Just watched you for the first time. Up until now, the best drone I've ever had is the Hubsan h501s x4. This was the perfect video for me. Thanks to you, I'm alao leaning towards the Mavic mini. The final factor in my decision is the weight. I assume that the mini doesn't need to be registered. I've been dying to be able to point the camera up and down as well. I assume they both have that option. I hope that someone can correct me if any of this is wrong. When I get my stimulus check, I've "Finally" decided to go to that next level. To have a gimbal is also a luxury that Ive3 never had. This is really exciting to me. Now I just need to find the best price for the mini. Maybe even a refurbished one. Great comparison video I have had a GoPro Karma for years. It works well enough but is totally impractical for most outdoor sports I do (hiking, biking, paddling). I think the Mini will do what I want and just slip in to my daypack without even noticing it.
Being my first drone purchase, I've narrowed it to these two. For the cost, (in case I crash or lose it), and the fact that it will suit my basic needs as a hobbies or vacation drone, I'm going with the Mini. And no regulations. That's huge

I just want to have fun with it, get some great shots and video, see the world from up high and not have to worry about crashing $1,500 into the water or high up in some tree. After a lot of reviews I think this is the one.
Let's face it - they're both pretty amazing drones. The price and overall capabilities of the Mavic Air makes it a very tempting offer - and bet it's great fun! But think I'll probably play it safe and go for the extra signal strength, obstacle avoidance and wind resistance abilities of the Mavic Air. The speed sounds brilliant too!
Don’t make me watch a 11 minute video comparing two drones just to end it in a tie. Plus it’s obvious you planned this when you gave the mini a point for it’s camera even though the air has the better one according to you and DJI
4K does NOT equate better image quality! That is one of the biggest misconceptions. And not this was not planned out. I literally tallied the points as I created the edit.

I was thinking about getting the mini.. but I actually found a used air with t three batteries ..in excellent condition for $400 on Craigslist.. but I don't think the air is worth twice as much as the mini.. I changed the props to master airscrew It's definitely helps with the high-pitched of the stock DJI props.. I've been flying RC for 35 years now.. so this is the first for me for pressing a button and actually having something come back..lol keep up the great videos. ☺️
Tony Lars , get an evo, don’t waste your money on a drone that won’t let you fly where you want to, DJI has horrible geo fencing built into there drones and it doesn’t work properly. Now that being said , if you live and are always going to fly somewhere your positive this won’t be an issue for you , then I would say any DJI drone will be money well spent . Their drones are tough as nails, I’ve crashed both of mine and was sure they were trashed. But a couple of props and they were flying again minutes later. I say that to be fair, they are great drones when they allow you to take off that is. Just check the airspace you will be flying in before you drop coin on a DJI drone. Good luck to you!
Found a local mavic air flymore with total one hour of flight time for 500 CAD never been crashed. Picking it up tomorrow, was going to grab a mavic mini for around the same price new but for an almost new mavic air flymore for the same price I’m elated!!! Also where I am we get pretty horrible winds in the prairies, want a heavier drone to have some more slack.
if you considered the Use market, you can get the mavic air for around $500 with accessories. i bought mine for $475 in great shape and before that i bought a spark with controller and extra accessories for $245 back when it cost around 500. other than registering your drone you might get the best with the air.
Really loved the fact that this video showed the real world performance of the mavic mini camera system compared to the mavic air. Thought that the lack of RAW would be an issue but the jpegs look great SOOC!

I did watch that's why im commenting!lol. don't be salty. its just a chat. extra 500 gets lot more functionality that's besides the point. Camera quality and functions are more pronounced in the air period. if you are into filmmaking the air would do you much better. if you want some quick easy footage the mini is great too.
I think the Mini misses some important features like 360° shots or the "follow subject" option. I think they could be implemented (also 4K and more FPS since its the same cam) but then nobody would buy the Air. Or they update it when they take the Air out of the market. I am currently in Thailand and the Air is almost nowhere available anymore. They say the Air 2 could be released in 2020. So they won´t receive the Mavic Air anymore. In the PoweBuy store, the Air was available for a fantastic discount price of 20.000 Baht, wich makes about 600€. But sold out immediately.
I think I'm finally going to put money down for the mavic mini. It will be great next to my Inspire 2 and Tello. Inspire 2 for pro work and the mini for everything else. Last drone I think I'll get after that is an fpv drone
I had a Mini and now have an Air. If both are same price then the Air is far superior but at half the price the Mini is superb. I was lucky enough to pick up my mavic air fly more for cheaper than the standard Mini so sold my Mini.

