  • Over fifty (50) cities in Europe have metro systems from very small ones to mega systems that carry millions of people on a daily basis. What is your favorite system and why? (Is it because it carries a lot of people? It is an old system? The stations are really beautiful etc.) Comment below.

    • Which European Capital...
Included are over 50 systems within Europe. Wikipedia was used to provide data such as daily ridership, length, opening year, and interesting facts. Please note that ridership can vary depending on the year and the years used for ridership are not consistent for this video.
Unless noted otherwise, ridership is weekday.
-Data is up to date as of 2018 - there are expansions happening across many systems in Europe, some footage used in the video may be old because it was difficult to find footage for certain systems or I was using my own footage from years ago. Changes are happening to a lot of metro systems and the video does it best to showcase as much up to date information as possible. Metro maps also proved to be a challenge to collect as some systems include heavy rail lines while others don't.
    -
Unless noted: ridership refers to daily weekday ridership

Im from New York City and we have one of the largest subway or metro systems in the world but the European systems look more clean and beautiful compared to ours. The former Soviet Union Metros seem to have the oldest rolling stock or train cars. I guess you can attribute that to budget constraints. But none the less all these systems are quite beautiful.

Many stations are litteraly pieces of art, beautiful cathedrals under streets. It is very clean, safe and well maintained. Trains run every 1,20 minutes. Moscow metro is, with no doubt, the best underground system I've ever taken.

Rome's map is missing C line (completely automatized, w/ San Giovanni station with an exhibit of what was found during the line construction, which is still in progress). And B line is the only one with the few older dirty looking trains shown on the video (a rate of an old train out of five on that line). The main issue is the frequency at rush hour and floodings in case of not so rare monsoon-like rains that occur especially in fall (this last one applies almost exclusively to A line).
So yeah, to sum up, an old line, the newest yet still in progress and the one that occasionally gets flooded. But with some flaws, too

I've been to Istanbul in october and i was suprised what fantastic metro system it has, everything is simplified even if you use it first time, price is really decent (0,4 euros for one ride, and for example next ride within 2hrs is 2x cheaper), actually the best you can imagine in every aspect. For example i've been to Paris in 2017 and i was really suprised in what condition it was, everything was run down and far from even decent level.

In terms of station design, Stockholm without a doubt. I just LOVE the cave-like stations.
In terms of efficiency, I would say Madrid. Nothing fancy-looking, but very good and big network, high frequencies, and very clean, just as it should be. Combine that with the pretty good suburban train network (Cercanias) which serves parts of the city, and you have what is probably one of the best city rail systems in the world.
That being said, I'm tempted to say Vienna has overall the best public transportation among the cities I have visited so far. Sure, the underground network isn't that big compared to, say, Madrid, London or Paris, however it works well, and it is compounded by a very extensive, high-frequency tram system as well as a number of bus lines which serve the city extremely well. Not to mention that it is rather cheap, a monthly pass is only 45 euro.

My opinions from the metros I've travelled with:
My city is Budapest I like our metro here, you can meet old and new in one place. The stations of the old M1 from 1896 and the brand new M4 are awesome. Prague metro system is similar to ours. Well organized and effective together with the surface transportation. I like Prague in general very much. The most beautiful metro stations for me are Stockholm's cave like stations and on Lisbon's red line. I like the antique feeling in some of the lines in Paris and London, the U1 in Berlin, and the old train sets of München. I pretty much disliked the depressed feeling in Rome's metro as you can't see through the window from the huge amount of graffiti and it's overcrowded. In Naples the metro is the only reliable source of transportation because travelling on the surface is the chaos itself in any form. (except maybe the funiculars, too) Public transportation is just useless there. The rest of the cities I've been to have decent metro service, too. I've seen Belgrade's one and only metro station which functions as a stop for commuter trains and is pretty run down. A city of that size would deserve a metro.

    1. In the morning and evening (rush hour) trains run at intervals of not more than 1 minute. Night time is no more than 6 minutes.
    2. The metro operates from 5.30 am to 1.00 am. On holidays until 3.00 am.
    3. There are more beautiful stations in Moscow.
    4. In the Subway in Russia is very clean and not accepted to do graffiti and litter,
    5. There Is free internet in the Moscow Metro.
    6. Fixed cost not divided into zones.
    7. In The new trains you can charge your cell phone during the trip.
    8. One of the safest subways in the world.
    9. Minus only one in rush hour a lot of people.

I know the following systems from personal use in the past:
Barcelona, Berlin, Hamburg, Istanbul, London, Madrid. Milano, Munich, Paris, Stockholm, Toulouse and Vienna.
I rate Madrid the best, because you have clean, large, wide stations, you can pretty much get everywhere and at almost all times. Rolling stock and stations are modern and stations are even air conditioned (take that Barcelona!).
Barcelona is a dirty system, but at least a few lines are somewhat modern. Pickpockets are everywhere though.
Berlin is old and also dirty. I much more used the S-Bahn there.
Hamburg was mostly okay, but some parts smell really bad (piss)
London is pretty good, though these "worm" shaped trains have a low ceiling. I like the Oystercard system as much as the contactless system of Madrid.
Milano I don't remember much, since the last time I was there, a lot will have changed.
Munich seemed pretty good to me. Some trains are a bit dated.
Paris is creepy. Only tourists and pickpockets seem to use it. It's dated and badly maintained. Only line 14 is efficient, the others can't travel fast because the stations are far too close together. This system needs serious rework, along with the RER lines. Horrible altogether.
Stockholm is pretty nice, together with the commuter trains. Though I wish there was a possibility to buy full-day tickets (the ones you can get are only valid for 45 minutes afair.
Toulouse is pretty nice. It's a VAL system that I like.
Vienna is also pretty efficient. Though some stations nowadays look dated. But they are well kept and clean.

