Right to the point. Nothing worse than 20min video that could be done in 5. You have avoided it. Tumbs up. Thank you sir:)
I agree 100%. We try to keep all of our videos to the point.
Sub 250g drones avoid almost all restrictions in Canada. That's a big plus, having a drone that has the capability of the mini 2 and being able to fly it in so many more situations without jumping through all sorts of regulatory hoops is a huge plus for hobbiests.
yes!
now...about that damn geofencing...
And just to put a fine point on what you said...it's not just the $5/year registration fee per drone that you'll have to pay if your drone is >250g...when RemoteID (USA only) goes into full effect:
1) You will have to pay monthly subscription fees to RemoteID USS's to fly your drone and if you don't pay these monthly fees you will be blocked from taking off so you won't be able to just opt out in protest;
2) JohnQ public will be able to find your real time exact piloting location simply by using a free smart phone app so they can come and confront harass you or worse.
3) The USS will store every detail about every flight you take for at least 6months and this data will/could be shared with the FAA in pursuit of investigations/violations...and in theory could be used to implement automated fines (e.g., ala red light cameras).
And additionally you will have to take and pass a piloting test to fly your drone (this will likely be linked to drone registration vs RemoteId)
The registration is not that big of a deal to me BUT the RemoteID is a HUGE deal from my perspective. Monthly fees that will only increase over time (think cable fees) and complete loss of privacy are things you will need to factor in to your decision...Unless we can defeat the FAA RemoteID "standard".
Cheers.
I’m with you. It’s a big issue
@@HalfChrome Yep..I know you are...I just think so many people are ill-informed of what the consequences will be of RemoteID so every time I get the chance I try and paint the picture of what this will mean to people. So many people think >249grams only means that you'll avoid the $5/yr reg fee but as you know it's much more significant than that with RemoteID. And even as bad as RemoteID is for Camera drones...It's catastrophic for the FPV community.
It could be.
I just got my MA2 and have been nothing but paranoid about all these remote ID laws as well but at the end of the day I can’t let it ruin my enthusiasm about something that isn’t even implemented right in this moment. And I have to believe that the community will continue to push against the FAA and hopefully get a more reasonable law implementation.
@@legodude275 Congrats!!!...And you should enjoy it...BUT unfortunately it seems like everyone is taking the approach "I'll worry about it when it gets here" AND "Hopefully someone else in the community will take some action"...When it gets here it will be too late AND If we don't educate ourselves AND take a stand ourselves against this no one is going to do it for us. We as a community need take a stance to fight this or we will get what ever they want to push onto us. I hope the RUclips Channel's will take the mantle to try and organize the community to fight this. I'm jussayin....
No remote ID or registration, Winner Mini. Thats why it was made.
That may change. Plus he is talking about Mini 2.
Mini 1 is old news.
It's valid point for US. In Europe it gets complicated:
> However, you do not need to register yourself if your drone(s):
> 1. weighs less than 250g and has no camera or other sensor able to detect personal data; or
> 2. even with a camera or other sensor, weighs less than 250g, but is a toy (this means that its documentation shows that it complies with ‘toy’ Directive 2009/48/EC);
I think it does not really matter if drone weights 249 or 899 grams. Over 900 there are other restrictions (current one is that you have to notify nearby airstrips about presence, future one allows flying above random peoples (not crowds) with lighter drones and I guess there are limitations for heavy drones.
Pavel Peřina the new „special“ flight group out of sight will most probably have a weight restriction of 249g in Europe, and coutries like swiss allow drones under 250g in nature protdction zones. There are many points to stay under that limit, especially if you plan to travel with it.
Nope. What kind of drones does that anyway?
@Jabo Colitri read up on regulations. Weight doesn't matter if a drone has a camera or sensor the pilots needs a license. They're easy to get
comparing Merc G with new Jimny...actually, I sold air 2 to get mini 2 ...more friendly to ski touring, freeride snowboarding for quick shots in the wilderness... in minus 10C and above 2000m there is no room to play with ´the camera settings´
The Air 2! That AirSense is a game changer! Adding ways to keep manned aircraft safe is worth the price. And the video and photo capabilities are unreal 😱
AirWorthy Tours if you don’t travel you are absolutely right. If you do, there’s no way around the mini 2 atm.
thanks for the comparison. I'm in a very windy area so think the larger one will stay better, but I'm surprised that the wind is almost never mentioned in reviews.