Hi there. It's a good comparison, but there is a test that can't be made at that point, it's durability. The air is a tank, I'm flying it for a year and half, , and it never failed me. I crashed it twice (only, thanks to its sensors) without a dent. I flew it in 15 different countries , from zero to 4000 m high, in minus 10 temperature up to 45 degree without a problem. I'm using low noise propellers that really helps to reduce the noise, and improve quite a bit the flight time. Last : having the possibility to do VDO in manual is a big plus so definitely, I think the Air is superior, but of course if I did not have any drone, I'd probably start with the mini.
Not totally fair. The Mavic Mini has cut a lot of corners in order to keep the weight down, most notably the side sensors, which is why there is no active tracking, which is a key feature of the Mavic Air. I would certainly checkout the Air to decide whether you need that extra $400 feature, amazing though it is. I was almost convinced to buy the Mini, but it's worth the extra stretch to get into semi-pro territory.
You can actually shoot some some cool 200 megapixel 360 Panoramas with Mavic Air, and when filming flying with the Litchi app are not to forget the mini cannot 😥but thank you for an earnest and professional Review
Mavic Air is sensational for what it is. Sure photos are not the best but the 4k video is great at 100mpbs. Even 2.7k is more than enough.I flew mine 1.2km easily out to a reef from the beach. Long enough range ,very stable Im very happy with it.
So in the mavic mini you can't fix your shutter speed on 60 and use ND filters to get the correct exposure? Because for the video to be smooth your shutter speed always needs to be twice your frame rate

Have to say that I was looking for a second drone that was friendlier for the traveller (I currently have a Phantom2/GoPro combination). The Mavic Air was definitely on the list, but the price was putting me off from committing. As soon as the Mavic Mini made an appearance it became a no brainer. A plus for me here in the UK is that just this month the CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) now requrie operators of remote craft weighing more than 250g need to pass a test and pay a fee to register their craft, which obviously I will not need to do for the Mini. Bonus.
Hey my buddy and I had the same problem with the diagonal black bars going across the screen. It was so annoying. Called DJI and they had us reset camera settings back to factory and format the USB card and the problem on the controller screen went away. It has something to do with modified exposure settings and transporting the drone, at least that is what DJI tech said
I had a Mavic Air and it got stolen. Then I got a Mavic Mini and it lost connection in the city and plummeted to the ground. I wish the connection was better. I preferred the mini over the air because it was simpler to use for a newbie like me. But no bueno if it cannot be used in suburb cities. Thanks for the video.

A comparison of two different levels of drones. The Mavic Air and Mavic Mini are not even close enough for a comparison. When it comes to requirements and portability the Mini kills it. If you want all the goodies in the way of features that DJI offers its the Air. One is going to be better than the other in completely different categories. They were purposely built to do different things. Its like trying to compare a Toyota Prius to a Porsche GTR3. Useless comparison in my opinion. But good video for highlighting the features of each drone, which has been done thousands of times over already.
Can we talk about your RAW to JPG comparison for photo quality? RAW isn’t meant to look better straight out of the camera, people shoot in RAW because it captured more information so you can retain details in the shadows and highlights when editing them. Overall great video though!
Great video! For some strange reason when i shoot at 120fps and then put the footage in post it is already slowed down AND sometimes it speed ramps all by it self like i edited it to do that AND today i shot something at 30fps and when i played the footage back its nice slow mo witch makes zero sense at all at 30fps 🤷♂️🤦♂️🤷♂️ I REALLY hope u could shine some light on this b.s Thanx
Video was great in helping me decide to purchase the Mavic Mini but wish you would have mentioned the ActiveTrack ... that is a huge plus for what I want to use it for and I may have got the Air instead.
You didn't mention that the Mavic Mini does not support active tracking, or waypoint missions, or point-of-interest orbiting, or even simple headless or Tap to Fly mode -- features generally available even in GPS drones that cost less than $100. In fact, when it comes to autonomous flying features that are useful for getting smoothly executed "cinematic" shots, I do believe the Mini is the least capable GPS drone on the market. If I had known that such basic features are missing, I would never have bought a Mini. Now, I have to hope that third-party apps like Litchi will eventually supply them, if and when DJI opens up the SDK interface.
I just got mine a few days ago and it does have a bit of option now it seems if you press on auto it gives you some shutter options and such. Must have been a upgrade because when i tap on the auto it says manual
wut? Did the mavic mini get some features upgraded by default since this video came out? I bought the drone and it can record in 60FPS 1080p, 30FPS 2K.
More weight should have been given to some features. For example, sensors, flight time, being under FAA weight have more value than onboard storage. If Mini had 1 feature, avoidance sensors: Clear win.
how about how they fly when reaching max ceiling.... im in CO and it is not uncommon for me to want to shoot something on a mountain that is over 8k feet. how would the mini do when at its max 3000m height.

Hello all Drone experts and enthusiasts. Question for you. I've been considering getting the DJI Mavic Air or Pro Platinum edition. I'm quite new to flying but I do need obstacle avoidance on it. After some research, it looks like while platinum pro is a lot quieter and has occusync, it lags on 3 way sensors and apparently the gimbal is not as protected. Can any of you shed your thoughts and opinions on these points?
Personally, the most important feature: crash avoidance sensors, crash avoidance sensors, crash avoidance sensors..... My drone experience tells me I shall not trust my drone skills and nake eyes all the time, these sensors do works!
Comparing drones, or any consumer products actually, is not about who scores more in a "1v1 / challenge by challenge" showdown. It's about what each particular consumer needs within their budget consideration. So this point system is not particularly useful and can even sway viewers into a decision that may not suit their needs.
I am using my Mavic Air to mid summer 2020, new rules coming and with the 249g of the Mavic Mini I don't have to school myselv with a test and all that, just need to register as a pilot (and that I already am) In strict places and countries mini will be king, though I bet they don't have the capacity to chase drone pilots in the middle of a wood or mountain haha, maybe give urban pilots some trouble. Fly safe.

