    This is absolutely the best video in the history of online m104 videos pertaining to this topic. Hands down. Minimum edit, not only did you show your mistakes but you also showed how to correct them. Much respect to you, a keep it real Mechanic. Every other video uses engine lifts and all types of special tools that cost more money... the point is to save money. This video shows more than how to change the head gasket. There's a host full more of parts you can learn to change. I will be subscribing to your channel.

    good evening Sir, I'm Nestor from Liberia, but lived in Germany I really appreciated your video it's helped me a lot because such Mark vehicles are the most difficult to Timing , I'm a Mechaniker too

    Great video, thanks. For basic timing, before installing the camshafts the crank should be set to 30 degrees BTDC. In this position the camshafts can be fitted and rotated without valves hitting the pistons. Once fitted and set, and the 4mm pins inserted, the crank is rotated to 0lT or 0l0 (TDC) and the chain is then fitted. It makes it easier.

    Amazing job..thumbs up.
    Now I believe no oil leaks at all.
    I need to do this to my engine head(the famous head gasket issue in all MB from 1993 till 1996 ),but am not so professional like you,oil leak is too much beside my engine head that I have to change oil every 2000 km or less :(
    Wish you all the best.

      So far so good. the leak on my engine wasn't too bad, but as i'd drive on hi speeds the oil would leak at the back of the engine onto the exhaust pipe and it would smell burned at the stop.

    I usually try not to let the chain drop, i use a piece of electrical wire to secure the chain.
    I dont think the chain will fall of the crankshaft sproket, i dropped it few times, but i would not recommend to do it on purpose, just to be safe.

    The WIS (Werkstatt Informations System) from Mercedes says for the cylinder head bolts:
    Length (when new): 160 mm
    Max. Length: 163,5 mm
    Fasten them in step one with 55Nm, step two turn another 90°, and in step three another 90° (cold engine!).

  • @philipcooper8297

    Every car manufacturer says you need to use new bolts when replaceing the head, because they strech as you torque them down.

    • @andrewp3089
      @andrewp3089 7 лет назад +4

      Yes, they do recommend to replace them. But in the MB work instructions they say to measure the length of the bolt and to replace them if they are over 163mm. I decided to reuse the bolts and on installation I didn't feel any difference from istalling the new ones, I'll see the results when I start the engine.

    Any disadvantage of just putting the cams on/head together before installing the head on the block?

    • @AndyPMercedesBenzChannel
      @AndyPMercedesBenzChannel  Год назад

      If you can handle the wight and place the head in the right position onto the dowel bushing, why not. You don't want to move the head around because dowel bushing might scratch the head surface

    When you take the timing chain off the cam sprockets do you let it just drop? Will it fall off the crank sprocket or is it captive? If it does drop off the crank won't it be really hard to set it back on that sprocket so that the marks you made on the cam sprockets are lined up again?

    I've got an issue with an oil leak on my 1995 c280 as well, I've attempted to stop the leak at the timing cover 3 times now, I got the gasket seated perfectly, gasket sealant in perfect amounts done even more diligently than you did in the video, yet I keep getting a seepage from the passenger corner 10-15 seconds after I start the car back up, same amount of oil each time, do you think its the head gasket leaking? any response would be greatly appreciated its my first car since 15, and I've had it for 5 years, had the transmission rebuild not even 500 miles ago, and this oil leak isn't letting me sleep at night...

    • @AndyPMercedesBenzChannel
      @AndyPMercedesBenzChannel  5 лет назад

      There aren't many choices, only 2 - head gasket and timing cover gasket.
      You can try and retorque headbolts first, if it will not work then head gasket.
      Apperently original gasket collapses in the front passanger side corner. New gasket has a metal insert.

      I will try your suggestion, the previous owner told me that the head gasket had been changed before and the head had been surfaced down a small amount, how ever I do not think the gasket is an updated one since it was so long ago. @@AndyPMercedesBenzChannel

      AndyP Mercedes-Benz Channel basically what I'm saying is I did everything you did for a head gasket change and once I put everything back together I cranked my car and once I cranked it it the engine ran for like 5 seconds then it stalled out (shut down) I was asking why is this?

    добрый день у меня броблема 104 двигатель 3.2 в 3 цилиндр попадает масла на поршень из за этого закладывает свечу и машина дымит . проверили голову на трешену клапана претер заменил масла съемные калпочки заменили кольца поставил все на места завел и все равно масло в 3 поршне ? что делать не знаю и еще заметил что давление в двигателе падает на холостых подскажите в чем проблема

    • @AndyPMercedesBenzChannel
      @AndyPMercedesBenzChannel  7 лет назад

      конечно так на расстоянии очень сложно сказать. Все что могу посоветовать
      - проверьте компрессию в цилиндрах, что бы убедиться что нет трещин в головке
      - я так думаю что поставили новую прокладку, когда делали головку
      - обязательно нужно проверять головку и блок цилиндров на плоскость, там допуски маленькие, может придется шлифовать
      - проверьте есть ли масло во впускном коллекторе, может масло идет через него

    • @007.5
      @007.5 7 лет назад

      AndyP Mercedes Channel здравствуйте я заметил что есть масло но не знаю как это называется может это и есть впускной коллектор оно одевается на головку блока и в нее входит рама с форсунками масло в канале именно в 3цилиндр как оно туда попадает?

    • @AndyPMercedesBenzChannel
      @AndyPMercedesBenzChannel  7 лет назад

      черный пластмассовый на стороне водителя? это впускной коллектор. карторные газы направляются обратно в камеры сгорания, надо смотреть все систему рециркуляции. я никогда глубоко с этим не разбирался , но похоже что забит EGR valve или PCV valve и гонит масло бо бпускной коллектор.
      Гдето читал кто-то даже установил маслоотделительнуй фильт на трубке рециркулации газов и сливает раз в месяц.

    • @AndyPMercedesBenzChannel
      @AndyPMercedesBenzChannel  7 лет назад

      смотри...там 2 вакуумные трубки (гдето около 10 мм диаметром) подходят снизу во впускной коллектор как раз около 3-4 цилиндров, мне кажется масло идет через эти трубки и 3 цилиндр всасывает, поэтому только 3 цилиндр и засирает