I was hoping you mention the obstacle avoidance on the AIR 2 and there's none on the MINI 2
Amazing detailed review of both drones. Thanks a bunch!
The features that really stand out is picture quality. The mini would be good to use for taking photos without the occasional shakiness of the hands. I just started using the Mavic-air-2 and have gotten some great shots. Still much more to learn.
At seeing some videos is it worth the approx $500cdn price difference between the fly more package. Image quality wise I’d say no. In a lot of situations I’d say the image quality is almost equal. Active track and the additional sensors are a big difference but if you don’t need those I’d say it’s not really worth it. If you can afford it though then the mavic air 2 would be the choice. I think the mini 2 can handle almost anything though
I think you’ve nailed it
Except headwinds :(
Precisely, that’s the whole problem 🥴
i want and need active tracking...if it wasn’t for that...I would buy the Mini 2 in a heart beat.
so now what 🤷♂️, i can’t afford the Mavic Air 2 and the Mini 2 hasn’t got that bloody active tracking i really want . Still not sure what to do..wait maybe? Is there a chance that in 1 year they can include active tracking with a Mini 3 perhaps 🤔🤷♂️
I don’t want to wait but also not inclined to spend the xtra and also not happy to NOT have active tracking- I am screwed 😬😩
Bugger 😪
I forgot about the wind- true..that might make it a bit less painful $$$ wise in the end BUT to spend the extra how much?? $400 US that’s like AU $550.- 😱😱😱 crap 💩 - still screwed 😤 😂😂
@@1catchem end of lifetime and being sold out.
Dont think its the best choice now if you want it to last some years further. Parts and all, warranty and if retailers can support parts and things for it.
And the weight is more too than 249 gram.
It will be like the gopro karma drone. Problem to deal with now if you want to have it for the next 3++ years
It’s so close but the air wins, still I use the mini & mini2 most of the time because it’s small and don’t draw to much attention 👍🏾
Really nice informative video :) Thank you so much Half Chrome 👍🙂
I went with Mavic Air 2 simply because of its flying characteristic and the sensors . I live in an area with mostly high winds at various altitudes and I feel regardless of upgrades to mini 2 it’s still not as capable as Air 2 when it comes to flying and coping with wind . The Gimble also is less sturdy than Air 2 which you don’t hear about much
Honestly this is probably for those that don't just want the "basics" they want some features and they are looking to upgrade later and this is especially friendly at a great price.
The mini 2 is the much better buy if on a budget. I’ve seen so many RUclips videos side by side in good light you can’t even see the difference. They upgraded everything about the mini 1 including now 4k, better in wind than the mini 1, and better controller.
The air 2 is worth it if you have a little bit extra money with a few different features.
I still think professionals should get mavic pro 2 or better yet autel evo 2.
BTW, Nice video...glad to see you guys dig into the advantages of the MA2 in a bit more detail (e.g., Spotlight feature, etc.)
Thorough video, very informative. I fly alot at the beach and mountains., and the mini just can't handle the wind. In gust the whole nose of the drone will move, the air 2 slice's right thru the wind. Don't get me wrong , I do love the mini. I like the camera mount 😁😂 that was a very cool shot of the mini flying
Thanks
That was the Insta360 go
Very very true! I hiked my mavic air 2 up to the summit of a 14'er over the summer and it handled the wind very well, I would not have trusted the Mavic mini 2
Don't trust dji mini, i flew it over the ocean and almost lost it. It cannot handle mild to strong winds.!
The Mini 2 is far better in my opinion, mostly because of its drastically cheaper price.
Not only is it less than half the price up front, but I live in Toronto, and living in a big city and flying a larger drone isn’t as viable for me. Transportation of such a small drone is drastically easier, as well as the ability to fly it in more places since it’s under 250g (and you don’t need a part 107 license which also means the regulations on this drone are far more lenient). I don’t think enough people are mentioning that the whole point of this drone is it’s portability and viability in an city environment.
In this case, it’s the best drone on the market, hands down.
Next year I’m going to live in Toronto, I’m planning on getting a Mavic Air 2 or Mini 2. How about laws regarding both of them?
