  • I had read about Trambahía, the new Cádiz TramTrain, so I thought I'd go and have a look and take a ride.
    The TramTrain entered passenger service in October 2022 after a 20 year gestation. This "start-stop" project was hamstrung by delays caused by financial instability over the last few years in Spain, but eventually the work has been completed and the line has been opened.
    Spain has other trams that also run on dedicated lines, but this one, so they say in Cádiz, is the only one that runs on a Spanish Iberian gauge mainline.
    This is my first video from a short trip to Spain which I undertook in December 2022 and I hope you enjoy it. There will be more videos from Spain released in the coming weeks.
    Departure: Cádiz, Spain
    Destination: Pelagatos, Spain
    Distance: 24 km / 15 miles
    Duration: 1 hr 1 min
    Cost: Adult return €5,70 / £4.92
    Date of Travel: December 2022
    Operator: Renfe
    Motive power: CAF Urbos TT light rail vehicle. Entered passenger service Oct 2022.
    Thank you to everyone that supports the channel by subscribing, liking, commenting or just watching these videos. I really appreciate it!

    Hi Johnny, I just want to highlight the issue that I really enjoy your RUclips channel. And the, double decker trains in Switzerland are quite impressive. So keep up the good work. And, I also want to say that the Western Rail Corridor between Galway and Claremorris with Irish Rail should be open during 2024, and it will be worth checking it out.

    It is the first to use the Iberian gauge tracks, but the first was in Alicante from the FGV company in metric gauge

      Yes, one or two other comments have said the same, so I have altered the description of the video. And added a question mark to the thumbnail!
      Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I hope you enjoyed the video even though I didn't mention Alicante. 👍

    I don't have a lot of experience of trams, except for London , a littler while ago now,
    so there us something exotic about a trip on a tram now, even to an industrial estate.
    Enjoyed it !

      It wasn't all bad at the industrial estate. I found a little bar that did glasses of Alhambra for €1,50 so I managed to pass the time before the return trip!
      Yes, it made a change. I think there will be more trams and light rail in 2023.

    Though narrow gauge, the first modern tram-train in spanish territory is the line between Alacant and Benidorm. You can check it out.

      @JohnnyHooverTravels  Год назад +2

      Thank you. I have and I've altered the description of the video. The Cádiz service runs onto "mainline" Iberian gauge lines, so it is new in that sense. I'm also not sure, when looking at Google maps, whether the Alacant to Benidorm train ever shares a roadway with other vehicles that are travelling in the same direction. But Wikipedia refers to Alacant-Benidorm as a tram-train so I'd be arguing against the power of the wiki.

      Exactly, that exist for long time already before this one

    They have one in Alicante exactly like that. It has been operating for years ... and goes to other cities as well

    Is the Alicante to Denia line not a tram/train? Or Valencia's Castello-Valencia-Betera? I'm interested to learn the differences. Thank you for sharing this video!

    • @JohnnyHooverTravels
      @JohnnyHooverTravels  Год назад +4

      I don't believe they are, as all the publicity and pieces written in the press refers to this line as being the first. But you've piqued my interest, so I just might go away now and check!
      Either way, thank you so much for watching.

      @@JohnnyHooverTravels I've live in alicante for a few years and there what they use are tram-trains too.
      and for other times,suggest you NEVER trust a press release,at least in spain. they usualy have blatant lies and they don't really care about being 100% truthfull ,if they have something they could use to give more exposure to the proyect they will use it.

    • @JohnnyHooverTravels
      @JohnnyHooverTravels  Год назад +1

      @@jomanaitor I see what you mean in Alicante. There are definitely dedicated tracks where the service is a train (regardless of gauge). My question is the service a tram too? Ie. Is there any point where the rail system shares the roadway with other vehicles where both modes of transport are travelling in the same direction and not in dedicated lanes? That is, not just where two rights of way are crossing.
      But I do accept the definitions seem blurred and no doubt Cádiz marketing would be keen to argue the point their way!
      Whatever, I'm really grateful that you've highlighted the little trains around Alicante/Benidorm because they look to be a very beautiful ride up the coast!

    • @JohnnyHooverTravels
      @JohnnyHooverTravels  Год назад +1

      Actually the argument in Cádiz is that the service runs on the Iberian gauge mainline railway and therefore holds the term "train" because it complies with all mainline signalling standards and also has higher mainline doors. Oh crikey, I need to get moving and stop going down this rabbit hole!
      Happy New Year 😀

      Have to make one final comment- the wikipedia entry on TramTrains actually refers to the Alicante tram as a tram train. Later today, I will alter the description of this video.
      Thank you

    Is a tram-train similar to an Interurban that used to be popular in America (ex: South Shore Line in Chicago)

    • @JohnnyHooverTravels
      @JohnnyHooverTravels  Год назад +1

      It's something somewhat discussed in other comments. I think the definition is "it depends."
      My personal view is that to be a tram, the vehicle must, at some point in the journey share the street with other traffic. And to be a train, the vehicle must travel on dedicated lines reserved only for trains and separated from other forms of traffic.
      So a tram-train has to do both at some point in the journey!
      So it is kinda interurban but with those caveats.
      Thank you so much for watching and commenting 👍
