    Saved this video, I have a 1997 C280 with 177,000 miles and have yet to have a head gasket code show up. Only things I was told to look for as it gets older are coil packs and head gasket.

      I think you have a different engine, yours must be a V-6. mine is L-6

    This is absolutely the best video in the history of online m104 videos pertaining to this topic. Hands down. Minimum edit, not only did you show your mistakes but you also showed how to correct them. Much respect to you, a keep it real Mechanic. Every other video uses engine lifts and all types of special tools that cost more money... the point is to save money. This video shows more than how to change the head gasket. There's a host full more of parts you can learn to change. I will be subscribing to your channel.

    Thanks for the upload. A lot better than Mercedessource that want's to charge $13 to watch his videos. I guess he wants us to watch 3 hours of cleaning parts and not getting right to the job at hand.

    Excellent video....I have the M104 AMG 3.6 lump.....the head gasket went at around 120000, so I had it replaced by a Mercedes specialist...the car is now on 236000 so if she was to let go again then your video has been a great aid to help me possibly tackle this job myself...
    You have my admiration, Thankyou...

    Great Video . Your video is the best on uTube , concerning the M104 head gasket repair. I am impressed with your video.
    I own a 1995 SL320 and a 1996 SL320 and both cars have the same M104 engine. Out of curiosity, I asked around a couple shops where I live and they want about $2000 to change a head gasket on the M104. My car doesn't need any head gasket repair but I wanted to know the cost ,in case it was needed. I have changed head gaskets on my 1990
    Corvette ,without any issues . You and your video is a life saver . And knowing that if the problem ever arises , I can use your video as a reference and know that I won't have any issues . And knowing that if I paid someone and they didn't do the repair honestly and respectfully , that would be money wasted and the repair would have to be done a second time.

    I have rebuilded the 3.2 engine 2 times on my channel, last time I exploaded the block, Im running a turbo on it and close to 800hp

    Yeah, but I have a C230 and just dropped off my head earlier at the machine shop. So the problem is why do all the inline Mercedes leak in the same place? Not only was mine leaking oil, but the head bolt I took out from that same area was covered in coolant/oil sludge as well.

      I'm asking around because the W124 300ce 24v is in the body shop for painting but when I went to drop it off, it was rattling and smoking blue. I have to drive 2 miles to bring it back and I don't know if I can take the risk!

    Has anyone here ever heard of an M104's timing chain catastrophically breaking under normal use? I have never heard of such a thing until I had my head gasket done (after 120,000kms) and the first road trip following the engine's reassembly had the timing chain explode. I've owned a car with an M104 before with 300,000kms on it and never had a major repair required.

      I haven't. Not that i have a lot of exposure to such problems. Looking at M104 timing chain it looks very well designed....
      Unless you tempered with the chain tensioner and overtighened the chain. There's a procedure to reinstall chain tensioner after its been removed or if u pulled the pin holding LHS chain guide and installed it back without removing the tensioner.

I'm actually aware of the proper procedure for reinstalling the tensioner, and reached out in hopes you'd say exactly what you just did! I wasn't involved in putting the car back together and am currently gathering opinions to support my legal action against the shop I had do the work. You are correct about he chain's design. It was built to last the life of the car, unlike some of it's single width cousins.

      @@chosenideahandle Absolutely, there are so many W203 with M271 timing chain problems and it looks like it occurs around 120-130 k km, jugging by the number of craigslist ads. But it's not the case with M104 engine.
      I think the shop has screwed up, the chain tensioner "secret" is not an obvious one, you have to know this specific detail. My buddy almost killed a M111 engine doing a head gasket, lucky for him he didn't start the engine because he was concerned why the timing chain is so tight after chain tensioner installation.

    I saw on google people commenting if it would be possible to put the head of the pagani with the m120 engine in the m104 engine, is it possible to put the head of the 6.0 v12 or 7.3 v12? What parts of the Zonda m120 are possible to install?