@@hectorleonardojimenezmateo6131 I highly suggest the mini 2 for just having fun. Pearson airport makes flying in Toronto a pain and a half.
You’ll have to research. I’m not in Canada, don’t know their rules
Thanks guys for your feedback, I’m going to seriously consider the mini 2 as I’d use it for non professional YT videos.
Excellent review (as always). I think that this is a compelling model for most consumers unless you are getting more serious about photo or video. As with all DJI drones, the high resale value would make moving up to fancier model later pretty easy.
Thank you for trying to help. I have been trying to convince my wife that I "need" to upgrade my cheap entry level SJRC F11 to an Air 2 and had just about succeeded when DJI throw a spanner in the works and release the Mini 2 so I was wondering if the additional cost is worth it.
I still haven't decided. The mini would be great to take for day trips but I think that our annual vacations to the Scottish islands where we will encounter more wind make the Air 2 a better bet.
Just flew in high winds with the mini 2. Destroyed the battery.
@@HalfChrome I think that answers my question. Sourcing new batterys quickly on the Outer Hebrides wouldn't be easy and a two day journey each way to get back later to take missing shots means it makes sense have something more robust. I know that I could take loads of batteries but if one burns out, so might the others.
@@tonysutton6559 He didn't mean "destroyed" the battery. He means the flight time is killed.
I agree with him, coming back in a headwind, it goes from 18 min, to 4 min remaining!
@@foam27 I guessed that when I saw the other video.
My main worry about the Mini 2 is the wind. I like to go off to Scottish Islands and other coast places which tend to be windy. I also want to film some sailing stuff and that usually involves the wind as well.
Would like to hear the comparison on how much noise they create during flight.
mini 2 seems to be the quietest of all the DJI drones.
Of the DJI drones, yes
One nice thing about them using the same remote for both drones is that if you’re not going to fly them both at the same time you can still carry both drones but you only need to take one remote
True
Air 2 hands down! It's just a better platform. Takes wind a lot better as well
Truth.
True but for a beginner ( like me ) thinking about buying a drone in my opinion mini is the better option
@@anselmgademann9407 Not really because the air 2 has obstacle avoidance all around, and will make it back in the high winds.
@@foam27 true but also in Europe the mini is better cause it‘s under 250 Grams
And in Europe all drones over 250 grams need to be 150 m away from all people and objects/buildings cause of safety reasons
Actually the air 2 is still better because it keeps you away from those buildings and people due to the rules, since you are a beginner that’s a good thing. 😁👌
The extra power of the mavic air is really appealing for my backpacking trips where wind can be high ,,
And it's extra weight also helps greatly in strong winds.
For someone who doesn't do much drone work, the Mini 2 is perfect for me. I have a music video coming up where I need one, and if I got into commercial work, it'd be fine for a while. I plan on getting the Mini 2 Fly More package, but for almost $400 more (brand new), I just can't justify the Air 2 Fly More package.
When the Mini 2 doesn't make it back in a headwind will you wish you spent $400 more?
Did you notice if the Mini 2 now turns like the Mavic Air 2 (like a fixed-wing craft); vs how the Mini has a 'skidding-type' turning style ?
I Figured since it got an upgraded remote (Occusync), motors, etc. may have updated it's flight characteristics.. .
I just bought a mini2 and noticed this. It’s kinda cool looking when you turn.
You didn't cover wind speed or the "motor speed error" issue that the mini 1 always has. I believe the Mini 2 has addressed the issue.
Just sold my MA2 and planning on getting a Mini 2. I do not make money from my drone LOL why investing that much?
Solid point
Idk for some reason these don’t interest me enough to upgrade from my spark. I’ll be waiting for the mavic pro 3!
As a beginner I was super excited for the DJI 2 I still haven’t moved up yet the DJI 2 is my first drone I’m so glad the pricing this coming down while the quality spot on.
I got the mini 2 I want that air 2 bc that extra mile and half it'll go.
Compared the two drones or Remotes at 6:04
I'm thinking of buying a drone, thank you for your valuable information.
I bought the Mini 2, but I wish I would’ve gotten the Air 2 it’s always windy where I live and I always have to make sure to fly back down wind to make it home.
Dji mini 2 and the mavic air 2 has the same level 5 wind recestence so whats the problem they have same wind recestence
Not the same when you are actually flying.
