RailJet from Innsbruck to Villach - Part 1: Through the Tyrol to Schwarzach St Veit

I'm travelling through Austria from Innsbruck to Villach. And this is Part 1, where the ÖBB RailJet takes us eastbound through the Austrian Tyrol to Schwarzach-St Veit, where I have to change trains for Villach. This ride proved so beautiful that I've have to break the journey into two parts, with the second part following afterwards. Join me! Departure: Innsbruck Hbf, Austria Destination: Schw...
Verona to Innsbruck through the Brenner Pass on the ÖBB New Generation Railjet
Просмотров 4,7 тыс.День назад
Travelling from Verona to Innsbruck over the Brenner pass has been one of the great railway journeys of Europe since the line opened in 1866, and now its my chance to ride it. As an added bonus ÖBB have just launched their "new generation" Railjet sets onto this route, so we get a chance to ride trains that have been in service for less than a month! Are they any good? A mega-journey on the Megabus. But is it any good?

After going Exeter-Leeds on the train with Cross Country, I'm returning Leeds-Exeter with Megabus. I've not been on such a long coach trip before, but at just over twenty quid, it's a lot cheaper than the train. But is it any good? Will I regret it and say "never again!"? Come along as I try out this long distance (or at least long for me) coach ride. Departure: Leeds, England, UK Destination: ...
Leeds to Morecambe with Northern along the Bentham Line

Another Northern trip! This time I'm heading across from Leeds, following the path of thousands of summer holidaymakers in days gone by, who took their buckets and spades to the sweeping bay at Morecambe. Sadly, this is not the weather for sandcastles on the beach, but we still get a look at the rolling countryside and riverside views that makes the Bentham Line a lovely trip at any time of yea...
Interlaken - lakeside walk around the Brienzersee

I've just arrived in Interlaken and checked into my hotel, but it's too nice to stay in. As I have an Interrail ticket, then a little hop on a local train is essentially free, and I noticed there was a really lovely lakeside path by the Brienzersee. So, cue a quick reversal back out to the lakeside and a really lovely little walk on a particularly warm late afternoon in March. Join me as we rid...

It is very early in Venice. That's the perfect time to see the city! Join me for a walk around the empty streets of Venice before I hop on the morning ROCK train to Verona. Don't ask me why the ETR521s are branded "Rock" by Trenitalia. They've also got Jazz, Pop and Swing too. I'm not sure I want my train to rock, or swing for that matter, but that's marketing for you. Nice trip, great scenery, hope you got the connection. Totally agree your comments about UK train information - last week we were out and about between Attenborough and Welshpool and 3 of the 5 5 trains had duff information about the train set up - and one train manager that made us walk up the platform because we were standing by the first class carriage! Waiting for XC Customer Service to respond on this!

Regarding the EC163/164 trains Graz to Zurich, it is magnificent Alpine scenery almost the whole way. But this is one of the few trains in German-speaking Europe where i would advise that a seat reservation is absolutely essential 365-days-a-year and in both classes. I have first hand experience of how busy this train gets!

Those maps of where the trains stop are useful as long as they don't announce a rearrangement of the Wagenreihungen Köln Hbf is famous for that. We have to order a Hublift for my partner's wheel chair and a DB person to operate it. In Köln Hbf it is not unusual to change platform and change ends LOL I call it the Kölner Übung (Cologne exercise regime)! In the UK do they bother? I was in Preston and I asked where first class was likely to be. The guy said it was fifty fifty which end so you were best off waiting in the middle LOL

"declassified 1st class". We wish, but nope. Local and regional trains in Austria don't have 1st class, only Germany does that. The ends of those Talent trains are simply the only sections with seating rows in airplane-style layout that allows for fold-down tables in the back of the chair in front. In theory those sections are sometimes designated as quiet zone. In Kitzbühl there are a few seconds where the famous Hahnenkamm ski slopes are visible, right around the local-trains only train station of the same name, Hahnenkamm. You were lucky to get to use a RailJet btw.., I guess you can thank Deutsche Bahn for the construction works between Rosenheim and Salzburg. Thanks for the video anyway, looking forward to part 2.

I agree. Johnny was very lucky that trackwork in Germany meant that he went the whole way in first class in a Railjet (Mark One). Most of the regular trains between Worgl and Schwarzach are second class only EMUs similar to the one used at the beginning of the video. Still catching up on some of your videos. You hit the nail on the head regarding the cross country trains, the experience my wife and I had while travelling from Sheffield to Birmingham was awful, we had to stand up all the way, they should have at least 8 coaches available, like the hst used to be, it was nearly the same coming back, but we got a seat from Derby. This was only 3 weeks ago, I thought there would be more carriages on. I hope they double the coaches asap, as if you are going to Devon or Cornwall book early and reserve your seat. Now I have had a good lunch, here is the clarification. As you hinted, the (hourly) Railjet trains from Innsbruck towards Salzburg and Vienna do NOT normally go via Schwarzach-St-Veit. The RJX 863, which you caught at 09 14 from Innsbruck, would normally take the direct route through Germany. There must have been track work on the German section of the route. People wanting to make the Innsbruck to Schwarzach trip will normally change at Worgl. The service from Worgl to Schwarzach is roughly hourly. I am going into this detail, as I am sure that many of your viewers will want to follow in your railsteps.

    • @JohnnyHooverTravels

@@JohnnyHooverTravels Don't forget to let me know when you need to jump through the on-line hoops to apply for a €49 Deutschlandticket. I'll be staying local while the Euros and Olympics are on. Too many people travelling.

As previously said "Wow". Such amazing scenery, so glad you split the trip up. Seeing so many ski resorts in their spring colours. Thanks Johnny for a very enjoyable vlog and I look forward to part 2 with a smile on my face 😊.

Wow, wow, wow! Thank you Johnny for yet another excellent video, travelling over lines with which I am very familiar. If you asked me to name my favourite Austrian MAIN lines, the line you have just shown us would be disputing second place with the line you are going to show us on Monday! (First place goes to the Semmering line from Vienna to Graz.) I have one small clarification to your excellent spoken commentary which I will put in a separate comment, after I have had some lunch.)