Nice video, thanks. I bought the Mini because of weight and portability. The video is good for me and the low noise is a plus. The noise of the Air is not only louder but also in annoying frequencies. The better video of the Mini may be related with the better Ambarella processor the Mini has.
i found the mavic mini footage more videoish than cinematic, yes its sharper cuz its target audience is for more of a personal drone than a professional drone, Mavic air is easier to grade and be that sharp as the mini shot if edited correctly.
i think a great video would be adding the DJI fpv on the DJI mini !!!! it can hold the weight can dead center clear of the blades wow wow what a great package that would be

It's good to know you can do an exposure lock on the mini. That was my biggest apprehension about looking into this one.

Can we talk about your RAW to JPG comparison for photo quality? RAW isn’t meant to look better straight out of the camera, people shoot in RAW because it captured more information so you can retain details in the shadows and highlights when editing them. Overall great video though!

Great video! For some strange reason when i shoot at 120fps and then put the footage in post it is already slowed down AND sometimes it speed ramps all by it self like i edited it to do that AND today i shot something at 30fps and when i played the footage back its nice slow mo witch makes zero sense at all at 30fps 🤷♂️🤦♂️🤷♂️ I REALLY hope u could shine some light on this b.s Thanx
Video was great in helping me decide to purchase the Mavic Mini but wish you would have mentioned the ActiveTrack ... that is a huge plus for what I want to use it for and I may have got the Air instead.
In the end was my bad not to research the Mavic Air more
You didn't mention that the Mavic Mini does not support active tracking, or waypoint missions, or point-of-interest orbiting, or even simple headless or Tap to Fly mode -- features generally available even in GPS drones that cost less than $100. In fact, when it comes to autonomous flying features that are useful for getting smoothly executed "cinematic" shots, I do believe the Mini is the least capable GPS drone on the market. If I had known that such basic features are missing, I would never have bought a Mini. Now, I have to hope that third-party apps like Litchi will eventually supply them, if and when DJI opens up the SDK interface.

I just got mine a few days ago and it does have a bit of option now it seems if you press on auto it gives you some shutter options and such. Must have been a upgrade because when i tap on the auto it says manual

The mini is extremely good for the price point - but let’s not discredit the Air. It does everything a Pro can, but in a smaller package.

wut? Did the mavic mini get some features upgraded by default since this video came out? I bought the drone and it can record in 60FPS 1080p, 30FPS 2K.
I got the Mavic Mini I love it. I flew some flood water recently with it and it did a great job for me.

More weight should have been given to some features. For example, sensors, flight time, being under FAA weight have more value than onboard storage.
If Mini had 1 feature, avoidance sensors: Clear win.
"doesn't have to be registered" if operating as a hobbyist . . . Part 107 operations still require registration. Great review !

how about how they fly when reaching max ceiling.... im in CO and it is not uncommon for me to want to shoot something on a mountain that is over 8k feet. how would the mini do when at its max 3000m height.

Hello all Drone experts and enthusiasts. Question for you. I've been considering getting the DJI Mavic Air or Pro Platinum edition. I'm quite new to flying but I do need obstacle avoidance on it. After some research, it looks like while platinum pro is a lot quieter and has occusync, it lags on 3 way sensors and apparently the gimbal is not as protected. Can any of you shed your thoughts and opinions on these points?
Personally, the most important feature: crash avoidance sensors, crash avoidance sensors, crash avoidance sensors.....
My drone experience tells me I shall not trust my drone skills and nake eyes all the time, these sensors do works!
Comparing drones, or any consumer products actually, is not about who scores more in a "1v1 / challenge by challenge" showdown. It's about what each particular consumer needs within their budget consideration. So this point system is not particularly useful and can even sway viewers into a decision that may not suit their needs.
I don't think you're using the full 100mbs bandwidth at 1080p with the Mavic Air.

I am using my Mavic Air to mid summer 2020, new rules coming and with the 249g of the Mavic Mini I don't have to school myselv with a test and all that, just need to register as a pilot (and that I already am)
In strict places and countries mini will be king, though I bet they don't have the capacity to chase drone pilots in the middle of a wood or mountain haha, maybe give urban pilots some trouble. Fly safe.

I found a mavic air fly more in like new condition for $500... Would you go for a like new Mavic air or a $500 sealed mavic mini?

I bought the Mini because of weight and portability. The video is good for me and the low noise is a plus.
The noise of the Air is not only louder but also in annoying frequencies.
The better video of the Mini may be related with the better Ambarella processor the Mini has.
i found the mavic mini footage more videoish than cinematic, yes its sharper cuz its target audience is for more of a personal drone than a professional drone, Mavic air is easier to grade and be that sharp as the mini shot if edited correctly.
