His personality takes over the room and audience. Hollywood missed out in not casting him for decades
@@JJJoeJoe True, but I also think he meant that do to the lack of opportunities for any actor of a diverse background as it’s no secret that there was a lot of discrimination going on in Hollywood back then and still is.
Facts, so happy he returned and may more others are on their ways
@@JJJoeJoe No, his point is that it wasn't until Crazy Rich Asians that a wider range of Asian role existed.
@@JJJoeJoe He also said he didnt have an agent for decades....so.....
I always fast forward interviews but not this one. He's just beaming with confidence and enthusiasm every second of it.
His voice is lowkey iconic.
Agreed!
I was really surprised to hear him! It’s a happy nostalgia!!!
Not even lowkey, highkey! I could listen to him speak for hours
😂🤣😂🤣
I have to agree,
all I kept hearing was
"Boobie-traps"!
Read my mind.
I went in to “Everything Everywhere All at Once” without any prior knowledge, and the entire first 20 minutes I was trying to place him, then it hit me. Not only that but he plays a range of characters with such kindness and care. He’s one of the hearts of the film.
I would argue based on the structure and theme he is the heart
Absolutely the heart of the film. Everyone brought such strong emotional performances but Waymond was the constant beacon of hope, joy, and love throughout the film.
Same - there were a couple phrases he would shout, something like "We've got to go now!" that I was like, is that Data? No...couldn't be...but it's totally sounds like him! I waited until the end of the movie to IMDB him and sure enough! He did such an amazing job and it's exciting to see him return so strongly.
@@StillOnTrack “we’ve got to be kind, especially when we don’t know what’s going on.”
It’s a line and a proverb all at once.
I also saw it cold!! And had the same experience re him. What an incredible film. Everyone goes to see The Batman (I fell asleep) and people should go see movies like this. And not just for the reasons Quan mentions.
the word “wholesome” was made just for this man. his energy is so contagious and lights up any room. you can tell he’s just a genuinely good human being
Dude really just looked at Crazy Rich Asians and said "I can do that" and then immediately went on to make Everything Everywhere All at Once and drop one of the best performances of the year.
Amen
I'm glad it happened!!
One thousand percent this.
he really gave it his all in this movie. He basically played 3 different characters at once.
He was spectacular
It’s so sad that he had to step away from being in front of the camera because of lack of opportunities. Took 20 years for American cinema to have more Asian representation and opportunities and even now he still expressed it’s still difficult. Kudos to Jimmy for having him on and promoting this awesome film!
As an asian myself, i am absolutely thrilled and happy for him.
@Ahhh Haaa Hollywood is dead. Asians can be represented better doing their own thing. We can’t crater to Hollywood, begging them to take us.
There’s a need for more representation in Hollywood period whether it’s Latinos, Africans, South and East Asian etc. there needs to be more of everything and more consistently.
Actually Jimmy doesn’t really care. He’s pretty insensitive and dismissive to Asian guests….but he has an audience and it was still a good opportunity Ke Huy Quan.
Even with Asian representation, you would either have to be Chinese, Japanese or Korean. There are no other Asians in Hollywood 🤷🏻♀️
Okay I'm tearing up over this interview. That was *so* moving. Glad things have changed enough for this talented actor to get right back into it. And kudos to Jimmy for letting him tell the story without interrupting. A rare thing these days.