Superb review.
Great comparison. And nice soccer ball juggling skills. ;)
Hi. I would like to learn to fly drones from zero. Which is the right choice? Which has the less risky more pleasent learning experience. I would go for the Mini 2, but having all those sensors to avoid obstacles, the Air 2 is very attractive and reassuring about not having catastrophic crashes!
Both are good options. Or go inexpensive with the Tello.
What is hanging from the bottom of your mini 2 in the video ?
Good thing you had spotter! Coulda really hurt someone with that flying brick.😅
Nice one Mark Roughalo
Very helpful
I appreciate this video. I feel that the Mavic Air 2 may do better with the winds of the ocean, here in The Bahamas :)
Yes. For sure
You would loose any Mini so quick out there!
Where do you live man... it looks like the "Truman Show".
On set at the Truman show
Lol
have both.. even though mini is cute and capable for most casual people who just want to have some fun flying get videos etc....air 2 is a real drone mini feels like a toy really...
Have one and keep wife or have both and get divorce. I'll have to think about that one. 😕
@@tonysutton6559 have 4dji and always trying to hide them from wife hahaha
what's define a toy drones? is because lightweight despite the quality of the images/footages?
@@lunarisregalia9341 quality of plastics and lightweight.and the way it flies etc..but it really does amazing job for most of the people.footage is good
Toy drones are less expensive and have poor cameras
I'm watching this (and some other similar videos) a year later. Now there are two newer drones with upgraded features. I'm wondering how I can get my hands on one of those Mavic Air 2's for cheap. I don't even need the controller, because I have the "little guy" Mini 2. The Mini is awesome for flying in the city here in Canada, which I'm not allowed to do with a bigger drone here in Canada with my basic license. But the bigger sensor with 48 megapixel, plus the tracking seems like a good reason to go hunting. Was even looking at crashed drones to fix up myself, but on eBay people seem to think that their old stuff is worth gold. Thanks for this great video. You threw me more questions to ponder, instead of answering the ones on my mind 🤣
Good luck
People never really believe the actual wind capabilities of the mini 2. I've had 2 huge incredibly powerful Fimi x8se's and I can say without a noticeable difference at all, I honestly can fly my mini 2 in a occasional 30mp wind with gusts, as either of my Fimi which were the biggest heaviest gps drones i'd ever had. I honestly think most of the difference is in people's mind, less size is just less mass to be effected by the wind. As long as power to weight ratios are minded in the engineering as I can say has obviously been taken into account with the mini 2, the wind performance differences very marginal, in most comparisons negligible. Fly happy all✌️.
Trying to understand why you said that the original Air was the worst?
A straight up marvel of technology.
The only 2 things that I believe it "suffered" from, was its flight time and the noise the props made.
It's in the top 3 fastest DJI drones and if you tweak the expo and gain...its even faster and more agile.
I have had over 170 successful flight with zero issues.
With all the features and a technically better camera than the Mavic Pro...the only thing that really would have made it any better would have been Ocusync...and really that was resolved by using 5.8ghz and a parabolic reflector.
Some facts, some opinion on my part...but even now nearing 2021...its a very relevant drone.
Of course I would love the Air 2, or the Mini 2...but every person's place is different for different reasons.
Even when it finishes running its course,I will keep it just to look at.
The design and tech incorporated into the Air in 2018 was ground breaking...
I just hope DJI decides to veer back towards its form factor.
The common Mavic form factor is awesome, but very much played out.
...just my 2 cents worth.
You are right. It is an awesome drone. Range was terrible. I agree that the form factor on the original air is superior.
Yes you are right , the AIR (1) is soooo good , if they did Ocusync,a bigger Batttery and better Props ,i buy it again. But now the Air 2 is far better than the first Mavic Air.
The Times and Technical ,change very fast.. In 2021 the Air should be very good ,because its under 500 grams
@@joschspike9705 Why is "under 500 grams" significant?
Thanks for your comparison, I was going to update my Mini 1 which I just sold on eBay, but I still have the Pro 2 and Air 2. I don't need the Mini 2 as the Air 2 is only a little bigger but much better in many ways and at the end of this year in many countries, all drones will require ID and registration, no matter the weight!
You might as well sell your Mini.
What countries will require drone registration?
