on arrival (never, ever buy Duralast). Replaced it again, and the car quit dying at highway speeds.
This video deserves to be on the trending tab.
for the tune up in a can. look up the safety data sheets, however that only gives you (example) 5%-10%. so you get an idea.
I couldn’t disagree more. Marvel Mystery Oil, Chevron, Seafoam all work great for cleaning carbon
No they don't. Just run clean gas and change your oil. Even if they do remove carbon it is so tiny it wont change anything
bardo Perez that’s why you use it every fill up if possible you really can’t expect it to clean your carbon out in one use
@@johnnytsunami6185 using a can everytime you fill up? 😂😂 go ahead and go broke stupid
For an oil burner, switch to a HIGH MILEAGE engine oil, available in most brands) to minimize oil consumption!
Had same problem with vehicle shutting off randomly . It was the ignition module. It was 93 chevy.
First time I've seen a Scotty video with no views. Wild.
Lawman212 ha I’m laughing 😂
love your videos helpful for saving money an keeping maintenance on cars
On the '97.5 to '04 Regals, turning on the left turn signal with a worn out switch will kill the car's engine as well.
Good video with excellent knowledge share,Thank You, Scotty!
Hey Scotty,
I was just wondering, if you still run a shop, where is it located? Just for future reference, might come by sometime
Scotty ROCKS!!!
I know this video was just uploaded but Mr. Kilmer please do a video about a legally imported right hand drive 1989-1994 Nissan Skyline GTR R32.
R33’s look better imo
Hey Scotty,
Do you think that full size pickups will ever be made factory right hand drive for rhd markets?
In Australia where I'm from we only have the small pickups like the Hilux, ranger, amarok and the Silverado, Ram, F150, Tundra, Titan are all converted locally and cost ridiculously north of $100k.
I don't understand why the companies don't want to make them because there are big markets for it like Aus, UK, NZ, Sth Africa etc.
Thanks.
Yeah that doesn't make sense. I wonder if it's because of some government regulations or tariffs. Maybe your government is putting exorbitant tariffs on bigger trucks for environmental reasons
Dingo ate my baby
Dan Hall Probably the same reason here in the USA, we can’t get small trucks that are diesel powered.
@@MisterTwister88 Colorado has a diesel and the ranger is also going to have a diesel available
@@thisismagacountry1318 lmao
It actually worked, the car performed better, lower fuel consumption & sounded better👍🏼
And after 12.000km took a full service, did get 2x better after that😊😊
I need to replace the shocks all the way around on my 2003 Camry. Plus the bushings.
Me too, 2007 GMC CANYON/SL/ 4 CYL:: what did you do??
From Fethi LakhdariGreat Job Scotty, Please keep them comming
Seafoam works the best, or a whole can of toluene mixed with xylene works.
Really did it take your idle and carbon smell away??
Scotty knows everything.
I've thankfully only seen this once, but driving on the Interstate here in Kansas City I saw a car with a rear driver-side tire bouncing up and down while the car was driving, like a basketball player dribbling down the court.
Replaced spark plugs. Car still has rough idle and will stutter sometimes when trying to accelerate. Check my coils also still having issues
Bg44 k excellent product for cleaning carbon deposits
Scotty the real plug
The Buick shutting off could be too many keys on the key, ring hit a bump and the key turns off, happened to me all the time on my 2002 Malibu and that car wasn't even on the ignition recall, thankfully key hole was in dash, and steering didnt lock up
Scotty and dr.phil are my mentors.
Awesome video scotty!
Good video Scotty. Those additives can fix stuck rings on ol bmws as well. Keep up the good work!
I don't know man. I just put some Marvel Mystery Oil in my tank last week ('93 GM 3800 engine)... It idles and runs WAY smoother.
How much did you put in the gas tank?
Techron seems to be the only thing that fixes sticky fuel sending units. Which seems to be an issue in many parts of Idaho, Arizona, and California.