    Hello Andy. Sir, soon within this year I will be in the market for W124 . I am stuck within the 4 cylinders or the 6. I need your advise regarding the engine size. I will be using it mainly as Daily driving for the city and 2 to 4 times for traveling in very long roads between countries. I tried yesterday 230e I liked a lot but still I don't want the engine to be stressed always. So advise me please what is the smartest choice. If I couldn't find a very good W124 I will move to W202. THANK you Andy.

      hi. I personally prefer w202 over the W124, I think it has more contemporary look, has a better looking interior and looks much better on the outside. Also if you get a W202 after 1996 it comes with OBD2 that makes diagnostics and repair a bit easier.
      If you are concerned about fuel consumption i'd look at 4 cylinder W202 1996-1999 it comes with a 5-speed automatic or if you have a choice mechanical gearbox, it's smaller and lighter then w124.
      My dad had a 1996 W202 C180, and of cause it's not a race car , but you can't feel the difference on the hiway.

    I understand this is the right way to do it but do you recommend any of the head gasket sealers out there ?
    I have 99 c230 that has a sign of coolant leak under the engine but no sign of coolant in the oil yet .

      I don't have any experience using "stop leak" addidtives or so-called sealers, so I can't comment if they work or not.

      No. It can stay. Unless u want to replace the ex. Manifold metal guskets that came with the head gasket kit

    I have an oil leak coming from the front corner of my head on a M104. Do you think it's a leak from the head gasket? Or could it be the front timing cover chest seal?

      If it's a front right corner, it's usually a timing chain cover gasket. Id replace this one first, it's not a big job. if that doesn't fix the oil leak, then it's a head gasket.

      @@AndyPMercedesBenzChannel Thanks, do you mean the right side if looking towards the front of the car, or if looking towards the rear, mine is right hand drive, and it is coming from the drivers side, same side as the exhaust is on?

      Sorry for too much questions...was the old gasket in bad condition when removed? was it really causing oil leak? my engine is leaking oil from same area and am confused whether it is a gasket issue or not.. My engine was made in 1995 ,the era when Mercedes built bad material head gaskets that deteriorate by time (bio material)

      There are 2 spots in the back of the engine where usually oil leaks are developed:
      1. Passenger side Valve cover gasket halfmoon insert
      2. Back of the headgasket, passenger side.
      You have to look close to find exactly where the oil is coming from
      In my case it was a very minor leak from the head gasket.
      I havwen't heard about bio-headgasket, I think you are confusong it with the wiring issue, where the biodegradable material was used to make wire insulation.

      AndyP Mercedes-Benz Channel yes.. you are right. . Am confusing with wiring loom. . But I read that MBs had two issues since came out of factory.. the wiring loom and the head gasket.
      The oil leak in my engine is very close to the timing tensioner,very close to u-shape seal you replaced earlier. Oil level in my car reaches minimum After 1200km from oil change!!!beside there is blue smoke out of the exhaust.

      You are right, the wiring loom and the old style head gasket are problems. And the oil leak you describe is in the exact location where most of the M104 engines get it. A had this oil leak on my S320 and it was bad.
      Blue smoke is the oil getting into the combastion chamber, need to replace valve stem seals.
      If you decide to replace the headgasket ( cause i think you should ) do the head at the same time. Take it to a rebuild shop at's not expensive, here in Canada I got quoted 200-250 CAD to rebuild and test the head.

    Heyo, Wondering if you may be able to help me. I have the same car; W202 C280 but it is a '95 model with no ASR/ESP and it is a 5 speed Manual. I notice that it smells very rich from start-up, all the time, so it is clearly over fuelling but I'm not sure exactly why? I spoke to my own mechanic and he says that it could be due to the fact that the viscous fan clutch is constantly engaged (I Just changed it 1000 miles ago?) and is not allowing the car to warm up to the correct temp (it will sit just above 80 degrees celsius and not move at all), so the ECU thinks the car is running cold and supplying extra fuel. I also notice a lack of power when it does hit just above 80 degrees.
    The loom has been rewired, Coil packs changed, new fuel filter and spark plugs when serviced, ECU rebuilt, Head Gasket was done a while ago etc
    Thoughts??? I would appreciate it

      Уважаемый Андрей здравствуйте. Хачу уточнить ещё одну маленькую но очень важную вещь при установке цепи на 104 маторы. На распредвале находитца две звёздочки. Один из них звезда августа. Скажите пожалуйста при выставления меток вы не поворачиваете звезду на ванусе до мёртвой точки? А потом лишь можно будет натягивать цепь на ванус? Не так ли это? Почему я ето спрашиваю ? Потамушто я не вижу в вашем видео чтобы вы упоминали об этом . Я думаю что это очень важно для тех кто хочет занятца етим делом. Пожалуйста продемонстрирует ето если можете или расскажите мне про етот нюанс для меня ето очень важно. Спасибо заранее извините что тревожу.