You’ll have to check your own rules and regulations
There wont be any ID or registration in norway under 249 grams and we follow EU regulations...
In EU mini 2 is best option if you dont want lots of restrictions and headaches.
You dont have to register yourself and no need for license.
You can now fly close to people, obstacles and property, no more 150 meters.
You can also fly blos if not above 50 meters.
You can now overpass people too if no other options.
You can also fly close to people if they are groups under 100 and if people has escape possibility if the drone comes diving down.
When travel you also have the same in EU and you dont have to register and pay like $35 every time and the deregistration when you finish and leave the countries..
Air 2 will be more a problem than what you get in return.
You can buy mini 2 fly more combo + crash it and buy a new mini 2 for the same price as 1 Air 2 drone with fly more lol
@@rotojo2 do tourists need to register their drones in eu when visiting?
Perfect Spotlight shot
Answer is no. Because I would buy the mavic pro if I was using it for a business. Mini 2 is awesome.
Do a thrust test pls
The mini 2 is good drone but air 2 is superior. The regulation's and 250gr doesn't make mini 2 better from air 2 just make it suitable to more customers.
No
@@versatileduplicity9313 ?
What about obstacle avoidance?
What about it?
Has same video deatail of both drone in day?
i think FAA posted that drones like the mavic mini still need to be registered even its less than 250grams. Also you forget to mention the air 2 has bigger sensor size than the mini 2, which usually means better low light and dynamic range. The question how good is that sensor , well you could make one comparing both
They do have to be registered to use commercially
@@HalfChrome for recreation purpose no need? Last time I check FAA they did specify that drone like mavic mini even at 249 grams need to be registered
That isn’t the law
You don't register the drone, you register YOURSELF with the FAA. :P
Yes. Technically.
Great video, thank you.
One question 🙋🏻♂️
Is there any news about a new DJI 3 lineup?
Nope
Mavic 3 October pics are here now
So, whats the verdict?
Up to you to decide. I’d choose MA2
Mini 2 , less headaches (EU)

Great comparison. For a professional means, og air or mini 2? Transmission vs obstacle avoidance?
Mini 2. Camera quality
Thank you much need it information
Which one is the best out of Mini and Mavic Air 2?
Mavic air 2
Thanks! I think my next drone after Mini will be likely Air3 or something. I would like to have RAW files, better dynamic range and better wind resistance. Mini is fine, but I don't like unreliable wifi, rare and scary motor speed warnings, strong wind warnings and low visibility. On the other hand drone flying is so much restricted that Mini is perfectly fine for flying within legal limits.
You can use remote to charge the phone .... yeah, i often wish the opposite :( Mavic Mini controller does not have quickcharge at least so it discharges slowly, but I can't stop it.
mini 2 does not use wifi its been upgraded
Hi Chris... I have plan to by dji drone.. which one on your opinion..that more value for money >> mini 2 or mavic air 2,, n which one more easy n safe for newbie pilot?
They are both excellent choices.
The Mini 2 doesn't have active track? 🤯 I thought even the Mini 1 had it?
neither one did but you can sort of simulate active track with the quick shots function. they don’t have it because they don’t have any obstacle avoidance so it couldn’t active track even if it was programmed. and putting the sensors required for active track would put the drone over 249g
Active Track now available with the 3rd party Litchi app for the Mini 1. Hopefully it comes out for the Mini 2 soon!
Richard Street did they say that its confirmed coming out for mini 2. If so im definetly ordering one
@@eduardogrullon696 Hasn't been confirmed but most of the effort was probably optimising Litchi for the reduced functionality of the DJI Go Fly app so can't be as much work to make Litchi work with the Mini 2 now it's working with the Mini 1. It took them 4 months from the Mini 1 SDK being released so depends if DJI have released the SDK for the Mini 2. The SDK tells developers how to integrate software with the hardware. I'm taking a wild guess at something by March? But depends how much Covid affects their the operations. I'm confident it will be released though at some point.
thank you

Based on overall performance of both drones, Air 2 was just unbeatable~ a nearly the perfect drone in everyone's mind in 2020~
Johnny Yu except you want to travel and stay legal, than there’s no way around the mini 2. Ordered one as Addition to my other drones, and i love that thing. 30 minutes of flighttime in a jacket, no registration nearly everywhere around the world, it’s amazing. Sure, you have less features, but i didn’t use the on the air after the novelty wore of, so the air is mostly for fun atm, the mini stays with me
Erebos me too..I really wanted to the Air, but the regulations where I am are a pain, and it is too big physically. I also like that the signal satellite system is strong on the mini. Lost a spark 18 Mon this ago and still hurting. Flyaway.