I was on the verge of tears too. I love his story.. He needs to make a movie about his life!
Me too I got a little teary eyed towards the end of the interview.
Not only is Ke Huy Quan a humble and inspiring person, and a gifted actor, but every part he gets is in a movie that's absolutely classic. See Everything Everywhere All At Once! It genuinely lives up to its reviews and it's title! I saw it this past Sunday and I haven't been able to stop talking about it.
@@darrenkaminsky7618 just saw it tonight. It was honestly a life changing experience.
At 5:30 you can really tell how difficult it is for Ke to talk about his career about the time Goonies was over, because eventually the phone stops ringing. And in Ke's case, it was right as his career was taking off. You go from starring in two major blockbuster films, to nothing. And at 14, I can only imagine how defeating that must have felt. I love that he's been able to have a late career resurgence and I'm also hoping we get to see him in the new Indy film.
So happy for his return in middle age, and for the recent Jennaissance (Jennifer Coolidge)
So glad that he didn't gave up his career or descended into drugs or something. he just kept going with what he had and eventually landed back in one of the most outstanding movies of the decade! he's a legend.
@@Cangaca777 We have to thank his PARENTS for that, for staying grounded in his teenage years "post-Hollywood".
@@loveleeluv7 100% Agree
🙈 No more new Indy films, Blade Runner, or Star Wars. I'm too traumatized from the tepid and unnecessary Crystal Skulls and 2049, not to mention yawns and groans inducing Episodes 1,2,3,7,8,9.
How can you not root for a guy with such passion and gratefulness for what he has? I wish him the best of luck in his return to show business. I believe he came back just at the right time, because there are more opportunities than before for Asian roles and projects.
Seriously one of the most impressive child actors of all time, I can't wait to see him work as an adult! Let's hope Ke Huy Quan gets handed the Indiana Jones franchise. "Professor Short Round, Department of Archeology" has a wonderful ring to it!
Love the idea!
Please do! I would love for him to return to that movie franchise.
This is actually a fantastic idea!!! He's got the talent and the charisma to pull that off.
I agree because Shia labouf ... smh
I really hope he at least has a scene with Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones 5, which just finished filming.
He’s so charming! Asian representation is so lacking in Hollywood it’s so wonderful to see movies like this being made. It’s sad to think we were missing out on him in movies bc there wasn’t anything available
THIS. We need to see everyone represented.
When I seen him in this movie, I was so happy, I wondered: "where has he been all these years?" Hearing his story about his struggle as an Asian actor & now he's returned is really heart warming. I love Asian movies, I loved Crazy Rich Asians too though I am Indigenous Australian.
during all those years, I read he was a martial arts teacher (and instructor in hollywood) can somebody tell me if it's true? because he's very good at that too, he already was as a kid.
@@ginauccelatore6430 Not sure if he was a teacher as such but he was certainly around the field. If I recall correctly, he worked as a martial arts and stunt coordinator alongside the legendary Corey Yuen in several Hong Kong films.
@@goodguyaus thank you
❤❤❤
@@goodguyaus I'm so glad thi is happening to him now, during all these years I thought being out of the movie business was his choice because he liked martial arts more and he was still in hollywood, instructing stuntmen. That must have been fake information and that's why we fans stayed out of it too, not forgetting him (HECK NO) but wanting to leave him alone because we thought it was his choice. I had evn heard he had changed is name to Jonathan Quan to be sure to be left alone.
He said some really important things, especially about lack of Asian roles in the past 20 yrs. It was moving when he shared he really wanted to do this role since it featured a Chinese family, and that made him so happy because that kind of an opportunity didn’t exist before.
"I wanted to be up there with them." Yeah I felt that...I'm glad he got up and did something about it...I'm excited to see this movie.
I haven't been excited about a movie in a long while, (and haven't gone to a theater in how long with the pandemic?) so this is a big deal! 😆
What a delightful man. It's almost like he never stopped being realistic about hollywood, and it guided him to a good and humble life.
MAN, as soon as he started talking it's the same voice! That's awesome that he returned to be in front of the camera. He's a great part of many of our childhoods!
If he doesn't win an Oscar, I'm gonna riot
Just casually comes out of retirement and gives one of the most dynamic emotional performances of the year. What a boss.
Come on. His acting has not improved much since Short Round days. He is impressive in Jackie Chan style action scenes but not in dramatic ones.
@@TheAntsh I am PROUD PROUD PROUD to tell you you were wrong. Key Huy Quan has just won his Oscar tonight.
@@clarykim497 he couldn't have. 95th Academy Awards is scheduled for March 12. Nominations will be announced Jan 24. Unfortunately he is not an Oscar caliber actor and is highly unlikely to be nominated.

Such an appreciative audience for this super wonderful guest.
First thing I noticed: probably one of the loudest audiences I've heard in a while. Really enjoyed his stories. Good for him!