Aside from the price, i find that the subway stations in Paris are often the same style but some stations have their own unique style and the Paris subway system is really clean in my opinion.

This is the ligne A of toulouse metro
Powered by some kind of carpet rail as you can see you can already expect that this subway is driveless well infact its true its driveless The Ligne A created In 1993 With the lenght of 12KM seems like a modern subway but no infact they probably started building this subway in the 1970s the Wagons are called "Val 208/206/cityval" Which means Véhicule Automatique Léger and for the traduction its Light Automatic Vehicle and for Cityval its the same but its just adding city to the name these vehicles aren't only in toulouse they are in Lille (Line 2-1 soonly not line 1 because they are gonna change to alstom) Renne (line A and line B) CDGVAL(Paris Charle De gaulle airport)(CDGVAL, CDGVAL Lisa) Orlyval(only val 206)(Orly Airport) Uijeongbu (Only a bit modified val 208)(U-line) Turin(only val 208)(soonly will be removed with the new alstom metropolis metro same for lille line 1) and finnaly Toulouse For Line B only val 208 For line A Val 206 and val 208 and for line C it will not be a Val but a alstom metropolis(Its not the same as lille and turin one) this large beast mesurate 36meters and can be upgraded to 48meters the large doors mesurate 2 meters and large enough to carry around 286 passenger with 36m and 386 passenger with 48m Capable of Doing a 27km ride with only 30 minutes this large beast could be capable of reaching the 110KM/H beating the VALs in a race easily There will be LED pannels,Air conditioners and Security cameras bassicaly being more usefull than the VALs which doesn't have air conditioners (soonly they will add security cameras on the val 208/206) This Alstom is truly a beast By Maybe being more usefull than the lille alstom metropolis And a reminder this is only the prototype the actual model could possibly be more larger, For the prototype disappearance of folding seats and chairs facing each other for more space which isn't in the lille alstom metropolis (Execpt for the folding seats) The lille alstom metropolis is succefull too because it have led pannels, luminosity, and much more this lille beast reaching a lenght of 52Meters will be circulating around the 48km rails of Line 1. and i haven't forget there will be the possibility to walk through the 2/3 Wagons in the Toulouse alstom metropolis. Now for the line C. The line C the most advanced driveless subway project of france the large line reaching about 27km have a 2km aerial bridge between 3 stations which make 25km underground and 2km in the bridge portion this large line being capable of beating both Line A and line B in size will be the Most complicated project of toulouse yet well its not the only project its a PART of the project. Time to introduce The Aerospace Project one of the most biggest project in france. This will include the delete of tram 2(its already got deleted) and include a airport tram shuttle From blagnac(connecting to tram 1) to The Actual LFBO(Toulouse Blagnac Airport) there will be new wagons of tramway which we didn't see yet this line will be finished in 2026 and for the line c it will be finished in 2028.

Since I visited London as a 12 year old boy I have been fascinated by metro systems and metro maps .Since then I ‘ve experienced the systems of Paris, Brussels, Munchen, Budapest, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, New York, Boston and Haifa and collected a lot of subway maps. To say what is the best system is not easy, accessibility, by stairs, escalators, elevators, user friendly stations and tunnels, the trains themselves, noise, violence, graffiti, cleanliness, safety, ticket or card use and availability, price, location of the stations , frequency, operating hours, display maps and apps of the network, it all has it’s influence. Seeing all those interesting videos and comments, I would vote for the Stockholm metro

You should add as information that the metro system in Paris is in development. There is 16 metro lines (14 + 3bis + 7bis) and 3 under construction and 1 in project with further extensions (lines 15, 16, 17 and 18). For me, this is the best one! But I like although the Berlin's network :)

    • @catenaris
      @catenaris 5 лет назад

Yes, finally someone quoting Paris :)
Why? Because of the diversity of trains between lines and even on the same line (RER A, C, E, L, line 14), mostly. Also because of how wide the nework is, but unlike London lets you choose between fast commute (RER), slow (lines 10, 12, 7bis...) and medium speed (13 and 14) , instead of just having stations too far from one another. And its operation times, even in distant suburbs, isn't tyat bad either. Even trains are included as part of the Transilien with the RER lines and some are quite good (lines L and N in particular).
Apart from that, yes it's not clean, yes it's often late, yes the ticket system sucks although it's going to be replaced next year, yes the two companies (RATP and SNCF) hate each other and don't communicate with one another (in Châtelet-les Halles digital timetables of RER line D aren't exposed because it's RATP-controlled and the other company doesn't share the informations), however very few cities have such big networks to handle and they improved in the past couple years x)
However, Berlin is also amazing for it's subway system. I wished Warsaw and Lille had a more extended network...