Yes. It would be a modest upgrade.

Not yet.
It will work when the temperature is below 0 C. But the flying time will be shorter and also sometimes the software will warn you when it is too cold. So it is better to keep the battery warmer before you fly the mini when it is too cold.

You can use it
Ill just wait for mavic 3
It will not exist beacuse you have the aire 2 pro
The video just handle's about how good air2 is and how bad mini2 are. 17 good things air2 and 2 good things mini 2. Why do this video?
People need to know
@@HalfChrome the price then? 570Euros more then 🤣 Not worth it in Europe with the new rules coming. 150meters from buildings, houses, People. Useless to own mavic air 2
@@emilabrahamsson3065 Move out of the gestapo, to the land of freedom ;D
@@foam27 the land of freedom does not exist lol
Just an illusion.
You know FAA is putting all this in EU?
Your freedom is only being extended to the point where EU is fully functional with new rules and regulations and people has accepted the new normal - then your land of freedom will have it implemented too , because it comes from same place all this anyway...
dji and faa is controlling airspace in eu and other countries too... not just national and local laws in a country.
249 grams will be best for most people unless you want headaches lol
7:32 what is attached to the drone?
Insta360 Go camera
How about if you have the Mavic 2 Pro?
The Mavic 2 pro is awesome. Different drone.
@@HalfChrome do you think the Air 2 is better than the Mavic 2 Pro?
@@Parrothed5150 no the M2P is a better drone, with a much better camera
No. But they are both excellent
I had the original Mavic Air and it was a great starter drone. BUT because the Pro 2 bumped the camera sensor to a full 1”, my video is significantly better. That sensor is as big as my Sony a7iii camera. The Air2 is a good value if you can’t afford the Pro2. But as with most electronics, spend the most you can afford. Buying and upgrading is MORE expensive. Cant go wrong with DJI period imho. Happy droning, stay healthy....and WEAR A MASK! (not sure how well your drone will fly with one on tho. Lol)
ie have already the mini 2. Chould ie get the aire 2 just for traking mode end for better video end photos end the asteroid mode. It's nessery to upgrade only for this option????
Probably not necessary.
@@HalfChrome is the battery dji dangerous do wee need a safty box . Can the battery explode like any time for any no reason . What do you think you have drone I am scared about that battery because it's lipo
The DJI batteries are the safest but it’s still a lipo.
@@HalfChrome okay do you youse a safety box?
For storage yes. While charging no but I monitor it.
you keep saying this guy very confusing
DJI says that Mini 2 does support 4K-hyperlapse aswell?!
Not currently
@@HalfChrome thanks!
THE AIR 2 IS DEFINITELY MORE WORTH IT THAN THE MINI 2
Depends on where you live. In sweden you must be 150meters from People, houses and buildongs. Useless drone
To who?
@@foam27 to who? New rules in Europe, drones over 250 grams need to have 150meters distance to everything.
@@emilabrahamsson3065 Ahh, I live in the land of the free, so no gestapo over here.
@@emilabrahamsson3065 and the Mini is much better for beginners
( also I live in Europe so yeah same rules apply to me )
Hi Half Chrome, I have mini 2 but my dji fly ap do not have zoom function and 4k, like that 1x 2x.. 4x. can you pls advise what went wrong. i use to have this but after reintalling app it gone. thanks
Update the firmware and app
@@HalfChrome i did still the same
Did you watch this video? ruclips.net/video/U5_FDi_zpEc/видео.html
@@HalfChrome yes I did, my remote control is not this one, that is the samller one for mini2 which only does camera move. There is no function button. The only button is for return home
Perhaps you have the original Mavic Mini. It does not have zoom.
why don't you use the propeller guards if you plan to crash it all the time lol ?
Touché
All we care about is great video, run time and speed
What is the thing with the US flag in the background? DJI is Chinese top notch...
We are proud to be in the states. Plus it looks awesome.