@@EmpyreanLightASMR Very heartwarming. The love and appreciation was palpable!
He absolutely deserves it! Such an endearing guy
It is incredibly difficult not to be moved by this man's earnestness.
dude made me cry or laugh in every single one of his scenes, the way he portrayed the character was so spot on with how my mom is in real life. it’s insane
I never knew Ke Huy Quan's rise to fame story, and I wish I did before but everything for a reason and at the right time. His humility really moved me, which is why I can agree with everyone commenting about how emotional even this interview was, let alone when they watched the film as I did. His genuine passion for just being the best he could be shined through in all the characters he played, and he played the hell out of all of them! The word that keeps coming through to me about him, as a person, is GRATITUDE! He was so appreciative of every opportunity and person who played a part in all the good things he got to experience in life, whether from 20 years ago to present day, reappearing after so long away from the business, and that's a wonderful thing to see and to be. I want to take that to heart and be this genuine and gracious in my personal and professional life, always. "Be kind"...powerful words. ✊🏾
This dude is so open hearted and honest during this interview, even Jimmy appreciates the dude’s wholesomeness. Great to see him back in business and I can’t wait to watch this movie.
Gotta love him! He still have that Short Round’s energy until now
That was probably the sweetest interview I’ve ever seen:
His performance in the EEAAO was so moving. That episode when he's asking everybody to be kind touched my heart so deeply. Such a talent!
This is my 3rd time watching this interview. GIVE THIS MAN ALL THE ACTING JOBS. I could watch talent meets humility like this all day.
this was so wholesome. he was AMAZING in Everything Everywhere All At Once.
he is still have that youthful energy and his voice is timeless and really took me be back to Indiana Jones & goonies. he was definitely my favorite character. love this for him
I honestly felt the gratefulness that radiates from him. I hope he gets wonderful opportunities to represent his people and convey his outstanding talent. He was unbelievable in EEAAO
Omg he even speaks the same way he did in the 80s. His candour and how he said “no it’s not” is straight from Temple of Doom. Welcome back sir!
Totally.
He is Shorty Round
I'm so happy to see Ke Huy Quan back on the screen again. He's a childhood icon for a lot of us and now to see him grow into a grown adult actor is awesome. What an amazing comeback for him.
I love how REAL he is in every interview. He does not shy away from talking about Asian representation (or lack thereof) and how it affected his career trajectory. I'm so, so happy for him that he had this opportunity - it is such an incredible movie, and what a joy to see him on screen again!
I genuinely have never been so happy for one persons success in Hollywood than I am for Ke. What a sweet, sweet man. So deserving.
Goonies is still a favorite. What a life this guy has had 🥰
Just rewatched myself a few days ago on bluray.
I hope to see a Ke huy quan/ sean astin reunion because sean astin is the only goonie I met and I can tell you he's still enthusiastic about it, despite other more famous films he did as a grown up; they're both goonies forever
Super glad he’s back. The youthful enthusiasm and charm he’s always had has never gone away, and he’s quite obviously one of the most likable actors around. He’s grateful for his opportunities and we’re grateful he’s returned to share his talent.
Watching his interviews always makes me cry because he is such an amazing person!! I want him and Brendan Fraser to have all the best roles opportunities from now on
I’m too young for goonies, but this guy is so pure and grateful, he brings me hope.
You’re NEVER too young to be a goonie. Especially nowadays. Do a solid and watch.
Goonies is a timeless classic. Doesn't matter what era you come from. 😀
Agreed, watch the goonies, you wont regret it, it's a classic 80s flick
Aww I so wish you'd been around to experience The Goonies with me and my generation but then you'd be an old fukkr like us so it's okay you arrived when you did. Better late than never I say😎
I saw Goonies...tooooo many times. I got sick of it as a kid!
This is the quietest I've ever seem Jimmy in an interview. Ke is such a great story teller.
You don't know how much I appreciate Ke for telling his authentic story at 5:15 that he stepped away from acting not by choice, but because there was no work for him despite how much he loved acting. That is a small yet powerful move in the right direction for an AA actor to speak his truth
This movie moved me to tears. Everyone did such an incredible job and Ke specifically was just phenomenal. I can’t wait to own this movie. Please keep making more of these interesting stories

