I used to take my siblings and cousins trick or treating as I was the eldest. One year, a house we stopped at offered cider and donut holes as treats. The residents of the home were elderly and couldn't come to the door, but their aide answered and invited us in so the couple could see our costumes. I'm not sure how many visitors they had that night, but it was definitely worth seeing their faces light up at seeing all the "cute" costumes.
    Samhain Blessings and Happy Halloween!

About half the houses homemade treats and you're almost always asked in to show off your costume and have a chat. It took over an hour to do our very small neighborhood. 0h, anyone wondering what I mean by starter homes is 1 to 3 bedroom inexpensive homes built between the 40s and 50s. Most of them were a 1000 square feet or less. Unless someone had done and add-on.

At one house, he saw there was a party going on inside. He looked through all the lady's candy then proceeded to tell her that he didn't like any of her candy, so could he have a piece of pumpkin pie instead. My parents were the "It's the devil's birthday" kind of parents too.
I am of the opinion that whatever is in your heart about a holiday or tradition is what it is for you.
Halloween, to me, is when a bunch of little kids put on ADORABLE costumes and then go door to door, showing them off, and you give them candy. To other people, like they say in Mean Girls, it's a reason to dress like a sl*t and no other girls can say anything. To other people, maybe it's "the devil's birthday." I think it's all about WHAT IS IN YOUR OWN HEART and doesn't have anything to do with the symbolism.

My mom always made my costumes, and she was an excellent seamstress so that was my day to shine! My leopard costume was my favorite.
I started sewing at age 10, so by the time I was in my 30s with a toddler, I had some skills. When he was 2 1/2, I made him a tiny Las Vegas Elvis jumpsuit with lots of crystal bling bling and a cape lined in gold lame. I had let his blond curls grow out some, and used a temporary black dye that was non-toxic to transform his hair into the classic Elvis pompadour.
That costume was a hit, and I taught him to say, "Hello Baby!" instead of "trick or treat".
We got to this house where two elderly sisters lived, and one of them was an Elvis worshipper! The other sister opened the door and gasped, then shouted, "Emma! You're gonna want to see this one!" Emma screamed like a teenager seeing Elvis in person! She was almost crying, "It's ELVIS! OMG, it's baby Elvis!"
Fortunately, my son wasn't upset, but then he was used to loud screaming with our nutty family.
I wish I had bought a video camera back then. There are so many things I want to see again, but never will.

I’m Pagan and the veil between the living and the dead is thinnest tonight. Tricksters will use that to cross over into our realm. Traditionally turnips would have been carved to ward off unwanted visitors from the other side. You welcome your ancestors who may have crossed over to join you for a feast. if you had to go outside, you would make yourself look like a goblin or ghost to “trick” evil spirits into thinking you were one of them. That is a very general explanation. It isn’t a birthday for the devil as the devil is a fallen angel from the Christian faith and not a part of Pagan history.

It did however start a little tradition that we enjoy so much. A lady here has a really neat Halloween village made of little things she has collected over the years - like little haunted houses that light up, a spooky carousel, etc. She hides a small Fox figure in it every year (Fox is her last name) - since my daughter invited herself in that one year, she lets us come in every year now to try and find the fox. This village is well put together and it’s tricky to find! My dad took my daughter this year, since I’m sick, but he took her to go find the fox. The girl with diabetes is an example of the reason that the last year I gave out candy (moved to an apartment building the next summer) I had regular candy, nut free candy, and cans of diet Cola to give out. When kids came to the door I asked about dietary restrictions and gave out the appropriate treats. One parent thanked me for having nut free options for her kid. I just wanted every kid to enjoy their treats.

I was talking to another woman at church today about how I'm just sticking to what it says in the New Testament about Levitical food laws. I wanted to also share my story of dressing up for Halloween at work as an adult. lol I had started a job in late July of 2017 as a floater in housekeeping at a local retirement home (for rather wealthier elderly people). All I remember is that, those of us housekeepers/maintenance workers, working that day, were told we still had to wear our uniforms, but were encouraged to try to dress up/add to our ensemble, or even masks could have worked, in order to be festive for the elderly community there and for our department to participate along with the other departments at the facility. So, my first Halloween there, after only working a few months, I finally figured out a simple way I could participate, even though I'm not big on Halloween anyway. I made it fairly simple for myself, once I saw a tiny witch hat on a headband at the local .99 cent store (I miss those stores, they are not located where I've moved to) and then I added some green makeup (eye shadow was all I had) that was barely pigmented and slowly melted off my sweaty face, and some bright purple lip color. I got to work that morning and of course my participation delighted many of the residents, however I realized that I was the ONLY housekeeper who did anything, along with my supervisor & the head of department had dressed up. The head of the department was so disappointed that no one else even tried (I was also the youngest on staff, 29), he decided to tell my supervisor to reward me (in secret) by taking me out for lunch one day on the company's dime. I also decorated my cart that December in wrapping paper & a big bow (Christmas being a favorite, nostalgic holiday for me) in order to bring a smile to the residents and since it was the closest thing to a "cubicle" I had.