I put sugar in my ex gf car gas tank because I wanted to let her know how sweet she was to me. I hope her car runs better and has a pleasant exhaust odor
U Should wear her spine as a necklace 2 show how much u appreciate her,
You're a tough guy.
That’s ok…one of her friends who works at MCDonalds blew his nose in your Big Mac.
Additives work for diesel fuel when it's extremely cold outside to prevent the fuel from gelling.
How about checking the battery terminal first ???
Scotty, what are the top four newer automatic transmissions made and we know Toyota will be #1:). We are looking for a toad for an RV and I hear 4X4 Toyotas can’t be towed.
Hey Scotty, I live in a cold snowy place and I like to have AWD. I am looking at buying a 2014 or newer Lexus IS 250 or 350 with AWD. I love Toyotas, but I don't want to pay for the gas in an SUV or a truck. What do you think of the AWD in the Lexus cars. It is better than Subaru AWD systems?
I have a 2010 is 250, it’s 93 only
Hey Scotty in your opinion what decade had the best all around vehicles? Simple to work on, low maintenance, and long term reliability? I know the simple first cars needed almost daily maintenance, and modern cars are super complex, so what was the happy median?
Don't know how much PEA is in an additive, but we just have to assume that there's "already enough additives in the gas you buy", so... How do we know this?
Talks about junker ... Shows merc . LOVE IT
Hey Scotty, great videos. Should I buy Salvage title car? I see great cars with salvage titles. Let’s us know. Thanks buddy.
Rent a coolant leak tester from the parts store and pressurize the system I’m sure there’s a leak somewhere if you are 100% sure it’s not burning it.
thanks i will! @@JD-ns9mr
Scotty, you have a video from 2014 of you using Gumout and then inspecting the cylinder with a borescope (before/after).
I own two motor scooters a 50cc 2-stroke.. and a 125 four-stroke Yamaha... The Yamaha seems quite complex with emissions and everything 😲
I bought the 2004 Yamaha vino 125 off a customer of mine.. who no longer needed it...
I am going to be using the Lucas fuel treatment with the ethanol remover
what do you think of the nissan 370z.?
nissan is offering killer deals on them cause they're old. they're very reliable if they're manual, reliable if auto, and OK if cvt
Just run 110 octane for maximum results hehe
Lol
Waste of money if your car doesn’t call for it.
@@LS1007 It's to clean out the engine, not actually use it in regular engines as a fuel.. It does allow you to make alot more power though.
Just use water to clean the engine.. Steam is good.
Purple Heart Yeah, fill your tank with water, that will clean your engine real good.🤪
@@PurpleHeartVR
It does make more power but your car will just burn it twice as fast and it's expensive. Just use Lucus fuel and engine cleaner. It's $12 and does that same thing and it helps with fuel economy 👍
Using it consistently makes a difference. But it really doesn’t if you use it a few times
Can you use fuel additive instead of buying premium?
Should you change the oil filter every 3 months on an old car, even if you are only putting maybe 200-300 miles a month on it?
Scotty for President
Good videos as always
Always watching scotty, he gives some good stories and advisess :)
Love this guy...Scotty..you should have your own TV show!
Hey Scotty, my daughter was putting regular in her Mini Cooper, how would I know if this has caused damage, and can it be reversed with additives if there aren't any signs? Thanks in advance!!!!
The old Techron bottles from 10-15 years ago was pretty good on my non-GDI engine. Now you can't buy the additive and I have a GDI engines 😥
What do you think of the Toyota Yaris with a manual transmission? If I bought one new would it hold up a long time?
Hi Scotty! Are Toyota’s that are made in America just as good as Toyota’s made in Japan?
Red Line SL-1 complete fuel system additive MSD sheet states 30% to 50% of the product contains PEA!
If Scotty lived to the 22nd Century, he'd be working on the Star Trek hyperdrive.
Beam Scotty Up!
But Scotty, you made a video on Gumout four years ago where you reccomend it over sea-foam products.
Thats gumout over sea foam but Royal purple over them out there just try them
True. And it was with multisystem cleaner gumout with PEA and a full tank of shell nitrogenated gas.