I loved every scene that he was in “Everything Everywhere All at Once” . Hope to see more! What a fantastic actor.
everyone needs to see the movie he's promoting here. "everything everywhere all at once" - the movie is superb and he is incredible in it. would never know that he hasn't acted in 20 years
I love, absolutely love that there is more Asian representation these days, but it's not enough. We need ALL asian representation, Cambodia, Laos, Berma, Sri Lanka. It's time, we all have a spotlight.
I'm speaking on behalf of my extended Cambodian/Laos family i love you all.
Absolutely!! We are not a monolith!
I saw the movie last weekend, and I seriously hope we're saying "Oscar nominee Ke Huy Quan" next year. He's THAT good.
Oscars is a joke
What a lovely lovely man. So happy to see him back.
He took a 20 year break from acting and it was like a 2 week break. That shows he’s a great actor.
I've ALWAYS wondered what he's been up to since, he was such a precious childhood memory, and I'm SO pleasantly surprised he's returned to our screens. SO lovely to see and there's something so warm and special to me that his voice still sounds similar ♥️ I'm so glad he's reclaimed his power and place, and I'm so glad it was there for him ♥️ and he's so well spoken and charming; most seasoned celebrities don't even have that and fumble. He's adorable and charming as ever!!! What a joy to get to see him come back to us.
Steven Spielberg use to say he was like a 40 year old in a 12 years old body. Now that he's in his 50s, he still has the child-like charisma he had back then. Quite ironic. So glad he's back, he's so appreciative of this opportunity.
This guys energy is so incredible! Glad he found his way back! He was made for this!
I love this guy so much. You can tell his wholesome character extends to/from the screen of his role in everything everywhere all at once with the stories and perspectives I heard from him in this clip alone.
thank you so much Hollywood for bringing this particular source of pure joy back on screen ... I watched his two movies countless times when I was a kid, later on countless times with my son and now we have him back winning his Oscar ... what a party
So happy that he made the decision to come back and continue showing Asian representation. Ke was amazing in the film that I thought he must've been acting abroad for years! His performance fooled me! Can't wait to watch what comes next!
Love Harrison Ford and all the Indy movies, but let's be serious THIS guy was the best part of that movie!

Man, I love this guy since I was a little boy. That’s one comeback I’m truly happy about.
OMG! Thank you for having him on! In a short interview of just under 10 min, it got me all tearing up. He was honest about not sure if the Asian opportunity was better now than before. I can see his pain. It's 2022 and we are all hoping to see more change, more diversity. Please don't give more opportunities and don't cast anyone else to play an Asian role. It's so touching. I didn't know he is Vietnamese. I love him in the Indiana Jones movie. Love the story of how he got the role and how he came back to acting. Bravo!!! I'm so happy he got that motivation again and a great opportunity for this new exciting project. It is really amazing. I saw the trailer on insta and it was very cool. Michelle and everyone else are legends. It would be so good.
Ke speaks with his heart. It comes through so clearly and I can't wait to watch the movies he makes. 👍👍
He made me cry in his acceptance speech😢 This guy deserves everything, everywhere all at once!
When I was watching Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, I was thinking "wow, what a talented young actor!", And then I knew that he was in EEAAO, I was shocked. Now he won almost every awards. Just amazing and inspiring.
Getting older myself, as everyone does, not much gives me reason to smile anymore, but to see Ke's joy of getting back to doing something he loves...a smile on my face is a total understatement
He didn't want to leave acting, but now that he's back...hope he stays. He's a talented actor.

This young man was a stand out to me in Temple of Doom. I was a little girl …watching it over and over in my bedroom. I could quote all his lines. So happy to see him back at it. 💚🙌
This man was such a part of my childhood, Goonies is on my list of all time favorite movies, it's a lot like Princess Bride, one of those movies you can watch 100 times and see something new.

I imagine that Key Hue Quan at the Oscar’s thought about his past. About how he immigrated into the United States of America and was teased a lot about being Vietnamese and being Asian. But he changed when his brother was auditioning for Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom he was asked if he wanted to try, and Quan responded, “sure, why not?” And when he did he eventually got chosen. Now for the film Everything Everywhere All At Once, it has 7 Oscar awards and Quan is nominated as supporting actor role. Such a great guy 😊
After seeing the movie, I thought he was very recognizable and gorgeous and talented so I naturally searched for his other projects. And to know that this was his return after 2 decades was mind-boggling.
Love to see his return. Still bothered with Hollywood gatekeepers allowing a specific niche or genre to flourish. Great to see the talents all shine in this movie and the ratings it deserves.
I just came back from the film and he was absolutely AWESOME in it. He delivered a powerful performance that just brought out so many different emotions. There may still be not as many roles for Asian actors but I hope he gets more chances for years to come. Plus he looks like such a cool, humble dude whom anyone would want to work with.