The adults are supposed to sooth the child and help them to regulate their emotions not get as worked up as the child. 🤦🏻‍♂️ And before anyone comes at me, I have raised four kids (two of each gender) and just took these types of photos with my new grandson. Thanks for this video Charlotte. I needed it today. My autistic son has spent five years and countless hours curating our Halloween display, and he decorates the entire outside of the house, as well as putting up a light display. We spent quite a lot of money this year choosing some new animatronics, started preparing the whole display back in September, and tonight we were really excited to be greeting the trick or treaters as we always do. Well, we were run off our feet, greeted over 60 groups of children and handed out so much candy and light up bracelets that I had to go out midway through the night to restock. By 9pm it had calmed down and we were inside , when my son heard a noise outside - he looked out to see a middle aged man vandalising our display. My son came and got me, but by the time I got outside, the man had gone. As mad as I am for him destroying two animatronics (one of which we bought only last month) and another smaller decoration, the worst thing for me was that he scared the crap out of my son, who already has anxiety issues. We had a large skeleton tiger that reacted to movement, and he literally stomped, kicked and tore it apart and dumped the pieces on our driveway, along with the other ruined decorations. I've been so angry and sad for the last few hours, but this has at least raised a smile, so thank you.

Our church always had an alternative party where the kids dressed up as Bible characters. Or we had a carnival. Nice but my kids still wanted to dress up and go out trick or treating.

Fellow Christian here and same! I wanna take any future kids out for trick or treating. Being deprived of costumes it’s no wonder I’m obsessed with cosplaying as an adult now! Lol (and ftr my parents are great).
I’m Reformed but I know some Baptists don’t do it either, and I think Charismatics avoid it too iirc.
But we usually had Harvest or Reformation parties which sometimes involved costumes and candy.

@@andreabradley5837 I’m not sure. Haha. It was a Calvary Chapel church. We didn’t dress up or do traditional Halloween things - but we had games and prizes that night to keep families occupied outside of the “Satanic activities”.

Yes Charlotte, for the first trick or treat experience it is very much a thing for little ones to walk straight in the house because as you said, in every other scenario that's what they know to do.....both my kids did or tried to anyway, my son was 3 and my daughter was 2, so very confusing for the little darlings, luckily people find it delightful and they figure it out pretty quick😂🎃🍬🍭

It’s been years since I’ve celebrated, we have 180 people in my town, so people leave for the city to do so. But trick or treat is very much help up to standard where I am from. So you do a trick or a joke for a treat. I’ve heard some amazing things and seen some awesome stuff. One kid was on his skateboard (maybe 13/14 years old) I told him I wanted a trick and he did a handstand backspring onto his skateboard and then did a few tricks of flipping it and making it walk etc. he got a whole handful of candy, lil stunner, and one little girl was so cute she tried doing a summersault and fell over getting dizzy. I think she was maybe 2. Dressed as a little bumblebee with a crown of flowers. I loved her!!!

Geeze. The first one could have been totally avoided if they used a pumpkin carving knife or a small serrated knife. Preferably the pumpkin one from one of those cheap kits. 😢

I knew immediately from seeing the picture that the pumpkin was waaaay too small for her.

Historical Fact: Jack-o-Lanterns were originally turnips. They are a lot harder to carve though.
Addition: Don't worry, there are plenty of us Charlotte. I'm not a fan of pumpkins either.
I remember growing up, I don't remember if it was a family member or a family friend, but they were/are allergic to pumpkin (I assume they still are). If they touched the "guts" they would break out in itchy hives and have a real tough time. I had to scoop out the "guts" of their pumpkins whenever we carved them and I just straight up hate that texture. Weirds me out.

    • @jacklow9611
      @jacklow9611 Год назад +1

That's why you need one made of stiff foam with a permanent electric light that can be used year after year. Not only is removing the "guts" a sometimes-gross process, but there is also the need to dispose of it later as it begins to decay and fall apart on the porch or front steps.

@@RedCanyonWolf Might not be an allergy. It could just be an extreme sensitivity to that. Or maybe it could be that you don't do it often enough and the feeling is just something you don't experience enough to get used to. There are gloves you can use, and washing your hands does help, or just rinsing them off occasionally.