    I'm literally doing the same thing the only thing that's stopping me from getting the head off is the exhaust manifold!!! how did you get the exhaust off?

      1. disconnect 2 exhaust pipes from exhaust manifolds.
      2. remove air injection valve and tubes.
      3. disconnect EGR tube (this tube runs behind the block) from EGR valve. disconnect front tube from rear exhaust manifold and remove EGR valve.
      4. u can pull the head with exhaust manifold if u feel strong or u can remove them. remove all nuts holding exhaust manifolds. some of them will be accessable by a socket, for the 4 nuts at the bottom, 2 at each manifold u will have to use a closed wrench 🔧

      mate..you have to take altenator off ..this gives you room to use a 12 mill ring spanner from underneath

    Здравствуйте. Хотелось бы ещё разок поговорить о метках цепи. Меня интересует где конкретно должна стать метка нижнева шкифа. Почему я задаю етот вапрос ? Потамушто на шкифа два нуля. Где именно я должен выставить метку? между ними или на каком то из них? Спасибо за понимание и внимание.

      Здравствуйте. Уважаемый Андрей. Я нехачу снимать распредвалы. Хочу только галовку снять . Хочу поменять только прокладку между галовкой и блоком цилиндров. Потомушто прокладка сильно течёт. Точно также как у вас на видео где вы показывали, с заднева угла и переднего. Што вы скажите по етому поводу ,если я не буду трогать распредвалы, просто сниму голову целиком в комплекте? Спасибо большое.

      @@rafikmustafayev6005 снять распредвалы проблема небольшая там ничего специального Нет просто откручиваешь главное соблюдать порядок откручивания болтов чтобы не нагрузить распредвалы.
      Распредвалы придётся снимать всё равно потому что надо будет шлифовать головку и также проверять седла клапанов. Болты можно замерять обычной линейкой Ну а если есть штангенциркуль то ещё лучше

    И ещё один вопрос. Как можно узнать цепь растянута или нет на 104 матовое? Какие неготивные признаки при симптоме с растянутой цепью? У меня на машине 186 000 км. Как вы думаете с таким пробегом нужно менять цепь? Дилер Мерседес не рекомендует менять цепь с таким пробегом. Хотелось бы знать ваше мнение. Спасибо заранее.

      На 104 моторе стоит двухрядная цепь. Она в общем-то ходит долго При нормальной эксплуатации. К я бы не заморачивался с заменой цепью твой дилер прав.
      при растянутой цепи теряется мощность и может выскочить лампочка check engine. Tакже появится звук в переди мотора где цепь

      Я очень щепетильно отношусь к этим делам. Может для кавото ето незначительно но я харашо знаю сваю машину. Можно сказать ничего. Кагда останавливаю машину на светофоре дапустим я вижу стрелка тахометра плавает можно сказать что как бы вообще ничего. МАИ подозрения что будет быть тротал Бади. Поэтому хотелось бы узнать ваше мнение. Я зимой не ездию на этой машине. Только летом я выганяю её из гаража . Естественно я снимаю плюсавую клейму на всю зиму. И я вот думаю может нужно кампютер подключить и выставить абороты как бы заделать рессет. Хотелось бы узнать ваше мнение . спасибо за ваши ответы .

      AndyP Mercedes-Benz Channel пожалуйста если можете помочь помогите мне проблема заключается в том: авто w202 c280 1994 акпп года когда я завожу машину если рычаг акпп не перевести в положение N либо D поднимаются обороты до1300 примерно, и педаль газа на половину не работает, а если сразу поставить на N то обороты в норме педаль тоже реагирует нормально. Потом при переведении рычага в режим Р то та же ситуация начинается поднимаются обороты и педаль газа не реагирует на половину приходится выключить машину и заново завести. Не могу найти здесь мастера который понимает что делать. Судя по вашим видео вы понимаете в этом подскажите хотя бы примерно где копать.

      AndyP Mercedes-Benz Channel может ли быть виноват селектор акпп? Просто когда машина работает нормально а селектор находится в положении N если пошевелить рычаг акпп то обороты тоже начинают прыгать стрелка тахометра тоже то перестаёт работать то начинает. Спасибо🤝
